Upgrade from V6 to v7.x with an MSACCESS DATABASE
1st of all, backup your existing ASPProtect files and database before performing this upgrade. Please be really careful while performing this upgrade. Version 7.x is a highly advanced application compared to any previous versions. CJWSoft under no circumstances is responsible if you lose information or have website downtime.
BOTTOM LINE: (PERFORM THIS UPGRADE AT YOUR OWN RISK)
To do this upgrade you're going to need to have the Microsoft Access Application.
To work with an Access .mdb file it can not be newer than the version of Microsoft Access you are running.
That being said, on with the upgrade..
Open you're existing Acccess Database up in Microsoft Access..
You should see this something like this.
By right clicking on then choosing rename
Rename "Users" to "ASPP_Users"
Rename "Groups" to "ASPP_Groups"
If you do not have a "Groups" table do not worry about it right now.
Now right click and DELETE the Config Table.
Yes, delete it..
You should now see this. (with or without the "Groups" table)
Now, right click on "ASPP_Users" and go into design view.
It should look like this.
Rename the "Password" field to "Old_Password"
Be sure to spell it perfectly using the Underscore
It will look like this.
Now scroll down to the bottom a bit It should look like this.
Now..
If you have a "Groups" Field... leave it alone
If you do not have a "Groups" Field add one and make it a memo field.
Now, we are going to add a few more new fields.
Add a field called "Redirection_URL" make it a "text" field with 150 field size
Add a field called "PayPal_Subscriber_ID" make it a "text" field with 100 field size
Add a field called "Newsletter" and make it a yes/no field
Add a field called "Password" and make it a "text" field with 100 field size
It should now look like this.
(you do not need to worry about the field descriptions.. that part is optional and only seen when working on the database)
Now close that window and save the changes..
Your now going to open up another Access Database while still leaving the one you have on your screen open. You going to open up one of the new databases that came with v7.x. This database has some info we are simply going to copy and paste.
You'll want to open it and put it side by side on your desktop like so.
(the old database is on the left.. the new one is on the right)
Now, for the fun part.
On the new database to the right.. right click on the "ASPP_Config" table and pick "Copy"
Then move your mouse over to the old database on the left. Right click in the open white area and click "paste"
It will ask you for a database name. Type in "ASPP_Config"
Leave "Structure and Data" checked and hit OK
Your old database on the left should now have a nice new "ASPP_Config" table.
OK, now for the "ASPP_Groups" table
If you already have a "ASPP_Groups" table in your old database you are done.
If you do not have one your going to copy and paste the table from the New Database to your old database just like we just did with the "ASPP_config" table.
Your old database should now look like this.
Now, you are done upgrading your database from within Microsoft Access.
The existing passwords still have to be encrytped and moved from the "Old_Password" to the "Password" field
To that we have a special page we run in the application that will take care of that.
So, for now... go install the application, but using the database we just created.
Follow these instructions for the most part...

When you get to the part where you finally get into the admin area and need to make an admin account you will notice that your existing user database is there but none of the users have passwords if you look at them in the edit screen.
That is normal. Simply do what the instructions say and create and admin account using a username that does not exist..
Then log off... then back in as that new admin account. If that works you are ready to convert the passwords.
This part is very easy.
You want to run a special page via the browser.

Replacing the part in blue with your website info.
Once you get the page running you will see a login prompt and one form field just like before with the "get_me_in.asp" page
You will need to paste the "PasswordEncryptionKey" value that you used in the "config_inc.asp" file in the form field and hit enter.
If all goes well you will see a page telling you to click here to encrypt the passwords and copy them over.
So do what it says... dont click more than once and wait.
Eventually it should say it is finished. So go log in to the admin area of the system using the new admin account.
Now edit some users but dont save... you want to see if the passwords are showing up. If they are the conversion worked. If you see nothing or a garbled mess it did not work and you made a mistake during this whole process.
If things went well backup and delete the conversion file below.

