Having a quality professionally set up ASP.NET server that is going to support your needs is CRITICAL whether it is yours or someone elses. Them saying they will not set permissions is useless. Quite honestly Network Solutions is a joke when it comes to ASP.NET hosting. They are all about CHEAP MASS HOSTING and that is not where you go when you plan on running complex ASP.NET applications. What good is ASP.NET hosting if you can not permissions set on folders you need it for? A lot of people run ASPProtect.NET and their hosts set permissions for them without issue. We made one folder that they could click on and set all permissions at once easily. If they truly knew anything they would understand that and set permissions for you in a heartbeart. You have to have a correctly set up server or a hosting company that is serious about your ASP hosting needs.
I mean you come to us with this mess of a situation, we tell you its a bad setup. We tell you to rebuild the server correctly or make a new one. Now instead of doing that you come to us with another mess of a situation. Now you act all frustrated because you have spent so much time on this. How the heck do you think we learned everything we know ? Do you think we have never spent weeks on a problem or stayed up for 4 nights in a row without sleep. That is how you learn and it is called experience. I have no sympathy for someone that complains about how long something took because I am right there with the best of them and I have paid my dues.

Granted you may not be "Joe Coder" but you are definetly "that guy" who doesn't really know what is going on with ASP.NET. "that guy" who sets up his own server and knows enough to be dangerous. You definetly have enough sense/basic skills to dig around and read articles and try things but when you are on the wrong track that only helps out so much.
Also: I really was pretty tired when I got home last night, but now that I really think about what you did with that webserver/domain controller is about the worst moves possible when it comes to IIS hosting setups.. That is just SO BAD !! Now, don't think that I haven't done some REAL stupid things in the past. John too, like the time 5 or so years back when thought he could make a Windows XP Pro webserver for serious non development use . Anyway, that is how you learn. I suggest you get your server running correctly (not a domain controller) or you get a real host like www.alentus.com for your asp hosting needs. I mean you can get an account for like 10.00 a month and end all these headaches right now. I even know one of the head techs there as well as the general manager. Their ASP and ASP.NET support is 2nd to none.
You may not like what I have to say, (hell, I can pretty much guarantee you won't) but I tell it like it is and in the long run you will be better off for it.. We spent a ton of time developing the .NET version of this product and we sell it way less than it is worth especially since we provide source code. It is an awesome product, but if the server isn't truly and correctly supporting ASP.NET or they host will not set permissions than it is out of our hands. As far as I am concerned anything else is a waste of everyone's time. I am not going to play that game. Quite frankly, you need to get your stuff together. Nothing you have come up with so far has anything to do with a bug with ASPProtect.NET. Everything has been server related.

Nobody running the site off any computer but your development machine is going to see those pictures because the url isnt valid for them

Often times they are not set correctly or people thingk they set them somehow but in fact did not do it the correct way.
I would also suggest using the "test_physical_path.asp" page in the "extras" folder to verify if the path you are using to the database mdb file is in fact correct. That page should work whether permissions are set or not. At least then you will know if the path is correct or not and you can go from there. , Sorry, should have added, if i change the connection string, i can also get this...
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified , Humm, its hard to explain but I am not sure that is a good way to be testing that. I hear what you are saying but I am not sure that really means anything. Whatever is going on its some sort of client side issue with the browser and the meta refreshing over a very long period of time during which there really is no user doing anything at the site. , right..
I had to open up the permissions to get it to work. I now have to go back and uncheck each one for directory listing.. :)

Steve , Whenever you are running software that can block scripts from certain things you are going to have issues like this.
I imagine many complex asp scripts you will download will do things like this as well.
A highly doubt it is anything to worry about regarding people that use your site.
ASP code delivers standard html to the browser... nothing weird goes on as far as that goes.
This system has been sold for 6 years and this is just not something to worry about. Trust me.. though you may want to tone down black ice so it doesn't give you issues as it tries to block various things.
If I were you I would do some google searches on black ice and issues with it blocking asp scripts.. etc etc
Now, if you are running black ice right on the server that a whole other story and something you as a server admin need to decide what to do about. I doubt that is the case as black ice is not probably suitable for a commercial webserver but I just thought I would throw that out there. , Hi Chris,

and yes, users cant delete albums.. they can only turn them off which really means the albums lose their active status

If you PM me the encryption key you are using and the plain text password for this user I can see if I can reproduce the error and come up with a fix.
I believe you found one of the rare examples where the encryption creates a strange character that messes up things. Sometimes those characters are not even visable.
Changing the password should solve the problem in the meantime., If you PM your site info and I can go in and troubleshoot. I have no more ideas. Usually people have zero issues installating this application as I got it pretty tweaked so I need to see what is going on in order to help., just leave the databse where it is, use the connection string generated for you and most importantly... put in a request with alentus for permissions to be set
tell them "D:\Websites\www.mysite.com\aspprotect\data" and all of its child folders need change permissions (r,w,x,d) set so aspprotect can do its thing
until the permissions are set that connection string can not work

It was named that because that way if you already have a login.aspx file for whatever reason it does not interfere which is a good thing. It has nothing to do with advertising.
Next off you never mentioned having an issue with it saying aspprotect in it. I am EXTREMELY clear about what I support and do not regarding ASPProtect.NET. If you are upset because I didn't tell you exactly what to edit and change in visual studio.net and hold your hand you are out of line. My god, I sent you to like the best and most detailed tutorial on how to setup and use the application with VS.NET that could ever exist. That took forever to put together. Every single page in the CJWSoft family states that very cleary in the footer. I do not appretiate it when someone threatens a chargeback and as far as I am concerned anyone that does that is commiting a crime of theft. and like in the "example" protected pages we provide

Using frames with forms based authentication is not the best thing to be doing. Your much better off not using frames and using includes files to do a virtual frames sort of thing (search google) but if you are going to use frames I would suggest password protecting the frameset page as well as any pages it contains.
If you want to have a login form in a non protected top frame all the time.. that posts to a lower frame that is password protected.. you would do this

As long as they have cookies enabled which is required for session variables to work... then you will have no issues because once they come back to a page they have permission to they will just be allowed in without login.. at least while that session is still active.. or for a longer time if they choose the remeber me option which keeps track of them with a cookie .
Really, the best thing to do is expirment and see how things behave.

If you need to find out the path to the mdb file you can use server.mappath to get that info but do not put server mappath in the connecting string. See my article again.
then if the database folder has proper permissions and the path to the mdb file is valid it will work... otherwise you get useless errors, its really that simple.

I have looked at all the documentation and can't find something that explains how to do this. I am thinking that I can set up a log in as the default in my root directory that will have a form with an action=check_user_inc.asp. I have looked at the code there but cannot find a place where I would place a redirect to home1.

We have now tested it using the DSN less connection with Access 2002 and it works fine. We have also tested it again with a DSN using 2002 and this also seems to work.
The comment about speed is a consideration although I have not noticed any differences. ( we only have a few database entries at this time).

I just got done trying it myself and it worked great for me too. I was aware of the security issue, but I'd already planned on using SSL for this particular call, as well as for the secured pages accessed through the normal process, so the bad guys will be kept at bay.
