Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 4:23:59 PM

Those access levels are not used and are nothing to worry about. They are left over from the ASPProtect core which I used for the users area of ASPBanner.

I am not sure what you did but its not a none, Unless I know more I can not make any guesses what happened. I would make sure in the database that the user is active and the expiration date field for them if there is one is empty,

Triple check the upgrade instructions because I think you missed something important.

line 227 on "/password_admin/save.asp" refers to the "Password" field

the error your getting most likely means it is not there..

Pay close attention to the areas in the upgrade instructions regarding renaming your existing "Password" field to "Old_Password"

Then making a new "Password" field and carefully following the instructions needed to convert your old passwords for use with the new system.

If you don't everything carefully and perfectly this is the sort of error you will get.

cwilliams38451.8787268519,

do you have the url path to the registration page set correctly in the settings cause not having it there would do that ? , we ended up resolving it...

the physical path being used was invalid, You shouldn't be renaming or moving anything... unless you really really understand what you are doing and are at an expert level expert as far as ASP coding goes.

like I said earlier..

redirecting with version 6 is not supported but this thread tells you exactly how to set it up (I showed you this thread in an that earlier post)

This thread below may also help in case the page you want to start on with a login form should not be password protected..

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the answer. No, I am not using Paypal since these are employees and sales reps. I guess i'm on my own on this one. :)

Thanks

vaghelis38300.5484143519,

Hello,

Again, enspecified error are not very helpful.
An error usually tells you at least a line number and page or something.

Please read this as it might help do tell me more.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11& PN=1

As for only happening once in a while. It could be a lot of things.

Version being used (when did you purchase.. what name/email was it under and I can look) ?
What banner method being used?
Access or MSSQL ?
How busy the site is ?
Server Resources ?

cwilliams38414.6114930556, That worked...but when I tried importing the test user, the password was imported in an add formated...like it was encrypted, and I can't log in using the User ID that I imported.,

Please be aware folks..

This file is not provided by CJWSoft. Though this may work very well use of it is not supported in any way. We have not tested it.

This user is not using the option pack so this file will not be compatible with anyone using that because it does not have support for groups and some of the other new features.

Regardless..we appretiate users sharing ideas and solutions that they have come up with.

cwilliams38313.499837963,

UPDATE..

Installed a new rack mount 1u server this week.

3.2 ghz hyperthreading 1 mb l2 cache prescott cpu
2 gb pf pc3200 kingston memory
SATA Raid.. (2) 120 gb drives running hardware raid 1

It is a supermicro 1u server case and server motherboard.
The hard drives are SATA 150 120 gb 7200 rpm Diamondmax Maxtors

All high end server type stuff... It's a very powerful server and has been running great all week. 500+ hours uptime so far.

Running Windows 2003 Server Enterprise
SQL 2000 Enterprise SP3
SmarterMail
SmarterStats
Windows DNS
ZipEnable (which I am reviewing for them)
ServerMask (which I am reviewing for them)
A ton of ASP Components which I have purchased over the years.

So that means I can now focus my attention on creating software again instead of being a system admin. (Due to these server issues over the past few months I am now back to godly status as far as windows system administration goes.. not to mention I am now back up to speed on the latest processors and hardware)

So, getting back to ASP Photo Gallery...

I spent about 20 more hours this week on the new version of ASP Photo Gallery Pro.. I have another 40 or more to put into it as I have a lot I want to do.

I think it will be ready within the next three weeks. I know a lot of you have been waiting for something.

cwilliams38331.5907060185,

Ok, I started the database tables from scratch. I did everything using sql enterprise manager and query analizer..

Same thing happens... certain passwords just do not work.

So I did a lot of testing and I have come to the conclusion that this has something to do with the regional settings of that SQL server.

Here is an example.. see the screenshot below.

Username "admin" password "petepetepete"

The top query done in Enterprise Manager is valid and shows the user.

