Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 1:47:01 PM

I finally spoke with someone who knew what I was asking for and they set the rights and all is fine.

Thanks for your help. Wish all business' had customer support like here

,

I just installed the software, but I can't find any place where I can see when users logged in, can someone please tell me where I can do this?

Thanks

,

Hello,

I do not really understand what you mean?
There are no country and city lists in ASPClassifieds.

cwilliams38391.0301388889,

I am successfully using ASP protect on our site. I have one question:

The file Check_user_inc.asp looks a bit bland as I can't seem to use the sites Dreamweaver template. If I apply a template to this page, it is duplicated on other pages with this template.

How can I apply a template to this page?

Thanks

Clark

,

ok...

you got problems if you cant import a file created by the system..

You using SQL or MSACCESS and do any of the users data have apostraphes in it ?

, just FYI -- i added in a new data table into the database.  I havent finished implementing the whole thing across the entire site, but it wasn't too difficult.  Once I have all of the functionality complete I'll post some details.  Some of the changes are the addition of a new album nav style which combines style 2 and some of the features of the new data table.

Very easy app to work with guys.
,

If logfiles do not get created it is most likely one of 3 things

  1. invalid physical path specified
  2. permisssions
  3. filesystem object is disabled on the server

that path doesn't look correct to me for a live professionally set up server but only you or your server admins can know that for sure

you will not get any errors when things arent perfect.. just no physical logs

RecentActiveUsers and RecentPageRequrests are not related to the stored logfile feature.. Recent Activity is a different thing

,

There are several pages on my website that a user may go to that are not protected (e.g. home page).  If the user has indicated that they want to be saved on this computer (until they explicitly log off), and their 1st entry point is to an unprotected page, how do I determine whether they have logged in before, and extract the info from the cookie / session variables without forcing them to log in or making the entry page protected?

, still.. its got to be somthing along those lines.. I have seen times when even dbo didnt have full rights to a particular database so permissions should always be manually checked..

The import data routine is most likely the source of the trouble

For troubleshooting sake I would create a fresh installation from scratch using the sql script we provide and a new SQL user. Then see if that works. If it does then try to import your data into that.

There are no other things I can think of doing. Sometimes you just have to start with a clean slate. ,

Ohhh...

I was thinking it worked like this; A user goes to that page and logs in.. and from there they can then browse the site and do what they want..

So in order for it to work i need to edit a page say... members.aspx (i assume it needs to be an asp.net page) and in the header put that protect code and when a user accesses it, it will prompt them for their un and pw and then if correct will allow them to view the page... and likewise if they are still logged in will be able to use the page?

If that is how to works as i mentioned above thats great...

I understand the redirect principle...but say i have a log in box on the main page... you know like most pages have a user log in on the left hand side... i wanted to do that. But i cant obviously protect the main home page or else normal users will not be able to view it without logging in or registering

,

Chris:

The string is being saved and I get a .wav ring sound to confirm.  I have tried editing in "notepad" and then running the "data/show_path_info.asp" file after with the same results.

Ken

,

how about translating the error to english..

Looks to me off hand that it would have something to do with the SQL server itself not being run in an english lcid/format and causing some sort of date issue.

I would also suggest you start off with a brand new blank SQL ASPBanner database and make sure that works before you attemp t to import any data into it.

,
Using just ASP (Form Based Authentication) you can only protect the actual content of the ".asp" files.

You can however use some ASP tricks to stream other types of files to the users.
That way the actual file locations are never known and they can only get them/see these files when they are logged in as you would be streaming files to them after they logged in.

Below are informative links I have collected on the subject in an email I sent to another customer a while back.

Using Active Server Pages you can only protect ".asp" pages.
You can however password protect ".asp" pages that stream files to the user using code like in these examples therefore keeping the actual file name a secret.

And from another email I sent...

ASPProtect only protects the content of ".asp" pages. Directory protection is not possible using just ASP.
Other file extensions can not be protected using just ASP.

There are ways to get around this.

You'd want to do a technique like this to stream non ".asp" files to the users.

The safileup component from softartisans can actually do something similar as far as streaming the files go.

Then use something like ASPProtect to protect the ASP files that streams the files.

The actual location of the files is never known to the users and of they don't have access to the asp pages they can not see or get those other types of files.

Very doable, but nothing ASPProtect takes care of automatically.
This info above should get ya on track.

cwilliams38344.8751736111, You are NEVER supposed to move any files, especially that one. Of course that is going to break a lot of things.

Please put it back the way it was.

You change the path of the include file when you call it, never the location of the include file.,

i downloaded the latest version. i also downloaded the sql script provided and ran in sql query analyser to create the tables.

