I had a question about user registration and how it works, mainly because I am having a problem.
When a user registers, with the email verification setting, I am assuming that there is supposed to be a new record created in the USERS table in the database. What could cause this not to happen?
Actually, in testing further I found that with the setting at Auto, Manual, or email, the record is not added to the table. And, if I am logged in as admin, the Add User button does not do anything.
I can however edit and delete user records...
Hmmm, adding a Category yields the same thing. And loggin in as a non-admin user still displays some of the menu items for admin, but then gives a page can not be found error if you click on one (ie, approve).
This looks like a db issue to me, I will have to try this with access and on a test server...
Any thoughts?

cwilliams38303.8507291667, Its still not there as labeled 'internet guest'. There's a 'guest' and a host of others. Is there a way to identify it as the proper guest account to use with ASPProtect?
Also, looking through support documentation, I see other possibilities it could be (http://www.powerasp.com/content/hintstips/permissions.asp). Is there a way of telling which the problem is and whether we use a dsn connection or not?
The error we are getting is
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0x1340 Thread 0x17a4 DBC 0x162becc Jet'.
/aspprotect/scripts/populate_config_variables_inc.asp, line 11 ,
I'll give it a shot loading it on the laptop and publishing it, if it doesn't work I'll let you know and you can take a look at it tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for all the help tonight...
Good luck pouring that concrete! , That's because when the page rebuilds, it uses the default number of
users per page setting. You'd have to modify that default setting to
have it do things differently. I used to have mine set to 500
users, until I got past 300... then it wasn't fun to show all users on
the page anymore. I now like 10 per page and searching for
specific users as needed.
But that's me. If you hack a COPY of your default.asp file (with the
original backed up as above), you can get the value set to one you
prefer.
If you want me to find the value, post and I'll look for it later on.
If you want to find it yourself, happy hunting! Just be sure to have a
backup in case you do the wrongest thing possible in your haxxoring.
, that wont work the way you did it because groups are not stored like like.
groups are stored "*1*" or "*1*,*9,*"
so if you test for them you must do so using the InStr function of vbscript
example:
If InStr(Session("Groups"),"*1*") Then ' do whatever End If
also.. as for the session variable it should be Session("Groups")
And in Version 6.... (its all ready to go in version 7) that session variable must be saved in the check_user_inc.asp file near where all the others are saved. If it is not there by default "I dont remember if it is or not" you have to add it like so near where all the others are saved
Session("Groups") = CmdCheckUser("Groups")
If you are wondering if it is being saved correctly you can always response.write out the Session("Groups") to see if it holds a value , Sounds to me like you got some bad databases or something. Or your trying to open a database with too old of a version of msaccess.. not sure
Everything is stored in one database. And yes there is more than just the users table.
Also, removing the "temp" password should be a piece of cake.
Email me for a new copy of the download file ? Use the contact from on the cjwsoft site. Please tell me your order details as well so I know who you are.
, You do not run that page by itself. That is not how forms based authentication in .NET works. That is a special page used by the web.config file. It is automatically used when you protect one of your existing .NET pages but is not meant to run on it’s own thus the error.
To answer your other question a user is not sent anywhere. You protect existing ASP.NET pages as shown in the documentation and the examples. If sent to any protected page they are either prompted with a login box or if logged in they see the page as usual. If they log in the form posts to itself and they end up at the same page after supplying proper login credentials. That is how ASP.NET forms based authentication works. I suggest you get a good book on ASP.NET that explains all of that if you are still confused.
Now, if you really want some sort of page to redirect them somewhere after login make a basic asp.net page.. protect it.. and then use a redirect statement. , I need more details... telling me you cant get it to work doesn't give me much to go on ,
I have switched to Alentus and have the permissions set correctly and Parent paths turned on. I cannot figure out how to connect to the database. Should I have the database in the aspprotect/data/database folder, or in the data folder that Alentus has in my root directory? once that is determined, how do I decide what the path to that database is? I have tried many things, but this is what the setup page tells me to enter in the data_conn file DBQ=D:\Websites\www.mysite.com\aspprotect\data\database\ASPP rotect_access2002.mdb;Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};UID=Admin;Password=temp
Thank You , Thank you...I thought I was doing something wrong - and thanks for the tip on the virtual path., sorry.. you just said above you were using XP SP2 so that is the article I referred you to as I just assumed you were talking about your local web server
here is my article on permissions regarding server 2003 http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/windows_2003_server_and_ permissions.asp
I can look at your installation monday if you like. In about an hour I leave for a wedding thingie and I wont be around again untill monday around noon
Try the uploading using VBSCRIPT method just for the heck of it. Perhaps there is an issue with the installation of the dundas component.

