you dont want to use the virtual smtp virtual server method... you want to use a real remote email server with valid MX records..
ultimately though after all that is going is it is out of the hands of the asp code and it becomes issues other then the code sending the email... regarding to whether or not emails get blocked by certain organizations
For example: I have many aol users sign up for various systems I have running without issue. I use CDOSYS with my own server mail.cjwsoft.com which has proper MX records set up.
I would also try to determine the difference between blocking and spam/junk email filtering. It is impoirtant to truly know what is going on. Sometimes adding more information to the body of the emails going out will eliminate the junk mail filters from gettings the emails.
Then you have the various open relay lists that places like AOL use. If your email server or IP sending the email is on those lists for spamming you do not stand a chance. That is all out of the hands of the ASP code.
, Editing using Visual Studio.NET
Here are directions for editing the application using Visual Studio.NET 2002 or 2003 version.. either should work
Some of you are wondering why I didnt just give you the project files. It is best you go through this process and really understand what is going on. Also, I dont use VS 2002 so I wouldnt be able to give you project files that would work with that. Not to mention there is 100% chance my prject files wouldn't work for you anyway because of path differences and other things.
Anyway.. on with the instructions...
1st.. make sure IIS, ASP.NET, .NET Framework, and Visual Studio.NET are all installed correctly and up to date.
Open Visual Studio.NET
File - New Project
Select a New Visual Basic ASP.NET web application.
give the new web to be created a name.. I called mine "aspprotectdotnet"

Hit Ok..
Now. once the project opens up we need to delete a few things in the solution explorer window.
So delete "webform1.aspx" , "deletestyles.css", "Global.asax", "AssemblyInfo.vb", and "web.config"
Basically all the files under the project...
Now... you should have the aspprotect.net files unzipped somewhere on you hard drive...
open that folder and select all the files and folders like so

Now drag those selected files and folders to the solution explorer window of Visual Studio.NET right on to the name of the web. In my case "aspprotectdotnet"
It might say this folder already contains a folder names Bins.. just tell it to copy over and continue on any prompts like that.
You'll notice your project is now populated.
Open up the references tab in the solution explorer window as we need to add some references to the dlls in the bin folder of this project. This is needed so the compile process and function correctly.
Right click on references.. click add reference Then browse....browse on your hard drive to the location of the new web and the bin folder within it.
In my case... "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectnet\bin"
Choose "aspprotectlicense.dll"
Hit open...
Now do the same thing again until you have added all the dlls in that bin folder to the references..
Now.. click add-references again and this time choose "system.management" from the choices in the .NET tab
Once all of that is done your references should look like this

Now in the Visual Studio.NET menu system up top..
Choose Build - Build Solution
If you did everything right you will see something like this in the build window
------ Build started: Project: aspprotectdotnet, Configuration: Debug .NET ------
Preparing resources... Updating references... Performing main compilation... Building satellite assemblies...
---------------------- Done ----------------------
Build: 1 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 skipped
You now have the visual studio side of things all set up.
To make the project actually run we now have to set some permissions and edit the web.config file.
Using windows explorer browse to the web the app is in. Right click on the "_database" folder and give that folder and all the child folders within it. Modify permissions for both the Anonymous webserver account and the ASPNET account. These accounts might not show up until you dig into the advanced tab and click find now to show all the accounts on the machine.
Permissions screen looks like this...