You do not need it anymore.
Once you are positive every thing is running smoothly and everyone's passwords are ok you can go in and delete the "Old_Password" field as well.
If things didnt go well.. try again from scratch and go slowly.
If they still dont go well get ahold of us for help.
We are here to help, but if you really want us to we can be hired to do the conversion. , With ASPVendor you must use the SQL scripts we provide with the SQL Version to create the SQL database or else fields will not get set correctly.
I wish you would have told me you were using SQL server. It's important details like that that allow me to help and troubleshoot. ,
Our login works great, variables even help determine menu options. When user logs on, however, it opens in a new page. Is there a setting somewhere that sets whether you can open in a new or existing page?
Also, when you log off , Having a quality professionally set up ASP.NET server that is going to support your needs is CRITICAL whether it is yours or someone elses. Them saying they will not set permissions is useless. Quite honestly Network Solutions is a joke when it comes to ASP.NET hosting. They are all about CHEAP MASS HOSTING and that is not where you go when you plan on running complex ASP.NET applications. What good is ASP.NET hosting if you can not permissions set on folders you need it for? A lot of people run ASPProtect.NET and their hosts set permissions for them without issue. We made one folder that they could click on and set all permissions at once easily. If they truly knew anything they would understand that and set permissions for you in a heartbeart. You have to have a correctly set up server or a hosting company that is serious about your ASP hosting needs.
I mean you come to us with this mess of a situation, we tell you its a bad setup. We tell you to rebuild the server correctly or make a new one. Now instead of doing that you come to us with another mess of a situation. Now you act all frustrated because you have spent so much time on this. How the heck do you think we learned everything we know ? Do you think we have never spent weeks on a problem or stayed up for 4 nights in a row without sleep. That is how you learn and it is called experience. I have no sympathy for someone that complains about how long something took because I am right there with the best of them and I have paid my dues.

Granted you may not be "Joe Coder" but you are definetly "that guy" who doesn't really know what is going on with ASP.NET. "that guy" who sets up his own server and knows enough to be dangerous. You definetly have enough sense/basic skills to dig around and read articles and try things but when you are on the wrong track that only helps out so much.
Also: I really was pretty tired when I got home last night, but now that I really think about what you did with that webserver/domain controller is about the worst moves possible when it comes to IIS hosting setups.. That is just SO BAD !! Now, don't think that I haven't done some REAL stupid things in the past. John too, like the time 5 or so years back when thought he could make a Windows XP Pro webserver for serious non development use . Anyway, that is how you learn. I suggest you get your server running correctly (not a domain controller) or you get a real host like www.alentus.com for your asp hosting needs. I mean you can get an account for like 10.00 a month and end all these headaches right now. I even know one of the head techs there as well as the general manager. Their ASP and ASP.NET support is 2nd to none.
You may not like what I have to say, (hell, I can pretty much guarantee you won't) but I tell it like it is and in the long run you will be better off for it.. We spent a ton of time developing the .NET version of this product and we sell it way less than it is worth especially since we provide source code. It is an awesome product, but if the server isn't truly and correctly supporting ASP.NET or they host will not set permissions than it is out of our hands. As far as I am concerned anything else is a waste of everyone's time. I am not going to play that game. Quite frankly, you need to get your stuff together. Nothing you have come up with so far has anything to do with a bug with ASPProtect.NET. Everything has been server related.

Did you test things before you started modifying the code ?
If its SQL server it is very important that the database was created with the provided SQL scripts., At the bottom of my "users" list page, it asks the question "number of users displayed per page"? After hitting a larger number than the default of 1-25, it increases the number of users per page to that number. But as soon as I leave that page, it goes back to the default. Any thoughts?, question 2 is answered best here

If your application can post to the page and provide all the form variables needed to log in it may work out for you..
You'll have to try it out... all the form variables needed are in that login form example.
Basically you'd be posting to a protected (.asp) page..
and providing the following for the most part.. how your app creates it post data is on your end...

As an alternate scenario...
Now, by default the "check_user_inc.asp" file is looking for posted form data... for security reasons it is not looking for querystring info..
If you change this bit of code in that file

to
Username = Replace(Request("Username"),"'","''")
Password = Request("Password")
It will then grab either form or querystring data...
Meaning you wouldn't necessary have to create a true post to the page with form data. You could just access the page via a querysting like so

Of course that introduces security risks as the username and password would be passed in plain text over the net
Another option is...
You can also make a copy of the "check_user_inc.asp" page called whatever with those modifications just to use in pages you need your little application to post to... thus reducing the security concerns a a bit as the rest of yoru site could still have its pages protected under the normal scenario.
I hope this answers your question... I havent really ever tried any of this but that is how I think it would work... , I will actually explain how to set access_levels and/or groups...

you can change the level or remove that line all together if you dont want one set
now for groups you would add this line in the same area

Groups access for a user is stored in one field in the database like you see above. If you are confused what you should be saving in that field I suggest simply setting a user to whatever groups you want via the admin area and then looking in the database to see what got saved in that field. It's pretty simple really how they are stored.

