Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 4:34:27 PM

ASPProtect v7 comes with working example code of protecting a file download.

This comes with the system as an example folder with some files in it.

(some of the initial purchaser's of the system might not have that directory.. if that is the case please ask)

Here is how it works...

Basically we protect the file download by only allowing a logged in user to download it. The special ".asp" page we use the stream the file is password protected. It also hides the true location of the file so you can keep your files out of your web or keep them in a folder in your web that does not allow file browsing. Under this scenario even if someone looks at the html source they can not tell where the file really came from and they can only download if they are logged in and you offered them the link to the file.

For the file download protection examples to work you may need to edit some values
in the stream_download.asp file that are valid for your setup.

Look at the source. The values you can edit are commented.

Now, you also need to call a valid "download file name" from the download_link.asp file which is an example of how make a download link to the streamed download.

Lastly, we provide a working example. Now, you obviously may need to customize it to fit your needs. Please realize you are going to have to make special download links in your .asp pages and not only should you only show those links to people with appropriate access to download the files, but you should also protect the streaming download page accordingly as well as far as level, groups, and particular users. What I am saying is which files a particular user is allowed to download is not automatically handled by ASPProtect in any way. We give you all the tools to provide protected downloads to logged in users, but if you have complex needs you’re probably going to need to come up with a system that works for you. It's not really difficult because we did all the complicated stuff, but its something you have to sort out.

Perhaps someday in the future ASPProtect will have an interface to upload files and associate them with certain users. But at the moment it does not.

, well, like I said.. I am leaving in about 5 minutes for the wedding.

If you put this up on a live server that I can connect to I will look at it tommoro for you. I have told you everything I could possibly tell you so I dont think your going to figure it out based on the things you have told me so far.

Only other thing I can think of is make sure your not running anything goofy on that server 2003 box. Norton Antivirus script blocking... various ad blockers.. anti spyware applications... etc etc... They can cause problems as well. ,

SQL Database Creation (NEW INSTALL)

If you are creating a new database do so using SQL enterprise manager.
Create a new database called whatever you like and keep all the default settings. If using an existing sql database skip that step.

Now open up SQL Query Analyzer

unzip the following sql script and open it in query analyser.
2005-02-20_132116_aspprotect_v7_sql_script.zip

VERY IMPORTANT
On the drop down box at the top right make sure your intended database is selected. Otherwise your changes may effect the wrong database in your SQL server.

Then load the script  into the Query Analyzer.  Click the green play button at the top. If everything goes well the response should read something like this.

******************************************************
(1 row(s) affected)
******************************************************

If so the tables have been created in your existing database.

Now make sure an existing or new SQL user has (public / datareader / datawriter) permissions for the new tables. You will be referencing this user in the asp code connection string so this user must be set up correctly. You may need your SQL server admins or hosting company to help you on this step as you may not have access to do this. You may not need to create a user and set permissions as the sql user you were logged in as to use query analyzer may by default get the correct permissions on anything you create.

Regardless, as you can see from this screenshot I made a SQL user called "aspprotectuser" and proceeded to set the permissions for that user. Under database access giving him (public,datareader, and datewriter permissions).

Now, in the ASP files provided with ASPProtect edit "dataconn_inc.asp" with a text editor and modify the connection string info. Be sure to change the info to match your server,username, and password.

Below is an example of valid connection string.

ConnectionString = "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=poseidon;Initial Catalog=aspprotect;User Id=aspprotectuser;Password=temp;"

The  "Data Source" setting is either the Network Name for the SQL Server or the IP Address. For local servers you can sometimes use an IP of "127.0.0.1" or the name of the local server.

"Initial Catalog" is the name of your database.

Now, in the ASP files provided with ASPProtect edit "dataconn_inc.asp" with a text editor and set the DatabaseType variable to SQL like so.

DatabaseType = "SQL"

cwilliams38403.6834953704, I like to change my database from access to SQL.
I run the aspbanner.sql in the database and
then I checked the new database tables with the screenshots
from your support info.
Then I make a ODBC Connection and it looks very good,
I logged in and create a zone, but I was not able to
store it.
I got the following message:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers- Fehler '80040e07'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Bei der Konvertierung eines char-Datentyps in einen datetime-Datentyp liegt der datetime-Wert ausserhalb des gütigen Bereichs.
/adserve/aspbanner/appinfo_inc.asp, line121

Please can anyone help me, that aspbanner also run on my SQL Server ?

Best regards Josef Raschko
,

humm, did you edit any of the registration code ?
this is not something anyone has ever mentioned and the aspprotect 6 code has not been changed in over a year ?

can I see where there is happening ?
I may need ftp or frontpage access to the server in order to troubleshoot unless you can provide me with more details here.

thx..

,

Thanks!  Will try both.

Appreciate the support.

,

Thanks for that. The upload size is just as effective and possibly a better solution to maintain server space.

What about individual gallery permissions. So only 1 member can post in only 1 gallery. I have a forum of 500 plus members so if they want to add a gallery than setting a permission would be idea for each gallery.

