I have tried everything to get your CJWSoft code working..I purchased the auto listings software and I am stumped, and actually you stumped my hosting provider, my database is stored in the database directory on the root.
I have even tried your ASPtest and still cannot connect. My have connected other databases without an issue on this same host, I have named a DNS Auto for my database and ponted to that in my code but get the following error you see at http://www.burkesauto.com and even when i try you test script found here at http://www.burkesauto.com/asptest.asp . cwilliams38145.8522800926, One is for paypal subscriptions (recurring billing) and the other is for single payments

You can delete any of the 3rd party payment directories you are not using including the the 2checkout one... (all those folders really are is a copy of the users folder specially modified to handle a certain payment processor)
Just Don't delete the "users" folder though as there are things you do there that you can not do anywhere else.. quite a few things.. editing existing account info, looking up passwords... etc etc

Its a great idea. I didnt really check the counter until the album started working. Its a great concept though.,
It worked after bout 15 minutes. I receive a response of *3*
However, when I log in as a user who is only a mamber of group1 I still get a response of *3* , If you bought ASPBanner Unlimited Version 7.3 Before August/01/2004 this file needs to be updated.
It fixes a bug where CODE type banners do not work correctly with a weight higher than 1.
Basically, blank banners will rotate and you will see nothing sometimes.
Copy this file into your ASPBanner folder over the existing file of the same name.

