Hi, I am glad you like the system. Thx for the comments..
The banner logic in aspbanner it tweaked for speed and performance.. that sort of thing really wouldn't fit into the current code structure very well. It would slow things down and be a nightmare to code because of the way aspbanner uses ultra fast application variables for the banner rotation. Basically its a feature I didnt incorporate for performance and pricing reasons.
I would suggest making different zones for different conditions.. then surrounding the banner calling code with if else logic so a different baner zone was called under certain conditions.
That way performance would not be effected and you could actually show a different group of banners based on certain conditions.
Sorry, but that is the best advice I can offer at this time.
I built ASPBanner for performance and at this time I refuse to sacrifice that for any feature that will slow it down and consume more resources. cwilliams38383.5395601852, Well I still haven't gotten it to work yet completely. I tried to import the users again and it imported some, but timed out again. Trying to log in takes forever...ready to jump back on this one?,
Good Morning, any suggestions on how to best "fake out the system" -- I would like to try to keep this clean so I can see the real errors?
My thought was to try to just move those .gif files to the directory that it thinks it should be in -- do you have any better suggestions? Or reasons why I really wouldnt want to do that? , ASPProtect v7 comes with working example code of protecting an image from being downloaded and also protects the true file location of the image on your server..
This comes with the system as an example folder with some files in it.
(some of the initial purchaser's of the system might not have that directory.. if that is the case please ask)
Here is how it works...
Basically we protect the image in 2 ways.
- We use Javascript right click disabling code that works in both IE and Firefox.
- We stream the image via a special password protected ".asp" page and use an image tag to call it. This hides the true location of the file. You can therefore keep your images out of your web or keep them in a folder in your web that does not allow file browsing. Under this scenario even if someone looks at the img tag html source they can not tell where the file came from. Doing all of this allows you to offer certain images only to people that are logged in.
All in all this is should be very effective protection. Yes, there are still ways to get the images like doing screen captures, but this will ensure that people viewing images are logged in to your site. This will in most cases keep them from right clicking and saving the images. This will ensure that people can not tell other people the image's url location and it will ensure other sites can not leach your images and bandwidth.
For the image protection examples to work you may need to edit some values in the stream_pic.asp file that are valid for your setup.
Look at the source. The values you can edit are commented.
Now, you also need to call a valid "image file name" from the call_pic.asp file which is an example of how you protect a page with javascript and call a streamed image using an image tag.
Lasty, here is a great article I found on image protection and some of the things you can do about it and some of things you cannot.
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID =41 , Okay, thanks, I'm going to change the method tonight and see if it makes a difference
I'll report back
Dave , Access Database Password
By default all of the Access Databases we give out have a default password of "temp"
The Default username that and Access database uses is "Admin" but you should not be concerned with that except in your connection strings.
The default password for the Access Database can only be changed using Microsoft Access to do so. If you have security concerns it would make sense to change the password. The help system built into Microsoft Access best explains how to do that. cwilliams38403.6820833333, ok, well as far as what else to try I already told you..
you need to manually compare all those field settings with the sql script and make sure they all got set correctly...
you also need to tell me what email/name you ordered the application under... before I will continue this support with you.. at this point I don't know if you purchased the application or if you are using the unsupported lite version
, I had some issues with passwords not working. I cleared them up by
going to the affected user and typing in the desired password manually
on the edit screen. Worked like a champ every time, and I haven't had
to do that for some time now.
, Here is what I have in settings.

, People who have the option pack have a new feature called groups.
Groups are meant as a replacement for using the access levels as they are much more powerful. Support for pages protected using access levels is left in tact for backward compatiability for a customers older protection code.
A customer recently told me groups could not be used like access levels and that 8 access levels was not enough. This is how I explained that groups can do everything access levels can do.
Groups can honestly do everything access levels can do if you really think about it. Using groups and protecting pages accordingly you could actually create a system that basically worked identically to the way the access levels works.
For example..
You make 8 groups and assign users to them accordingly
Protection code on page allows access to groups 1-8 The aspprotect system generates this code for you…
<% GROUPACCESS = "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8" %> <!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
In this case a user assigned to any one of those groups would have access..
