issue resolved.. new files did the trick, and the permissions, how exactly were they set ? I find a lot of customers think they are setting permissions correctly when they really are not. That's why I wrote that long article on the subject.
As you probably know a data connection is a very low level thing. It is the foundation of any ASP application that communicates with a database. Unfortunatly it sometimes takes a while to get the hang of setting them up without issue.
Everything must be perfect.. the ODBC drivers must be up to date, folder permission are critical, sometimes you must use a new version of the access database.. etc etc etc The errors and things that happen when all these things are not perfect and not helpful as you have found out.
I would suggest you download and get ASPTest from CJWSoft running before you go any further. It is designed to be as simple as possible and helps get a hang of the database setup process. ,
its that server, it's way underpowered when it comes to running dynamic code and databases.. and that other app is probably stealing all the leftover odbc resources..... did you try doing the import on another machine running ASP? Thats the way to go.. I am afraid I won't be much help at the moment.. I am battling with a crashed system and a lot of lost data, I uploaded the files designed for an aspprotect folder at the root of my site (mysite.com/aspprotect) and went to mysite.com/password_admin/get_me_in.asp and receive this error:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0xf54 Thread 0x908 DBC 0x90c41dc Jet'.
/aspprotect/scripts/populate_config_variables_inc.asp, line 11
I am assuming my host has still not set rights properly and that is why I receive this error. Am I correct?
I will definitely recommend hosting company you suggested for our businees site. , I'm getting errors when clicking the Update Config Button in the System Info page and when clicking the log files button.
I'm not sure if it's a permission thing or not. ASPNET and IUSR both have modify access to the _database folder and childs, yet I'm still getting the error:
Access to the path "D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectnet\_database\xsd\aspprotectne t_config.xml" is denied.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\_database\xsd\aspprotectnet_config.xml" is denied.
ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.
To grant ASP.NET write access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.
Any ideas?
Thanks
 , Editing using Visual Studio.NET
Here are directions for editing the application using Visual Studio.NET 2002 or 2003 version.. either should work
Some of you are wondering why I didnt just give you the project files. It is best you go through this process and really understand what is going on. Also, I dont use VS 2002 so I wouldnt be able to give you project files that would work with that. Not to mention there is 100% chance my prject files wouldn't work for you anyway because of path differences and other things.
Anyway.. on with the instructions...
1st.. make sure IIS, ASP.NET, .NET Framework, and Visual Studio.NET are all installed correctly and up to date.
Open Visual Studio.NET
File - New Project
Select a New Visual Basic ASP.NET web application.
give the new web to be created a name.. I called mine "aspprotectdotnet"

Hit Ok..
Now. once the project opens up we need to delete a few things in the solution explorer window.
So delete "webform1.aspx" , "deletestyles.css", "Global.asax", "AssemblyInfo.vb", and "web.config"
Basically all the files under the project...
Now... you should have the aspprotect.net files unzipped somewhere on you hard drive...
open that folder and select all the files and folders like so

Now drag those selected files and folders to the solution explorer window of Visual Studio.NET right on to the name of the web. In my case "aspprotectdotnet"
It might say this folder already contains a folder names Bins.. just tell it to copy over and continue on any prompts like that.
You'll notice your project is now populated.
Open up the references tab in the solution explorer window as we need to add some references to the dlls in the bin folder of this project. This is needed so the compile process and function correctly.
Right click on references.. click add reference Then browse....browse on your hard drive to the location of the new web and the bin folder within it.
In my case... "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectnet\bin"
Choose "aspprotectlicense.dll"
Hit open...
Now do the same thing again until you have added all the dlls in that bin folder to the references..
Now.. click add-references again and this time choose "system.management" from the choices in the .NET tab
Once all of that is done your references should look like this

Now in the Visual Studio.NET menu system up top..
Choose Build - Build Solution
If you did everything right you will see something like this in the build window
------ Build started: Project: aspprotectdotnet, Configuration: Debug .NET ------
Preparing resources... Updating references... Performing main compilation... Building satellite assemblies...
---------------------- Done ----------------------
Build: 1 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 skipped
You now have the visual studio side of things all set up.
To make the project actually run we now have to set some permissions and edit the web.config file.