, Hello,
1.)
I dont really have any ideas about the japanese characters. I also don't have any ideas about changing settings in the database. Your going to have to do some research on all of that.
Perhaps try pasting the text into a text document 1st.. then copy/paste them into the application. Perhaps that will eliminate any unseen weird characters. I do it sometimes when pasting things from word to my html editors and it works great.
2.)
I dont/cant support custimization to the code but here are some tips to get you started.
edit "items_inc.asp" carefully with a text editor (back it up before you begin so you can revert back)
change this anywhere you see it
?SORTBY=Name
to
?SORTBY=Name+Asc
or
?SORTBY=Name+Desc
Expiriment to see which gives you the desired sorting. Do the same process for the price. The + Sign just passes a "space" back to the page in the proper format if you are wondering.
3.)
The items for page setting is easy. Just go to the settings page when logged in as the admin. Edit this field. "ResultPageSize" cwilliams38157.5340277778, Regarding hosting companies..
Now.. obviously if you are hosting on someone elses server you may not be able to set permissions like this.
Ultimately, if you are hosting somewhere and ASP and Database connectivity is part of your hosting plan. It is the hosting company's responsibility to set these permissions for you when asked or to give you a special interface to do so on your own. If they are not helping you do this then maybe it is time to get a hosting company that is serious about your ASP Hosting Needs.
Also... JUST TO BE PERFECTLY CLEAR
The permissions we are talking about cannot be set via FTP or Frontpage access to your web site. They must be set like shown above or via a special interface meant to set the permissions correctly. For all you people out there messing with the permissions you see in FTP and Frontpage.. you are wasting your time and possibly creating problems in your web.
All ASP scripts that communicate with an Access Database, Upload Pictures, Modify Text files.... are going to need these permissions set in some way or another. We have no control over that fact. cwilliams38360.69125, Hi,
The source code comes with it. They are the.vb files.
I don't give out any project files for reasons stated in the article below.
Please read this in full if you want to edit the application in Visual Studio.NET
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo85-1.htm , If you want to have a login form on a non protected page that posts to a protected ".asp" page use code like this.
Change the action of the form to the page you want them to log into. Make sure to page you send them to is protected by the "check_user_inc.asp" file.
<center> <table border="0" width="400" height="200" bgcolor="#000000"> <tr> <td bgcolor="#F4F4F4"> <form method="POST" action="memberarea.asp"> <input type="hidden" name="Status" value="Checkem"> <p align="center"><font face="Arial">ASPProtect Login</font></p> <div align="center"> <center> <table border="0" bgcolor="#C0C0C0"> <tr> <td bgcolor="#EBEBEB"><strong><small><font face="Arial">Username</font></small></stro ng></td> <td><input type="text" name="Username" size="10"></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#EBEBEB"><strong><small><font face="Arial">Password</font></small></stro ng></td> <td><input type="Password" name="Password" size="10"></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#EBEBEB" colspan="2"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size="-1"><input type="checkbox" name="KEEPMESIGNEDIN" value="True">Keep me signed in on this computer unless I log off.</font></td> </tr> </table> </center> </div> <div align="center"> <center> <p> <input type="submit" value="Login"></p> </center> </div> </form> </td> </tr> </table> </center> , how's it going ?, is that lindsey lohan and her fake boobs as ur avatar?
I am installing IIS and all of its glory on the other computer now... gotta love remote desktop (the pc is at work ) , This user has notified me that the issue has been resolved based on what I told him., as far as sql goes if you follow the instructions with give for setting up a new database you shouldnt have any issues and permissions should be already set. because we handle that in the sql script we give you.. "its a good thing to look at and it is pretty easy to understand what is going on""
however using another account could cause permissions issues.."yes, even sa" basically the username your using needs datareader and datawriter permissions to all tables used by the photo gallery system and you probably have to go specifically set them usin ght e security tab for your database in enterprise manager. This is more of SQL server 101 than anything to do with the Photo Gallery Code so I am not going to get into it too deeply, but that is definetly the issue. Permissions...
cwilliams38303.6065740741, Some users have reported an error during the registration process. Here is what I believe is happening.
When you register you get sent a validation email that has a link in it that looks something like this.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum//activate.asp?ID=testAD3AD2 97BC
That link can only be clicked on once which will activate your account.
If you somehow run that link more than once you will get a message telling you there was an error.
I think some people are double clicking on the link they get sent and running it more than once.... or clicking on it again after registration is complete. It probably happens very fast so they never see the success screen.
Either way, if you can login to the forum nothing is wrong and you are already activated. cwilliams38089.6248842593, AUGUST 12th 2004

