Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 1:44:13 PM
This issue came up once before and when I investigated I could find no error in the html that aspprotect generates and those files do exist where they are supposed to. We concluded it was a parsing error from the log file system.
There just really isn't anything I can do about it. I spent a week trying to figure it out. It is just the log parser screwing up under certain circumstances where there is no reason anything is wrong. They have trouble dealing with some of the complex URL/querystrings that the ASPProtect admin area uses. They think there is a 404 eror when there isn't... etc etc
, Hi Chris,
I've got a page with a form that includes an input field with
'type="file"' for uploading an image. The page posts back to
itself to save the info to the database and run the code necessary to
upload and resize the image.
I need to limit this page to a group. So like usual, at the top of the page I put:
<% GROUPACCESS = "1" %>
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="../check_user_inc.asp"-->
This gives me the error: "Cannot call BinaryRead after using Request.Form collection"
I have used ASPUpload and SA-FileUP before and know that this is caused
by the components having their own .form collection. This script
is using "Pure ASP File Upload" from DMXZone for the upload which I'm
not familiar with.
So...my question is, do you know a way around the BinaryRead problem wtih ASPProtect?
Thanks,
Michelle
P.S. PLEASE don't send me to DMXZone for help....they've got notoriously bad support!
,
Hi there, I am not exactly what you mean when you say "moved some of the include files to user"
are you saying you are moving files around ? I am not sure what you mean there.
but.. the parent path issue is described in detail here
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo5-1.htm
Having is enabled is actually a requirment of the photo gallery application as stated on the web site
http://www.aspphotogallery.com/aspgallery_pro.asp
You can certainly still use the apllication but as that article says you will need to change any file includes to virtual includes so they will work with parent paths disabled
, one thing to note... the time period we are talking about is going to to be whatever you have the session timeout set at in the settings.
perhaps making that value lower like 10 minutes is an option for you.. and might help to deal with situation
, nice. I love learning at least 1 thing every day, I purchased two site licenses for ASP Protect a while back and am now trying to implement the application.
The connection to the database is fine, because it recognizes the user and displays the user name. However, there must be a problem with the permission because I get the DNS error information from the On Error in the check_user_inc.asp file.
I set the permissions on my PC as you indicated, both on the folder and the database file. But get the error and cannot access the database to view or modify. I also uploaded the file to my web server and set the permissions as well, but get the same problem.
You mention on your forum that it is not the code, but I don't understand if the code is correct and if it finds the database and the permissions have been set as you indicate, why doesn't the code work?
, All fixed and working
Thanks
, That is by design, removing and deleting are two different things as far as the classifieds system goes.
A regular user can only remove an ad from the category index. (which makes the ad inactive)
An admin however can truly delete an ad from the system.
, "do you know a way around the BinaryRead problem with ASPProtect?"
Let me rephrase:
Do you know a way in which ASPProtect can be modified to get around the BinaryRead problem?
Thanks,
Michelle
, nice idea. id be interested to see your modifications for ideas, Adding Support For ServerObjects ASPMail
ASPProtect as you know does not support ServerObjects ASPMail component by default.
Here are directions to make it work.
In the ASPProtect admin settings area simply pretend as if you are using the softartisans sasmtp mailer component. ASPMail and that sasmtp component share the same properties… and the code used for them is nearly identical.
So search through the code for any place where email is sent and simply change
Set Mailer = Server.CreateObject("SoftArtisans.SMTPMail")
To
Set Mailer = Server.CreateObject("SMTPsvg.Mailer")
It is about 4 places. They are not too hard to find.
That’s the easy way to get all the emailing functions working with ASPMail
cwilliams38419.7864351852, sure, there are reasons AOL would block the email.. it might think it is spam or it might not like the fact that fact that a cdonts generated email has no MX records because it can not..
for more on MX records read my CDOSYS article
http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/sending_email_cdosys.asp
as far as the emails not being sent because notifications are off. I was not aware of that and will try to look into it.. Version 6 is no longer worked on but if I can find the time I will check that out
, Microsoft has a free version of SQL server 2000 than you can run on a development machine.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=413 744d1-a0bc-479f-bafa-e4b278eb9147&DisplayLang=en
This is really the same thing as the MSDN version of SQL server that comes with Visual Studio
It is limited in two ways.
No single database can exceed 2 gigabytes in size. However, each Desktop Engine server instance can contain many databases, each of which can be up to 2 gigabytes in size. Each computer can host up to sixteen instances of Desktop Engine.
Performance will rapidly decline when more than five simultaneous users use the database engine at the same time. With five users or less Desktop Engine will operate with full SQL Server speed.
After you install this your going to need a way to connect to your sql server as well as a way to run queires on it.
I suggest either install the client tools off any SQL 2000 Installation Disc (giving you enterprise manager and query manager)
or use the FREE SQL Server Web Data Administrator which will do amost everything you will need to do. It is really very slick
http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=127& ; ; ;PN=1
Then you have a pretty sweet setup for testing and developing locally using SQL server.