Using windows explorer browse to the web the app is in. Right click on the "_database" folder and give that folder and all the child folders within it. Modify permissions for both the Anonymous webserver account and the ASPNET account. These accounts might not show up until you dig into the advanced tab and click find now to show all the accounts on the machine.
Permissions screen looks like this...

Once that is done go back the solution explorer window in visual studio.
Open the docs folder.. right click on "sysdiag.aspx" and choose view in browser.
It should complie the project again.. and then run that page in either the internal or external browser depending on how you have that set up.
That page will report back path information. "BTW.. for security reasons this page should be removed from any production server after installation is complete.. this is very important" In my case it looks like this.
Probabale AppRootPhysicalPath c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet
Probabale AppRootUrlPath http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet
Probabale Path to Access Database c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb
Now we need to edit the web.config file... your going to need to know some of the path information above.
In solution explorer double click on web.config.
Now edit the AppRootPhysicalPath, AppRootUrlPath, and CN keys accordingly.
In my case they will look like this.
<!-- PATHS USED BY THE SYSTEM --> <add key="AppRootPhysicalPath" value="c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet" /> <add key="AppRootUrlPath" value="http://localhost/aspprotectdotnet" />
<!-- MICROSOFT ACCESS KEY --> <add key="Cn" value="Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};Dbq= c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectdotnet\_database\aspprotectnet2 002.mdb;Uid=admin;Pwd=" />
Now.. because our web is really not in the root of our virtual directory which starts at "inetpub/wwwroot" we need to edit another tag in this file.
Find the forms tag near the bottom.
<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />
Change it to say this
<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectdotnet/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />
Notice tha part in bold that we added.
Now, you may also want to check the temp license key info while you are in that file and make sure it is not expired but I am not going to get into that here.
Now save and close that file and do a compile again.
In solution explorer open up the "aspprotectadmin" folder. Right click on default.aspx and click browse
You should see the login prompt in your web browser..
Log in with
admin temp
all lower case
You should see the users screen of the application,
Click on the system info tab up in the top left... make sure all those paths are correct and save it.
Go to the settings page of the admin area. Make sure all those paths/settings are correct and save it.
Congratulations... you just set up a visual studio web project from scratch and our now ready to edit and compile an advanced web application.
From here on your on your own, but feel free to ask questions in the forums as you will probably get help from myself or others who own the software.
One last thing... because we are not in the true root of the web on the development machine the examples in the example folder will need the reference to the "protectpage.ascx" file modified before they will work
It will need to go from
Src="/protectpage.ascx"
to
Src="/aspprotectdotnet/protectpage.ascx"
If this app was installed in the true root of a domain on a real webserver.. you would not have to edit the forms tag in the web config file or change the paths in the examples as they would be correct the way they came , Actually, as far the "aspprotectnet.dll" file goes it makes sense because of the following.
The "aspprotectlicense.dll" is something we do not provide the source code for. We also do not compile it in "debug" mode because you not want dll's running in "debug" mode in a production environment and we also do not want that dll in debug mode because of reverse engineering reasons.
Now, that being said that DLL is no different than any other 3rd party dll "so to speak" that you would use in a project. Many of which will not be in debug mode and you will also not have the source for.
"Microsoft.Data.Odbc.dll" being an example
Regardless, there must be a way to do what your trying to do. I am just not sure at the moment. It is nothing anyone has brought up before and I personally have never had any issues like that when I work on the application so I am just not sure.
It probably has something to do with the way you set up your project., It appears there is an auto logout after inactivity for a period of time. How does one change the default time allowed for inactivity?
thx , Does emailing work under the simplest scenario ? (directly from the users screen)
Thats the way to test it..
All that error means is whatever reason the settings you have chosen are not working. It could be the server. It could be what you chosen. (and yes I realize your pop info from outlook should probably work with the settings you chose)
Whenever I do installs I often have to try 3-5 different emailing scenarios before I come across one that works.
Each time making some changes and sending out test emails from the users screen until I get somewhere. Often time getting a working example of how your Hosting Company wants you to send email from ASP is the info to get your hands on. (what method and settings)
In this case they may have blocked the usee of a remote server and want you to use some other settings for sending email from asp. A lot of times they put that info in their help system.
