- I am using the original files that came with the software. - The software ads items to the database flawlessly. - ASPImage works great.
- When I try to remove an ad or an image it says it's been removed. - The ad does not show up on the site anymore. - BUT, when looking at the sql database the ad is still listed there.
Why is the software not deleting the columns from the database and the images from folder?
Note: My other tables for other projects, in the database, allow me to delete them. , ok, here is what is going on
you are password protecting an ".asp" page that requires querystring info to run correctly (example - "somepage.asp?ID=3"")
that is something I never intended anyone to do.. while it does handle and repass the querystring info along during successful login it does not re-pass that info during a failed login as you have found out
this is all by design.. the only reason the system re-passes the querystring info at all is because I wanted to make it smart for the sake of the remember me/cookie feature.. so if someone was using that and bookmarked a page deep in your site with querstring info...then when they went back to that bookmark they would get authenticated and still see the page as intended with the querystring info in tact
it was a nice feature never intended to handle any situations other than what I just described...
now... notice the url in the browser after failing a login.. then logging in successfully.. it is missing the querystring info
that more than anything is what is going on.. browser caching can cause some confusion when dealing with this because the browser likes to return you to the page minus the querstring info... when that happens a simple browser refresh at that time may very well solve the problem and then you see the page you are supposed to see...
To avoid all of this...
One solution to this is to always start people logging in to an ".asp" page that has no querystring info. That way this won't happen. Once they are logged in you can then offer them links to the pages they need to go to. (you of course still want to password protect those pages)
Another solution is to log them into a page with no querystring info and then do a response.redirect to the page with quersytring info.. thus accomplishing the same thing but without the possibility of the issue because of a failed login.
Another solutions is to do checks in your asp page for missing querstring info.. and if it isn't there do something about it like send them somewhere else.. or display a message about there being an error... etc etc
So,basically you don't want to tell people to login into such and such page with querstring info... and providing a username and password..... You can do it but like you found out it can cause an error if they mess up logging in the 1st time. The system just was not designed to handle that. There are complex reasons for that involving security that would just take me too long to explain.
I hope this makes some sense to you.. it is very hard to try and explain ,
I do not what is going on at this time. It is not a known issue. If is is not working it would seem to be a problem with the application variables on the server possibly and your web.
Perhaps try installing it on a local machine and see if it works for testing sake.
Also.. if your stuck with the black skin you could always just edit the information in the that skins folder to get the app looking the way you want.
That and the header and footer files that comes with the app are what control the look of the system. cwilliams38294.5880208333, If you can would you do it for a price as a mod or will this be added to the new version. , like I said... you would have to modify the code (and really I dont think it is possible, how could it be when images uploaded are of all shapes and sizes)
How are pictures of various shapes and size going to resized to a fixed width and height without distortion on either a horizontal or vertical level ? Uness the image uploaded matches the fixed thumbnail ratio you have set there is going to be distortion.
There is no component that is going to make it any easier. You are already using an image resizing component.
I give you two options the way the code ships.
fixed width and height for thumbnails
or
fixed width / dynamic height for thumbnails
The only other possible option would be
fixed height / dynamic width for thumbnails
and that you would have to code on your own because that option is not there
The last thing I will say is this. Sorry, but I do not support custimizations to the code. It's just not easy to explain. Its a lot of code work. Its a lot of time. , This is a great article from my old powerasp.com site. Connections And Server Database Permissions
cwilliams38084.7458217593, Sounds to me like you got some bad databases or something. Or your trying to open a database with too old of a version of msaccess.. not sure
Everything is stored in one database. And yes there is more than just the users table.
Also, removing the "temp" password should be a piece of cake.
Email me for a new copy of the download file ? Use the contact from on the cjwsoft site. Please tell me your order details as well so I know who you are.
, If you makes you feel any better the photo gallery app runs awesome off an access database. Mostly because all of the picture work is done in the filesystem, not the database. The load on the database is relatively low even with a lot of users., upgrade pricing is here http://www.aspbanner.com/purchase_unlimited_v8.1_classic_upg rade.asp
what is different http://www.aspbanner.com/v8_notes.asp
the changes to make it work with MySQL were vast to say the least more on that from an old thread http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=37&PN= 1&TPN=1
just please remember use of MySQL is just not supported http://www.aspbanner.com/mysql.htm
I can assure you it works well as I have people using it
, I assume you mean 500 pixels wide
no.. because you cant reliably tell a pictures image width without an image resizing component to look it up.. asp can not do things like that on its own
serverobjects has a free component called "imagesize" that can do it as well but you need access to the server to install the component http://www.serverobjects.com/products.htm
so if you cant do that with regular asp code you definetly can not stop the upload proces because the picture is too wide..
heck, that would be nearly imposible to do regardless.. even with the best 3rd party components at your disposal
even with an image resizing component you would have to allow the upload.. then check the pixel width.. then delete it.. tell the user what is going on...etc etc .. all a very complicated process
, Your assumption was incorrect.... the login count has nothing to do with that. The login count only has one purpose and that is to limit the amount of times a user can log in if you want to do that.