, This post unfortutely needs to be here because this application has been the biggest pain in the neck for me you could possibly imagine. This is not because of problems with the application, but because of people's general lack of knowlegde regarding ASP.NET. This post totally voices my stance on what sort of knowledge you need to have and also the fact that I am not going to support anything but general installation on a correctly and professionaly set up live server.
ASPProtect.NET is a great application but using ASP.NET requires a lot more basic knowledge than using classic ASP and there are a lot of basic low level ASP.NET things that need to be set up correctly for an application like ASPProtect.NET to run. These are things I do not cover because you should know the ASP.NET basics when using an application as complex as this. It's just that I don't have time to nor should I have to teach people the basics of ASP.NET. I don't charge nearly enough for ASPProtect.NET to offer that kind of support.
So, I will say it one more time. ASPProtect.NET is targeted towards experienced Visual Studio.NET developers that know how to work with Code Behind VB.NET and are familiar with basic ASP concepts such as IIS application settings, the .NET framework, the aspnet_client folder, and the basics of the web.config file. If you are using ASP.NET for whatever reason you need to know about these things. The best way is to get some good books and do set up ASP.NET on a local development machine so you can start learning.
If you are one of the ASP.NET challenged let me say this as well.
Stick with Classic ASP. ASP.NET is a step in the wrong direction for the average user which I like to refer to as "Joe Coder". Classic ASP is very powerful and easy to pick up. ASP.NET is not easy to pick up and never will be for a lot of people. In my opinion it’s actually the wrong technology to use for anyone other than big corporations who need extreme scalability in their applications or for the hobbyist or object oriented programmer who just wants to use the latest and greatest. Ask yourself if you really want to deal with compiling Code Behind code each time you make changes to your web site as opposed to just editing some files in notepad real quick like you can do with classic ASP ? Do you have the money to purchase and use Visual Studio.NET or are you going to struggle with compiling all your ASP.NET pages using a command line compiler and a batch file ? Yes, you can build ASP.NET code that isn't code behind but why even bother if that is the case because your missing the point of ASP.NET if you do that and missing out on a lot of powerful new features and concepts.
When I do custom projects for bigger clients I usually end up using ASP.NET because they want to go that way and understand the time and money involved. When I do any of my own projects I use Classic ASP because the truth is you can still make some rockin busy scalable web sites with Classic ASP just like you can still make great web sites with CGI, PP, Cold Fusion.. etc etc. Look around the web because a lot of the biggest sites out there still use those scripting technologies and their stuff runs very well. ASP.NET is a lot of hype and although some things about it are plain awesome it is an environment best suited for real object oriented programmers, not the weekend code warriors.
The other thing to keep in mind about classic ASP is the shear abundance of applications and scripts available for it. ASP.NET can be expensive for that reason alone as there still is a shortage of good time tested applications out there and what is out there is always priced a lot higher.
In addition to that half of the ASP.NET applications out there are just half baked poorly converted versions of their Classic ASP counterparts. Is that the kind of thing you want to sink twice the money into or would you rather have something that runs well and has been tweaked year after year into a rock solid product?
To make things worse a lot of the hosting companies out there offering ASP.NET hosting are severely limiting the basic abilities of ASP.NET because of various security concerns. This means if you go with a Host that does that 75% of the asp.net stuff out there won't run on the hosted server. Isn't that wonderful ?
Now, Let's make things even worse. So far every time Microsoft has released a new version of ASP.NET a lot of things from the previous version have stopped working and needed to be modified to work correctly. Is that really something you will have the time, resources, and energy to deal with.
You may ask "but is classic ASP going to be around 5 years from now?" Though you never really know until the new version of windows server ships I say "Hell Yes" it will be. According to my sources at Port80 Software who work very closely with the folks at Microsoft (as well as many other sources out there) it will almost certainly be in Longhorn which is the next version of Windows Server. Longhorn probably won't come out until 2007 and will be popular for 3-4 years after that. The version of windows server after that will most likely support Classic ASP as well and if it doesn't I am sure there will be a way to make ASP run on it. If you really look around a lot of hosting companies are still running Windows Server 2000 which is 5 years old at the moment. The bottom line is Classic ASP helped put Microsoft web technologies on the map. Microsoft can not simply drop it because if they do they give up a dominate market share to the scripting competition being PHP, CGI, Cold Fusion.. etc etc PHP for instance a huge installed base on many platforms which are essentially free. ASP.NET can not compete with that in any way and not supporting Classic ASP would put microsoft in a bad position.
Take it from me. If you are a weekend code warrior/script kiddie. You'll be a lot happier sticking with classic ASP. You will also have save a lot of money and you can still have great web sites. There are tons of great applications out there in ASP and ASP still is and always will be the easiest scripting language to work with and learn. Better yet look around on sites like www.4guysfromrolla.com and see if you actually understand any of the latest articles. If it looks like Greek to you that is yet another sign that you should stick to classic ASP.
Personally, I will be focusing just as much time and effort on ASP.NET as I will on Classic ASP in the years to come for a few reasons.
- Because I sell software I obviously need to convert/re-write most of my appIications to work with ASP.NET. My living may eventually depend on it.
- Because I love using the latest technologies I want to continue to develop using ASP.NET.
- Because I do many custom projects for various clients using ASP.NET is a must.
- Because in some cases using ASP.NET over classic ASP makes total sense.
Just don't fall for the HYPE folks. I am one of the few established developers out there that has a set of Balls and is willing to put the truth out there and see past the bullsh*t. If you go ASP.NET do it because you seriosuly think you need the power and scalabilty and money and time is not an issue or because you are a hobbiest and object oriented programmer who likes working with and has time to work with the latest and greatest web scripting technolgies out there. I truly believe that so far ASP.NET is as much a success as it is a failure. I am sure some of you out there know what I mean by that.
All this being said you should also realize that ASPProtect.NET is a little different than your average ASP.NET application because it uses a lot of advanced ASP.NET techniques and you essentially use it to password protect your existing scripts meaning you need to integrate your stuff with our stuff in a sense. If you just go buy some random ASP.NET application like a classifieds system or storefront it is probably just going to run on it's own an therefore will be a lot easier to set up and deal with.

Thank you that did it !! , This user is talking about preparing more than 100 pics at a time for an album that already exists and doing it using linux.
I asked the user to post the code here because I think it is interesting and it may help someone who is working with the app.
This article is not for everyone for a few reasons.
1.) The application can already mass import pics on it's own. It does 100 pics pretty quickly on a decent server. The built in method also resizes pictures and make low res thumbnails should your server support a supported ASP image resizing component. The method above simply rename pictures in a folder so the application will see them as part of an album.
2.) We don't support or recommend that anyone sets the application to use more than 100 pics per album. It is just not tuned for that and there will be issues. Please dont ask me what they are as it is complicated and I am not sure/dont remember what they all are.

