Sounds great, Sold!

Thanks Christopher!

, the no concurrent login feature is based on IP addresses.. if you logged in again using the same IP address it would let you in regardless. So for example if you were behind a rhome router and logged in to a site on the internet it would nt matter if you had multiple computers at home because they would all have the same external IP address... etc etc

In other words it is tricky to correctly test..

I really need more detailed info on everything going on. I real world scenarios there are no issues with that feature that I know of. At least according to customers so far. ,

I checked the option pack code as well and it looks correct.
I tested it and it acted as it should.

You can see it in active at the live demo
http://www.aspprotect.com/demo3/demo.asp

admin
test

go the the admin area.. you will notice 3 users with level 4 access
1 of them is inactive

then go to the mass email area and pick   active and level 4
it will say it is sending email to 2 users which is correct

then go to mass email again and pick level 4 and inactive
it will say it is sending email to 1 user which is correct

choose any status and access level 4 and it will send email to 3 users which is correct

When you do this please realize you can not choose a group as well.
That will cause a problem because you can not choose a group and an access level at the same time.

Anyway... perhaps you can private message or use the contact us form and and let me take a look at your system. Since I can't reproduce the behavior that is the only way we might figure this out.

cwilliams38104.690787037,

The only reason no one else asked this many questions is possibly because they didnt NEED the functions i am TRYING to do.

We offer tech support for installation of the base application purchased in it's native form.  In other words were not planning on spending weeks holding your hand and teaching you how to build your application or modify the one you bought. Not because anyone wants to make it hard on you but because there is a practically infinite number of things someone could be trying to do and the only way to give you the exact answer would pretty much involve either writing it for you or having a look at your code to see what the heck your doing. Sorry but my time isn’t cheap nor do I have a lot to spare. I already gave you my approach on what to do and what you should be looking at but obviously you’re not catching on. SO ONCE AGAIN, PLEASE LOOK AT THE SOURCE CODE AND DECIDE HOW YOU WANT TO HANDLE YOUR END OF THINGS BASED ON HOW THE APP DOES ITS THING. I really don’t know how I can be more clear that that. I don’t have a crystal ball that can tell me where you’re going with your own code, what the final requirements are... what field you want to add or remove for the database etc. There is a demo up that everyone can look at and play with so they can get a feel for how the things behave and look. It’s not my fault your naivety led you to believe you could do anything with it in ten seconds. I mean if I just add some wings to my car maybe it will fly, and if you just add a shopping cart and a few products maybe you can start your own Amazon.com with that software right? Sounds good to me…

It would take me longer to re-write YOUR code than it would to have LEARNED ASP.NET and made MY OWN.

Well thats one thing we both agree on, I bet it would take you a long time to rewrite the code when you dont know how to write it in the first place. By you own admission you dont know enough about what your doing to be messing with a .NET app at this point. Maybe you should take your own advice and LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT IT. What’s even worse is that application isnt even complicated, its 101 stuff honestly. One class, thats it! Your not looking at thousands and thousands of them that you will have to read and comprehend. If you can actually “read” the code we kept it lean and mean and to the point. Nothing strange or random, no references to a zillion things all sprinkled here and there. Its reads like a book if you know the language. That’s why developers buy these apps all the time. Not because they couldn’t write one themselves, but because they know their time is valuable as well and for $150 which is less than most get paid an hour they couldn’t be bothered. Furthermore we both spend a lot of time making sure these apps are "dumbed down" so that the average programmer without a lot of object oriented background can pick up the coding style tweak it if they need to. Some people do modify things to suite their needs and others are happy with our apps "as is".

Just to recap we already wasted two days yappin about your jacked up servers and after you went through THREE of them and finally got one working you said the code was working. Red lights started flashing in my office by the time you got to the second screwed up machine, but hey weird things happen so at that point I wasn’t 100% concerned. Technically we could have and possible should have cut you off there as the policy in place is pretty clear about us not being your tech support crew when it comes to getting your machine working properly (especially one we cant even look at). Go check those posts again both Chris and I were answering your questions and being as helpful as anyone could possibly expect.