Logging in for the 1st time means the time at which they 1st login and their session at the site is created... If there session ends and they come back and login they will get redirected because it will be the 1st time again.
Forms Based Authentication is all about sessions and session variables.
If you only want them redirected somewhere based on the login count that is something you have to work out and check on your own. It's very doable.
Seems like now I should have explained that better but I never thought anyone would think it meant what you thought., sorry.. you just said above you were using XP SP2 so that is the article I referred you to as I just assumed you were talking about your local web server
here is my article on permissions regarding server 2003 http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/windows_2003_server_and_ permissions.asp
I can look at your installation monday if you like. In about an hour I leave for a wedding thingie and I wont be around again untill monday around noon
Try the uploading using VBSCRIPT method just for the heck of it. Perhaps there is an issue with the installation of the dundas component.

, I am running into problems with the import function. I have 25 photos loaded into the import folder. The page see all of the photos. But after I click on the import process it takes me Picture Manager with no pictures loaded. I have hit the refresh button, but there is nothing there. dr_bones38394.676412037, Thanks for the information. We added the name manually instead of using the App_Name variable., Hello,
VBScript is the most popular ASP scripting language, and has the most support available. I estimate that less than 5% of the ASP coders out there use anything other than vbscript
That being said it specifically says on the aspprotect site ASPProtect is only for use in protecting asp using "vbscript" as the language.
http://www.aspprotect.com/more_info_full_v7.asp
http://www.aspprotect.com/comparison.asp
it is something I specified very clearly for this very reason.
Sorry, but you can not use ASPProtect to protect pages using Language="Javascript". The code is too complex to be mixed with server side Javascript.
To password protect asp pages written using "Javascript" you really need a an application specifically written in and designed to work with ASP pages written using "Javascript". And then of course that application would not be able to protect ".asp" pages written using "vbscript." (I mean never say never, but it would be a ton of work to get both working and I doubt you will ever see a commercial application that does both)
as for switching back and forth between vbscript and javascript you really can't except with very simple code. Doing so with anything complex can be extremely problematic because the order of execution sometimes gets all mixed up because of the complexity of the code being used.
That doesn't mean it can not work....
You would really want to do something like this.
do not specify a default language at the top
surround the aspprotect include file with this
<SCRIPT Language="vbscript">
</script>
surround your javascript code with this
<SCRIPT Language="JavaScript">
</script>
then make sure none the code including the aspprotect include file has any <% or %> tags in it
that means you have to remove that sort of thing everywhere... that means a lot of work if you used a lot of that sort of thing instead of response.writes to write out html type stuff
and again... I don't know if you would ever get it all working , Your customer should set up a special page that you send banner clicks to. That page is the page that should record the ip and whatever other info needed.
I suppose you could make a page on your end that records that info and finally redirects them to the intended url as well.
All using simple asp. It's really not that dificult to do, but it is a loit easier if you do it this way and keep it seperate from the banner system.
Here is some interesting information not totally related to answering your question.
The banner system does not track IPs on individual clicks because if it did.. 100 clicks on a paricular banner in one day would result in 100 rows in the stats database instead of just 1 row. That may not seem like a lot, but imagine 30 banners all doing the same thing mulipled by 30 days. Your talking 90000 rows in the database instead of 900. It all comes down to what ASPBanner was designed for which is performance and low resource use.
Some banner systems out there even keep track of individual IP's per banner display. Try to imagine how much that effects performance and how much extra space is used in the database for stats. It's crazy and also the reason that the more little features a banner system offers the slower and slower it begins to run.
I am sure I lose sales all the time because I offer less features, but the truth is I know those features will eventually defeat the purpose of why I created this banner system in the 1st place and that i just not something I want to do.
The banner systems with every little feature are just not well suited to very busy sites no matter how well they are designed.cwilliams38324.8386689815, that variable comes from the settings acreen in the admin area. If you do not have it set properly things like what you are describing will happen., Hi,
I basically explained how I thought that might work here where I went over everything I could think of and suggested you download the free version and see if you could get it working http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo488-1.htm
The part about using the alternate scenario involving querystring info from a url.
I have never done anything like that and that is why I told you what I knew and suggested you try it with the free version... , Sounds great, Sold!