, Testing for XML Parser Support
the microsoft xml parser is generally installed by default on all new server setups..
It allows ASP code to make calls to other pages anywhere on the new as well as a lot of other handy things..
download and run this ".asp" page to verfiy that it is installed and be sure it is available for you to use
2004-12-10_132620_test_xmlparser.zip
Make sure you run it from your web server through the web browser cwilliams38331.5621180556, Thanks, I'll take a look.
Nick , Editing using Visual Studio.NET
Here are directions for editing the application using Visual Studio.NET 2002 or 2003 version.. either should work
Some of you are wondering why I didnt just give you the project files. It is best you go through this process and really understand what is going on. Also, I dont use VS 2002 so I wouldnt be able to give you project files that would work with that. Not to mention there is 100% chance my prject files wouldn't work for you anyway because of path differences and other things.
Anyway.. on with the instructions...
1st.. make sure IIS, ASP.NET, .NET Framework, and Visual Studio.NET are all installed correctly and up to date.
Open Visual Studio.NET
File - New Project
Select a New Visual Basic ASP.NET web application.
give the new web to be created a name.. I called mine "aspprotectdotnet"

Hit Ok..
Now. once the project opens up we need to delete a few things in the solution explorer window.
So delete "webform1.aspx" , "deletestyles.css", "Global.asax", "AssemblyInfo.vb", and "web.config"
Basically all the files under the project...
Now... you should have the aspprotect.net files unzipped somewhere on you hard drive...
open that folder and select all the files and folders like so

Now drag those selected files and folders to the solution explorer window of Visual Studio.NET right on to the name of the web. In my case "aspprotectdotnet"
It might say this folder already contains a folder names Bins.. just tell it to copy over and continue on any prompts like that.
You'll notice your project is now populated.
Open up the references tab in the solution explorer window as we need to add some references to the dlls in the bin folder of this project. This is needed so the compile process and function correctly.
Right click on references.. click add reference Then browse....browse on your hard drive to the location of the new web and the bin folder within it.
In my case... "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectnet\bin"
Choose "aspprotectlicense.dll"
Hit open...
Now do the same thing again until you have added all the dlls in that bin folder to the references..
Now.. click add-references again and this time choose "system.management" from the choices in the .NET tab
Once all of that is done your references should look like this

Now in the Visual Studio.NET menu system up top..
Choose Build - Build Solution
If you did everything right you will see something like this in the build window
------ Build started: Project: aspprotectdotnet, Configuration: Debug .NET ------
Preparing resources... Updating references... Performing main compilation... Building satellite assemblies...
---------------------- Done ----------------------
Build: 1 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 skipped
You now have the visual studio side of things all set up.
To make the project actually run we now have to set some permissions and edit the web.config file.
Using windows explorer browse to the web the app is in. Right click on the "_database" folder and give that folder and all the child folders within it. Modify permissions for both the Anonymous webserver account and the ASPNET account. These accounts might not show up until you dig into the advanced tab and click find now to show all the accounts on the machine.
Permissions screen looks like this...