If I were you I would start by trying the other two CDOSYS options for starters, and then try the remote server option again but using "localhost" as the server, if none of those work consult your host for example code and settings to send email from asp. If you still have no luck I can help for sure.
Realize too when testing the emails may take a bit to arrive. A delay of sorts. Best to type in a quick note about which method you are trying in the email text. That way when you finally get one delivered you'll know which method worked. , ok, here's a test page: http://www.galvinelectricity.org/download_link.asp
user: test password: test
Our company just got new computers, so everyone here has the same set-up, all Dells, all about 3 weeks old, all Windows XP.
But I did realize after reading your post that I am using Firefox and everyone else was using IE. When I used IE, I was able to duplicate the error.
But, alas, I am unable to resolve it. Client will be using IE, no doubt.
, How to set a new users expiration date.
You'll need to edit the "users/add_new_account.asp" with a text editor.
Find this section..
<% CmdAddUser.Fields("ValidateEmailCode") = ValidateEmailCode CmdAddUser.Fields("Access_Level") = "" ' PUT YOUR CODE HERE CmdAdduser.Update ID = CmdAdduser("ID") CmdAdduser.Close Set CmdAdduser = Nothing ConnPasswords.Close Set ConnPasswords = Nothing %>
You'll want to add code like this right between the Acccess_Level and Updates section
CmdAddUser.Fields("Expiration_Date") = Date + 60
That will give take todays date and add 60 days to it. You can of course do whatever you want here.
Actually, any database value for the user can be set during registration.
You can also change the default Access_Level to whatever you like. cwilliams38403.6828587963, you dont want to use the virtual smtp virtual server method... you want to use a real remote email server with valid MX records..
ultimately though after all that is going is it is out of the hands of the asp code and it becomes issues other then the code sending the email... regarding to whether or not emails get blocked by certain organizations
For example: I have many aol users sign up for various systems I have running without issue. I use CDOSYS with my own server mail.cjwsoft.com which has proper MX records set up.
I would also try to determine the difference between blocking and spam/junk email filtering. It is impoirtant to truly know what is going on. Sometimes adding more information to the body of the emails going out will eliminate the junk mail filters from gettings the emails.
Then you have the various open relay lists that places like AOL use. If your email server or IP sending the email is on those lists for spamming you do not stand a chance. That is all out of the hands of the ASP code.
, Chris,
Another question on V7. I set up all the paths as required for the extras like user pics and exports on my site. They were working fine. I created an export, then as you recommend, deleted the file on the site to ensure it doesn't get in the wrong hands. I did this a few times to test it after a number of people logged in.
About 2 days later, I went to do it again and the system came back with an error saying the directory didn't exist. I know it did because I created it and it worked fine. I then created the directory again thinking I was losing it.
Then today, I went to do another export and the directory is gone again! Can you help me understand why this might be happening? I am the only one with FTP access to the site so there is no way that it could be someone else doing it. The error I get is:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a004c'
Path not found
/password_admin/export.asp, line 78
Thanks, Dave , I have set up a user to be redirected to a different page when logging in for the first time.
I assumed this function would count the number of times a user has logged in. When the login count was greater than 1, the user would be taken to the default.asp
This isn't happening. The user is always redirected. The user login count in the database is now 9.
What am I missing?
, Yes, you are right.
We have now tested it using the DSN less connection with Access 2002 and it works fine. We have also tested it again with a DSN using 2002 and this also seems to work.
The comment about speed is a consideration although I have not noticed any differences. ( we only have a few database entries at this time).
Thanks for your help , I assume so you can clean up users that register, but then never pay ?, not anything built into the app... it would be done with client side javascript if you wanted to look into it... my client side javascript skills are ziltch, The redirection at 1st login feature is supposed to work like I explain in this thread.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo385-1.htm
Though what you just said is a bit confusing it sounds like you have some sort of browser problem and it is doing the redirect every single time. ?
I would suggest reseting all your browser settings to normal and making sure cookies are enabled because forms based authentication uses session variables and cookies must be enabled for session variables to work correctly. If not something like this could happen as the redirection at 1st login would happen over and over every time.
