Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 1:49:53 PM

i took another look at the file, and realized that when i was looking at the data structure i had confused "banner_image_URL" with "banner_link_URL". i lengthened the latter, and now all is good.

sorry for the false alarm, and thanks for a very-to-work-with product.

Hi Chris

After turing off the delayed stats feature the internal errors have stopped and it still serves banners, although I havent checked the logs yet. I will and post any errors.

I left my test page up last night at say 11pm serving 4 banners of different sizes rotating every 15 seconds, now at 9am the page is just displaying 1. If I refresh the page they all reappear.

Regards
Colin

I really do not know for sure, but I imagine there are customers using their windows hosting. Usually I do not know what hosting company a customer uses and I am usualy the only one that responds to forum questions.

Why not download the current Free lite version and try it out ?

, site looks fine in ie and also firefox from a windows machine..

I dont have a mac and I have not heard of that browser before

Sounds like an issue with the way that browser handles and puts together html/flash in relation to the layout of your site which is fairly complex

less likely - could also be related to computer processor/resources as that is a decent sized flash file and could bog down certain machines on the client level.. internet connection as well ?

those are my guesses.. I dont see anything wrong from windows xp web browsing from a fast machine and on broadband.. looks pretty nice actually ,

I am not sure totally understand your question.
I need you to explain it differently.

Any ".asp" page that is protected is going to automatically prompt them for a login box or log them in automatically depending on if they set that option.. In the end returning them to that same page.

So, it really all takes care of itself for the most part.. It doesn't even matter if the bookmark a protected page deep in your site. The system is smart enough to keep them at that page as well as handle their access.

Now of course if they are at an unprotected page of your site and navigate to a protected page they get a loin prompt or are allowed in if they already logged in...

Also.. when you say unprotected page ? do you mean ".htm" or ".asp"

cwilliams38298.6571759259,
Humm, Did you make any changes to the code ?
Solid Black is not the default so it must have changed at least once.
I did change the top_logo.gif and the associated link. That was on the default page not the Solid Black skin which is unchanged. After downloading/uploading the skins I tried changing it to one of the Beach skins and that's when it changed to Solid Black and has been stuck there ever since.
Otherwise it might be some sort of application variable problem.
I would make sure the web is and "application" in the IIS console.
I don't have access to the Microsoft IIS console as this is a host site. I can access the site's "control panel" but it does allow for those type of settings. Mostly just permissions, DSN entries, etc.

Thanks.

Editing using Visual Studio.NET

Here are directions for editing the application using Visual Studio.NET
2002 or 2003 version.. either should work

Some of you are wondering why I didnt just give you the project files.
It is best you go through this process and really understand what is going on.
Also, I dont use VS 2002 so I wouldnt be able to give you project files that would work with that. Not to mention there is 100% chance my prject files wouldn't work for you anyway because of path differences and other things.

Anyway.. on with the instructions...

1st.. make sure IIS, ASP.NET, .NET Framework, and Visual Studio.NET are all installed correctly and up to date.

Open Visual Studio.NET

File -  New Project

Select a New Visual Basic ASP.NET web application.

give the new web to be created a name.. I called mine "aspprotectdotnet"

Hit Ok..

Now. once the project opens up we need to delete a few things in the solution explorer window.

So delete "webform1.aspx" , "deletestyles.css", "Global.asax", "AssemblyInfo.vb", and "web.config"

Basically all the files under the project...

Now... you should have the aspprotect.net files unzipped somewhere on you hard drive...

open that folder and select all the files and folders like so

Now drag those selected files and folders to the solution explorer window of Visual Studio.NET right on to the name of the web. In my case "aspprotectdotnet"

It might say this folder already contains a folder names Bins.. just tell it to copy over and continue on any prompts like that.

You'll notice your project is now populated.

Open up the references tab in the solution explorer window as we need to add some references to the dlls in the bin folder of this project. This is needed so the compile process and function correctly.

Right click on references.. click add reference
Then browse....browse on your hard drive to the location of the new web and the bin folder within it.