If you are using ASPProtect Version 7 it is possible because version 7 supports html emailing. In any other version it would require some custom coding to add html email support. You would have to sort it out by experimenting and editing the emailing code. All the email methods have documentation on the web in some form or another showing how to send html emails.
Also,
sometimes depending on the email component being used and the email client reading the email a link in a text based email will get hyperlinked automatically. For example outlook usually will do that, but it doesn't always in other situations.
Lastly, we have special upgrade pricing should anyone want to upgrade to ASPProtect Version 7. It really has a ton of great features.

I am having a hard time getting my hosting company to modify the rights on the data folder. They state they support ASP and access databases however this is the response I got when I requested the modify permissions set for the internet guest account:
Were the rights changed on the data folder? No, we do not manage rights to folders.
My question to you is: Doesn't supporting asp require those permissions be set on the database folder or can asp (not just aspprotect) work without those rights modified?

, Just installed sofware everything works fine except I see no way to upload any photos. There is no reference or link to allow an upload on any of the asp pages (I have surfed them all). I am sure it is something simple, but I am not aware. I have never done anything like that and that is why I told you what I knew and suggested you try it with the free version... , if you are talking about IPN subscriptions and how they work paypal has detailed manauls on their site.. if you are talking about asp.net in general there are probably a lot of good books..
the reason I said look at the aspprotect 7 code is cause the applications and database are very similar and the same techniques will apply for the most part as far as how the ipn subscription posts from paypal talk to the database and what happens during the various post events.. etc etc etc , Understood.... can you point me to a place where there are other methods of calling banners? Do you mean not use Flash? I am new to this and will need some pushing over the cliff!

Dave , ya, thats basically what I was gonna do..
BTW.. if that other app is going crazy with an access database it could be the cause of all the slowdown with ASPProtect... what happens there is it is using so much database driver time that it robs other things that also access a database... so basically ASPProtect isn't asking its database for much but your other application and database are cripping that part of the system and causing it to run like crapola
If your other app is using a system dsn try changing it to use a dsn-less connection... it might actually help , If you are developing using Windows XP Pro and running the NTFS file system setting proper permissions on a folder in your website requires that you 1st disable simple file sharing.
To do so open up "my computer". At the top open up "tools/folder options"
Then the "view" tab.
Then at the bottom uncheck "use simple file sharing"
After that that is done... using "my computer" browse to the folder in your web that you need to set permissions on.
Right click on that folder and then choose the "security" tab.
(If simple file sharing is on that tab wont be there)
Give the "Internet Guest Account" Modify Permissions
This will check all the boxes under modify as well.
You can also give permissions to the everyone account and accomplish the same thing.
BTW:
If you are using ASP.NET you need to give permissions to an account called ASPNET. It wont show up in the user list. You'll need to click "add" and then type in "ASPNET"

Humm, how did ASPBanner 8 come with your purchase of ASPProtect ? That is not something I am aware of or something I do. Please provide more information on how you obtained ASPBanner 8. If I gave yu a copy for some reason please refresh my memory so I can go look up th emails about it. I need to know you have a valid license.
Now, as for the two not working together and the login screens messing with each other. I am even more confused. Tell me more as I just do not understand what you did ? ASPBanner has it's own user database and login system so there is no reason you should be mixing the two together as far as logins go. The two applications can certainly be in the same web together and not bother each other. ASPBanner can certainly serve banners to any pages you protect with ASPProtect or don't protect, but you certainly should not be protecting any ASPBanner code with ASPProtect code. ASPBanner already has code in it to do that. If that is the case don't do that. ASPProtect is not meant to protect code that already has a login system. That should just be obvious as far as I am concerned and hopefully you dintn't try to do that.
(you said you just put the directory in there but there must be more too this than that)

I just dont see how your ASPProtect pages could be effected by ASPBanner unless you really did something wacky like included the ASPBanner "check_user_inc.asp" instead of the one that comes with ASPProtect or overwrote it... etc ect
If in the same web aspprotect can be wherever and aspbanner needs to be in a folder called "aspbanner". There should be no conflicts under normal use and the two will essentially run seperate of one another. , Please be aware folks..
This file is not provided by CJWSoft. Though this may work very well use of it is not supported in any way. We have not tested it.
This user is not using the option pack so this file will not be compatible with anyone using that because it does not have support for groups and some of the other new features.