Once that is done go back the solution explorer window in visual studio.
Open the docs folder.. right click on "sysdiag.aspx" and choose view in browser.
It should complie the project again.. and then run that page in either the internal or external browser depending on how you have that set up.
That page will report back path information. "BTW.. for security reasons this page should be removed from any production server after installation is complete.. this is very important" In my case it looks like this.
Probabale AppRootPhysicalPath c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet
Probabale AppRootUrlPath http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet
Probabale Path to Access Database c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb
Now we need to edit the web.config file... your going to need to know some of the path information above.
In solution explorer double click on web.config.
Now edit the AppRootPhysicalPath, AppRootUrlPath, and CN keys accordingly.
In my case they will look like this.
<!-- PATHS USED BY THE SYSTEM --> <add key="AppRootPhysicalPath" value="c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet" /> <add key="AppRootUrlPath" value="http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet" />
<!-- MICROSOFT ACCESS KEY --> <add key="Cn" value="Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};Dbq= c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb;Uid=admin;Pwd=" />
Now.. because our web is really not in the root of our virtual directory which starts at "inetpub/wwwroot" we need to edit another tag in this file.
Find the forms tag near the bottom.
<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />
Change it to say this
<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectdotnet/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />
Notice tha part in bold that we added.
Now, you may also want to check the temp license key info while you are in that file and make sure it is not expired but I am not going to get into that here.
Now save and close that file and do a compile again.
In solution explorer open up the "aspprotectadmin" folder. Right click on default.aspx and click browse
You should see the login prompt in your web browser..
Log in with
admin temp
all lower case
You should see the users screen of the application,
Click on the system info tab up in the top left... make sure all those paths are correct and save it.
Go to the settings page of the admin area. Make sure all those paths/settings are correct and save it.
Congratulations... you just set up a visual studio web project from scratch and our now ready to edit and compile an advanced web application.
From here on your on your own, but feel free to ask questions in the forums as you will probably get help from myself or others who own the software.
One last thing... because we are not in the true root of the web on the development machine the examples in the example folder will need the reference to the "protectpage.ascx" file modified before they will work
It will need to go from
Src="/protectpage.ascx"
to
Src="/aspprotectdotnet/protectpage.ascx"
If this app was installed in the true root of a domain on a real webserver.. you would not have to edit the forms tag in the web config file or change the paths in the examples as they would be correct the way they came ,
grrrrrr
As far as the users thing... my fault that was setup wrong in the settings of the admin login page.
but still dont have a solution for what im trying to do , MySQL Database Setup
Use of MySQL is 100% unsupported as you can see from the site. http://www.aspbanner.com/mysql.htm
Even still I recently had an encouter with an extremely Jerky person (read the thread above for more on that) and because of him I am adding this tutorial showing one way to set things up on a windows server using the official MySQL tools available.
Let me just say as well that there are 100's of 3rd party tools to work with MySQL databases and many ways to create the database and apply the database creation script. In the past it had to be done via the command line, but now there are a lot of visual tools you can do it with. Furthermore all hosting companies set MySQL up differently and give you access to varius interfaces to manage it which are all different, and that is primarily why I do not support it. How the hell could I support all those different interfaces many of which are totally custom?
The fact is 99% of the people that purchased ASPBanner to use with MySQL have done so without issue and love how it runs. Regardless here is how I set up a working MySQL database on a windows server proving it does indeed run with a MySQL database.
1st of all if you are setting up the server you need to download some things from http://www.mysql.com/ (btw: you local developers can install this on XP Pro as well if you like.)
For this article we are going to download the current non beta windows version of MySQL which is 5.0. ALso known as the Windows Essentials (x86) download. It's about 17 meg.
Because ASPBanner uses the MyODBC drivers (now called Connector/ODBC) to connect to the MySQL database you need to download those as well. (Our site flat out says this is required for MySQL use)
So I download those from here. http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/3.51.html Version 3.51 has been the current version for a couple years now. You want the windows driver install which is about 2 meg.
The two downloads should look like this.

Now, on the webserver you run the version 5 setup (mysql-essential-5.0.19-win32.msi) I will guide you through it step by setp.

Hit Next

I am going to choose typical for the sake of this article.
Hit Next

Hit Next

Wait for a bit

I skipped this part.

Choose to configure the MySQL Now
Hit Finish

Hit Next

I am going to choose Detailed Configuration

Since I am on a development machine for this install I am going to choose Developer Machine. For a Real Server choose one of the server options.

For this article I am going to choose Multifunctional Database: You may want to pick one of the other options. That is up to you. ASPBanner will work under any of the scenarios.