After that i ran a special page to intially get into the system,

then setup a new user, then make them an admin,

and after that i logged out and again when i try to login iam not able to login.  When i check the ASpp_User table I noticed that the values in the fields "Login_limit" and "Active" in the ASPP_Users table in the SQL changed to NULL and 0. But if the value are Nulls or 0 it means it's not active and it's not allowing me to login.

Pls advice

, I will give you permission to move it since you asked.,

Thanks.

Is there a limit to how many access levels the program has?  We were thinking of having a different access level for each client that logs on our site so we can customize their web experience.  We see 6 in one place of the program, 8 in another, but is there any reason why we couldn't make 100 more?

Thanks again for the help!

, You shouldn't be renaming or moving anything... unless you really really understand what you are doing and are at an expert level expert as far as ASP coding goes.

like I said earlier..
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=354&ge t=last#1130

redirecting with version 6 is not supported but this thread tells you exactly how to set it up (I showed you this thread in an that earlier post)

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=17&KW= redirect

This thread below may also help in case the page you want to start on with a login form should not be password protected..

Yippee!

,

Well, I assumed I'd be able to tweak this thing but it is all so intertwined it doesn't pay to mess with any of the files. Hence, I'm going to have buy a different system only a week or two after buying the unlimited version here.

As I leave I want to give you some impressions here. While the system is low-cost, the 99 dollar version is missing a few pieces that I think would bring the value to 99. It is one thing to talk about the speed/performance, but to a degree that's hard to measure, and to anyone with web advertising on their site, performance will always run second to potential site income.

It definitely needs a user interface and registration for advertisers, and it definitely needs a single variables file for changing the hundreds of variables for which there is no control. I had to search on my own just to change the look and feel.

Lack of multi-zone support is a serious drawback. I would submit that anyone with a serious website needs it, and will gladly pay you 139 over 99 for just that one feature.

Take them or leave them, they are just suggestions.

Editing using Visual Studio.NET

Here are directions for editing the application using Visual Studio.NET
2002 or 2003 version.. either should work

Some of you are wondering why I didnt just give you the project files.
It is best you go through this process and really understand what is going on.
Also, I dont use VS 2002 so I wouldnt be able to give you project files that would work with that. Not to mention there is 100% chance my prject files wouldn't work for you anyway because of path differences and other things.

Anyway.. on with the instructions...

1st.. make sure IIS, ASP.NET, .NET Framework, and Visual Studio.NET are all installed correctly and up to date.

Open Visual Studio.NET

File -  New Project

Select a New Visual Basic ASP.NET web application.

give the new web to be created a name.. I called mine "aspprotectdotnet"

Hit Ok..

Now. once the project opens up we need to delete a few things in the solution explorer window.

So delete "webform1.aspx" , "deletestyles.css", "Global.asax", "AssemblyInfo.vb", and "web.config"

Basically all the files under the project...

Now... you should have the aspprotect.net files unzipped somewhere on you hard drive...

open that folder and select all the files and folders like so

Now drag those selected files and folders to the solution explorer window of Visual Studio.NET right on to the name of the web. In my case "aspprotectdotnet"

It might say this folder already contains a folder names Bins.. just tell it to copy over and continue on any prompts like that.

You'll notice your project is now populated.

Open up the references tab in the solution explorer window as we need to add some references to the dlls in the bin folder of this project. This is needed so the compile process and function correctly.

Right click on references.. click add reference
Then browse....browse on your hard drive to the location of the new web and the bin folder within it.

In my case... "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectnet\bin"

Choose "aspprotectlicense.dll"

Hit open...

Now do the same thing again until you have added all the dlls in that bin folder to the references..

Now.. click add-references again and this time choose
"system.management" from the choices in the .NET tab

Once all of that is done your references should look like this

Now in the Visual Studio.NET menu system up top..

Choose Build - Build Solution

If you did everything right you will see something like this in the build window

------ Build started: Project: aspprotectdotnet, Configuration: Debug .NET ------

Preparing resources...
Updating references...
Performing main compilation...
Building satellite assemblies...

---------------------- Done ----------------------

Build: 1 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 skipped

You now have the visual studio side of things all set up.

To make the project actually run we now have to set some permissions and edit the web.config file.

Using windows explorer browse to the web the app is in. Right click on the "_database" folder and give that folder and all the child folders within it. Modify permissions for both the Anonymous webserver account and the ASPNET account. These accounts might not show up until you dig into the advanced tab and click find now to show all the accounts on the machine.

Permissions screen looks like this...

Once that is done go back the solution explorer window in visual studio.

Open the docs folder.. right click on "sysdiag.aspx" and choose view in browser.

It should complie the project again.. and then run that page in either the internal or external browser depending on how you have that set up.

