People who have the option pack have a new feature called groups.

Groups are meant as a replacement for using the access levels as they are much more powerful. Support for pages protected using access levels is left in tact for backward compatiability for a customers older protection code.

A customer recently told me groups could not be used like access levels and that 8 access levels was not enough. This is how I explained that groups can do everything access levels can do.



Groups can honestly do everything access levels can do if you really think about it.
Using groups and protecting pages accordingly you could actually create a system that basically worked identically to the way the access levels works.

For example..

You make 8 groups and assign users to them accordingly

Protection code on page allows access to groups 1-8
The aspprotect system generates this code for you…

In this case a user assigned to any one of those groups would have access..

Where is the system getting the random user name and password, and why does it keep selecting the same user name and password every time?

I would highly suggest setting up a DSN-LESS connection.

That system dsn is most likely the source of your trouble It is probably that or permissions are still not correct.

I can't tell you how many people have had trouble with system dsn's and finally set up a dsn-less connection and everything then worked as it should.

The location of your database is fine as long as permissions are truly set correctly like I mentioned.

Also, be sure you are setting the database type correctly in the dataconn_inc.asp file. That can cause problems as well as some people have been known to delete that line.

It happens at least once per hour or every time a banner is edited in the system by the admin.

Changing its frequency would be somewhat complicated. You'll have to make changes to the code in a few places and you will effect performance adversely by doing it more often as it will mean a lot more database queries which defeats the purpose of doing it once per hour to conserve resources. The reason is when you change the frequency of that you also change the frequency of the entire banner application variable caching system. It difficult to explain but it unlike most banner systems out there it basically fetches banner rotation info every so often instead of every single time your page needs a banner. It stores this rotation and cycling information in ultra fast application variables. Its a customization I just can not support and I do not recommend doing, but if you really want to you should look at the "aspbanner_inc.asp" file

this is the part that makes it happen at least once per hour (requires visitors to your site to happen obviously)... you'd have to cleverly recode it to work slightly more often

I have been using this solution for over a year now and think its great, however I recently logged on to add a banner and when I clciked on the link that opens a window, displaying all the gifs in the directory../images/banners/, now images showed up, however they do exist in that directory.

I recently upgraded my computer and am now using windows XP...could that be the problem?

When I designed the system I never really intended people to type in long descriptions for pictures

and if they did I assumed they would use the enter key once in while..

but I guess people dont do that

Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.

I have seen that happen before though it usually just happens once and then after that it doesn;t show up. It's the asphttp component doing it. The ASPBanner system is not doing it. I would try using banner calling method such as the xml parser method. It's usually installed by default on 200 and 2003 servers.

Well I have the web hosting tech looking into the memory issues at this point.  Unfortunately I don't have another machine to be able to run the asp on that would run it correctly so that I can just publish it over.

Ahhh....yes, I always forget about the cache.  That's exactly what it was. 

 I had made modifications to the import_pics.asp file, because I added more fields to the db, and made the import folder path dynamic, but I seem to have forgotten to add in the response.expires=0

Once I added this back in it has stopped messing up.

What was happening was, it wasn't overwriting the files, nor were they too big, but you would click on one thumbnail in an album(category) and it would display a picture from a totally different category.  It seems browser cache was the culprit, however.

My ISP uses ASPSmartMail. The email confirmation works except when I try to register an AOL user the server returns an error 500.

If you bought ASPBanner Unlimited Version 7.3 Before August/01/2004 this file needs to be updated.

It fixes a bug where CODE type banners do not work correctly with a weight higher than 1.

Basically, blank banners will rotate and you will see nothing sometimes.

Copy this file into your ASPBanner folder over the existing file of the same name.

(User Search & Contact Mod) for ASPProtect Version 7.x

This will allow an individual user to search for other users as well as email or call them.

Notes: This is a down and dirty mod. The users page from the admin area was used as a starting point. I then edited it up real quick to be used as a user search. The way it is it shows the user email as a regular email link. If you want to set it up so emailing is done from the application and emails are not actually shown you will have to do some extra work. If you don't want phone numbers shown you will have to remove that column which is not very difficult.

Directions:
Back up your existing ASPProtect installation.

copy "search.asp" into your "users" folder

Using frames with forms based authentication is not the best thing to be doing. Your much better off not using frames and using includes files to do a virtual frames sort of thing (search google) but if you are going to use frames I would suggest password protecting the frameset page as well as any pages it contains.

If you want to have a login form in a non protected top frame all the time.. that posts to a lower frame that is password protected.. you would do this

As long as they have cookies enabled which is required for session variables to work... then you will have no issues because once they come back to a page they have permission to they will just be allowed in without login.. at least while that session is still active.. or for a longer time if they choose the remeber me option which keeps track of them with a cookie .

Really, the best thing to do is expirment and see how things behave.

I am beginning to wonder if you unzipped the download correctly because I see things in folders they should not be in...

you should have ended up with a bunch of folders and files...

It you just ended up with a ton of files in one directory you did not unzip the zip file correctly... if so check your zip program settings.. I mean that error is because it is looking for a file in the skins folder that isn't there and it should be there

better yet, unzip the downloaded zip file using windows xp built in unzipping features which will do it correctly...

User Registration

The "users" folder allows users to sign themselves up and edit there accounts as well as retrieve lost passwords..

In the settings tab of the ASPProtect admin area there are options for which fields are used and which are mandatory when a user signs up. The only validation the system performs by default is checking for mandatory status. If you want to add more validation so reduce the chances of input errors that is up to you.

You can add additional server side validation by doing server side checks on the save pages... you can also make the field sizes larger in the database if you think you need to. You'll need to be good with ASP to do this.

Always backup your files before making changes to them so that you can revert back to a working copy if you mess something up.

Hi,

I wanted to see if you had any suggestions for converting from Access to SQL sever database. I attempted this earlier today performing the following steps.

1) Create SQL Tables using Enterprise Manager / SQL Scripts
2) Use DTS to move all of the existing table data to the sql tables.
3) Update dataconn_inc.asp to use SQL and the required connection string.

When these steps were complete I was able to login to ASPProtect as an admin and search / find both groups and users. However, any attempt to edit or create users resulted in a "the page ... had a problem ... " type problem. It seems that I can read from the db fine but and getting errors writing to the tables. The user id that is being used to connect to the db is the [dbo].

Any additional hints for this procedure?

On second thought guys, it would must easier to change the code using modulus as follows:

This will end each row and create a new row after each 6th picture. It'll be must easier code to work with and change.  This code must be placed in the PicIndex For Loop.

provided you arent trying to grab the injectbanner page through an iframe call which is only for use with the javascript method of calling banners
