Yea.. that error is totally because the asp pages are looking for fields in the database that are not there.. and causing a nasty loop.

if using the option pack you must go over the directions very carefully...
Make sure everything works step by step..

After upgrading to option pack code you either need to upgrade the database from the base system or use the newer database provided with the option pack.

Then.. you want to test every function of the groups.. if pages act slow and seem odd... especially the groups page and edit users page..
Then your not using a valid database. Either you didnt upgrade the old one, are not using the new one, or your connecting to an older verison by accident and not realizing it.

That's pretty much it...

cwilliams38300.5555671296,
Thanks, I figured that out!

I managed to get the gallery running, minimally, on the test server, so now on to the real thing.

Thank you!

I wasnt talking about the date for a banner ad.. I was talking about the date field in the database for a USER if there is one (I dont remember if that app had date fields for user or not and I am not at a computer to take a look)

If you do not know how to directly open up and edit the database then yes you should just make a new user,

I'll send you something..

, Those access levels are not used and are nothing to worry about. They are left over from the ASPProtect core which I used for the users area of ASPBanner.

I am not sure what you did but its not a none, Unless I know more I can not make any guesses what happened. I would make sure in the database that the user is active and the expiration date field for them if there is one is empty,

how about translating the error to english..

Looks to me off hand that it would have something to do with the SQL server itself not being run in an english lcid/format and causing some sort of date issue.

I would also suggest you start off with a brand new blank SQL ASPBanner database and make sure that works before you attemp t to import any data into it.

,

Hi,

First and foremost, a great product. I downloaded it last night and it took little effort to get it up and running

.....now a little question...

Has the software/code been tried out on a Mysql db and if so did it work?

The reason I ask is that my website is very busy (1.5million page views per month avg) and I'm considering converting the ASPBanner Access db to a Mysql one to help handle the traffic. For every page view one banner impression is being made which means that the Access db is under a bit of pressure

This afternoon there were 1012 simultanious users on the website and it froze with an error message displaying where the banner should have been (I didn't quite catch the message but something to do with the banner script timing out). I'm not sure if the Access db had something to do with it but it seemed too coincidental. Rebooting the server cured the problem but obviously kicked off the visistors as well
At present there's 668 online and no problems so I'll have to monitor it to see how it goes but if anyone can answer the Mysql question I'd be grateful

Thanks,

Dave

,

This may be an old question ??? If it is please point me to the post or documentation where I can find the answer please.

When creating protected pages I am using the following to protect them:

<%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>

<!--#INCLUDE FILE="/aspprotect/check_user_inc.asp"-->

But that is not working. I get the following error when I try to access the members logon page in the directory that I wish to add the pages to:

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0130'

Invalid File attribute

/filelocation/filename.asp, line 3

File attribute '/aspprotect/check_user_inc.asp' cannot start with forward slash or back slash.

However if I create the pages in the root of the AspProtect directory and use a link to the same page that exists in the AspProtect directory and the following include:

<%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>

<!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->

The pages work fine.

I really do not want to put all of my protected pages in the root of the AspProtect directory.

I would like to mix protected and unprotected pages throughout the site in order to #1 make it easier to administer. #2 keep the AspProtect directory solely for authentication. And, #3 keep any user authentication pages out of the AspProtect directory.

TIA

, YAY FOR ASPPROTECT 7!!!

Now I need to know... how can I automate PayPal subscriptions and purchases? I'd like it so that once PayPal gets its money, my accounts get marked active.

Now, the documentation on this site currently says, to point the IPN post action to a null page. Yet, I see an IPN.asp in my files for PayPal subs and PayPal purchases...  Looking over the code there, I see actions to make accounts active and stuff like that. Is the page ready for prime time, or should I hold off for a new version?
cwilliams38421.7014814815,

it is not uncommon for folder permissions to be lost or changed on a server.. a lot of things can cause it

if it was working and now you can not edit or write new data to the database it is most likely permissions

I would triple check permissions... see my articles if there is any doubt on how permissions are set

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo136-1.htm

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo56-1.htm

, I did not set that variable in the IPN code that aspprotect uses. It is optional.