Protection code on page allows access to groups 2-8 The aspprotect system generates this code for you…
<% GROUPACCESS = "2,3,4,5,6,7,8" %> <!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
In this case a user assigned to any group between 2-8 would have access..
Protection code on page allows access to groups 3-8 The aspprotect system generates this code for you…
<% GROUPACCESS = "3,4,5,6,7,8" %> <!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
In this case a user assigned to any group between 3-8 would have access.. cwilliams38114.800775463, I'm having an issue importing. It moves the images from the /import folder and creates the thumbnails with no problem, but the full-size photos all have a size of 0 bytes.
http://www.larrysampas.com/gallery2/default.asp?CatLevel=2&a mp;Cat1_ID=1 , it makes zero sense really... in the 4 years we have sold this application this is really the weirdest thing anyone has had happen.., i took another look at the file, and realized that when i was looking at the data structure i had confused "banner_image_URL" with "banner_link_URL". i lengthened the latter, and now all is good.
sorry for the false alarm, and thanks for a very-to-work-with product.
, ok.
sorry then..
I just had a series of fraudulant orders this past week including today and the whole thing has me on edge. (foreign people getting my code for free and doing who knows what with it) When you mentioned calling the cc company it pushed all the right buttons.
Merry Christmas, Hi - When I try the mass email feature, I get an error that says:
ODBC Microsoft access driver) too few parameters expected 1
/aspprotect/password/admin/send_mass_email.asp line 280
Oddly...this feature works fine when I use the original admin user that you setup.
But I setup another one with my username and password (not test) - because I was afraid anything with "test" could get deleted.
Any ideas on why the new admin userid would not work? Note: I have not change any code from the original installation.
, just leave the databse where it is, use the connection string generated for you and most importantly... put in a request with alentus for permissions to be set
tell them "D:\Websites\www.mysite.com\aspprotect\data" and all of its child folders need change permissions (r,w,x,d) set so aspprotect can do its thing
until the permissions are set that connection string can not work
this is all noted in the installation docs... , I have been told it does as I got about 5 people or so who upgraded but I have not used SQL 2005 yet. I'll order a copy., Hi, we purched ASP Protect a few months back and had it installed on our hosting company under a "temporary" domain name -- cidrasensors.com
We are now about ready to switch this development site over to production and I need to change the domain from cidrasensors.com to cidra.com
My hosting company wants us to create a new accounting and re-set everyting up.
So...based on this, I have a few questions for you:
1. Do I need to re-install the software? or can I copy from one account to the other?
2. Assuming I can copy the software to the new account - are there changes that will need to be made to point to the new domain?
3. If I decide I wanted to keep the first account alive for development purposes (never turn on the website domain to the public) - would I need to have a seperate ASP Protect license?
4. If I decided to ask you to do the transfer for us - is that covered in the $20 Installation fee I saw on the web?
, noted.
1.) this has been explored and because of the way groups works is not feasable. Because us this I wrote code to allow you to view and sort all users for any group on the actual groups page. You pick a groups and then click the "Show Users" button
2.) noted , [QUOTE=spider]At the bottom of my "users" list page, it asks the question "number of users displayed per page"? After hitting a larger number than the default of 1-25, it increases the number of users per page to that number. But as soon as I leave that page, it goes back to the default. Any thoughts?[/QUOTE]
That is how it is supposed to work. It is not supposed to remember that info after you leave. If you want it to always start at some default number simply copy the URL info after picking a number. You'll see the querystrings that tell the page what to do in the address field of your browser. Take that entire URL and edit the button in the admin area to link to that. The links for the buttons are in the "header_inc.asp" file and you should edit that file with a text editor.
That's the easy non technical way to set a default on the users page and that applies to anything including doing a sort or whatever.
example...
you might change this
<a href="default.asp"><img src="../images/users.gif" border="0" alt="Users"></a>
to something like this
<a href="http://www.yoursite.com /aspprotect/password_admin/default.asp?SORTBY=Email+DESC& ;MyPageSize=500="><img src="../images/users.gif" border="0" alt="Users"></a> , Actually quite well. I have this problem worked out and it
actually isn't to bad. But now I am getting some strange
error messages. I will start another post.