The bottom query is also valid but it does not show the user.

And that is exactly what is happening from the ASP codes point of view.

Now, this means that even though that encrypted password is getting saved to the databse correctly this particular SQL server just cant deal with it from a QUERY.

It works fine on two different SQL servers that I have. It's just got to be something regional related like unicode characters not being dealt with correctly or something odd like that.

I tried changing the collation data for the "Password" field type on that SQL server and it looks right. I don't know what else to do but it is something about that SQL server. There may be a way to change the regional setting through the connection string but I cant find any articles on that right now.

One solution I have for you to get this working there is to eliminate the encryption factor then I dont think you will have these issues.

It's either that or find another SQL server with US type settings or use MSAccess. ASPProtect runs nearly as fast on Access as long as you do not have over 10,000 users or whatever. The system hardly ever accesses the database so it performance under MSAccess is always good.

Let me know what you want to do. I can shows you how to eliminate the encrypytion factor if you want to try that. I think if I make you a custom version of the RC4 function you can just replace that and then the system will use plain passwords.

Your call..

, thanks!, Even if I try to upload the test file that was included with the system I still get the same error.

My host is using Windows 2003 Server.

Will send you a private email to see if the issues can be sorted out.

Thanks
,

(Indemnification Agreement Mod)

This very simple mod will add an Indemnification Agreement Pop-up to the registration signup form which must be agreed to before continuing. This is often done for legal reasons to help cover yourself if something should come up later on.

Instructions:

Download 2006-03-19_212700_Indemnification_Agreement_Mod.zip which contains "terms.js" and put it in your scripts folder. It contains the text that will be displayed in the pop-up. You can of course carefully edit it with a text editor to say whatever you like.

Now carefully edit "users/register.asp" with a text editor. Add this bit of code in blue right after the include to the "footer_inc.asp" file like so. It will be near the bottom of the page.

<!--#INCLUDE FILE="footer_inc.asp"-->

<% If ErrorMessage = "" Then %>
<script language="JavaScript" src="../scripts/terms.js">
</script>
<% End If %>

Your done, that's it. Now when "users/register.asp" is run for the 1st time the pop-up will come up.

, FYI. There is a typo in the upgrade (6.0 to 7.0) instructions. It specifies adding a field named "passwords". Should be "password"., also.. you could try chaning your connection string to set the current language to english like in this example..

BannerConnectionString = "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=127.0.0.1;Initial Catalog=aspbanner;User Id=aspbanneruser;Password=temp;Current
Language=English
;"

I do not know if that actually works but from what I have been researching it looks valid and it may solve your problem.

Also: The value may need to be Current Language=us_english

You'll have to try them,

It appears there is an auto logout after inactivity for a period of time.  How does one change the default time allowed for inactivity?

thx

, Humm..

I have no idea where links to hose graphics are being called.

I checked the source of edt_banner.asp and I see no calls to any images named like that

I didnt see any calls in the header and footer files either...

,

I am running Windows 2000 server. I do believe asp.net IS installed as I have the .NET 1.1 framework installed.

Funny about the bounce backs. I am at about 10% of my limit, which I control as I am the network admin. I'll check into that.

,

I am not sure totally understand your question.
I need you to explain it differently.

Any ".asp" page that is protected is going to automatically prompt them for a login box or log them in automatically depending on if they set that option.. In the end returning them to that same page.

So, it really all takes care of itself for the most part.. It doesn't even matter if the bookmark a protected page deep in your site. The system is smart enough to keep them at that page as well as handle their access.

Now of course if they are at an unprotected page of your site and navigate to a protected page they get a loin prompt or are allowed in if they already logged in...

Also.. when you say unprotected page ? do you mean ".htm" or ".asp"

cwilliams38298.6571759259,

I checked through the code and could not find anything as well.

However, I do think it may be related somehow to the code as I get the messages popping up in the error log only after I have edited a banner.