Several more days have been spent answering questions about how to modify your application and again that’s not our responsibility and we don’t support modified versions of the software for all the reasons that should be obvious. No software company does and if I have to explain why that is well this conversation is beyond hope.

Bottom line is the responsibility to support that application ends the moment you get it running the way it was shipped. Were pretty damn decent about going above and beyond and a lot of the time we go into things we shouldn’t have to. If you have well thought out and specific questions by all means ask, this isn’t some sort of thanks for your money now get lost operation. CJWSoft has been around since the beginning of Microsoft’s entrance into the web application market. We have thousands and thousands of happy customers because we are developers and enjoy working with other developers along the way.

You’re not the first N0oB to show up, but you’re the first one I can think of that ever tried to tell us we didn’t write the apps we sell and essentially wanted to argue that we don’t know what were talking about. Meanwhile you should have been done with your thing days and days and days ago, not in here yapping off and showing your ignorance to the other developers that regularly browse these forums. You trying to tell me how CafePress works is a joke, I happened to have been part of the team that worked on the first few revisions of that site and again you really didn’t even understand what I was getting at in that last post. LINK TO LOGIN PAGE not link to every protected page on the site.

If you think I am pissed off at you, your wrong. I'm just irritated with the whining about this and that and rather than admit your over your head you come back with half baked remarks that only make sense to you. If you think you can google a few terms and come back here talking smack like you’re actually someone that knows what you’re talking about your just making a fool of yourself. You sound like a guy from China trying to tell me how to speak English... My advice is get a few books and start learning or try actually reading up and listening to the other bazillion knowledgeable developers out there that do a great job posting articles about the subject. You might just learn something and actually get your project finished before 2010 and when you do please come back and re-read your posts with "enlightened eyes" so you can see what a goofball you are for saying half of the things you have said. I am not in the mood to keep helping you get your project done step by step. I have huge projects of my own going on and if I thought you could actually provide a descent project specification I might offer to make the changes for you at a serious discount so you could go away and everyone would be happy. Problem is I dont get the feeling you could explain your way out of a paper bag let alone provide a group of programmer the techinal specs for your project.

Your best bet is to post a link to the start of this thread at www.AngryCoder.com I'm sure a  few of  people over there would be more than willing to give you a ton of usefull advice

Google 4GuysFromRolla… a great resource site with example, just dont come back here  telling me those guys/ladies posted things that dont work either.

Chris has written hundreds of articles on PowerASP, a great place to start looking as well… www.powerasp.com I've been spitting out code for longer than I can remeber and I still look thing up on this site because its LOADED with great info. That happens to be one of the very first ASP sites that went up on the net so lets just say he knows a bit or two about the subject.

I'm sure your frusturated but your pushing your luck seriously. 38 posts about this subject in a week and your over there hacking away on your virus infested WaReZ machine which isnt exactally the ideal development rig. I mean we provide the code and your supposed to provide at the least a very basic knowlege of what your doing and a production grade platform to test it out on. To me thats like buying a car and then asking how to drive it... then bugging the dealer to teach you and when you smash the thing complaining because no one told you that your not supposed to drive into a wall. I have the same policy as the dealer, show me something wrong with the car from the factory and we will fix it for you NO QUESTIONS at all with our appoligies, but really once you take it off the lot what you do with it is your deal and its not our responsability in the least.

, Seems as though changing the mail settings to "remote email server" did the trick.
,

ahhh ok.. I was going to wait till morning to answer this one..

glad ya figured it out

,

Hello,

I think you’ll definitely like aspbanner. It's very easy to setup and use and it should work great with your portal.

You’ll have banners rotating in no time. All you have to do is add banner calling code in your pages where you want the banners to show. There are enough methods that you will definitely find a few that work well for you.

BTW, there are actually 7 methods now as we have a new one.
Information about it can be found in our ASPBanner support forums

cwilliams38455.9049884259,

It should be released sometime late May 2004 or early June 2004 but no gurantees as I am pretty busy right now with some projects.