So try it on other computers and try with firefox as well as IE. Many people go nuts with their browser settings and way too much stuff blocked which can cuse all sorts of issues. Also some script blocking and firewall software can cause problems so disable all of that when testing.
You may also have created some sort of endless loop. (I really need to know way more information on what you did to know that for sure)
You may also want to consider doing your redirects manually meaning you protect a a page and right after the protection you use regular ASP redirect statements to redirect the user whevever you like based on their session info which is available to easily check immediatly after someone gets through the authentication.
I still stand behind my statements that redirection is not good site design. You really really need to understand and plan your ASP pages as well as have a very good understanding of the session and how all of that works if you use redirection with a password authentication scenario. You should never be redirecting someone to an ".htm" pages except during testing because you wont be able to stop users who are not supposed to go there from going there directly. , Hello,
I really need more infomation..
for starters
what is the server ? iis4,5, or 6 ?
what is the version of aspbanner.. aspbanner standard or aspbanner unlimited ?
what was the error message before you removed the "on error resume next"
was the sql database created using the sql creation scripts we provide as that is VERY important.
and lastly what are the the regional settings of the server ? what is the date format ? , Hi, I am wondering if I can redirect users with "GROUPACCESS"
just like access levelS. I tried to redirect using both "Groups"
and "GROUPACCESS" example below:
<%
If Session("GROUPACCESS") = "1" Then
Response.Redirect("group1.asp")
Else
Response.Redirect("allothers.asp")
End If
%>
I could only get the Access_Level to actually redirect. Is
this something the option pack supports? If so, any words of
advice?
, My guess it they are runnign some sort of ad blocking software like norton ad blocking. Something on the client side blocking ads or anything with the word ad in it.
I would investigate that., Nobody ever asked me, so i guess npegley sorted it.
The solution is indeed a single line added to your button form code ..
eg :
<input type='hidden' name='return' value='http://www.your-return-url/here.asp'>
This will overwrite any settings you have in your paypal preferences.
I posted this reply for anyone stumbling on here with the same problem. Hope it helps. :)
Dave. , More info on the groups session variable.
Session("Groups") will contain the ID numbers of whatever groups the user is a part of. It does not store the descriptive name of that group. It will show the same data that is actually stored in the "Groups" field in the database.
for example it might hold a value like this
*2*,*5*,*9*
meaning a user is part of groups 2, 5, and 9
so if you wanted to check to see if a user was part of a particular group you would do something like this
<% If InStr(Session("Groups"),"*9*") Then Response.Write("You are a member of group 9") End If %>
Taking this even further, if you really wanted to get a particular group's name or description you would have to query the database like so. In this case we ask it the name and description for group 9.
Group_ID=9 Set ConnPasswords = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") ConnPasswords.Open ConnectionString Set cmdTemp = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Command") Set CmdEditGroup = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset") cmdTemp.CommandText = "SELECT " & tbl_label_groups & ".* FROM " & tbl_label_groups & " WHERE (Group_ID = " & Group_ID & ")" cmdTemp.CommandType = 1 Set cmdTemp.ActiveConnection = ConnPasswords CmdEditGroup.Open cmdTemp, , 0, 1 Group_Name = CmdEditGroup("Group_Name") Group_Desc = CmdEditGroup("Group_Desc")
, I have run into the same problem with streaming pdfs to the browser
using the stream_download.asp example, but only when selecting the
option to open the file directly into the browser (after it's streamed
back) as opposed to saving it and then opening it (which works fine in
Firefox and IE). Then I ran across this Microsoft support article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q2 97822
It got me thinking that maybe a header needs to be included in
stream_download.asp that tells the browser to specifically cache the
file. Adding this suddenly got everything working
Response.CacheControl = "Public"
right after this line in the code
Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"
My asp is limited, but this seems to work at least for pdf
documents. Can someone confirm this? The other question I
have is if this is a solution, should the CacheControl be set to public
or private. Not sure on what the implications are.
Firefox by the way seems to open or save and open the file without
this, so you are right that the implementation between the browsers is
certainly different.
Tom
, Glad it worked cwilliams38406.5549074074, Hello,
I need some help with the following code. Please look at the area in red. I need to be able to set someting up to where the variable eval1 (a yes/no field in my database) is set to false after the associated link is pressed.