Cheers
Roy
, I do not really know a lot about but it is basically code that lets you specify however many number of images and links... and then display a certain number of them at once.
You'd have to search google for it.. there are 1000 of sites that offer free javascript code and that is where you find scripts like that.
You could certainly set up all the images and links for each banner in aspbanner but if you used them with code like that you be limited to tracking clicks on banners. Tracking page impressions would not be possible because the javascript would be handling what images get displayed at any given time. Basically each link for each image would be going through aspbanners tracking url feeding it the banner id and therefore tracking the click and sending the user to the desirec URL.
Regardless, it is not something I would support. You would have to sort it out as it is nothing ASPBanner was designed to do and not something I want to deal with because client side javascript code is not something I am NOT very good with. , Can you incorporate a secure log in within the scripting. I would like the account information to be secure without having to have the whole site using running through a secure (https://) path. If this is possible, the scripting is perfect! , Message :
I purchased the V8 of the software yesterday. It is running on a 2000 Server with a MSSQL database. It is installed and I get the successful connection to database screen but when I click to enter the admin. console I continually get:
"Connection string not saved in (data/config/aspbanner_unlimited_config.asp) file. Most likey the data folder does not have proper permissions set on it. That folder and all of the folders within it need (R,W,X,D) Permissions set for the anonymous webserver account. These permissions can generally only be set by your hosting company."
I can save the string manually by hitting the button and I have checked that I have granted the proper access permissions. Any suggestions?
Ken, glad it is working now
sorry ya had trouble. cwilliams38418.6886342593, The main root of your web site needs a "aspnet_client" folder for .NET apps like ASPProtect.NET to run.
If this isnt quite right one of two things can happen.
1.) You'll get a pop-up error like this. 'Unable to find script library WebUIValidation.js'
2.) The ASPProtect login screen will come up but just not let you log in.
This folder only goes in the root. Not in subfolders and subwebs.
If you dont have this folder in the root of your web.
Read this article to learn how to properly create the folder. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/e n-us/cpguide/html/cpconconfiguringaspnetapplicationforaspnet version.asp
If the app is installed on a hosted server you'll need to ask them to do that for you.
You can also try copying a the folder from your own machine after creating it the way the article above says.
or
here is a copy of my "aspnet_client" folder created under the latest framework at the time of this writing. v 1_1_4322
2004-11-03_134912_aspnet_client.zip
I am not sure if copying it in is as good as having created by the server as I haven't had time to really test all of that but it should work. Ultimately all this does is put some files .net needs in the web. , thanks for posting this... Since "private" is the default setting from what I read and setting it to "public" cured the issue chances are leaving it at "public" is the way to go.

http://www.w3schools.com/asp/prop_cachecontrol.asp
ALSO: since you are one the few people that has ever contributed anything helpful to the forums I am going to reward you with a free copy of the password expiration mod. I am sending you a PM with the download info. , Perfect exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks , I just started using ASPJpeg, and i used the
"generate_new_thumbnails.asp" to create new thumbs of all of the
existing albums. It generates the thumbs just fine, but they
don't get picked up by the "Randomly Selected Photo" section. If
I upload new pics, they will show up in the random photo area.
So, it reads the new upload thumbs, but not the newly generated ones using your .asp page.
Is there anything I can do?
, Oh snap. Tried the blank database and got the same errors. Fixed THE
FILE PATHS to conform to the AspProtect 7 setup, and it worked like a
champ. I still need to copy and paste the info, but it's working just
fine with the ones I add manually.
Moral of the story: FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER.
, Thanks dude, I'll figure it out. I've been ripping apart pieces
of the code to get it. I'm in the process of pulling some things
out to make functions that do specific tasks based on your code.
I actually had a lot of luck yesterday with it.
, still.. its got to be somthing along those lines.. I have seen times when even dbo didnt have full rights to a particular database so permissions should always be manually checked..