There will be upgrade instructions and it should be a fairly easy upgrade.

,

ok, I just sent you a private message with download information.

replace you existing

"check_user_inc.asp"

"admin/check_admin_inc.asp"

"admin/email_user.asp"

with the new versions in the download

Do some testing to make sure that HANNAH password works ok for you.

Hopefully this cures the issue...
If it works ok for you for a while I will offer the fixes to everyone and start using this code from now on

BTW:
"admin/email_user.asp" had an unrelated bug in it that only happened if its error handling got triggered... it was posting back to the wrong page when that happened and causing an error

,

On the banner rotation order screen it says:

"The Order Of These Banners Will Change Randomly From Time To Time"

Can you tell me the function that does this? I'd like to increase the frequency with which the rotation order changes.

Thanks!

, I posted this in the wrong forum. Sorry.

I have installed ASPProtect on a client's website and I have been notified that some of their customers have been unable to login to the protected pages.

On testing it seems that the issues seem to be related to how cookies are being stored by IE 6.

ASPProtect is being used to protect particular template files within a Content Mangement System. 90% of the time it is working fine but on the odd occassion particular cutomers are unabe to login.

After quite a bit of testing I have managed to find the scenario in which it starts to have problems and was hoping you may be able to provide a solution.

If a customer enters the wrong password, then reenters the correct username and password, they receive a message "template can not be found" from the Content Management System. This message is generated when a url is entered that contains a link to a template file that does not exist. In this case the template does exist. If I remove the ASPProtect code the page opens without error.

Everytime they re-enter the details they receive the same message.

If they close down the browser and then reenter the correct details in some instances the page will open correctly.

More often than not, they have to delete cookies and temporary files and  close the browser. This seems to fix the problem again for most users. For users who's web access is heavily cached by an internal server, even this does not work.

Have you come across this problem before and can you suggest a remedy.

If you can email me privately I can give you the URL and access codes.

Thanks,

Stuart , If you are developing using Windows 2003 Server and running the NTFS file system setting proper permissions on a folder in your website is done like so.

using "my computer" browse to the folder in your web that you need to set permissions on.

Right click on that folder and then choose the "security" tab.

Give the "Internet Guest Account" Modify Permissions
This will check all the boxes under modify as well.

You can also give permissions to the everyone account and accomplish the same thing.

Other things to note:

If you are using ASP.NET you need to give permissions to an account called ASPNET. It wont show up in the user list. You'll need to click "add" and then type in "ASPNET"

In some cases you may want to go into the advanced tab and check both checkboxes shown in order to make sure the permissions you need get set. It really all depends on the situation.

cwilliams38342.7343981481, Ok, I tried what you suggested but the program won't let me leave the date area on the banner ad blank. I reset it to a date in 2010.

I deleted the Level 1 Access note in the notes area.

I then attempted to access the banner stats using the correct info and the right link.  Again,  got this message:

ACCESS DENIED

INVALID Username & Password

Username HAS EXPIRED

Any ideas? Should I just delete the whole account and start fresh?

TIA,

Laura
,

Well. fontpage publishing is evil. That you have found out.

Do not use it. It usually wont work right when running asp code locally and also at the server because of differences with the paths and virtual directory structure. etc etc etc

You can definetly use frontpage to connect to the web site live and drag and drop files into it/edit them... but the sooner you stop using the publishing feature the better off you will be.

,

I have been able to successfully edit some text colors, but there seems to be one page that wont change the text color. Inside the users/ folder, the login.asp page, i cant seem to change the text color from ffffff to 000000 so it can be read on my background color. Every page in the script is correct but this one.

Thanks.

,

Hi Chris

Unfortunately the bl**dy server was down and unavailable for 17 hrs so I couldnt even get to see what the settings were!

It is on, the relevant users appear to have all rights for the data/tempstats folder.

I'm guessing you're going to suggest turning it off and see if the problem still appears.