If you are wondering why someone with a real SQL Server 2000 cd wouldn't just install the real SQL server locally it is because the server part will usually not install on XP Pro or non server versions of windows for licensing reasons. (at least every SQL 2000 CD I have is like that regardless of whether it is standard or enterprise) But the client side tools on the cd are invaluable so I just install the Desktop Version of SQL along with the client side tools and everything works great.
, I have imported like 50,000 users into an access database when testing... it took like 4-5 minutes but worked..
course it really all depends on the setup how many you can get away with
something must still be wrong
have you tried just importing 1 or 2 users for troubleshooting sake ?
I would also recommend that after any timeout you reboot the server or at the very least do an "iisreset" to get things back to normal
, at this point I would say install a fresh untouched copy in the web in a different directory and lets see if it acts weird from scratch.. the we can go from there.. I dont know what is going on
, I need to use SQL for other reasons than efficiency. If I create 2-seperate databases, would there be a lot of code to edit?
Thank you.

, More Info in Case Anyone is Interested:
This bug was mentioned by a couple people. The cause of it was never really understood until I recently re-wrote some of the banner code for an upcoming version.
The fix for this bug was very simple. It was just one of those weird situations where code should have worked but did not. I added some code to do it a bit differently and it worked as it should have..
It really still makes no sense to me why it didnt work the way it was, but at least there is a fix.
cwilliams38203.5883680556, I just did a quick google search... found a ton of info on how to find the setting. Here is one...
These are directions for IIS6 but the process is similar for IIS4-5
- Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- Double-click your computer name in the left pane, and then double-click Web Sites.
- Locate the Web site and directory that houses the ASP application.
- Right-click the application site or directory, and then click Properties.
- Select Home Directory, and then click Configuration.
- Click Options, and then click to select the Enable Parent Paths check box.
- Click OK two times.
cwilliams38148.5822453704, no, that system only works with ASP.NET code.
Currently it can not possibly work with classic asp.
PayPal made it a nightmare to use and work with.
Special things regarding the signing of digital certificates also need to be installed on the web server so if it isn't your server your also out of luck.
, You can't unless you plan on editiing and custimizing the code.
The application is only designed to have one kind of admin and that kind has full access to the admin area.
You can of course give any user access to stats for their banners via the bannerstats page.
That is how it works. There are no other levels of admin access.
, in the version you have changing it is not something we covered
I believe you will find it the "config_inc.asp" file in the root though... be careful with naming it though because if you use any spaces or weird characters it might cause issues with various functions in the application like emailing.. I recommend just using letter, numbers, and maybe dashes
, My Admin user got corupted, and I need to reset the password and user, what is the defualt password for this database, as I do not think I have changes this (hopefully) as of yet.
Regards,
Paul
, far as I can tell it does... that session abandon thing called in the logoff page should be enough to cover everything
once thing to be careful about
If you log in.. then log off... then go back to a page and do a refresh... you may in fact be reposting the username and password from before.. thus logging yourself right back in
Perhaps not.. all depends on what your doing... but it is something to be careful of when testing
cwilliams38341.7390509259, Hello,
While there is no option in the admin area / asp code we give you here is what I can tell you.
You have the source code and we also use an open database structure. (MSAccess or MSSQL) So that means you can really run any query you want on the database whether with ASP code or directly in your database. You can even tie other systems and code into the database via OBDC and manipulate data. The sky is the limit.
In MSSQL you can run queries in SQL enterprise manager or query analyzer. Using Access you can run queries in query view.
It's really not that hard if you do some research on SQL Statements and how to use them. You can do some very powerful queries and save yourself a lot of time. , as far as permissions are concerned I wrote two large articles about permissions that cover everything in detail on how to properly set them
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/info11.htm
see the windows 2003 and windows xp permission threads
From things you are saying I assume this is your server. My comments about the path looking funny are because very few commercial hosts would use the "c:\inetpub\wwwroot\" directory. If you are using that and that is correct info then that is fine.
as for knowing whether or not the filesystem object is working the best thing to do is to try to write a text file somewhere in your web and see if it works. Testing something under the most basic scenario is the key to troubleshooting asp issues.
http://www.devasp.com/samples/writetofile.asp
, What other information do you have ?
Details are very important.
Info on situations where it works... like OS, browser version.. etc etc
Info on situations where it does not work... same stuff
size of the PDF files ?
server info ?
Maybe protect a page and offer a PDF file so myself and some of the forum users can try it and report back what happens.
Also, Many people zip up PDF files when letting people download them as browsers can act pretty odd at times with them. Perhaps that is an option.
, Hello,
If you are using ASPProtect Version 7 it is possible because version 7 supports html emailing. In any other version it would require some custom coding to add html email support. You would have to sort it out by experimenting and editing the emailing code. All the email methods have documentation on the web in some form or another showing how to send html emails.
Also,
sometimes depending on the email component being used and the email client reading the email a link in a text based email will get hyperlinked automatically. For example outlook usually will do that, but it doesn't always in other situations.