I am going to leave the location at its default
Hit Next

Since this is a development machine these options are fine.
Hit Next

These options are fine as well.
Hit Next

Standard is fine for my development machine.
Hit Next

I am going to choose both of these options. The 1st one is Important and should be enabled on a real server so MySQL always runs. The 2nd is not so important.
Hit Next

Set the "root" password and do not forget it. You will need it to manage your MySQL server. I do not advise creating an anonymous account unless it is a development server and you just do not care. Whether you enable root access from remote machines or not is up to you so do some research on that. For this articles needs I am not choosing it.
Hit Next

Hit Execute and wait

If all goes well you will see this. (I actually got an error message about not being able to connect... I went to to Administrative tools/services and restarted the MySQL service and hit retry which cured that... it probably only did this to me since I have installed this before.. new installs probably will not have any trouble)
Hit Finish
Your done.. You just installed the MySQL Server (TIP: its usally a good idea to reboot and make sure the MySQL servce is running by default)
Now, moving on..
Lets install the MyODBC drivers.. (now called Connector/ODBC)
This one is a bit of a no-brainer so I am not going to go into detail. Just run (mysql-connector-odbc-3.51.12-win32.msi) and run through all the defaults until it is done.. Choose typical when that comes up.
Your done setting up MyODBC on the server. If its not your server I guess you don't need to worry about installing all of this as its your hosts job to do that.
, Okay, I'm going nuts trying to find that settings screen.
I've got a dedicated server that I connect to using "Remote Desktop
Connection" so it looks like a regular Windows desktop. It's running
Windows Server 2003.
There's a program called "IIS Manager" but I've looked at all the
options for all the different sections and I don't find anything that
looks even remotely like that screen. And, of course, Windows
Help is no help at all.
What program do I run to get to that configuration screen?
Thanks,
Robert Gidley
, any asp code that accesses an access database, writes to text files, or allows for picture uploading will need permissions set on certain directories
every application out there is going to need permissions set at some point
its just a fact.. and if your hosting company does not give you a way to manage permissions or have it done when you ask they do not know what they are doing and they are not supporting your asp hosting needs
see my article for more info on the whole process http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo136-1.htm the part newar the bottom talks about hosting companies , i was only kidding!! , User Information
After a user logs in there are variables that you can always access. They can be used to check various things or to display information dynamically based on who has logged into the system.
Session("PasswordAccess") Session("Access_Level") Session("Admin") Session("Active") Session("Expiration_Date") Session("User_ID") Session("Groups") Session("Redirection_URL") Session("Password") Session("Username") Session("First_Name") Session("Last_Name") Session("Company_Name") Session("Email") Session("Address") Session("City") Session("State_Province") Session("Zipcode_Postal_Code") Session("Phone") Session("Custom1") Session("Custom2") Session("Custom3") Session("Custom4") Session("Custom5") Session("Custom6")
You can display them on a page at any time using Response.Write like so
<% Response.Write(Session("FIRST_NAME")) %>
or like this
<% = Session("LAST_NAME") %> cwilliams38419.533900463, I am not talking about image resizing. I need to know if it is possible to limit the upload to images where their height or width is less than 500 PIX. , ok, then I need more information.
Was the code changed ? Thats the big one. If it worked and now it doesn't something must have changed. Things just don't stop working on their own. I would try putting the original files back in there for everything but the config and dataconn files just to make sure and see and if it works with the original files. (back up your old ones 1st so you can copy them back of course)
Also, perhaps PM me the site info so I can go look as well. , btw: who is this hosting company anyway ?
and did they give you access to a control panel that lets you manage your site ? sometimes that is where you manage those permissions if their interface supports it
lastly, are frontpage extensions installed in your web so it can be connected to via frontpage ?
, humm.. their FAQ is interesting...it looks like some sort of .NET configuration issue regarding security policies like you mentioned
Thats one of the big problems with hosting .NET. Some hosting companies just do do some oddball things. ASPProtect.NET works under default conditions but when hosts go around locking things down to the max there is bound to be trouble. This is the 1st I have heard of this.
Now, ASPProtect.NET does use the "System.Data.OleDb" and "System.Data.Odbc" which your host says they block because they require full trust.
All I can really say at the moment is go with a hosting company like www.alentus.com or www.maximumasp.com that does not restrict your .NET abilities so much.
In the meantime I am going to ask John Evans what he thinks about this.
, Hello,
It is very possible, however there may be some issues such as the session variables specific to a particular user would not be able to be created because there would not be a specific user.
I can't tell you exactly how to do it as it would probably take a few hours of messing around with the code to sort it out. Bascially, it's not something I could tell you how to do real quick and I do not support custimizations to the code.
But, it is very possible. You want to check the server variable for the IP address. The tricky part would be where and how this all just integrated into the "check_user_inc.asp" file , When I attempt to upload, it appears that the image uploads. I get a "Original Image Size 0 X 0 pixels"