Colin

, I have no idea.. perhaps PM me info on how to log into your site and reproduce the issue.,

well, assuming that function works and is vbscript not vb
(if it is vb code it may need some conversion work)

anyway

in "users/add_new_account.asp"

you would put the code for that function anywhere in the page.. it does not matter where as long as it is in code tags <% %>

then.. right under this part of the same page

If Zipcode_Postal_Code_Required = True Then
 If  Zipcode_Postal_Code = "" Then
  ErrorMessage = ErrorMessage & Server.URLEncode("You need to enter a Zipcode_Postal_Code.\n\n")
 End IF
End If

add this

If Check_Postcode(Zipcode_Postal_Code) <> True Then
  ErrorMessage = ErrorMessage & Server.URLEncode("You need to enter a Valid Zipcode_Postal_Code.\n\n")
End If

No guarantees but that is the gist of it

cwilliams38381.6456828704,

any asp code that accesses an access database, writes to text files, or allows for picture uploading will need permissions set on certain directories

every application out there is going to need permissions set at some point

its just a fact.. and if your hosting company does not give you a way to manage permissions or have it done when you ask they do not know what they are doing and they are not supporting your asp hosting needs

see my article for more info on the whole process
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo136-1.htm
the part newar the bottom talks about hosting companies

, Your customer should set up a special page that you send banner clicks to. That page is the page that should record the ip and whatever other info needed.

I suppose you could make a page on your end that records that info and finally redirects them to the intended url as well.

All using simple asp. It's really not that dificult to do, but it is a loit easier if you do it this way and keep it seperate from the banner system.

Here is some interesting information not totally related to answering your question.

The banner system does not track IPs on individual clicks because if it did.. 100 clicks on a paricular banner in one day would result in 100 rows in the stats database instead of just 1 row. That may not seem like a lot, but imagine 30 banners all doing the same thing mulipled by 30 days. Your talking 90000 rows in the database instead of 900. It all comes down to what ASPBanner was designed for which is performance and low resource use.

Some banner systems out there even keep track of individual IP's per banner display. Try to imagine how much that effects performance and how much extra space is used in the database for stats. It's crazy and also the reason that the more little features a banner system offers the slower and slower it begins to run.

I am sure I lose sales all the time because I offer less features, but the truth is I know those features will eventually defeat the purpose of why I created this banner system in the 1st place and that i just not something I want to do.

The banner systems with every little feature are just not well suited to very busy sites no matter how well they are designed.cwilliams38324.8386689815, you would have to edit the application in visual studio.net.. change some things around  and recompile the application... in the process figuring out how you want to handle all of that (probably combining the username and email fields just on the registration form then saving both values to the database)

very doable.. just not anything documented or supported as it is custimization

I do have a very  nice article on the forums on how to set up a project in visual studio.net with the application..  it is in the forums,

Version 7 uses.. RC4

The upgrade process is described here in detail including a procedure to convert existing clear text passwords to the encrypted versions. (Your passwords will need to be clear text as the system shipped of course for the conversion to do its thing)

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/info24.htm

It is also covered in the downloadbale docs
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo221-1.htm

Many people have done the upgrade without any issues and Version 7 is getting great feedback.

Should you decide to go with it there is upgrade pricing.

Thanks.

, MSACCESS or SQL server ?,

Hello,

VBScript is the most popular ASP scripting language, and has the most support available. I estimate that less than 5% of the ASP coders out there use anything other than vbscript

That being said it specifically says on the aspprotect site ASPProtect is only for use in protecting asp using "vbscript" as the language.

http://www.aspprotect.com/more_info_full_v7.asp

http://www.aspprotect.com/comparison.asp

it is something I specified very clearly for this very reason.

Sorry, but you can not use ASPProtect to protect pages using Language="Javascript". The code is too complex to be mixed with server side Javascript.