In my case... "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectnet\bin"

Choose "aspprotectlicense.dll"

Hit open...

Now do the same thing again until you have added all the dlls in that bin folder to the references..

Now.. click add-references again and this time choose
"system.management" from the choices in the .NET tab

Once all of that is done your references should look like this

Now in the Visual Studio.NET menu system up top..

Choose Build - Build Solution

If you did everything right you will see something like this in the build window

------ Build started: Project: aspprotectdotnet, Configuration: Debug .NET ------

Preparing resources...
Updating references...
Performing main compilation...
Building satellite assemblies...

---------------------- Done ----------------------

Build: 1 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 skipped

You now have the visual studio side of things all set up.

To make the project actually run we now have to set some permissions and edit the web.config file.

Using windows explorer browse to the web the app is in. Right click on the "_database" folder and give that folder and all the child folders within it. Modify permissions for both the Anonymous webserver account and the ASPNET account. These accounts might not show up until you dig into the advanced tab and click find now to show all the accounts on the machine.

Permissions screen looks like this...

Once that is done go back the solution explorer window in visual studio.

Open the docs folder.. right click on "sysdiag.aspx" and choose view in browser.

It should complie the project again.. and then run that page in either the internal or external browser depending on how you have that set up.

That page will report back path information.
"BTW.. for security reasons this page should be removed from any production server after installation is complete.. this is very important"
In my case it looks like this.

Probabale AppRootPhysicalPath
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet

Probabale AppRootUrlPath
http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet

Probabale Path to Access Database
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb

Now we need to edit the web.config file... your going to need to know some of the path information above.

In solution explorer double click on web.config.

Now edit the AppRootPhysicalPath, AppRootUrlPath, and CN keys accordingly.

In my case they will look like this.

<!-- PATHS USED BY THE SYSTEM -->
<add key="AppRootPhysicalPath" value="c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet" />
<add key="AppRootUrlPath" value="http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet" />

<!-- MICROSOFT ACCESS KEY -->
<add key="Cn" value="Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};Dbq= c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb;Uid=admin;Pwd=" />

Now.. because our web is really not in the root of our virtual directory which starts at "inetpub/wwwroot" we need to edit another tag in this file.

Find the forms tag near the bottom.

<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />

Change it to say this

<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectdotnet/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />

Notice tha part in bold that we added.

Now, you may also want to check the temp license key info while you are in that file and make sure it is not expired but I am not going to get into that here.

Now save and close that file and do a compile again.

In solution explorer open up the "aspprotectadmin" folder.
Right click on default.aspx and click browse

You should see the login prompt in your web browser..

Log in with

admin
temp

all lower case

You should see the users screen of the application,

Click on the system info tab up in the top left... make sure all those paths are correct and save it.

Go to the settings page of the admin area. Make sure all those paths/settings are correct and save it.

Congratulations... you just set up a visual studio web project from scratch and our now ready to edit and compile an advanced web application.

From here on your on your own, but feel free to ask questions in the forums as you will probably get help from myself or others who own the software.

One last thing... because we are not in the true root of the web on the development machine the examples in the example folder will need the reference to the "protectpage.ascx" file modified before they will work

It will need to go from

Src="/protectpage.ascx"

to

Src="/aspprotectdotnet/protectpage.ascx"

If this app was installed in the true root of a domain on a real webserver.. you would not have to edit the forms tag in the web config file or change the paths in the examples as they would be correct the way they came

,

- I am using the original files that came with the software.
- The software ads items to the database flawlessly.
- ASPImage works great.

- When I try to remove an ad or an image it says it's been removed.
- The ad does not show up on the site anymore.
- BUT, when looking at the sql database the ad is still listed there.

Why is the software not deleting the columns from the database and the images from folder?

Note: My other tables for other projects, in the database, allow me to delete them.

,

Whenever you are running software that can block scripts from certain things you are going to have issues like this.

I imagine many complex asp scripts you will download will do things like this as well.

A highly doubt it is anything to worry about regarding people that use your site.

