It didn't fix it.  Looks like I had the current code.  I bought the system in mid-April.  The version says 3-10-2005.

I do know that in the database, the password shows as " éG"  but in the error code, it shows as " éG".  The square character is missing.

I've encountered another problem.  When i edit the link for existing banners and save it, the banner reverts to the old link instead of the new one.

The directory where the the database is located to rwed so the permissions is not a problem.

you also need to use newer versions of the database as the odbc drivers on the server are sometimes very new and no longer work with access 97 databases

I'm getting errors when clicking the Update Config Button in the System Info page and when clicking the log files button.

I'm not sure if it's a permission thing or not.  ASPNET and IUSR both have modify access to the _database folder and childs, yet I'm still getting the error:

and the permissions, how exactly were they set ?
I find a lot of customers think they are setting permissions correctly when they really are not. That's why I wrote that long article on the subject.

As you probably know a data connection is a very low level thing. It is the foundation of any ASP application that communicates with a database. Unfortunatly it sometimes takes a while to get the hang of setting them up without issue.

Everything must be perfect.. the ODBC drivers must be up to date, folder permission are critical, sometimes you must use a new version of the access database.. etc etc etc  The errors and things that happen when all these things are not perfect and not helpful as you have found out.

I would suggest you download and get ASPTest from CJWSoft running before you go any further. It is designed to be as simple as possible and helps get a hang of the database setup process.

You can certainly still use the apllication but as that article says you will need to change any file includes to virtual includes so they will work with parent paths disabled

Either server side or right in the form via client side javascript.

I dont have any experience with validating zip codes here much less UK.

Google it would be my best advice.. or maybe find some free app written in UK format and see how they did it.

The main users screen... the 1st screen you see when you go to the admin area..  where you email an individual user..

The settings I am referring to being the various emailing settings on the settings screen, The settings you showed me.

As for emailing via a remote server over dsl. It may not be working because the ISP's block the port (25) to stop people from running email servers over their dsl.

Your POP3 works because POP3 uses port 110.

If you want to send emails from your local server on your dsl you should probably install the SMTP service of IIS if you have not and send emails using that with CDOSYS. Either that or get a commerical DSL account with a static IP that allows for running email servers.

I am using ASPProtect's password program, which has been very successful, for managing over 1,500 military veterans' memberships at http://www.vspa.com.  What I am trying to do now is utilize the "Groups" code, as generated by the Admin page, to prevent members with expired accounts (and non-members) from accessing restricted "members only" .ASP pages they may have bookmarked, or found via web search. What I would like to have happen is expired members and non-members would be sent (or Redirected) to a Login page. I do not want the Login password box to merely be inserted above the page that I am trying to keep them from visiting.

You would carefully use the built in features of access to import/export data.

The password for our databases is noted in the documentation. It's pretty hard to miss really. You can also see the database password by looking at the connection string info.

I noticed that is grabbing the wrong URL for some reason. Even when i mouse over the URL its somehow getting the users sub directory. How.. i dont know... when i erase that users in the url it works perfectly.

Next off you never mentioned having an issue with it saying aspprotect in it. I am EXTREMELY clear about what I support and do not regarding ASPProtect.NET. My god, I sent you to like the best and most detailed tutorial on how to setup and use the application with VS.NET that could ever exist. Ok, if the link to the import/export screen does not show up its probably because you never put the import/export path in the admin settings?

go check that for me.

cause running that page without a path for the files could cause a timeout.. thats why the link doesn't show if the path is not entered (so people won't run it)

Settings below specify the physical directory path of the export directory. This is used by the system when using the import/export feature. The export directory needs modify permissions for the anonymous webserver account.

I have aspprotect in its own directory in the website. I have read the installation several times and I am afraid I am missing something blatently obvious so I really appreciate you thoughts.

I am presently using redirects. I like not haveing to use them as your comments have suggested. I have pulled all that code from the pages I desire to protect during this test.

Parent paths being enabled on the server is a requirement of the application. That error means just what it says.

you can change all the server side includes to virtual includes that will work or you can ask you host to enable parent paths.. those are the options

Though what you just said is a bit confusing it sounds like you have some sort of browser problem and it is doing the redirect every single time. ?

I would suggest reseting all your browser settings to normal and making sure cookies are enabled because forms based authentication uses session variables and cookies must be enabled for session variables to work correctly. If not something like this could happen as the redirection at 1st login would happen over and over every time.

So try it on other computers and try with firefox as well as IE. Many people go nuts with their browser settings and way too much stuff blocked which can cuse all sorts of issues. Also some script blocking and firewall software can cause problems so disable all of that when testing.

You may also have created some sort of endless loop. (I really need to know way more information on what you did to know that for sure)

You may also want to consider doing your redirects manually meaning you protect a a page and right after the protection you use regular ASP redirect statements to redirect the user whevever you like based on their session info which is available to easily check immediatly after someone gets through the authentication.

I still stand behind my statements that redirection is not good site design. You really really need to understand and plan your ASP pages as well as have a very good understanding of the session and how all of that works if you use redirection with a password authentication scenario. You should never be redirecting someone to an ".htm" pages except during testing because you wont be able to stop users who are not supposed to go there from going there directly.

Its still not there as labeled 'internet guest'.  There's a 'guest' and a host of others.  Is there a way to identify it as the proper guest account to use with ASPProtect?

Also, looking through support documentation, I see other possibilities it could be (http://www.powerasp.com/content/hintstips/permissions.asp).  Is there a way of telling which the problem is and whether we use a dsn connection or not?

From looking at that save code I dont see where Last_Name was required. The only name I saw required was a 1st name.

Also.. making the First_Name not required may break something somwhere else. I dont think it will but it might. You are warned.

I think I understand that your code is written in VBscript and that is why it is not working.  If this is the case, how can I switch to VB to execute your stuff then switch back?

Look in the "check_user_inc.asp" file..

You'll see the name of the cookie there and also get an idea how to access it.

In most versions it looks like this.

Request.Cookies("PASWORDSYSTEMCOOKIE")("COOKIE_USERNAME")

You'll want the cookie for the username because the session variable will not exist unless they have actually gone to a protected page during that session at the site.

It would probably be best the check for both the session and the cookie. That will make sure people logged in that arent using the cookie option still see the message you want to display.