, I recently upgraded my ASPclassifieds from MS Access to SQL. The application launches, I can browse existing catagories, etc. but when I try clicking on the login, guestbook, register or accessing the classifieds_admin, I get the HTTP 500 - Internal server error. Guessing this must be a folder or file permission issue? Have tried changing IUSR permissions but nothing helps.
Please advise. Thanks, lancem , I dont know about your error on line 6 when uploading..
as far as the manaully edited import file not working I would really need to see it. There has to be somethin wrong with it's format.
I really need more information and possibly acess to the system to do some troubleshooting...
This is anot a feature anyone has ever had an issue like this with. , Okay, hopefully I'm posting in the correct area this time.
Currently we are utilizing ASPProtect 7.x
When using the Newsletter function, many members are indicating they are not receiving email. No evidence of email in SPAM folders. Also, when checking with email provider, they insist it is not being filtered prior to delivery to member's email address.
The following message does appear when a newsletter is sent.
error '8004020f'
/newsite/ASPprotect/scripts/emailing_subs_inc.asp, line 124
Line 124 is the line of code to 'send' the emails. We have approx. 860 members who are on the list to receive the newsletter emails. I have no way of knowing how many are not getting the email. Based on anecdotal evidence, I'm guessing it could be as high as 20%.
We are using CDOSYS / SMTP authentication with a real external email with MX records. Our website is hosted by Cbeyond. They insist it isn't at their end. (for what it's worth)
Thanks for your assistance.
NPA , Look in the "check_user_inc.asp" file..
You'll see the name of the cookie there and also get an idea how to access it.
In most versions it looks like this.
Request.Cookies("PASWORDSYSTEMCOOKIE")("COOKIE_USERNAME")
You'll want the cookie for the username because the session variable will not exist unless they have actually gone to a protected page during that session at the site.
It would probably be best the check for both the session and the cookie. That will make sure people logged in that arent using the cookie option still see the message you want to display.
Sorta like this..
GetUsername = "" If Request.Cookies("PASWORDSYSTEMCOOKIE")("COOKIE_USERNAME") <> "" Then GetUsername = Request.Cookies("PASWORDSYSTEMCOOKIE")("COOKIE_USERNAME") Else If Session("Username") <> "" Then GetUsername = Session("Username") End If
Response.Write GetUsername cwilliams38298.9175, You would carefully use the built in features of access to import/export data.
The password for our databases is noted in the documentation. It's pretty hard to miss really. You can also see the database password by looking at the connection string info.
different versions may be different but it is usually "temp" minus the quotes , Can I suggest you have changed a code to stop this or you have a privacy software stopping your visits to add 1 to the counter. Has anyone tried to visit the album or just you. If you send me the link I can sus it out for you, that is good news... good guess on my part I guess
anyway, try this for your latest issue.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=340&KW =%2D1, like I mentioned are you by chance running something like Norton Antivirus Script Blocking ?? That can cause timeouts and all sorts of problems with ASP as can other software like it. , I wonder why the banners in ASPBanner 8.1 are moving from one place to another when opening my site www.helserevyen.no in a Mac Safari browser and click on refresh?
Can you take a look at my site and response? , I really need more detailed information to say anything about it.
I would try different methods of calling banners as well to see if that helps., Yes, that worked... , Where is the system getting the random user name and password, and why does it keep selecting the same user name and password every time?
, I think I've got it to work somewhat. I modified the 2checkout1 & 2 asp file to use and pass Product_id. It now identifies the product correctly. I'm good fo now. Thanks for the info though.
-Jason , I am not sure. I can tell you that I run windows 2003 server and I have never had any issues setting permissions for ASP.NET files and folders. This very server is 2003 and the ASPProtect.NET demo runs on this server as well.
Course, I can't say that I have specifically tried to remove ASP.NET READ permissions on the database folder as it's just not something I would not have a reason to do. Why are you trying to do that? The ASP.NET account needs that permission. If you are trying to stop file browsing and downloading in that folder that is not how you do that. The best way to do that is by keeping the database somewhere else on the server that is not part of the http web. ,
