we ended up resolving it...

More Info in Case Anyone is Interested:

This bug was mentioned by a couple people. The cause of it was never really understood until I recently re-wrote some of the banner code for an upcoming version.

The fix for this bug was very simple. It was just one of those weird situations where code should have worked but did not. I added some code to do it a bit differently and it worked as it should have..

It really still makes no sense to me why it didnt work the way it was, but at least there is a fix.

cwilliams38203.5883680556,

here ya go

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo169-1.htm

, MSACCESS or SQL server ?,

also.. every once in a while I get some nervous person concerned about security... and the pros and cons of having parent paths enabled.

etc etc etc

so let me add this bit of info..

I don’t know what your hosting company will say because it is an iffy topic and those that understand it have a hard time explaining it to someone who doesn't. Also usually the hosting company doesn't have a clue except they heard it was a security risk.

Here is the low down from someone that really understands it...
(well, at least I think I do)

The only real security risks are from YOU and possibly other people hosting on the same server if they have parent paths enabled that is.

Meaning your site visitors can't possibly do anything with it unless of course you let them upload and run their own asp files to the server.

Anyway.. if YOU run malicious asp scripts you could potentially attack other sites on the server and look at things you shouldn't. As could other sites on the same server do to you I suppose.

So, unless you plan on doing that or some other site admin on the server does it to you its not really a concern. Just an advantage in coding abilities.

If you attack someone elses site on the server or lurk where you shouldnt then you are probably violating your hosting agreement.

99% of the time everyone gets all nervous over nothing.. half the people nervous about this have sites nobody would ever want to hack anyway.

Many people with a really important/busy sites are going to have a dedicated server somewhere so the setting is not relevant..

The hosting companies of course have to warn you.

This setting was enabled by default for years on IIS4-IIS5. I never once heard one single real story about anyone attacking anything because of this setting. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen but I am just telling you what I know.

This is all my opinion so take it for what it is...

If you are a Hosting Company your better off turning it on at the customers request, giving them a warning about it, and in turn having happy customers.

The big hosting companies like Alentus and MaximumASP do it...

There are far worse things than this to let people do after all.

Beleive it or not I have actually been in servers where they gave the anonymous webserver acount modify permissions EVERYWHERE yet they disabled parent paths ????

cwilliams38391.6024189815,

I think its great to share a mod.

I will have  few with the new album.

,

You really should just look at the documentation that came with the application. It tells you everything you need to know.

it is in the docs folder in html format.. it is also linked to from the aspclassifieds website

http://www.aspclassifieds.com/demo/docs/

,

thanks!! the file took care of the extra slash. I also fixed the problem by modifying the permissions.

dazed

,

if you use either of those options the mail server info you use must of course be valid (example: mail.somesite.com) your host can provide that info

you should also make sure your sending the emails using an account at your email server.. not some other email you have

other than that if it does not send emails it could be because your hosting company may require authentication for outgoing emails...

ask them ...

if that is the case the version of ASPBanner you have does not support sending email that way and you would need to add the necessary code to any places that send email... in order for emailing to work

, My server is Server2003.  I could not find the folder settings you mentioned.  I did find a iuser which I added as specified.  I retried to perform an upload.   Still same message.  But it does move the JPG to the picture folder.  So, part of it is working. ,

Really, only you or your hosting company would know that information...

It is usally installed in the "_database" folder but the physical path including the drive letter  to that can only be known by asking your hosting company or by using server mappath to learn the path on you own.
http://www.powerasp.com/content/hintstips/physical-path.asp

That folder also needs special permissions. The permissions it needs are covered in the documentation for the software and generally only your hosting compnay can set those permissions.

The online support forums here are full of information and resources on correctly setting up data connections. It is ASP 101 and something you really need to have an understanding of.

I am happy to answer questions and try to help, but if you dont want to deal with it or can't we do offer installation services.

If you have an album with more than 96 pictures, the spacing in the tables can become incorrect, with pictures touching each other. (This program is not designed to handle more than 96 pictures due to server speed, but it can handle more than 96 with minor changes to the code.) Also, after 96 pictures, the pictures will not have 6 on a line, but rather 6 on a line up to 96 pictures and then the rest of the pictures on one line next to each other extending to the right of the screen endlessly. To fix this, I simply edited the ASP code using the following loop. It can be a perminent fix, because I used the maxpicsperalbum variable to define the spacing.