ASP code delivers standard html to the browser... nothing weird goes on as far as that goes.

This system has been sold for 6 years and this is just not something to worry about. Trust me.. though you may want to tone down black ice so it doesn't give you issues as it tries to block various things.

If I were you I would do some google searches on black ice and issues with it blocking asp scripts.. etc etc

Now, if you are running black ice right on the server that a whole other story and something you as a server admin need to decide what to do about. I doubt that is the case as black ice is not probably suitable for a commercial webserver but I just thought I would throw that out there.

,

FYI:

The articles you references were read over by me like 3 hours ago... way passed that and prob. in deeper sh*t than i was since im trying everything possible without knowing the true reason this is not working.

,

ok...

you got problems if you cant import a file created by the system..

You using SQL or MSACCESS and do any of the users data have apostraphes in it ?

,

Sorry Chris,

It didn't fix it.  Looks like I had the current code.  I bought the system in mid-April.  The version says 3-10-2005.

I do know that in the database, the password shows as " éG"  but in the error code, it shows as " éG".  The square character is missing.

Thanks,
Mick

Edit: well heck.  It skips the square box here too.  The password in the database puts a square box in front of the éG

,
Yep, thats my thinking as well.

On the test server I have the site connected to a SQL 2000 db with the sa account, so it should have full control. But still no luck.

However, on the test server, I connected to the Access 2002 db and it works fine..adding user, adding categories, adding albums.

Weird

, How do I customize the validation email that is sent to users when they first register?,

Yes.

Now its OK

Thanks Christopher

,

Okay,  I deleted out the aspprotect folder and started over.  I also took out the dsn connection to the ecommerce database and deleted out the subweb that had it, I decided to use another provided where the database is resident on thier servers not mine.

I broke my txt file into groups and it's loading sort of.  The first 1000 users uploaded fine...the second said it timed out, but when I looked at the access database it showed 2000 people.   The login still times out and every page seems to load incredibly slow still.

,

MSACCESS 2000

server: windows

option pack: yes (after the install I have this problems with groups and edit users )

host permissions: yes

MESSAGGE:
Active Server Pages error 'ASP0113' Script time out/password_admin/groups.asp The maximum amount of the time for a script to execute was exceeded. ...

vaghelis38300.5484143519,

No I didn't...

The one I tried is the hosted one at my provider which I gave you the link for.

Thanks very much.  I will get that one and it may be much easier if I need to get into the Nitty Gritty of the database at some time.

Thanks

,

I'm getting errors when clicking the Update Config Button in the System Info page and when clicking the log files button.

I'm not sure if it's a permission thing or not.  ASPNET and IUSR both have modify access to the _database folder and childs, yet I'm still getting the error:

Access to the path "D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectnet\_database\xsd\aspprotectne t_config.xml" is denied.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\_database\xsd\aspprotectnet_config.xml" is denied.

ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.

To grant ASP.NET write access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

Any ideas?

Thanks

, Yup, thats the problem I was having. I can get it to work if I don't do through the dl stream, but otherwise it prompts to save or open it instead of loading it in the browser.

I did read the change on making the content public instead of private so I think that will work for know...
,

Advertising ?? oh really.

It was named that because that way if you already have a login.aspx file for whatever reason it does not interfere which is a good thing. It has nothing to do with advertising.

Next off you never mentioned having an issue with it saying aspprotect in it. I am EXTREMELY clear about what I support and do not regarding ASPProtect.NET. If you are upset because I didn't tell you exactly what to edit and change in visual studio.net and hold your hand you are out of line. My god, I sent you to like the best and most detailed tutorial on how to setup and use the application with VS.NET that could ever exist. That took forever to put together. I even responded to your post on Christmas on a Sunday. I doubt too many companies would have responded on Christmas.