To password protect asp pages written using "Javascript" you really need a an application specifically written in and designed to work with ASP pages written using "Javascript". And then of course that application would not be able to protect ".asp" pages written using "vbscript." (I mean never say never, but it would be a ton of work to get both working and I doubt you will ever see a commercial application that does both)

as for switching back and forth between vbscript and javascript you really can't except with very simple code. Doing so with anything complex can be extremely problematic because the order of execution sometimes gets all mixed up because of the complexity of the code being used.

That doesn't mean it can not work....

You would really want to do something like this.

do not specify a default language at the top

surround the aspprotect include file with this

<SCRIPT Language="vbscript">

</script>

surround your javascript code with this

<SCRIPT Language="JavaScript">

</script>

then make sure none the code including the aspprotect include file has any <% or %> tags in it

that means you have to remove that sort of thing everywhere... that means a lot of work if you used a lot of that sort of thing instead of response.writes to write out html type stuff

and again... I don't know if you would ever get it all working

, You are right.
I have SQL server.
From August to today I have used a very simple login system and now I come back to you for better.
I can insert, edit, delete  users but it happens what I mentioned in my first message.
,

I'm getting errors when clicking the Update Config Button in the System Info page and when clicking the log files button.

I'm not sure if it's a permission thing or not.  ASPNET and IUSR both have modify access to the _database folder and childs, yet I'm still getting the error:

Access to the path "D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectnet\_database\xsd\aspprotectne t_config.xml" is denied.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\_database\xsd\aspprotectnet_config.xml" is denied.

ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.

To grant ASP.NET write access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

Any ideas?

Thanks

,

How do I change the character length for the description field?

,

Protecting ASP Pages

To protect a page without using the Access_Level or Groups feature simply add this code to the top of that page.

Put this under the <%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>

<!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->

This is an example of a File Server Side Include. You could also use a Virtual Server Side Include.

The following URL explains what Server Side Includes are.
http://www.powerasp.com/content/code-snippets/includes.asp

Now when someone runs that page they will prompted to login. They will not be allowed access to that page until they successfully logged in.

An example of doing this is provided in the "default.asp" file included in the root of the Password System.
Look at the source code with a text editor to see the working code. It is quite simple.

Protecting ASP Pages Using Access Levels

To protect a page using the Access Level feature simply add this code to the top of that page.
You simply specify the Access Level before the include file is called. In this example we are protecting the page with Access Level 4.

Put this under the <%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>

<% CHECKFOR = "4" %>
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->

This is an example of a File Server Side Include. You could also use a Virtual Server Side Include.

The following URL explains what Server Side Includes are.
http://www.powerasp.com/content/code-snippets/includes.asp

Now when someone runs that page they will prompted to login. They will not be allowed access to that page until they successfully logged in as a Level 4 user.

Examples of managing Access Levels are provided in the "multiple_access_levels" folder included in the root of the Password System.
Look at the source code of the ASP pages in that folder with a text editor to see the working code. Again, It is quite simple to follow.

Protecting ASP Pages Using Groups

Please see the code generators in the admin are for the code to do that.

cwilliams38403.6864351852, well, I just tried a password using "abcdefghi" and like you said it did not work

I am looking into that.

Also, it seems I had the SQL scripts creating the "Old Password" field just in case someone needed it and I forgot about that. ,

You can't unless you plan on editiing and custimizing the code.

The application is only designed to have one kind of admin and that kind has full access to the admin area.

You can of course give any user access to stats for their banners via the bannerstats page.

That is how it works. There are no other levels of admin access.

,

I set the max image width to 1000; previously it was null. Now I'm getting server errors:

page not found, then, service unavailable (the page is there). But in a new album, the images imported fine and it seems to be working now, despite the IIS issues.

I think my host restricted the amount of memory and resources my site is allowed to use.

,

Hi-

Thanks for the quick response to my previous posts.

This is my issue:

I have read over all the docs and installation instructions and can't find a way to do this:

my default page in my root dir will be a log in page which will take the user once his level is validated to a "home page". Is there a page in your examples that will perform the function of this log in page? or should I rename check_user_inc.asp as the default and change it's html output to make it look like my log in page?