You will want to download PayPal's IPN documentation and see what the variable is called and then add it to the IPN form code if you want to use it.

it will be a hidden form variable (one line of code added to) paypal2.asp,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I was thinking it was an ASP config/install issue.

I usually deal with Linux/PHP, so this is all new to me :)

,
This post unfortutely needs to be here because this application has been the biggest pain in the neck for me you could possibly imagine. This is not because of problems with the application, but because of people's general lack of knowlegde regarding ASP.NET. This post totally voices my stance on what sort of knowledge you need to have and also the fact that I am not going to support anything but general installation on a correctly and professionaly set up live server.

ASPProtect.NET is a great application but using ASP.NET requires a lot more basic knowledge than using classic ASP and there are a lot of basic low level ASP.NET things that need to be set up correctly for an application like ASPProtect.NET to run. These are things I do not cover because you should know the ASP.NET basics when using an application as complex as this. It's just that I don't have time to nor should I have to teach people the basics of ASP.NET. I don't charge nearly enough for ASPProtect.NET to offer that kind of support.

So, I will say it one more time. ASPProtect.NET is targeted towards experienced Visual Studio.NET developers that know how to work with Code Behind VB.NET and are familiar with basic ASP concepts such as IIS application settings, the .NET framework, the
aspnet_client folder, and the basics of the web.config file.  If you are using ASP.NET for whatever reason you need to know about these things. The best way is to get some good books and do set up ASP.NET on a local development machine so you can start learning.

If you are one of the ASP.NET challenged let me say this as well.

Stick with Classic ASP. ASP.NET is a step in the wrong direction for the average user which I like to refer to as "Joe Coder". Classic ASP is very powerful and easy to pick up. ASP.NET is not easy to pick up and never will be for a lot of people. In my opinion it’s actually the wrong technology to use for anyone other than big corporations who need extreme scalability in their applications or for the hobbyist or object oriented programmer who just wants to use the latest and greatest.  Ask yourself if you really want to deal with compiling Code Behind code each time you make changes to your web site as opposed to just editing some files in notepad real quick like you can do with classic ASP ? Do you have the money to purchase and use Visual Studio.NET or are you going to struggle with compiling all your ASP.NET pages using a command line compiler and a batch file ? Yes, you can build ASP.NET code that isn't code behind but why even bother if that is the case because your missing the point of ASP.NET if you do that and missing out on a lot of powerful new features and concepts.

When I do custom projects for bigger clients I usually end up using ASP.NET because they want to go that way and understand the time and money involved. When I do any of my own projects I use Classic ASP because the truth is you can still make some rockin busy scalable web sites with Classic ASP just like you can still make great web sites with CGI, PP, Cold Fusion.. etc etc. Look around the web because a lot of the biggest sites out there still use those scripting technologies and their stuff runs very well. ASP.NET is a lot of hype and although some things about it are plain awesome it is an environment best suited for real object oriented programmers, not the weekend code warriors.

The other thing to keep in mind about classic ASP is the shear abundance of applications and scripts available for it. ASP.NET can be expensive for that reason alone as there still is a shortage of good time tested applications out there and what is out there is always priced a lot higher.

In addition to that half of the ASP.NET applications out there are just half baked poorly converted versions of their Classic ASP counterparts. Is that the kind of thing you want to sink twice the money into or would you rather have something that runs well and has been tweaked year after year into a rock solid product?

To make things worse a lot of the hosting companies out there offering ASP.NET hosting are severely limiting the basic abilities of ASP.NET because of various security concerns. This means if you go with a Host that does that 75% of the asp.net stuff out there won't run on the hosted server. Isn't that wonderful ?

Now, Let's make things even worse. So far every time Microsoft has released a new version of ASP.NET a lot of things from the previous version have stopped working and needed to be modified to work correctly. Is that really something you will have the time, resources, and energy to deal with.