The import data routine is most likely the source of the trouble
For troubleshooting sake I would create a fresh installation from scratch using the sql script we provide and a new SQL user. Then see if that works. If it does then try to import your data into that.
There are no other things I can think of doing. Sometimes you just have to start with a clean slate. , We would like to use some of the variables from the user account in our web pages after they log in (something like, 'hello <user>"), but for professional printout reports using company name and user.
Could you offer some help as to what variable string we use to print that information on logged in pages?
By the way, the program is working great!!! cwilliams38446.6302083333, how's it going ?, you password protect an asp page in your site "where that is is up to you"
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo171-1.htm
then you link them there from your own pages
thats all there is to it
is that what you are asking?
Additionally...any page you password protect automatically becomes a login page... where you want to start and where you send them after or before login is something you have to handle on your own
Any pages you pasword protect will prompt the user for login info if they are not yet logged in that is.
Then once logged in it returns them to the same page they are showing the page content as it would normally appear.
cwilliams38455.7128356481, Hi,
Sorry, but the way the system works you can not call an individual banner like that. It just not something the system was meant to do.
If you wanted a specific banner to show up at all times you would have to make an individual banner and a zone just for that.
After looking at your site since you have so many banners there I dont know if that is the greatest option for you. It would also put a lot of stress of the Version 7 software because it is not really meant to call so many banners zones at one time on one page.
If you could live with tracking clicks on the home page but not displays I would suggest making banners for the home page in one zone. Then hard coding the banner images into your homepage like you already do but linking to the tracking part of aspbanner instead of where they would usually link to. That way you could at least track clicks and there owuld be no performance issues.
for example.. one of the images might link to http://www.poconocommuter.com/aspbanner/banner_redirect.asp? Banner_ID=4
which would track clicks for you.. and then send then wherever they are supposed to go
, My site is composed of mostly asp based pages with some javascripting thrown in, but a fair amount is strictly html and javascripting. Currently I am using the javascript banner method throughout the site.
You have mentioned in the past that several other methods might be a better option for asp pages.
Examples would be: XML Parser Method or asphttp method.
I was wondering if it is possible to use the javascript method on my non-asp pages and maybe the asphttp method on the asp pages and all in the same Zone?
Or, is it possible to use the asphttp method on all pages, whether they are asp or not?
I'm just trying to figure out what is the most efficient way to use the banner system.
Or maybe should I just keep it all javascript method?
Any helpful feedback would be appreciated!
Thanks.
-john
, You would have to carefully edit the asp code in the "add_new_account.asp" file. It you look that file over with a text editor it is pretty easy to see where the text to edit is. Just make sure you edit it in the section for the email component you are using. Back the file up before you make any changes to it so you can revert back if you mess anything up., UPDATE..
Installed a new rack mount 1u server this week.
3.2 ghz hyperthreading 1 mb l2 cache prescott cpu 2 gb pf pc3200 kingston memory SATA Raid.. (2) 120 gb drives running hardware raid 1
It is a supermicro 1u server case and server motherboard. The hard drives are SATA 150 120 gb 7200 rpm Diamondmax Maxtors
All high end server type stuff... It's a very powerful server and has been running great all week. 500+ hours uptime so far.
Running Windows 2003 Server Enterprise SQL 2000 Enterprise SP3 SmarterMail SmarterStats Windows DNS ZipEnable (which I am reviewing for them) ServerMask (which I am reviewing for them) A ton of ASP Components which I have purchased over the years.
So that means I can now focus my attention on creating software again instead of being a system admin. (Due to these server issues over the past few months I am now back to godly status as far as windows system administration goes.. not to mention I am now back up to speed on the latest processors and hardware)
So, getting back to ASP Photo Gallery...
I spent about 20 more hours this week on the new version of ASP Photo Gallery Pro.. I have another 40 or more to put into it as I have a lot I want to do.
I think it will be ready within the next three weeks. I know a lot of you have been waiting for something.
cwilliams38331.5907060185, Great suggestion, routing the banner click through an intermediate page before the destination. We use Deepmetrix LiveSTATS.xsp V7 and I should be able to configure a filter to capture the stats of the intermediate page.
Thanks for the help! Lance ,