they don't appear in the web pages, any thoughts? I am using VBscript to upload, my host has safileup but I am unable to use it in this script, thanks for any help
http://mcintoshcounty.org/real_estate/extras/server_info.asp
here's the site link
Never mind, had the path to the image folder screwed up , I have ASPPhotoGallery installed. Everything has been working great for some time. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, I am not getting the "Hits" incremented when a user opens an album. It works when an administrator is logged on. Does not for any anonymous users. Everything else seems to work fine. Again, this used to work. Any ideas. , been working on this for about 5 hours today.. I think I found the problem and it involves a vbNullChar that the encryption process is creating only during login attempts
it then messes up during ASPProtect authentication because it blows up the SQL Statement to the database
like I mentioned before the chances off this happening are slim but possible as two people so far have been able to create the situation
I seem to have the HANNAH password working now using your encrption key
I need a little bit more time to clean up the files I have been working on. Then I will give you new "check_user_inc.asp" and "check_admin_inc.asp" files to try out , Sounds to me like you got some bad databases or something. Or your trying to open a database with too old of a version of msaccess.. not sure
Everything is stored in one database. And yes there is more than just the users table.
Also, removing the "temp" password should be a piece of cake.
Email me for a new copy of the download file ? Use the contact from on the cjwsoft site. Please tell me your order details as well so I know who you are.
, Humm..
I have no idea where links to hose graphics are being called.
I checked the source of edt_banner.asp and I see no calls to any images named like that
I didnt see any calls in the header and footer files either...
, Chris,
2Checkout.com has added to their required cart parameters:
https://www.2checkout.com/documentation/newparameters.html
Do you have a version of 2checkout2.asp that will support these?
Thanks,
Nick , Ok I used the following for the sql string.. is this correct?
SELECT COUNT(Album_ID) AS Alb_Count FROM " & tbl_label_albums & " WHERE (User_ID = " & CmdListUsers("User_ID") & " AND Album_Active = '-1'" & ")" , enjoy the bar.. drink one for me.. cause that was the problem..
, ASPProtect version 6 does not officially support any sort of redirection or is it a feature.
You can however do redirection after login with some basic ASP if-else statements and ASP redirects. Basically you check the session variables after successful login and send users where based on that info. You of course also need to protect any pages you send users to and make sure any people that aren't supposed to go there do not go there directly and bypass your security.
I highly frown on Redirecting during login (In my opinion it is poor site design and it defeats the purpose of dynamic web pages, there is seldom a good reason to even need to do it if you design your site well) but you can check out this thread which should give you lots of good information.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=17&KW= redirect, Good Evening,
I have been trying to log into my site using the protected pages comments you have in support. I have copied the code in the ASPprotect 7 guide.
<%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
and pasted it in my page, set the the IIS to open this page and the page will not open it and the page will not open and the error is
Error Type: Active Server Pages, ASP 0126 (0x80004005) The include file 'check_user_inc.asp' was not found. /olem/reldt/introduction.asp, line 3
When I remove the two lines of code everything goes normally.
I have aspprotect in its own directory in the website. I have read the installation several times and I am afraid I am missing something blatently obvious so I really appreciate you thoughts.
I am presently using redirects. I like not haveing to use them as your comments have suggested. I have pulled all that code from the pages I desire to protect during this test.
I have three test users in my database - 1 administrator
Any suggestions?
Thanks and best regards
, This is great FREE SQL Server Web Data Administrator App from Microsoft..
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=C03 9A798-C57A-419E-ACBC-2A332CB7F959&displaylang=en
It is an ASP.NET web application that you install locally on your development server and then use to connect to a SQL database whether remote or local.
It can do nearly everything enterprise manager can do.
I have tested it and it works great for me. cwilliams38325.7453587963, ok, It looks like your product is perfect for my new site, but I have one question. One of the pages I want to protect on my site will be called by an application running on a remote server every 15 seconds. The application can include the username and password in the URL it is calling. Will your product allow access to the protected page on my server? , I am having problems with a password a user wants to use. He wants HANNAH. When he (or I) try to log in with his username and password, I get a syntax error -
Syntax error in string in query expression '(Username = 'changedforsecurity') AND (Password = ' éG'. pathOnComputer../1protect/check_user_inc.asp, line 114
I've obviously changed the username and the server path in the info above for security.