Once that is done go back the solution explorer window in visual studio.
Open the docs folder.. right click on "sysdiag.aspx" and choose view in browser.
It should complie the project again.. and then run that page in either the internal or external browser depending on how you have that set up.
That page will report back path information. "BTW.. for security reasons this page should be removed from any production server after installation is complete.. this is very important" In my case it looks like this.
Probabale AppRootPhysicalPath c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet
Probabale AppRootUrlPath http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet
Probabale Path to Access Database c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb
Now we need to edit the web.config file... your going to need to know some of the path information above.
In solution explorer double click on web.config.
Now edit the AppRootPhysicalPath, AppRootUrlPath, and CN keys accordingly.
In my case they will look like this.
<!-- PATHS USED BY THE SYSTEM --> <add key="AppRootPhysicalPath" value="c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet" /> <add key="AppRootUrlPath" value="http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet" />
<!-- MICROSOFT ACCESS KEY --> <add key="Cn" value="Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};Dbq= c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb;Uid=admin;Pwd=" />
Now.. because our web is really not in the root of our virtual directory which starts at "inetpub/wwwroot" we need to edit another tag in this file.
Find the forms tag near the bottom.
<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />
Change it to say this
<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectdotnet/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />
Notice tha part in bold that we added.
Now, you may also want to check the temp license key info while you are in that file and make sure it is not expired but I am not going to get into that here.
Now save and close that file and do a compile again.
In solution explorer open up the "aspprotectadmin" folder. Right click on default.aspx and click browse
You should see the login prompt in your web browser..
Log in with
admin temp
all lower case
You should see the users screen of the application,
Click on the system info tab up in the top left... make sure all those paths are correct and save it.
Go to the settings page of the admin area. Make sure all those paths/settings are correct and save it.
Congratulations... you just set up a visual studio web project from scratch and our now ready to edit and compile an advanced web application.
From here on your on your own, but feel free to ask questions in the forums as you will probably get help from myself or others who own the software.
One last thing... because we are not in the true root of the web on the development machine the examples in the example folder will need the reference to the "protectpage.ascx" file modified before they will work
It will need to go from
Src="/protectpage.ascx"
to
Src="/aspprotectdotnet/protectpage.ascx"
If this app was installed in the true root of a domain on a real webserver.. you would not have to edit the forms tag in the web config file or change the paths in the examples as they would be correct the way they came , The application automatically generates all the code for you for each method of calling banners. It does this on the zones screen.
If you are using flash it also possible that the actualy flash file is what is causing things to slow up.
It really all depends... it could also be server resource related
using sql server or access.. ? etc etc
all important details cwilliams38362.6615972222, Just as an FYI, I found the problem. FP2003 has an "Optimize" feature that removes so called not needed spaces and comments from the pages. It also completely screws up .ASP code.
I turned off the optimization feature and all the pages I was having problems with worked. However, I would still recommend not using it too! , import/export feature WARNING !!
I just want to warn everyone that the built in import/export feature can be a little dangerous. The reason being is when you import users they get new "Users_ID"s in the database.
The "User_ID" field is an autonumber field and that is why and there is nothing you can do about it.
So, if you are using a user's current "User_ID" to keep track up something important NEVER export the users and re-import them. Because their "User_ID" will change and you will be in trouble.
The PayPal signup features of ASPProtect actually use the "User_ID" like this and that is the main reason this warning is here.
now, that being said
If you are importing new users into ASPProtect
or
simply exporting existing users to another system
then this is nothing to worry about.
Basically, the moral of this story is dont think of the built in Import/Export feature as backup system because it is not. It is not a substistute for backing up your database.
It is a just a tool that can come in handy for various things. cwilliams38425.0597685185, Has this been resolved ?, I'm all set - after thinking about your replies - i checked a bit more and changed the email component type -- thanks again for all your help. , so use the connection string the readme.txt in the sql installation folder file tells you to... it has the correct username.. I just posted that info above
or change the username in the connection string so its rigfht
or go into sql and give any user you want access to the database and use them
Any connection strings that come in the datacon_inc.asp file the way it ships are examples. We fully expect people to edit them.
Also.. the SQL scripts primarly goal is give you a properly set up database with correct files and table settings. Users and permissions often need a little extra attention from the installer as that part doesn't always get set right by the scripts It really all depends on what sql user you are when you execute the scripts. Many times the user someone logs in with doesn't have permission to make users and set permissions.
cwilliams38325.9116898148, when you get back to work.. your "redirect.asp" needs the password include file at the top of it.. or that wont work either..
and of course those pages you send people to all need to be repaired , check the action for the button in the code... its probably not posting back the the right page which should the same page it is...
I bet ya it is posting to guestbook2 which is the wrong directory... an old mistake I forgot to correct... cwilliams38310.6540046296, You would set the groups during users signup the same way you would do the expiration in the following example.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo170-1.htm
The groups field need to be set the exact same way it would look like in the database of course
So, if a user was part of groups 1, and 2
You would look in the database and see this in the groups fields for that user
*1*,*2*
so in the signup code you set that like so
CmdAddUser.Fields("Groups") = "*1*,*2*"
This info only applies to resgitrations and signups using the "users" folder. if you wanted to make different sceanrios you would need to carefully make a copy of the users folder and adjust it accordingly , You not getting a blank page.. you getting an error. You just can't see it because it appears you edited the page background to black.

, yeah.. thats an old graphic probably only seen in a few places.
it is not on the main site http://www.cjwsoft.com/ or here http://www.aspprotect.com/ or here http://www.aspbanner.com/ or here http://www.aspclassifieds.com/ or here http://www.aspphotogallery.com/

thanks. , We want to insert a hyperlink i the mesage area when we e-mail users from the Password Admin area. Is ther an easy way to insert the hyperlink so when the user gets the e-mail, they can just click on it and go the the page we want them to?

When I test fixes, I need to be looking at the right Ad_ID to get correct results , Thanks and glad that fixed it.
You can review this software at http://www.aspin.com/func/review?id=4952510
That being said, ASPIN has a lot of problems with anonymous reviews so if you can please sign up with them and post an Authentic review as they carry a lot more weight. Authentic reviews involve responding to their validation email so when doing so use a real email address that you regularly check.
And sorry I made you use the forums, but as you can see this is exactly the sort of thread that will help someone else later on.. and that is why I require people to use the forums now instead of just email support. That way the conversations are out in the open where they can help everyone instead of buried in my outlook where no one will ever see them. And of course if information is sensitive you can always do a Private Message as you did earlier.
It is all about creating a knowlegebase of valuable information. ,