<%
Dim SixInterval
For SixInterval = 2 to maxpicsperalbum
 SixInterval = SixInterval + 5
%>
 <% If PicIndex = SixInterval THEN %>
  </tr>
  <tr>
 <% End If %>
<% Next %>

Then, the following code must be commented out:

<% If PicIndex = 6 or PicIndex = 12 or PicIndex = 18 or PicIndex = 24 or PicIndex = 30 or PicIndex = 36 or PicIndex = 42 or PicIndex = 48 or PicIndex = 54 or PicIndex = 60 or PicIndex = 66 or PicIndex = 72 or PicIndex = 78 or PicIndex = 84 or PicIndex = 90 or PicIndex = 96 Then %>
 </tr>
 <tr>
<% End If %>

This code can be found in scripts/view_album_style*STYLE NUMBER*_inc.asp . (STYLE NUMBER depending on which style you are using (found in config file))

This change in code will enter a new table row after each 6th picture. You can have more or less than 6 pictures per line depending on the width of your files and preference by changing  changing the number 5 in this line of code: SixInterval = SixInterval + 5

If you have any questions, JPortnoy@Checkernet.com

jamapor38210.5987384259, you can whatever you like but like I said those gif files are already in the correct place. The log parser is messing up. , After you click the link in the confirmation e-mail you are directed to the Thank you page.  Right above is a sign in link.  When I click this I get that funky error message.

I am trying to integrate  the scripts with the look of my site,  if that is what you mean by changing things around too much.  But, I don't think I have done anything out of the ordinary.

Cheers,
Roy
,

Editing the look of the login page.

In this version editing the look of the login page is very easy.
You can make this login page look exactly like you web site if you like.

You want to edit the "scripts/login_form_inc.asp" file.

It can be edited with any editor as long as the existing bits of server side code in it and the login form remain in tact.

The best thing to do is back it up before you start editing it.
Then if you goof it up you can revert back to the original.

If you edit this page with FrontPage enable the "show all" feature.
Its the little PIE sign in your icons. It will show the server side code as yellow things on the screen so you know where they are and can be careful not to delete them.

see screenshot

cwilliams38448.8132638889, to finalize this thread.... turns out I was correct and this person was not unzipping the zip file correctly. ,

yes, usernames and passwords are both case sensitive. It increases security.

,

like I said... you would have to modify the code
(and really I dont think it is possible, how could it be when images uploaded are of all shapes and sizes)

How are pictures of various shapes and size going to resized to a fixed width and height without distortion on either a horizontal or vertical level ? Uness the image uploaded matches the fixed thumbnail ratio you have set there is going to be distortion.

There is no component that is going to make it any easier. You are already using an image resizing component.

I give you two options the way the code ships.

fixed width and height for thumbnails

or

fixed width / dynamic height for thumbnails

The only other possible option would be

fixed height / dynamic width for thumbnails

and that you would have to code on your own because that option is not there

The last thing I will say is this. Sorry, but I do not support custimizations to the code. It's just not easy to explain. Its a lot of code work. Its a lot of time.

,

OK, thanks.

Nick

,

It's not normal at all. My guess you accidently edited the code in a bad way.

(thats the same code the every guestbook in every application I sell uses including ASPGuest which gets downloaded for free about 50 times a day)

No one has ever said it acted funny.

I would do a default installation with the original code somewhere and see if the problem occurs. If it does I can take a look.

In the meantime I wouldn't be running that as it is probably using up massive processor time because of whatever is wrong with it.

cwilliams38454.954212963, check the connection string in the dataconn_inc.asp file. If using MSAccess it will show the location. If using SQL Server it will show the SQL Server details in which case there is no physical database file.,
Chris-

That appears to have fixed it!!! Thanks alot for your patience, I will never question your brilliance (or customer service) again! Where do I write you a smashing review?
Thanks!

, huh?  I think I just covered that as that is the way it must be done.,

Is there an easy way to make this work with reoccurring a monthly or yearly subscription?

, I posted this in the wrong forum. Sorry.

I have installed ASPProtect on a client's website and I have been notified that some of their customers have been unable to login to the protected pages.

On testing it seems that the issues seem to be related to how cookies are being stored by IE 6.

ASPProtect is being used to protect particular template files within a Content Mangement System. 90% of the time it is working fine but on the odd occassion particular cutomers are unabe to login.

After quite a bit of testing I have managed to find the scenario in which it starts to have problems and was hoping you may be able to provide a solution.

If a customer enters the wrong password, then reenters the correct username and password, they receive a message "template can not be found" from the Content Management System. This message is generated when a url is entered that contains a link to a template file that does not exist. In this case the template does exist. If I remove the ASPProtect code the page opens without error.

Everytime they re-enter the details they receive the same message.

If they close down the browser and then reenter the correct details in some instances the page will open correctly.

More often than not, they have to delete cookies and temporary files and  close the browser. This seems to fix the problem again for most users. For users who's web access is heavily cached by an internal server, even this does not work.

Have you come across this problem before and can you suggest a remedy.

If you can email me privately I can give you the URL and access codes.

Thanks,

Stuart , ok, glad it is working,

Humm.. that should have worked fine

why are you getting a "OLE DB" error I wonder ?

I need more information.