The only other real question I have (and cant find in the docs) is how to remove the self registration option all togehter. My client wants to add its users manually, and not give the option for them to sign up themselves. Do I just find any remove any code that references it? , ok.. the count your talking about wont increment until someone other than you views the page.
After that you can increment it one time...
It keeps track of the last IP that hit it.. if it is the same it doesn't increment
This is all by design... so the same person doesn't increment the count over and over..
It's simplitist and it can be tricked... but it does what it needs to do

What is the difference between the paypal_sub_signup and the paypal_signup directories? Also, I know it depends, but what directories and files can I delete from my web server if I am not using them? I copied the entire set of files that came with the program over to the webserver and I am concerned that there is too much out there.

best regards , Just as an FYI, I found the problem. FP2003 has an "Optimize" feature that removes so called not needed spaces and comments from the pages. It also completely screws up .ASP code.
I turned off the optimization feature and all the pages I was having problems with worked. However, I would still recommend not using it too! , 1st off.. you appear to have some strange things going on with that domain. Looks like you have a frameset and are loading another domain in it which is always confuding especially if you are running the site off your home computer or something... I am not sure

Here is what I believe is happening.
When you register you get sent a validation email that has a link in it that looks something like this.

That link can only be clicked on once which will activate your account.
If you somehow run that link more than once you will get a message telling you there was an error.
I think some people are double clicking on the link they get sent and running it more than once.... or clicking on it again after registration is complete. It probably happens very fast so they never see the success screen.
Either way, if you can login to the forum nothing is wrong and you are already activated. cwilliams38089.6248842593, Having a quality professionally set up ASP.NET server that is going to support your needs is CRITICAL whether it is yours or someone elses. Them saying they will not set permissions is useless. Quite honestly Network Solutions is a joke when it comes to ASP.NET hosting. They are all about CHEAP MASS HOSTING and that is not where you go when you plan on running complex ASP.NET applications. What good is ASP.NET hosting if you can not permissions set on folders you need it for? A lot of people run ASPProtect.NET and their hosts set permissions for them without issue. We made one folder that they could click on and set all permissions at once easily. If they truly knew anything they would understand that and set permissions for you in a heartbeart. You have to have a correctly set up server or a hosting company that is serious about your ASP hosting needs.
I mean you come to us with this mess of a situation, we tell you its a bad setup. We tell you to rebuild the server correctly or make a new one. Now instead of doing that you come to us with another mess of a situation. Now you act all frustrated because you have spent so much time on this. How the heck do you think we learned everything we know ? Do you think we have never spent weeks on a problem or stayed up for 4 nights in a row without sleep. That is how you learn and it is called experience. I have no sympathy for someone that complains about how long something took because I am right there with the best of them and I have paid my dues.

Granted you may not be "Joe Coder" but you are definetly "that guy" who doesn't really know what is going on with ASP.NET. "that guy" who sets up his own server and knows enough to be dangerous. You definetly have enough sense/basic skills to dig around and read articles and try things but when you are on the wrong track that only helps out so much.
Also: I really was pretty tired when I got home last night, but now that I really think about what you did with that webserver/domain controller is about the worst moves possible when it comes to IIS hosting setups.. That is just SO BAD !! Now, don't think that I haven't done some REAL stupid things in the past. John too, like the time 5 or so years back when thought he could make a Windows XP Pro webserver for serious non development use . Anyway, that is how you learn. I suggest you get your server running correctly (not a domain controller) or you get a real host like www.alentus.com for your asp hosting needs. I mean you can get an account for like 10.00 a month and end all these headaches right now. I even know one of the head techs there as well as the general manager. Their ASP and ASP.NET support is 2nd to none.
You may not like what I have to say, (hell, I can pretty much guarantee you won't) but I tell it like it is and in the long run you will be better off for it.. We spent a ton of time developing the .NET version of this product and we sell it way less than it is worth especially since we provide source code. It is an awesome product, but if the server isn't truly and correctly supporting ASP.NET or they host will not set permissions than it is out of our hands. As far as I am concerned anything else is a waste of everyone's time. I am not going to play that game. Quite frankly, you need to get your stuff together. Nothing you have come up with so far has anything to do with a bug with ASPProtect.NET. Everything has been server related.