You may ask "but is classic ASP going to be around 5 years from now?" Though you never really know until the new version of windows server ships I say "Hell Yes" it will be. According to my sources at Port80 Software who work very closely with the folks at Microsoft (as well as many other sources out there) it will almost certainly be in Longhorn which is the next version of Windows Server. Longhorn probably won't come out until 2007 and will be popular for 3-4 years after that. The version of windows server after that will most likely support Classic ASP as well and if it doesn't I am sure there will be a way to make ASP run on it.  If you really look around a lot of hosting companies are still running Windows Server 2000 which is 5 years old at the moment. The bottom line is Classic ASP helped put Microsoft web technologies on the map. Microsoft can not simply drop it because if they do they give up a dominate market share to the scripting competition being PHP, CGI, Cold Fusion.. etc etc PHP for instance a huge installed base on many platforms which are essentially free. ASP.NET can not compete with that in any way and not supporting Classic ASP would put microsoft in a bad position.

Take it from me. If you are a weekend code warrior/script kiddie. You'll be a lot happier sticking with classic ASP. You will also have save a lot of money and you can still have great web sites. There are tons of great applications out there in ASP and ASP still is and always will be the easiest scripting language to work with and learn. Better yet look around on sites like www.4guysfromrolla.com and see if you actually understand any of the latest articles. If it looks like Greek to you that is yet another sign that you should stick to classic ASP.

Personally, I will be focusing just as much time and effort on ASP.NET as I will on Classic ASP in the years to come for a few reasons.
  1. Because I sell software I obviously need to convert/re-write most of my appIications to work with ASP.NET. My living may eventually depend on it.

  2. Because I love using the latest technologies I want to continue to develop using ASP.NET.

  3. Because I do many custom projects for various clients using ASP.NET is a must.
  4. Because in some cases using ASP.NET over classic ASP makes total sense.

Just don't fall for the HYPE folks. I am one of the few established developers out there that has a set of Balls and is willing to put the truth out there and see past the bullsh*t. If you go ASP.NET do it because you seriosuly think you need the power and scalabilty and money and time is not an issue or because you are a hobbiest and object oriented programmer who likes working with and has time to work with the latest and greatest web scripting technolgies out there. I truly believe that so far ASP.NET is as much a success as it is a failure. I am sure some of you out there know what I mean by that.

All this being said you should also realize that ASPProtect.NET is a little different than your average ASP.NET application because it uses a lot of advanced ASP.NET techniques and you essentially use it to password protect your existing scripts meaning you need to integrate your stuff with our stuff in a sense. If you just go buy some random ASP.NET application like a classifieds system or storefront it is probably just going to run on it's own an therefore will be a lot easier to set up and deal with.

,

I dont know about the unspecified errors. I really need more detailed information. (Since it has been working fine for quite a long time you might want to consider installaing the application from scracth again and see if you still get errors)

As for the log in not persiting. Did you by chance turn off cookies in your browser ? They are required for forms based authentication to function. Otherwise, yes you would need to log in to each and every page as you moved around.

cwilliams38414.6054166667,

Okay, so I copied the txt file into the export file and tried the import users option and it timed out on me as well.

Would it be easier to figure out if you were able to look at the iis server?

, Thanks for the information. We added the name manually instead of using the App_Name variable.,

no, that system only works with ASP.NET code.

Currently it can not possibly work with classic asp.
PayPal made it a nightmare to use and work with.

Special things regarding the signing of digital certificates also need to be installed on the web server so if it isn't your server your also out of luck.

,

I have tried everything to get your CJWSoft code working..I purchased the auto listings software and I am stumped, and actually you stumped my hosting provider, my database is stored in the database directory on the root.