I have not messed with the encryption.
What is it that the system doesn't like in the word HANNAH as a password? I would just change his password for him but this guy has enough trouble just turning the computer on! Confusing him with a new password would take weeks to set him straight.
Thanks, Mick
, Here is the complete page with the error message:
============================================================ ===
Unspecified error
This means there is most likely a problem with the "ConnectionString" info that you specified.
If you are using a DSN-Less Connection with MSACCESS.
Check that the physical path to the database has been specified correctly. It has to be perfect and correct. It cannot be specified using "http://" or by using "server.mappath". It has to be specified like the following example.
ConnectionString = "DBQ=C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\advpass_pro\_database\passwords.mdb;Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};UID=admin;PASSWORD=Xpass"
If this is running on an NT server or Win2000 Server make sure that permissions have been set on the database. Only the server admins can do this. If you are not the admin you will have to ask for this to be done.
If you are using a System DSN
It is not set up correctly. Again, make sure the permissions have been set for the database and that the system DSN has been set up correctly by the server admins.
============================================================ ===
I am the only one on the site since I just transferred the files and in the testing phase. It is using an MSAccess DB
, Ok, so I checked to see if ASP is running on the server and it is. then I added code to the top of a page and this is what i can see when 'view Source' on the web browser:
<%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>
<!-- Begin ASPProtect Code --> <!-- Groups with access to this page. ( * Admins * ) --> <% GROUPACCESS = "4" %> <! #INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"> <!-- End ASPProtect Code -->
<html> <head> <title>TeamManagers</title>
Yet I get no challenage for a password and no error message!
, Glad your getting the hang of it.
no difference as far as that goes. It is just different ways to reference the server side include file and it's location on the server cwilliams38457.6019675926, thanks thats what i was guessing.
, Yes, thats cool.. post it here for sure.
Also, the way you allowed for your search engine is clever and probably was the easiest way to go.
You could do the same thing with the IP. Much easieri than the way I was thinking of doing it.
, no, its part the concurrent login checking system.
currently when that is on logging off does not come into play.. (pretty much because it is such a complex system I wasnt able to make it quite that intelligent this time around)
when concurrent login checking is enabled the only way to log in again at another system with the same username and with a different IP is to wait till that time period is over
sorry
as you may recall it was rush feature at the last moment before I got version 7 finished. Hopefully I can improve on the feature in the next version but I dont really see it as being a big issue at the moment. Sometimes when you want maximum security you have to make some tradeoffs and that is why the feature is optional. , Thanks very much for the tip. I'm a beginner with all this stuff so forgive me for the inate stupidity!
By the way, I think the system is great and I am very pleased my purchase. cwilliams38317.5552662037, Sorry about earlier post in wrong area-
I have followed instructions to set up access levels (adding the
<% CHECKFOR = "4" %> for user level 4 for instance.) The database is connecting properly and the basic check for login is taking place, but it seems that all users have access to all levels no matter what is on the database; i.e I set up a test page with "checkfor=4" and all users have access to it, even those with lower leve access.
Any ideas?
Thanks , Just installed software, when I attempt to log on I get the following error (actually this is after I moved some of the include files to user).
Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0131'
Disallowed Parent Path
/gallery_admin/default.asp, line 25
The Include file '../dataconn_inc.asp' cannot contain '..' to indicate the parent directory.
What do I need to do to fix?
thanks. , I assume that if I am using this product, search engines such as Google cannot access and index my content. Can somebody confirm that; I want to be 100% sure.
In case it matters, I am using a basic, cheap ISP setup where my site is on a shared server.
Thanks in advance. , also, from looking at your site your ideal scenario would be a system that allows you to show all banners in one zone at any given time but in a different order.
ASPBanner is just not that sort of system. It is only designed to show one banner at a time from a given zone in random order., yes, usernames and passwords are both case sensitive. It increases security. , But can you guess as to why the following might be happening:
1) The password is still "temp", and we verified that by checking dataconn_inc.asp ; 2) People are able to place new ads, etc. ; 3) We then download the DB. Sometimes we are able to open up the DB just downloaded with the password "temp", but only see the USERS table. At other times, we cannot open the same DB with any password, and get a "password not valid" message even when using the password "temp".
So what can the problem be? ,