, ok, well that should not be a problem then.. its meant to be able to be put in a folder like that.. just make sure the folder is not a subweb or anything like that... meaning dont set the folder up to have its own application in IIS. Just use a regular folder of course that is part  of the root iis application.

Perhaps you just didnt edit the paths in the settings like I mentioned., Then you should have current enough code.

If you PM me the encryption key you are using and the plain text password for this user I can see if I can reproduce the error and come up with a fix.

I believe you found one of the rare examples where the encryption creates a strange character that messes up things. Sometimes those characters are not even visable.

Changing the password should solve the problem in the meantime.,

Chris -

Long time no talk, which is a good thing.  I have purchased another product from you, ASPVendor.  I am running into an issues.

When I try and remove the image through the image manager, it does not remove it.  Screen shot attached.

Thanks

,

My site is composed of mostly asp based pages with some javascripting thrown in, but a fair amount is strictly html and javascripting. Currently I am using the javascript banner method throughout the site.

You have mentioned in the past that several other methods might be a better option for asp pages.

Examples would be:  XML Parser Method or asphttp method.

I was wondering if it is possible to use the javascript method on my non-asp pages and maybe the asphttp method on the asp pages and all in the same Zone?

Or, is it possible to use the asphttp method on all pages, whether they are asp or not?

I'm just trying to figure out what is the most efficient way to use the banner system.

Or maybe should I just keep it all javascript method?

Any helpful feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks.

-john

,

Humm.. that should have worked fine

why are you getting a "OLE DB" error I wonder ?

I need more information.

Database being used and version ?
Server OS Version?
Connection String being used ?

etc etc

,  I moved the password check file out of /user and am getting this message:

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0400'

Expected statement

/asplog/check_user_inc.asp, line 404

End If
^
Is this a standard database connection error so I should ask my IIS to make sure permissions are correct?
Thanks..!
, One month later, things are running very smoothly. Color me "satisfied customer"! ,

I am using cdont to send email. what do i have to do send email to other display my full name instead  of email address. In other word I want to see first name last name  in their email client instead of email address.

thanks for your help

,

Yes, you are right.

We have now tested it using the DSN less connection with Access 2002 and it works fine. We have also tested it again with a DSN using 2002 and this also seems to work.

The comment about speed is a consideration although I have not noticed any differences. ( we only have a few database entries at this time).

Thanks for your help

, while technically that shouldnt be showing that with two slashes that is actually valid and will not effect whether that feature works or not.

so if you are getting an error that is not the reason.. as far as windows is concerned // is the same as slash in that scenario?

what is your error? I need details. Like some code and an error at a line number ?

99% of the time it is permissions and sometimes it is related to the filesystem object being disabled on the server or script blocking software such as norton antivirus , "get_me_in.asp" just hangs during a new install. Nothing happens no matter how long you wait and IIS may temporarily hang up as well.

You may very well be running something like norton antivirus with norton script blocker on your server? Or something similar?

It can cause issues when ASP uses the filesystem object and cause never ending page hangs like you are having.

Read this..
http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2180, Along with being able to set an expiry date or number of impressions, is it possible to add another option for a banner to be "non-expiring"?

With our current ad software (which we are transferring all data from to ASPBanner), we run banners for both paid advertisers, and for our own services. The banners relating to our own services, we would like to set to "non-expiring" so they appear all the time. , the txt file is only lke 624 kb...so I'm not sure,

ahhh ok.. I was going to wait till morning to answer this one..

glad ya figured it out

,

Understood.... can you point me to a place where there are other methods of calling banners?  Do you mean not use Flash?  I am new to this and will need some pushing over the cliff!

Thanks

Dave

,

humm

expiration dates in the aspprotect system are not used at all when using paypal subscriptions.. all date handling is done on their end actually

and they of course send notices from their system to the user regarding their subscription and when it renews,cancels, etc etc

so I am pretty sure any errors with that would have more to do with the info you used for the subscription setup and possibly any paypal settings associated with it

its hard to say at this point

The smart thing to do I think.. would be to sign up someone using another PayPal account (your allowed 2)... and while doing it be very careful about the subscription setup data.. and then as soon as the subscription is created review all the info in the paypal system and see if the length of the subscription / expiration.. etc etc in the paypal system info looks right..

at least then you can begin to troubleshoot what is going on...

,

yeah.. thats an old graphic probably only seen in a few places.

it is not on the main site
http://www.cjwsoft.com/
or here
http://www.aspprotect.com/
or here
http://www.aspbanner.com/
or here
http://www.aspclassifieds.com/
or here
http://www.aspphotogallery.com/

but I am sure there are a couple of pages left over still using it like the aspvendor and asplistings pages.. etc    I am aware of it, just been too busy to go change them and I didn't consider it a big deal

2003 servers are NT based anyway

, its that server, it's way underpowered when it comes to running dynamic code and databases.. and that other app is probably stealing all the leftover odbc resources..... did you try doing the import on another machine running ASP? Thats the way to go.. I am afraid I won't be much help at the moment.. I am battling with a crashed system and a lot of lost data,

What am i supposed to do now... i do have another member server that is not a domain controller-

However, i have like 5 websites running on this domain controller already. I have thought about this before how its a HUGE security risk but it will take too long to configure everything on the other computer :(

, [QUOTE=afifm]

I was actually able to do similar thing by allowing our dedicated search engine to access the site unchallanged.