Lastly, we have special upgrade pricing should anyone want to upgrade to ASPProtect Version 7. It really has a ton of great features.
Best Regards,
Chris Williams
www.CJWSoft.com
cwilliams38415.6414236111, Say, I just thought of one last thing.
Your not by any chance running something like norton antivirus with norton script blocker on that server are you ?
It can cause issues when ASP uses the filesystem object and cause never ending page hangs like you are having.
There are other apps as well that can cause it to hang.
http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2180
And ASPProtect does use the filesystem object., that is because passwords in the import/export files are encrypted.. if you make one of your own you need to use the rc4 function in the "config_inc.asp" to encrpyt your passwords just like the aspprotect system does (requires knowledge of vbscript and integration into your export system)
now, there is a way around this
if you want to import a file you made with clear text passwords edit "import.asp" beforehand and change
If UserArray2(5) <> "" Then CmdAddUsers.Fields("Password") = UserArray2(5)
to
If UserArray2(5) <> "" Then CmdAddUsers.Fields("Password") = RC4(UserArray2(5), PasswordEncryptionKey)
that way it should convert your clear text passwords to encrypted while it does the import
this post also addresses this but in the reverse scenario
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=261&PN =1&TPN=1
I hope this helps you because I really do have to leave the office like right now. Very late for a dinner meeting.
I should be back on the computer later tonight or tommoro morning
, When I go to set up a new user, my user name and password are already in the window. And I am un-sure why. I start a new browser, and again that my same user name and password is in that window., Its a great idea. I didnt really check the counter until the album started working. Its a great concept though., okay thanks, pretty clever...
If anyone is interested in what the Mod function actually does this article explains it nicely. They even use it for the same purpose in the examples.
http://www.asp101.com/articles/steven/mod/default.asp
cwilliams38210.6791898148, I have sent an registration email (as test) to both a yahoo account and also my own email server and in both cases I get the same issue, all else is working great. I am sure its somthing simple, perhaps I am over looking somthing else. the site url is www.rochestertek.us/asp/users/register.asp if this helps
Again thanks.
, perhaps the filesystem object is disabled on the server ?
or some sort of script blocking is running and causing a problem ?
other than that I can take a look if you put it up on a live server.
, ok, I am going to do that in the next few hours. I cant do it right now as I have a few other business's and something else needs my attention right now.
Chris, I swapped a few emails with CJW regarding support for ASPMail.
This application works with this software. I host my site with a
private hosting company named 'Intermedia.net' and this is what I had
to do to make this application work.
1 - Change email settings to 'SASMTPMail' installed
2 - Find all instances of the following code:
If ASPMail_Installed = true then
&nbs p; Set Mailer =
Server.CreateObject("SMTPsvg.Mailer")
Else
&nbs p; Set Mailer =
Server.CreateObject("SoftArtisans.SMTPMail")
End If
Change this code to simply:
Set Mailer = Server.CreateObject("SMTPsvg.Mailer")
3 - that was about it. The files that I needed to change are:
/users/email_password.asp
/users/add_new_account.asp
/gallery_admin/approve_album.asp
/email_friend.asp
I believe that's all i needed to change. Any questions I'd be
happy to try to help out. [CJW -- for some reason i needed a
restart on the server, it's all good now
http://www.iphotosite.com/galleryapp/default.asp. I'll be putting
in a redirect for that location/domain later today.

, I would like to change this file name to the typical Login.aspx, how to do this? I have a VS 2003 but need instrutions if that's the route to go., Just copy the files over. have permissions set on any folders that need it, and edit the data connection so it's valid for the new server. Once you get logged to the admin area go update all the settings so any urls are valid.
really its no different than a new installation so just follow those directions but use your existing files.
There is no domain pointing involved...
As logn as the old stuff is not accesible on the live internet you don't need another license.
As for my installation fee of 25. That is only for new installations. I charge more for something like that as there may be compications such as custom changes to the code that I would have to deal with. Customers often custimize the login and users area.. etc etc .. and there may be hardcoded urls and what not to worry about changing.
LASTLY, I noticed all your other posts are in the ASPProtect 7 area so the installaton process for that is a bit different than for Version 6 so what I said above is not quite the same process. Please make sure you post in the correct area when asking questions. , whether you use SSL or not really does not effect aspprotect in any way
I say, the smart thing to do there is too not start them off at a http:// url
one way to do it is put a simple ASP redirect on that default page and send them to an SSL version of the page instead...
http://www.powerasp.com/content/code-snippets/redirects.asp
another way would be not start them off on a protected page right off the bat and offer links to the the protected area...
in my opinion thats pretty odd to be starting them off on a protected page anyway
SLL maybe, but protected right from the time they hit the default page of the site.. thats just odd.. usually you want o say a little something about the site your at and then link people to protected areas or give them a login form which posts to a protected area.
Regardless if you always want users at your site under https:// you should have code on every single page in your site checking the url info at every page load. Then if someone ever hits a page and is not using the https:// you can do something about it like redirect them to the SSL home poge or redirect to that same page but with the https:// in the url..