Database being used and version ?
Server OS Version?
Connection String being used ?

etc etc

, Interesting.. Yes, the SMTP service is turned on.  This is my boogle.  If they are both installed, then it should in theory work.  But for some reason, it is being subborn and not working.,

Regarding hosting companies..

Now.. obviously if you are hosting on someone elses server you may not be able to set permissions like this.

Ultimately, if you are hosting somewhere and ASP and Database connectivity is part of your hosting plan. It is the hosting company's responsibility to set these permissions for you when asked or to give you a special interface to do so on your own. If they are not helping you do this then maybe it is time to get a hosting company that is serious about your ASP Hosting Needs.

Also... JUST TO BE PERFECTLY CLEAR

The permissions we are talking about cannot be set via FTP or Frontpage access to your web site. They must be set like shown above or via a special interface meant to set the permissions correctly. For all you people out there messing with the permissions you see in FTP and Frontpage.. you are wasting your time and possibly creating problems in your web.

All ASP scripts that communicate with an Access Database, Upload Pictures, Modify Text files.... are going to need these permissions set in some way or another. We have no control over that fact.

cwilliams38360.69125,

I am getting closer.

This error actually does not have anything to do with the forgotten password feature or your database.

It has to do with the settings you chose for emailing.

it relates to aspmail and it not liking the remotehost you used, or something like that.... etc etc

, I dont what it is..u got to just keep trying stuff like connecting to different versions of the database and maybe even the version with no password set on it.. maybe do some iisresets in between if it is your server.. maybe try putting the database in a different folder

Usually people have zero trouble setting up this particular app because everything is so time tested and rock solid...

its just got to be something related to the actual data connection.. low level stuff , I have been told it does as I got about 5 people or so who upgraded but I have not used SQL 2005 yet. I'll order a copy.,

Hi Chris,

I have a small problem, I have installed asp photo gallery pro on a hosted site, and after eventually getting them to modify permissions on directories it is essentially working, except that it won't delete pictures from an album. If I delete an album the pictures are left in the pictures directory, but the album is no longer displayed. If I then make a new album it is labelled incrementally... ie I had one album "album_ID_1", deleted it created a new album it is labelled "album_ID_2". I would have thought that the new album would be called "album_ID_1" ie taking the place of the deleted one. It seems to me that the delete album function isn't fully working either. My hosting comppany swears that the permissions on the pictures directory are set to full access for everybody. What have I done wrong?

Thank you

Nigel

,

nope ,sql server has nothing to do with this

I am talking about the folder pictures are stored in.. it needs modify permissions set for the internet guest account like those articles talk about

,

http://gibsoncity.info/guestbook/default.asp

Reports 65-messages, however after the first 10 are displayed and you click on the More Messages button, I get the Page cannot be found error.

,

as far as permissions are concerned I wrote two large articles about permissions that cover everything in detail on how to properly set them

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/info11.htm

see the windows 2003 and windows xp permission threads

From things you are saying I assume this is your server. My comments about the path looking funny are because very few commercial hosts would use the "c:\inetpub\wwwroot\" directory. If you are using that and that is correct info then that is fine.

as for knowing whether or not the filesystem object is working the best thing to do is to try to write  a text file somewhere in your web and see if it works. Testing something under the most basic scenario is the key to troubleshooting asp issues.

http://www.devasp.com/samples/writetofile.asp

, At the bottom of my "users" list page, it asks the question "number of users displayed per page"?  After hitting a larger number than the default of 1-25, it increases the number of users per page to that number.  But as soon as I leave that page, it goes back to the default.  Any thoughts?, This relates to a part of the new documentation that wasn't ready yet.
I just made a thread about it though.

Here you go.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=198& ; ;PN=1&TPN=1 cwilliams38419.5353587963,

I am using ASPProtect's password program, which has been very successful, for managing over 1,500 military veterans' memberships at http://www.vspa.com.  What I am trying to do now is utilize the "Groups" code, as generated by the Admin page, to prevent members with expired accounts (and non-members) from accessing restricted "members only" .ASP pages they may have bookmarked, or found via web search. The code generated and used is as follows:

<%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>
<!-- Begin ASPProtect Code -->
<!-- Groups with access to this page. ( * ADMIN * Member Current * Member Life * Officer/Staff * ) -->
<% GROUPACCESS = "10,12,14,19" %>
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
<!-- End ASPProtect Code -->

The above is placed over the <html><head> statements on the page.

When I am logged in the code works perfectly! When I log off and try the URL again, the page appears in its entirety but with a Login box for Username and Login Password at the top of the page. You may view the problem at: http://www.vspa.com/aspprotect/vspa-password-enter.asp .

What I would like to have happen is expired members and non-members would be sent (or Redirected) to a Login page. I do not want the Login password box to merely be inserted above the page that I am trying to keep them from visiting.

Don Poss,
VSPA Webmaster

,

I was told by my ISP to use localhost and it should work and it does not. It does not require authentication to send e-mails.

Any other ideas?

Thanks