If there is nothing obvious, I may just set my error log to filter and automatically delete this type of error.  Not something I prefer to do.

Thanks for the quick response.

Otherwise the program is working very well and I'm happy with it.

,

Sorry, should have added,  if i change the connection string, i can also get this...

[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

,

I used Dreamweaver4 to make my site is there anything I can do to make it work?

,

Hey, I run a business and I will not have things like that mentioned in these forums.

, I really need more information..

SQL or Access database ?
If Access are you using the newest version of the .mdb file

Is this a new item ?

Show me your connection string ?

perhaps the url to the site as well so I can look around?

things like that that will help me troubleshoot.

If any info is sensative send me a PM..

,

That would be great.

I am sure you know that many virus that are sent via email have the same property. (double extension). The code can be executed even though Windows identifies them as simple text files etc.

Thanks again

, ASPProtect 7 Customization Service

As some people seem to have a lot of trouble editing ASP code I am currently willing to consider doing ASP Programming custimization work to the registration pages/database as well as the admin area of ASPProtect Version 7.

things like drop down lists, yes/no fields, new database fields, edit screen additions... etc etc

things that might take an ASP novice forever but I could do in reasonable time.

PM me detailed specs on what you want and will then provide a quote if interested. I get paid via PayPal ahead of time and am charging 40/hour for my time which is a discounted rate. (partially since I am so familiar with the application and partially because you have made a purchase from CJWSoft)

So to be very clear...

You tell me exactly what you want in detail, If I agree and you like the price quote, I get paid, I write the code, you get the code, I fix any minor bugs or errors if I made if any, and everyone is happy. That's the deal.

Pain in the ass people or people not willing to spend money for quality work done quickly need not contact me. I get enough of that as it is and my time is valuable. I also may refuse a job if I don't have time or just don't want to do the work involved. Really how well you describe what you want and the intelligence level vibe I get from you has a lot to do with whether I will do the job or not.,

The parent paths things really should not be an issue.

This is an article from the troubleshooting section of the documentation that takes care of it all very easily.

As for a good host that knows ASP and does not mess around when you ask for something. I always recommened www.alentus.com

,
I would like to delete the SQL tables and set them up from scratch using enterprise manager and sql query manager and see what happens

If that is ok with you let me know.

Something is wrong like I said...  almost seems like the database is caching old password info from the field.
Sure go ahead

,

here is the answer
http://www.iisanswers.com/IIS51.htm

CDONTS

CDONTS (Colloaborative Data Objects for NT Server) is a feature of NT and W2K that allows you to easily send mail from a web page using the SMTP server. The simplicity of the code and widespread availability of free scripts employing CDONTS has resulted in  CDONTS being widely adopted.

Quite a surprise to many administrators to discover that IIS 5.1 does not support CDONTS as do IIS 4.0 and IIS 5.0. This has been replaced by CDOSYS which appears to have more capability, but it is not quite as simple to use. See: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q195 683 for more details.

You can enable CDONTS on XP by copying CDONTS.DLL from a Windows 2000 installation to your XP system’s Windows\System32 folder (default name). Then at command prompt Windows\System32 run REGSRV32 CDONTS.DLL. The extent of my testing on this was to deliver one piece of mail, so this should not be construed as a complete analysis of the effectiveness of this technique.

cwilliams38392.8260300926,

Hello,

1.)

I dont really have any ideas about the japanese characters. I also don't have any ideas about changing settings in the database. Your going to have to do some research on all of that.

Perhaps try pasting the text into a text document 1st.. then copy/paste them into the application. Perhaps that will eliminate any unseen weird characters. I do it sometimes when pasting things from word to my html editors and it works great.

2.)

I dont/cant support custimization to the code but here are some tips to get you started.

edit "items_inc.asp" carefully with a text editor
(back it up before you begin so you can revert back)

change this anywhere you see it

?SORTBY=Name

to

?SORTBY=Name+Asc

or

?SORTBY=Name+Desc

Expiriment to see which gives you the desired sorting.
Do the same process for the price.
The + Sign just passes a "space" back to the page in the proper format if you are wondering.