I have even tried your ASPtest and still cannot connect.  My have connected other databases without an issue on this same host, I have named a DNS Auto for my database and ponted to that in my code  but get the following error you see at http://www.burkesauto.com and even when i try you test script found here at http://www.burkesauto.com/asptest.asp .

cwilliams38145.8522800926,

You cant do it from initial lohin, but you can do it from the time of registration signup.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo170-1.htm

As for the emailing thing it is most likely an email sending issue more than a code problem. For example spam filters incorrectly grabiing those emails or something of that nature..

Best thing to do is try different things for emailing options until you get something that works. I suggest using CDOSYS with a real email server and using a valid email account for yourself at that email domain. SMTP authentication if necessary. This will ensure the emails sent have valid MX records and dont get treated as spam.

, the email address thing could be done many ways... personally I would remove the username field from the registration form.. and modify things so the email field got used for username and for email when everything gets saved on the page that register.asp posts to. ... it would all require some messing around with the code and time... nothing too hard really

as for the password thing it all happens in the register.asp file.. the same page the registration screen is on in the web browser.. again a little bit of fooling around and time but not difficult ,

you dont want to use the virtual smtp virtual server method... you want to use a real remote email server with valid MX records..

ultimately though after all that is going is it is out of the hands of the asp code and it becomes issues other then the code sending the email... regarding to whether or not emails get blocked by certain organizations

For example:
I have many aol users sign up for various systems I have running without issue. I use CDOSYS with my own server mail.cjwsoft.com which has proper MX records set up.

I would also try to determine the difference between blocking and spam/junk email filtering. It is impoirtant to truly know what is going on.
Sometimes adding more information to the body of the emails going out will eliminate the junk mail filters from gettings the emails.

Then you have the various open relay lists that places like AOL use. If your email server or IP sending the email is on those lists for spamming you do not stand a chance. That is all out of the hands of the ASP code.

, Wonderful!  Does it matter if I move the aspbanner logo, as long as I keep it on the page? Or does it need to stay front and center?

Laura
,

I have never heard of such a thing...
If the settings are enabled for the web it should work.
That is, as long as your include file syntax is valid.

I run my own windows 2003 server (you are on it now) so I should know

for troubleshooting

try a very very simple example... like a file in a folder.. with a server side include to a file under it

and see if that works

use real simple asp files with nothing crazy in them... and an include like this

<!--#include file = "../myfile.asp"-->

cwilliams38434.5388773148, Installing and running NET on a DOMAIN CONTROLLER is a BAD idea period. Besides the security risks you will have nothing but endless problems with that setup. Domain controllers ARE NOT and NEVER were intended to be run as any sort of application server. Your best bet is to run your asp and asp.net scripts from a member server or one set up just for web apps. Of course if your in the mood to mess around endlessly it is possible to make that work, but why would you want to when the prefered solution is a heck of a lot easier.
,

Yes, you are right.

We have now tested it using the DSN less connection with Access 2002 and it works fine. We have also tested it again with a DSN using 2002 and this also seems to work.

The comment about speed is a consideration although I have not noticed any differences. ( we only have a few database entries at this time).

Thanks for your help

,

When adding a new user I am taken to a form.

There are several "required fields".

First and last names are 2 of them.

This is not needed by me and I need the company name as a required field instead. I work and deal with company names, not individuals.

So, i am unable to add any users due to this.

How can I either do away with the names as a required field or swap the individual names with the company name as a required field?

I have customers wanting to be able to view their own stats, but I need to do away with the required fields to work with my customer base.

,

How can i get to this to register someone in the database only after the Paypal payment has been accepted.  I was testing it out to see if it makes it to my Paypal account (which it did just fine) then I closed Paypal before paying.  I logged in as the administrator and looked at the member list and the account was created anyway.  How can I stop this from being created until "only" after the Paypal payment has been "approved"?

What if this person never comes back to "try again"? Now the username he used (and is inactive) is not available for anyone else to use.  And it takes up database space.

I am using the Paypal (non-subscription)

Thanks in advance,
scottyFlasher

, to finalize this thread.... turns out I was correct and this person was not unzipping the zip file correctly. ,

Are you reffering to the number of the left of the users name in admin.