(needs to be viewed on a windows based machine that can read it) If you are using XP with Service Pack 2 follow the instructions below or you will not be able to view the help file.

You should save this file and then open it.
Just opening it from download may not work and you will not be able to read it correctly.

IMPORTANT
If your are using xp with service pack 2 there are some new security features that can block the access of help files you download. So as far as the ".chm" file goes.. you have to download it... right click on it...go to properties... then choose unblock down in the lower right corner ...then you can open and view the file correctly ,

however using another account could cause permissions issues.."yes, even sa" basically the username your using needs datareader and datawriter permissions to all tables used by the photo gallery system and you probably have to go specifically set them usin ght e security tab for your database in enterprise manager. it would be nice if there was an option for login abuse, where a login account would be flagged if it logged in from x number of different IPs over a period of time. I know many have dynamic IPs, but there's got to be a balance between legitimate logins and logins that are 'shared' for the sake of saving money (I sell subscriptions), in the end costing me.
Maybe searching the first two number groups in the IP (example, 209.168.*.*), and if finding more than an admin specified number of logins per week from IPs with different first two groups, the record would be flagged or locked...

For this to work, the search engine must pass the PW to the web site. I just was not sure how to do the same thing with IPs. I will play with the code and see what happens. If it works, I will post it here to help others, if this is OK with forum rules.

You can delete any of the 3rd party payment directories you are not using including the the 2checkout one... (all those folders really are is a copy of the users folder specially modified to handle a certain payment processor)
Just Don't delete the "users" folder though as there are things you do there that you can not do anywhere else.. quite a few things.. editing existing account info, looking up passwords... etc etc

It may be best that I stick with html then. You mention that is stresses the Version 7 software, would the unlimited version perform any differently if I use multiple zones?
Also, if I do go with a single zone, would either program be able to make sure each banner is unique, or would there by duplicates for each page view?

If banners were working fine and now they are just not showing up.
1st check to see that you are calling a valid zone with live banners in it.
If you are then most likely this it what hapened.
The web server must have crashed or lost power and now the application variables are in limbo/not working.
I have seen this happen a few times.
Basically the application variable system gets messed up because it was not shut down properly.
The way to cure it is as follows.
Edit and save a banner in the system. Hopefully that gets things going again.
If this happens a lot it is a server issue, not ASPBanner's fault. cwilliams38415.0978935185, 1st of all when I look at the site I see a lot of non US characters and I can see the regional settings of the site are foreign.
ASPClassifieds in only intended to run under US and Canadian regional settings as stated on the site.

It won't run right like that for a lot of reasons and it is not supported like that as that notice says.
The categories showing 0 is just one of the problems you will have.
If I help you fix this it will just lead to 4 more issues right after.
If you would like support with the classifieds application you need to run it on a server with US or Canadian regional settings like the site says. , I would like to have the ability to give a user 1 album with the default # of photos in it.

If you purchased ASPProtect Version 7.x before Nov 23 2005 then you can download these Update Files.
(These are non-critical updates.. only update if you want the described changes below)
These updates do the following..
- Make the Tabs in the Admin area move up and down as you navigate around so they look more like tabs used in a file cabinet.
- Updates the import/export process so the tab delimited text files created now store the passwords in plain text instead of encrypted. I have been thinking about this one for a while now and I think it is better this way as it was confusing a lot of people. If can also kill the whole process if by chance the encrypted output of a password contains a line break of sorts. There is no way to deal with that scenario so this is way the import/export process is going to work from now on. This also means you should be VERY carfeful about leaving export files lying around as they will have the passwords in them.
- Updates the "expected_paths.asp" in the data folder because the paths it was generating had an extra "data/" in it.
- Updates the users page so it will not show the import/export link if you have not entered a path for the export files in the settings.
- Adds an Activity Tab if using the Activity Tracking features instead of the links it used to put on the users page that most people didn't see.
To install these just copy them in over the old files.
Now of course back up your existing files so can revert back if there is a problem or you do not like the changes. If you made any custom changes to any of your pages use your head and realize that copying these in over your existing files will overide any custom changes you made. (that is your business, I am just warning you)

As for the log in not persiting. Did you by chance turn off cookies in your browser ? They are required for forms based authentication to function. Otherwise, yes you would need to log in to each and every page as you moved around. cwilliams38414.6054166667,