That page will report back path information.
"BTW.. for security reasons this page should be removed from any production server after installation is complete.. this is very important"
In my case it looks like this.

Probabale AppRootPhysicalPath
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet

Probabale AppRootUrlPath
http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet

Probabale Path to Access Database
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb

Now we need to edit the web.config file... your going to need to know some of the path information above.

In solution explorer double click on web.config.

Now edit the AppRootPhysicalPath, AppRootUrlPath, and CN keys accordingly.

In my case they will look like this.

<!-- PATHS USED BY THE SYSTEM -->
<add key="AppRootPhysicalPath" value="c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet" />
<add key="AppRootUrlPath" value="http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet" />

<!-- MICROSOFT ACCESS KEY -->
<add key="Cn" value="Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};Dbq= c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb;Uid=admin;Pwd=" />

Now.. because our web is really not in the root of our virtual directory which starts at "inetpub/wwwroot" we need to edit another tag in this file.

Find the forms tag near the bottom.

<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />

Change it to say this

<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectdotnet/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />

Notice tha part in bold that we added.

Now, you may also want to check the temp license key info while you are in that file and make sure it is not expired but I am not going to get into that here.

Now save and close that file and do a compile again.

In solution explorer open up the "aspprotectadmin" folder.
Right click on default.aspx and click browse

You should see the login prompt in your web browser..

Log in with

admin
temp

all lower case

You should see the users screen of the application,

Click on the system info tab up in the top left... make sure all those paths are correct and save it.

Go to the settings page of the admin area. Make sure all those paths/settings are correct and save it.

Congratulations... you just set up a visual studio web project from scratch and our now ready to edit and compile an advanced web application.

From here on your on your own, but feel free to ask questions in the forums as you will probably get help from myself or others who own the software.

One last thing... because we are not in the true root of the web on the development machine the examples in the example folder will need the reference to the "protectpage.ascx" file modified before they will work

It will need to go from

Src="/protectpage.ascx"

to

Src="/aspprotectdotnet/protectpage.ascx"

If this app was installed in the true root of a domain on a real webserver.. you would not have to edit the forms tag in the web config file or change the paths in the examples as they would be correct the way they came

,

There was nothing wrong with the server configuration. It turned out that the problem was that I disabled the email notification of new user registrations that I continually receive. That appears to disable the authorization email to new users as well.

One other issue. It appears that AOL email addressee's are not getting the authorization email. Does AOL have any blocks to CDONT generated emails?

,

The random password is generated during signup and the function that creates it is located on this page of code.

users/register.asp

it looks like this

Function RndStr(Length, UseChrs)
 If IsNull(UseChrs) OR (UseChrs = "") Then UseChrs = "
0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz!@#$%
^&*()_+=-"
 NewStr = ""
 Randomize(CByte(Left(Right(Time(),5),2)))
For gpIndex = 1 To Length
  NewStr = NewStr & Mid(UseChrs, Int((Len(UseChrs)) * Rnd + 1), 1)
 Next
 RndStr = NewStr
End Function

For example go to this page and hit refresh and watch the password change.

http://www.aspprotect.com/demo2/users/register.asp

Yes, sometimes if you hit refresh quickly over and over you'll get the same password, but not generally. Also that is not something that would happen normally as a user isnt going to sit at that screen and hit refresh over and over.

Anyway... when signing up the new user of course has the option to change that password to something they would like better...

As far as... "selecting the same user name and password every time"

I need more information. That does not make sense for a lot of reasons.

Most importantly because usernames are not generated. The are inputed by the user during signup. They are then checked to ensure they do not already exist before the user is allowed to complete their signup.

So under normal circumstances there can never be duplicate usernames in the system or even users with duplicate emails as that is checked as well.

Now of course if you edited the code in any way it is possible all this is not working correctly ?

cwilliams38164.8059143519,

sorry, I am guilty of being very tired and didnt read your message fully.

I know this forum area is called "database connection issues" but it is only meant for generic issues.

Issues specific to a particular application need to go in that applications area in the forum. It keeps the forums more organized and helps other people fnd help later on.

So please post in the correct area.
I will answer this question soon. I have to do something 1st though.

,

Hello,

Sorry
No, there is not.

not the way the code ships.. The program keeps tracks of everything by the way it ranames files. The system has been tested to work well with as many as 10,000 images files. Any more than that and you need something a little more serious meant for that amount of images.

You could certainly modify it do work that way if you are good with source code. There are actually as many drawbacks as doing doing it that way as there are advantages.
Take Care

,

also.. the log out page shouldnt really need this
but you can try adding this to it where all the other ones are set to nothing..