More importantly than that when you purchase code from CJWSoft you are purchasing digital source code and there are no refunds. Every single page in the CJWSoft family states that very cleary in the footer. I do not appretiate it when someone threatens a chargeback and as far as I am concerned anyone that does that is commiting a crime of theft. I also do not appretiate smart comments saying it's "obvious" etc etc

If you wanted to strike a nerve with me you did. If you want to commit a crime and be a thief that is your business as well. Obviously I can not stop that and the credit card company will take your side. I work very hard on the source code I sell and my policies on everything are VERY clear.

Advertising ??
Calling the credit card company ??
Obvious ??

nice, real nice

,

I appreciate the offer to beta test... but its really more a matter of me getting it ready..

I have a lot done.. but a lot of things are hard coded to only work on my machine and some things have not been sorted out. Giving it to someone else to test would be a waste of time at this point as I they probably couldn’t even run it.

Lately the reason this project has fallen behind has all to do with my main webserver where I collocate.

1st it got compromised (we think by certain competitors who are always up to no good)... then windows 2003 server which I decided to go with on the new server gave me random problems... then the Cisco hardware firewall was acting up and making the sites run slow....then SQL server attacks on port 1433 from Korea when I took the firewall down....and as of the last few days I think the server just needs a new power supply. I swear for the last 2 months I have spent more time administrating my servers than working on code. Yesterday it was locking up every 30 minutes. There have been a lot of days like that and it takes up all my time until I get it situated.  Especially since its over 100 miles to the collocation center. The APC unit I installed that allows me to remotely cut the power to hard reboot is a life saver.

Fun... I tell ya... and expensive.. (hardware, software, lost sales, and time) I am pretty much completely broke at the moment. It has been a very expensive few months.

But I like running my own servers... I run dns servers, email servers, sql servers, web servers.. I do it all. It's keeps me in touch with the latest software/hardware. Regardless , my servers ran well for years and they will again.

anyway.. hopefully I can actually get a new version of the photo gallery out before the month is over. It will probably be the last classic asp version. The version after that will most likely be ASP.net.

cwilliams38295.6248032407, Well, I had no more trouble after I read the instructions.

The PayPal integration is really neat stuff! WOW!  And the email users function got up and running in a snap... this is an awesome package!

The coolest thing with the user registration is that the account username and password are selected by the user. That is very very nice. Much less typing for me to do.
,

you not seeing the real error

http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11& PN=1

, okay thanks,

It a generic error that means something is wrong with your data connection.

,

Great Thank you!

As of thus far the program is working rather nicely.

I am very impressed :)

,

You really should just look at the documentation that came with the application. It tells you everything you need to know.

it is in the docs folder in html format.. it is also linked to from the aspclassifieds website

http://www.aspclassifieds.com/demo/docs/

, Because employees and sales reps might leave or go to work at competitors without our knowledge and we can't have them get an perm account so we need to implement some sort of expiry and then review their account with them.,

It happens at least once per hour or every time a banner is edited in the system by the admin.

Changing its frequency would be somewhat complicated. You'll have to make changes to the code in a few places and you will effect performance adversely by doing it more often as it will mean a lot more database queries which defeats the purpose of doing it once per hour to conserve resources. The reason is when you change the frequency of that you also change the frequency of the entire banner application variable caching system. It difficult to explain but it unlike most banner systems out there it basically fetches banner rotation info every so often instead of every single time your page needs a banner. It stores this rotation and cycling information in ultra fast application variables. The docs actually go over a little bit of how that process actually functions under "using the system / Setting Up Banners
"

Its a customization I just can not support and I do not recommend doing, but if you really want to you should look at the "aspbanner_inc.asp" file

this is the part that makes it happen at least once per hour (requires visitors to your site to happen obviously)... you'd have to cleverly recode it to work slightly more often

' Checks the time the banner data was last updated and basically updates it if an hour or more has passed
If Cint(Application("BannersLastUpdated")) <> Cint(Hour(time)) Then
%>
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="appinfo_inc.asp"-->
<%
End If

There may be more to changing this than that, but this is all I can tell you.

cwilliams38441.6427083333,

There are several pages on my website that a user may go to that are not protected (e.g. home page).  If the user has indicated that they want to be saved on this computer (until they explicitly log off), and their 1st entry point is to an unprotected page, how do I determine whether they have logged in before, and extract the info from the cookie / session variables without forcing them to log in or making the entry page protected?