I also looked within the code for check_user_inc.asp and did not see where to specify where the user will go once he signs in.

Your help is appreciated

,

We have been using ASP Protect for a while now and are big fans of the program.  We received ASP Banner 8.2 with our puchase which we now have a need for.  I went to put the files on our webpage, and doing nothing else other than locating the directory there, I noticed differences with how ASP Protect operates.  We have customized it a bit and want to keep the 2 programs separate.  the login screen for one showed up on the other, and some ASP Protect pages appeared altered so i immediately deleted ASP Banner.  did I do something wrong, and how can i ensure the 2 programs work completely independant of each other?  We can't risk braking what we're now using but would really like to add banner functionality to some of our pages.  maybe an update to the program before we install?  puchase new software?  Thanks for your help-

,

Noted:
I actually did not think you did.

As far as debugging goes.. thats all built into visual studio.net.
There is a tag you edit in the web.config file to enable project debugging
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo251-1.htm

Like I said though for changes to ASPProtect.NET I'd start off from scratch and stick with vb.net... using the visual.studio.net interface is not really vary hard to remove and change things you dont' need even if you are a C# coder. Especially simple stuff like you mentioned.

,

Now, we can connect to the MySQL database with ASPBanner using the following connection string if we like.

"driver={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver};server=localhost;port=3306;uid=root;pwd=temp;databas e=aspbanner;option=16386"

But we really do not want to connect to the aspbanner MySQL database using the "root" account

So, lets make an account to use..

In MySQL Administrator select "User Administration"

Down below you will see the user "root"

Right click on "root" and select "Add new user"

Type in a New MySQL Username and Password

I am going to call my new user "aspbanneruser"

Hit the Schema Privileges" tab

In this case since I am using the root account to manage my MySQL system I am just going to give this new user account what it needs to use the aspbanner database.. you may want to apply more permissions to the new account, that is up to you.. I am giving the new user (select, insert, update, delete, execute) So I right click on the aspbanner and then bring over the permissions I need for it.. and hit apply changes down in the bottom right.

We can now connect to the aspbanner MySQL database using this new account like so.

"driver={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver};server=localhost;port=3306;uid=aspbanneruser;pwd=tem p;databas e=aspbanner;option=16386"

article still in the process of being written (3/14/06)

,

Hello- I am trying to install the ASPPROTECT product and tried to read all the docs but still am getting the following error:

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0x1980 Thread 0x1458 DBC 0x223c374 Jet'.

I understand about the physical path for the DSN-less connection and followed the example given. I got in touch with tech support for the host of my site and the give me the following as a physical path:

c:\sites\Single20\laptv1\database

Some observations:

1.- The database directory is outside the root dir but I think I am accounting for it with the path

2.- The permissions are ok

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi

I've tried almost anything here... I'm using an online SQL SERVER database with ASPProtect 7, and I can't login after my initial creation of the admin account.

It works fine with Access... I believe I have checked all the fields created by the sql statement (which was run with no errors),

What could be the problem here? could it be a problem that I run my local IIS against the online sql server?

sincerely,

Morten

,

You might just learn something and actually get your project finished before 2010

your over there hacking away on your virus infested WaReZ machine

LOL thanks for the good laugh-- i guess its time to do some reading and making my own mods to the program..

btw i never insulted cafrepress.. not sure where you got that from- just advised that what they have is exactly what i want to have done. How much for your service?

,

I assume you mean 500 pixels wide

no.. because you cant reliably tell a pictures image width without an image resizing component to look it up.. asp can not do things like that on its own

serverobjects has a free component called "imagesize" that can do it as well but you need access to the server to install the component
http://www.serverobjects.com/products.htm

so if you cant do that with regular asp code you definetly can not stop the upload proces because the picture is too wide..

heck, that would be nearly imposible to do regardless.. even with the best 3rd party components at your disposal

even with an image resizing component you would have to allow the upload.. then check the pixel width.. then delete it.. tell the user what is going on...etc etc  .. all a very complicated process