<%
If Trim(Left(Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_USER_AGENT"),11)) = "MYPASSWORD" Then
 SearchFlag = True
End If

If SearchFlag <> True Then
If Session("Access_Level") > CHECKFOR or Session("Access_Level") = "" Then
%>
<!--#include virtual="/Auth/check_user_Code.asp" -->
<head>
<title>My Title</title>

</head>

<body>

My Protected stuff here

</body>

</html>

For this to work, the search engine must pass the PW to the web site. I just was not sure how to do the same thing with IPs. I will play with the code and see what happens. If it works, I will post it here to help others, if this is OK with forum rules.

Thanks,

Mo

[/QUOTE]

I just added couple of lines and it works fine

If (Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR")) = "xxx.xx.xxx.xxx" Then
 ' Session("PasswordAccess") = "Yes"
 SearchFlag = true
End If

,

Our webhost changed converted all sites from c: to d:, and without us doing anything else, our customers now get the following error message when trying to access our Classifieds site:

***********

Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Not a valid password.

This means there is most likely a problem with the "ConnectionString" info that you specified.

If you are using a DSN-Less Connection with MSACCESS.

Check that the physical path to the database has been specified correctly.
It has to be perfect and correct. It cannot be specified using "http://" or by using "server.mappath".
It has to be specified like the following example.

ConnectionString = "DBQ=D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\advpass_pro\_database\passwords.mdb;Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};UID=admin;PASSWORD=Xpass"

If this is running on an NT server or Win2000 Server make sure that permissions have been set on the database.
Only the server admins can do this. If you are not the admin you will have to ask for this to be done.

If you are using a System DSN

It is not set up correctly. Again, make sure the permissions have been set for the database and that the system DSN has been set up correctly by the server admins.

************************************************************ *********************

We did everything the web host asked us to do, that is, changed all references to the C drive to new references to the D drive, but the error is still there.  We also never changed any passwords (as far as we can remember).  Can someone please tell us where to look (also which file might tell us what the correct password is in case it has in fact been changed.

Scaramouche38306.4845833333, re-edit the banner to ensure your change was saved..

if it has been written to the database thats good.. if not it is a data connection issue most likely..

if it did get saved... though it usually should not take time to apply  it make take up to an hour for the change to take effect in the actual banner rotation.. give it a little time, do you want my help making the database with your import file ?, I assumed when it said "expected path" that it understand that was the default and unless I wanted it in a different directory I could leave that blank.  I'm checking on it now., Hi there...

I'm using the gallery script with ASPImage for uploading and resizing. I bought this script and the componant for the the auto-thumbnailing feature, and it is indeed uploading and resizing and creating a thumbnail.

But the thumbnail is *tiny* at 64px wide. I need to change the width, but I can't find anything in ASP Gallery or ASPImage to indicate where that width is set. Can anyone help?

Thanks!
, alternate databases are right here.. the documentation clearly links to this, its really not difficult to find

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo164-1.htm, you can whatever you like but like I said those gif files are already in the correct place. The log parser is messing up. , Thanks dude, I'll figure it out.  I've been ripping apart pieces of the code to get it.  I'm in the process of pulling some things out to make functions that do specific tasks based on your code.  I actually had a lot of luck yesterday with it. ,

The only major usability issue I've found to date is multi-zone banners. Cloning is helpful to a point, but then if you have a change to that banner, you have to make the change 6 times or what have you. I think, even at the expense of speed, multi-zone capability for a single banner would be excellent addition. Of course, that supposes I haven't just missed it and it's already there.

cwilliams38453.6665509259,

Okay,  I deleted out the aspprotect folder and started over.  I also took out the dsn connection to the ecommerce database and deleted out the subweb that had it, I decided to use another provided where the database is resident on thier servers not mine.

I broke my txt file into groups and it's loading sort of.  The first 1000 users uploaded fine...the second said it timed out, but when I looked at the access database it showed 2000 people.   The login still times out and every page seems to load incredibly slow still.

,

I'm using Aspimage and SQL. Photos are 2464 x 1632 px, tried the upload and import directory methods, same results: thumbnails ok, full images 0 bytes.

, if you are talking about IPN subscriptions and how they work paypal has detailed manauls on their site.. if you are talking about asp.net in general there are probably a lot of good books..

the reason I said look at the aspprotect 7 code is cause the applications and database are very similar and the same techniques will apply for the most part as far as how the ipn subscription posts from paypal talk to the database and what happens during the various post events.. etc etc etc ,

I don't believe that the iframe method is supported in a .NET (aspx) implementation, is it?