I thought it was a counter at first but that number only displays the number of albums they have set up.

, do you want my help making the database with your import file ?,

Perfect. Thanks buddy :)

eeye38433.0629976852,

I have sent an registration email (as test) to both a yahoo account and also my own email server and in both cases I get the same issue, all else is working great. I am sure its somthing simple, perhaps I am over looking somthing else. the site url is www.rochestertek.us/asp/users/register.asp if this helps

Again thanks.

,

New Power Supply and a new (CPU Fan/Heat Sink) seemed to do the the trick. She's running like a champ now...

Hopefully it keeps doing so. Only time will tell.

It she's stable I can get back to designing some new software.

cwilliams38296.9772800926, if you use our existing User_ID they are going to get new ID's. There is nothing you can do about that.

You could very easily though stick your exisisting User_ID's in one of the custum fields so you dont lose that info for each member., its in this thread.. you use the InStr function
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=17&KW= instr

Please use a little bit more descriptive subject the next time you post. "question" does not tell much to someone looking through threads.. and I like to keep things clean and organized in the forums

I edited it for you this time..

thx ,

The way the application ships there are no password confirmation areas anywhere ? Please be more specific as to what you have done and if any mods are involved ?

If you are talking about one of the MODS please realize they are not supported. http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo459-1.htm

Even though they are not supported I look them over pretty closely and I know of no issue like you mentioned so I would suggest re-downloading the MOD. Perhaps you got a corrupt download or file.

,

OK, I just spent like an hour in your site.. I almost gave up

1st off... I don't know what FTP Program/Settings or what OS you are using but all the ASP Protect Files had been reformatted in a odd way which was causing some issues and the database also had problems. Your somehow introducing all sorts of UNIX line breaks to all the files and the database was actually missing some crucial parts of itself and was corrupted. So I had to update everything which means a new database. I have never seen anything like it but I fixed it all. Its something you are doing but I do not know what. Maybe your unzipping method again ?

So to get back into the admin area...

admin
test

Now, the reason  the albums were not showing is because you are using the ole connection string which causes problems like that. However because you host has like the worst setup ever with that network path crap for the site that was the only connection string that would work for some reason.

I highly suggest a new host with a proper setup for running ASP. www.alentus.com
Your hosting companies setup is horrid as far as I am concerned.
Access Databases are not meant to be connected to via a network path.
http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2168

Anyway, I rewrote some of the code because of the ole connection and got the albums showing up for you.. who knows what other problems that OLE connection may bring up in the future.. for now things I tested seem ok.

As for your broken image in the your header/footer...  You cant link to images and links using virtual pathing in those includes because the files are called from different directories and will work in some and not others

so when your in the root you see the image, when in a different folder you see a broken image

In other words.

link to

http://www.vickerylightning.com/gallery/vickery_template5_r2 _c1.jpg

not just

vickery_template5_r2_c1.jpg

The same goes for hyperlinks.. use the full url paths

Whatever you do...Back up the gallery folder with my changes before you go doing anything.

, Not the way it ships. You would have to add that functionality by editing the source code and database.,

as far as sql goes if you follow the instructions with give for setting up a new database you shouldnt have any issues and permissions should be already set. because we handle that in the sql script we give you.. "its a good thing to look at and it is pretty easy to understand what is going on""

however using another account could cause permissions issues.."yes, even sa"     basically the username your using needs datareader and datawriter permissions to all tables used by the photo gallery system and you probably have to go specifically set them usin ght e security tab for your database in enterprise manager. This is more of SQL server 101 than anything to do with the Photo Gallery Code so I am not going to get into it too deeply, but that is definetly the issue.  Permissions...

cwilliams38303.6065740741, aspprotect does not use a global.asa file

I would start by looking there and seeing what is going on ... with line 33

I dont see how it could be related to aspprotect in any way

Global.asa files fire on their own and what they do depends on what code is put in them,