3.)

The items for page setting is easy. Just go to the settings page when logged in as the admin. Edit this field.   "ResultPageSize"

cwilliams38157.5340277778,

Something very strange is happening.  Some users can't see the classified ads in their browser.  This is specific to the user's computer, and they can check other computers and see it fine.

In each case, the user is using windows explorer 6.0 browser with windows xp.

they can't see the ads listed on the ads page, but they can see the categories.

also, they can't see the place ad link on some pages.

Do you think that their browser is blocking the javascript for the mouseover message?

thanks.

, Best setup I recomend is just setting up a rig and making a workgroup. No real reason for a production machine to have any access to internal security when you think about it.

classic asp should be pretty easy to move, just set up new webs and dump the scripts in there. If you have 2 machines its always easier to look at the one while your building the other. Basically copy the setup and tada... the only thing you might need to remeber is components (if your using any) and thats usually not a very big deal either.

Point sort of being at some point your going to have to change that thing around and while its no fun you have to imagine now is a better time to bite the bullet and get it set up the right way. Your alternative is to mess around for hours and hours praying that you change domain wide security to the point that running NET apps on that domain controller works. Personally I wouldnt sleep well knowing I had just messed around so bad with the OS that I had no clue what bugs and security holes I might have accidently opened in the process. I wont even get into the possible things that might stop working on the rest of the domain if you fiddle with accounts like "Network Service"

Oh and if thats not enough reason to make you think about it, consider how hard it will be to try and rember what you did at 2AM 6 months from now if that machine takes a dive or some critical update undoes what you changed.

I feel for you though, trust me we have all been down that road once or twice. Get some sleep and in the AM the task at hand wont seem nearly as bad. You live and you learn, and you will definatly be WAY better off making things right sooner than later

, If you want to have a login form on a non protected page that posts
to a protected ".asp" page use code like this.

Change the action of the form to the page you want them to log into.
Make sure the page you send them to is protected by the "check_user_inc.asp" file.

,

This issue came up once before and when I investigated I could find no error in the html that aspprotect generates and those files do exist where they are supposed to. We concluded it was a parsing error from the log file system.

There just really isn't anything I can do about it. I spent a week trying to figure it out. It is just the log parser screwing up under certain circumstances where there is no reason anything is wrong. They have trouble dealing with some of the complex URL/querystrings that the ASPProtect admin area uses. They think there is a 404 eror when there isn't... etc etc

,

yeah.. I cant say for sure.. as I have never really tried to get it working in xp pro.

Last time I actually used cdonts locally was on a 2000 box

I would do a google search on xp pro, smtp service, and cdonts and let us know what you find out.

All of our apps can use free 3rd part emailing components as well so maybe try some of those. Course you need a valid email server to connect to.

,

Chris,

2Checkout.com has added to their required cart parameters:

https://www.2checkout.com/documentation/newparameters.html

Do you have a version of 2checkout2.asp that will support these?

Thanks,

Nick

,

I am still a little confused... one thing I would like to mention is that the passwords in the aspprotect database are encrypted... meaning you cant just add a password to the user database by hand because it wont be the encrypted value and wont work.

It is something the application takes care of when you add a user via the web based interface.

You can however still add users manaully or with careful import/exporting... but you will have to use the existing password conversion technique which is covered at the end of our upgrade instructions in these forums.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo174-1.htm

Basically you want to add a field to the "ASPP_Users" table called "Old_Password" and that is where you enter the password in plain text. Then after you are finished adding users to the database manually you do this.

You want to run a special page via the browser.

http://www.mysite.com/password_admin/convert_to_encrypted.asp

Which will convert the passwords to the encrypted value for you.
See the bottom of this thread for all the info on that.