,

It is refered to as the internet guest account but that isn't the actual username. The username is different for every machine. It usually starts off with "IUSR_" and then your machine name. "Internet Guest Account" is always the account's full name as labeled by IIS when it is installed.

Regardless,

If an account isn't listed you have to add it.

Click (add-advanced-find now) and it will list off all the user accounts on the machine

You can also click (add-advanced) and simply type in the account name or part of it.

Some more tips:

If on a local machine you always just give the "everyone" account full control which is pretty much going to make anything work.

You can also go to computer management in your server's administrative tools and view all of the accounts  and groups there under "Local Users and Groups".

cwilliams38417.7186689815,

There was nothing wrong with the server configuration. It turned out that the problem was that I disabled the email notification of new user registrations that I continually receive. That appears to disable the authorization email to new users as well.

One other issue. It appears that AOL email addressee's are not getting the authorization email. Does AOL have any blocks to CDONT generated emails?

, Okay, I'm going nuts trying to find that settings screen.

I've got a dedicated server that I connect to using "Remote Desktop Connection" so it looks like a regular Windows desktop. It's running Windows Server 2003.

There's a program called "IIS Manager" but I've looked at all the options for all the different sections and I don't find anything that looks even remotely like that screen.  And, of course, Windows Help is no help at all.

What program do I run to get to that configuration screen?

  Thanks,

  Robert Gidley
,

Update..

I have support for the ibulc image uploading client working.

http://www.ibulc.com/

There is also an option in asp photo gallery pro to store the images original filename in the description field which is pretty cool.

Ibulc client bulk upload support currently only works with the pure vbscript upload or the safileup component. (I may support the other two components asp photo gallery can use but it really depends on time) The pure vbscript upload code I am using for this is much better than the code I was using before so that method should be offer decent performance for anyone though using a component is always better.

I still have to add the ibulc feature to the users side. It currently all only works for an admin user.

The whole process is very cool. You install the ibulc client on you computer. It's tiny, and free for uploading up to 10 (100kb) pictures at once. You have to by a domain license from them to do more than 10. Anyway.. it lets you select multiple pictures off your hard drive and it then uploads them all at once with individual progress info for each picture. Its really cool and since it really treats each picture as an individual upload it doesn't hammer the server with one big upload at once.

I also made it so you can start the picture uploads at any picture number.
So if you already have pictures in an album you can add more without losing what is already there.

This was one of the main features of the new version and now that it is working hopefully I can tie up any loose ends and get the new version out soon.

cwilliams38327.5488541667,

How to bring up the Code Generators

Simply go to the zones screen.
Select a Zone from the list.
Check the "Show Banner Code" option.

Click on "Display Banners in Selected Zone"

,

I just finished implementing the V7 product on our site and someone made mention that on the profile form where you are asked all your personal and user information there are 2 fields for passwords.  The first field uses masking to hide the password as you type it, where the second shows it in clear text.

Now we know that the only people able to see the password are the user and the administrator, but it is playing mind games with my users as they think there is a problem with the application.  I am not a programmer (however, learning ASP slowly now!) and am not sure if you did this on purpose or if it is a bug?

If it was done on purpose, can you advise how I can make the confirm password field masked as well to eliminate the unfounded questions!

Thanks

,

I dont know. Perhaps a fresh installation in a new folder would be a good idea as well if possible..

for troubleshooting sake..

,

sorry.. you just said above you were using XP SP2 so that is the article I referred you to as I just assumed you were talking about your local web server

here is my article on permissions regarding server 2003
http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/windows_2003_server_and_ permissions.asp

I can look at your installation monday if you like. In about an hour I leave for a wedding thingie and I wont be around again untill monday around noon

Try the uploading using VBSCRIPT method just for the heck of it. Perhaps there is an issue with the installation of the dundas component.