Thanks Christopher! , Can you please elaborate on this? I have a flash banner that is on my site. All of the info is in the code banner section. In the banner link section, I have nothing. Do I need to actually edit the swf file with redirect URL? How do I edit the swf file? Once that is edited, do I put the URL of the site in the Link URL space? Thanks. , humm, I dont know.
If you want me too I would be glad to go into your web site and troubleshoot. If so PM me the info I need and I will take a look and see if I can figure it out.
CJW
, ok, well as far as what else to try I already told you..
you need to manually compare all those field settings with the sql script and make sure they all got set correctly...
you also need to tell me what email/name you ordered the application under... before I will continue this support with you.. at this point I don't know if you purchased the application or if you are using the unsupported lite version
, When using the paypal subscription feature with ASPProtect for a new user the expiration in ASPProtect is actually not used. It is set to Null. This is because the PayPal system takes care of everything on their end.
So I can't see this happening because that field is not supposed to be used and the default PayPal subscription code we provide with the system does not populate that field.
Unless you populated the expiration date field on your own ?
Now that I re-read your post. The ASPProtect 6 reference was confusing me.
Now, if you have users that were never on a PayPal subscription that then sign up via PayPal subscriptiion that may indeed be a different story. Is that what you are saying? I am looking at the code right now and it seems to me like it sets the expration date field to null on any new subscription activity regardless.
Let's forget about ASPProtect 6 as I don't think that matters. Please explain exactly when this happens and does not happen and exactly what sort of user we are talking and what their expiration dates are set at before they sign up for a paypal subscription.
Please be as detailed as possible so I really know what is going on ?, People who have the option pack have a new feature called groups.
Groups are meant as a replacement for using the access levels as they are much more powerful. Support for pages protected using access levels is left in tact for backward compatiability for a customers older protection code.
A customer recently told me groups could not be used like access levels and that 8 access levels was not enough. This is how I explained that groups can do everything access levels can do.
Groups can honestly do everything access levels can do if you really think about it. Using groups and protecting pages accordingly you could actually create a system that basically worked identically to the way the access levels works.
For example..
You make 8 groups and assign users to them accordingly
Protection code on page allows access to groups 1-8 The aspprotect system generates this code for you…
<% GROUPACCESS = "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8" %> <!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
In this case a user assigned to any one of those groups would have access..
Protection code on page allows access to groups 2-8 The aspprotect system generates this code for you…
<% GROUPACCESS = "2,3,4,5,6,7,8" %> <!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
In this case a user assigned to any group between 2-8 would have access..
Protection code on page allows access to groups 3-8 The aspprotect system generates this code for you…
<% GROUPACCESS = "3,4,5,6,7,8" %> <!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
In this case a user assigned to any group between 3-8 would have access.. cwilliams38114.800775463, I get the following message when trying to look up the sysdiag.aspx and the default.aspx files. Why? I have followed all the install instructions.
Server Error in '/' Application.
Runtime Error Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.
Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="Off"/> </system.web> </configuration> | Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/> </system.web> </configuration> | cwilliams38454.4276388889, ok, then I need more information.
Was the code changed ? Thats the big one. If it worked and now it doesn't something must have changed. Things just don't stop working on their own. I would try putting the original files back in there for everything but the config and dataconn files just to make sure and see and if it works with the original files. (back up your old ones 1st so you can copy them back of course)
Also, perhaps PM me the site info so I can go look as well. , i've got a client who has handed me a 151 character banner URL, and i see that the database is designed to take 150 characters. i took the obvious step of just increasing the size of that text field in the database, but i still get this error when i try to enter the URL in the proper form field:
Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.
/banners/aspbanner/save_banner.asp, line 200
now, line 200 is just this:
If Banner_Link_URL = "" THEN CmdEditBanner.Fields("Banner_Link_URL") = NULL Else CmdEditBanner.Fields("Banner_Link_URL") = Banner_Link_URL End If
which tells me that something is blocking the assignment of that long value to that field, even though i believed i had extended the length of that field in the source database.
where else might i look?
, humm, I dont know then..
If you want PM me your site info and I will go in and troubleshoot.
Frontpage or frontpage access, either way
and also the site URL , Protecting ASP Pages
To protect a page without using the Access_Level or Groups feature simply add this code to the top of that page.
Put this under the <%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
This is an example of a File Server Side Include. You could also use a Virtual Server Side Include.
The following URL explains what Server Side Includes are. http://www.powerasp.com/content/code-snippets/includes.asp
Now when someone runs that page they will prompted to login. They will not be allowed access to that page until they successfully logged in.