<% Session("Groups") = "" %>

cwilliams38341.7215046296,

The Double DIM needs to be removed for this code to work properly.

<%
Dim BannerZone, BannerConnectionString, BannerDatabaseType, ConnBannerSystem
Dim CmdCheckUser, CmdGetConfiguration, App_Name, Config_SQL, BodyTag, BanDataConn
Dim CmdBannerTemp, CmdGetZones, ZoneString, ZoneArray, ZoneIndex, CmdUpdateWaiting
Dim CmdUpdateExpired, CmdRetrieveImpLimitedAds, CmdRetrieveImpressions
Dim CmdUpdateImpHit, CmdRetrieveAds, CycleBannerTotal, CycleList, NewCycleList
Dim Dim LoopBanner, CycleLoop, CycleListArray, CycleListArrayIndex, BannerCycleData
Dim Banner_Array, CurrentBanner, NewCycleListArray, Banner_Array2, LocationIndex
Dim Stop_Processing, Keep_Processing, CmdUpdateStats
%>

, I encountered the same problem and eventually found out that my Norton protection was not allowing scripts to work so I had to uncheck the setting before the banners reappeared., did you read what this thread says about that session variable for groups not be created by default

you have to add code so it sgets created before you can check it... this thread talks about that, Not sure what you mean about the path to the IIS files being wierd...what else should it be?  The wf directory is the root of the aspprotect stuff for this project.

I assume the permissions need to be read, write at least.  I was looking at the permissions dialog from a file explorer and I see a web sharing tab and a security tab.  I look at the security tab but I am not really sure which type of user I am looking for to add and give permissions to so that I can get it right.  Maybe that is not the right place to set the permissions....

Sorry to be "windows challenged" but I am not super familliar with all the different places to set various permissions for OS vs. IIS.  I looked in the "Internet Services Manager" and browsed to the logfiles directory and looked at its permissions...is that the place to set things up?  I see a "directory" and "Directory security" tabs...which is the important one?  I made sure "write" was checked and went to the directory security tab and enabled anonomous access....still no logs are showing up. Restarted server a bunch of times to make sure it took the permission settings.  I logged in and out correctly and incorrectly to see if a log would be generated but no luck.

The physical path to the logfiles directory is set correctly in the setup tab in aspprotect... sorry to still be baffled.

How do I know if the filesystem object is disabled on the server??  I can copy and paste things in there...

Thanks!!

,

I just added this line to the paypal1.asp page

<input type="hidden" name="currency_code" value="CAD">

and it worked.  Clearly other values can be entered for other currencies.  Everything was listed in this manual https://www.paypal.com/en_US/pdf/subscriptions.pdf.

Cheers
Roy

,

I assume you mean 500 pixels wide

no.. because you cant reliably tell a pictures image width without an image resizing component to look it up.. asp can not do things like that on its own

serverobjects has a free component called "imagesize" that can do it as well but you need access to the server to install the component
http://www.serverobjects.com/products.htm

so if you cant do that with regular asp code you definetly can not stop the upload proces because the picture is too wide..

heck, that would be nearly imposible to do regardless.. even with the best 3rd party components at your disposal

even with an image resizing component you would have to allow the upload.. then check the pixel width.. then delete it.. tell the user what is going on...etc etc  .. all a very complicated process

, ok, I got it all sorted out for you and aspupload seems to be working now.

Basically they seem to have an odd version of it installed and I had to tweak the code a little. I also uploaded the server info page in the admin area to test for it.

Just back up the gallery folder so you have a backup copy of the modified code.

CJW , good news.. like I said it is probably becuase aol blocks emails sent from IP's with no MX record in the dns system , Hi,
I really look forward to installing V7...
I would like to test V7 by copying my existing V6 to a NEW directory, including the database with new connection, and using this duplicate to do an upgrade for TESTING PURPOSES ONLY before commiting to upgrading the main system.

Should this cause any problem?

Tx,
Leon

,

do you have the smtp part of iis installed on your machine

cdonts needs that

then again I am not sure you can even use cdonts on a xp box without making some changes...

cdonts has kinds died out and as of windows 2000 basically got replaces by cdosys

,

It sounds like permissions... to the database folder specifically
they are not correct

It could also be that your odbc drivers are very new and you are not using a new enough version of the access Database. I recommened using the 2002-2003 verison of MSACCESS

Now.. if using a SQL Server Database permissions to certain tables are handled in enterpise manager

cwilliams38303.5892708333,

It's seems to work fine after renaming the file, rebuilding the application, and editing the web.config file to point to login.aspx. It looks like I can use your fine product and thanks again for the help. It was unusually easy. Merry Christmas…

, I believe that solved the problem as I have not heard from this person since I sent him the code.,