An example of doing this is provided in the "default.asp" file included in the root of the Password System. Look at the source code with a text editor to see the working code. It is quite simple.
Protecting ASP Pages Using Access Levels
To protect a page using the Access Level feature simply add this code to the top of that page. You simply specify the Access Level before the include file is called. In this example we are protecting the page with Access Level 4.
Put this under the <%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>
<% CHECKFOR = "4" %> <!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
This is an example of a File Server Side Include. You could also use a Virtual Server Side Include.
The following URL explains what Server Side Includes are. http://www.powerasp.com/content/code-snippets/includes.asp
Now when someone runs that page they will prompted to login. They will not be allowed access to that page until they successfully logged in as a Level 4 user.
Examples of managing Access Levels are provided in the "multiple_access_levels" folder included in the root of the Password System. Look at the source code of the ASP pages in that folder with a text editor to see the working code. Again, It is quite simple to follow.
Protecting ASP Pages Using Groups
Please see the code generators in the admin are for the code to do that. cwilliams38403.6864351852, Sorry, there is not any documentation on that.. it is basic asp/database work and customization like that is not supported. I recommended looking at what is already there and using that as a guide to produce more fields. etc etc , well, for now you have to watch the logs. What your talking about would take up a lot of server resources and database space to keep track of. Maybe some day, but no plans at the moment., Thank you.... yes it does
Is there a limit in the number of Zones you can have in the database.
thanking you , Flash files cannot track clicks unless you edit the original flash file to link to the aspbanner system redirect URL.. feeding it the correct ID of the banner.
When that link is clicked on it will then track the click and redirect the user to the “link url” specified for that banner.
The system actually generates the necessary ASPBanner URL for you. That link is shown on the banner edit screen.(you must save the banner at least once and come back to that screen to see the link though)
Really the best way to show it is with an example as seen below.

Basically the flash banner file "powerasp.swf" highlighted in green needs to be edited to link to the banner redirect url which is highlighted in red.... the banner redirect url will then track the click and ultimately send the user to the Link_URL highligthed in blue.
All banners systems work this way when it comes to flash files. It’s the nature of flash and the web browser,
The flash source code must be edited to link to the redirect url in the ASPBanner system. There is no possible way any banner system can track a flash click unless the flash file links to the banner system 1st.... because that click is handled by Flash and the web browser.
In some cases if you do have the original source file for the flash banner then you are out of luck as far as tracking clicks goes.
On a side note... if you create flash banners the way this article says you can actually feed a .swf flash file a link for it to click to. Instead of it being hardcoded.
http://www.macromedia.com/resources/richmedia/tracking/desig ners_guide/index.html
This is really the way everyone should design their flash banners from now on because the url it links to can be easily changed at any time without editing the flash file source code. cwilliams38325.740162037, did anyone find a way to get the descriptions to show under the image yet?
, Hello,
It is very possible, however there may be some issues such as the session variables specific to a particular user would not be able to be created because there would not be a specific user.
I can't tell you exactly how to do it as it would probably take a few hours of messing around with the code to sort it out. Bascially, it's not something I could tell you how to do real quick and I do not support custimizations to the code.
But, it is very possible. You want to check the server variable for the IP address. The tricky part would be where and how this all just integrated into the "check_user_inc.asp" file , Gotcha.
Can you set an expiration date on a subscription?
Thanks,
Jess , I wasnt talking about the date for a banner ad.. I was talking about the date field in the database for a USER if there is one (I dont remember if that app had date fields for user or not and I am not at a computer to take a look)
If you do not know how to directly open up and edit the database then yes you should just make a new user, Its one of the drwbacks of the encyrption.. sometimes.. VERY RARELY it will produce things that cause a problem and will not work.
It is something I am doing more research on .., Some of our users complained that their users id and passwords are sent in the clear. So we decided to invest in an SSL certificate from Verisign. It has been tested fine with all forms and pages in ASPProtect version 6. The only remaining page which I am not sure how to protect is the home page. Let's say my home page is http://www.MyDomain.com/index.asp. When the user goes to this link he/she will be presented with the check_user_inc.asp page so he/she can enter their ID and PW. So how to make the login information send from this page thru HTTPS? , Need to clarify something..
Your talking about the page where a new user registers right ? Your not talking about adding a new user from the admin area ?
Either way under no circumstances do I see anything like you are saying happening nor has any other ASPProtect user ever mentioned this probem.
I am going to need to see your site and see this happening. It just makes no sense the way you are describing it.
Also. did you edit the registration page code in any way. If so please revert back to an original copy to ensure this is not some sort of problem introduced by editing the code. cwilliams38164.8115046296,
