Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 4:33:24 PM

I sent you a PM,

check the action for the button in the code... its probably not posting back the the right page which should the same page it is...

I bet ya it is posting to guestbook2 which is the wrong directory... an old mistake I forgot to correct...

cwilliams38310.6540046296,

That worked...but when I tried importing the test user, the password was imported in an add formated...like it was encrypted, and I can't log in using the User ID that I imported.,

no, its part the concurrent login checking system.

currently when that is on logging off does not come into play..
(pretty much because it is such a complex system I wasnt able to make it quite that intelligent this time around)

when concurrent login checking is enabled the only way to log in again at another system with the same username and with a different IP is to wait till that time period is over

sorry

as you may recall it was rush feature at the last moment before I got version 7 finished. Hopefully I can improve on the feature in the next version but I dont really see it as being a big issue at the moment. Sometimes when you want maximum security you have to make some tradeoffs and that is why the feature is optional.

,

I would say that it isn't all that difficult using mySQL for the backend....the main thing is to make sure you set the primary keys for auto-incrementing in your database.  Alos need to make sure that any DELETE SQL statements are formatted like this

DELETE FROM tblName WHERE tblField=SomeValue

and not

DELETE * FROM tblName WHERE tblField=SomeValue

The same holds true for using MSSQL

,
I would like to delete the SQL tables and set them up from scratch using enterprise manager and sql query manager and see what happens

If that is ok with you let me know.

Something is wrong like I said...  almost seems like the database is caching old password info from the field.
Sure go ahead

,
I was actually able to do similar thing by allowing our dedicated search engine to access the site unchallanged.

<%
If Trim(Left(Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_USER_AGENT"),11)) = "MYPASSWORD" Then
 SearchFlag = True
End If

If SearchFlag <> True Then
If Session("Access_Level") > CHECKFOR or Session("Access_Level") = "" Then
%>
<!--#include virtual="/Auth/check_user_Code.asp" -->
<head>
<title>My Title</title>

</head>

<body>

My Protected stuff here

</body>

</html>

For this to work, the search engine must pass the PW to the web site. I just was not sure how to do the same thing with IPs. I will play with the code and see what happens. If it works, I will post it here to help others, if this is OK with forum rules.

Thanks,

Mo
I just added couple of lines and it works fine

If (Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR")) = "xxx.xx.xxx.xxx" Then
 ' Session("PasswordAccess") = "Yes"
 SearchFlag = true
End If

,

I am successfully using ASP protect on our site. I have one question:

The file Check_user_inc.asp looks a bit bland as I can't seem to use the sites Dreamweaver template. If I apply a template to this page, it is duplicated on other pages with this template.

How can I apply a template to this page?

Thanks

Clark

,

Just to put an end to this thread here is the solution for anyone reading.

The permissions were ok.

The data connection string never got edited in the "dataconn_inc.asp" file so it was invalid the whole time.

Once that was corrected the application ran.

So really this whole thread was over not following the directions and not editing the data connection string...

, ok thanks, Thats what I needed.  Thank you!,

The only reason no one else asked this many questions is possibly because they didnt NEED the functions i am TRYING to do.

We offer tech support for installation of the base application purchased in it's native form.  In other words were not planning on spending weeks holding your hand and teaching you how to build your application or modify the one you bought. Not because anyone wants to make it hard on you but because there is a practically infinite number of things someone could be trying to do and the only way to give you the exact answer would pretty much involve either writing it for you or having a look at your code to see what the heck your doing. Sorry but my time isn’t cheap nor do I have a lot to spare. I already gave you my approach on what to do and what you should be looking at but obviously you’re not catching on. SO ONCE AGAIN, PLEASE LOOK AT THE SOURCE CODE AND DECIDE HOW YOU WANT TO HANDLE YOUR END OF THINGS BASED ON HOW THE APP DOES ITS THING. I really don’t know how I can be more clear that that. I don’t have a crystal ball that can tell me where you’re going with your own code, what the final requirements are... what field you want to add or remove for the database etc. There is a demo up that everyone can look at and play with so they can get a feel for how the things behave and look. It’s not my fault your naivety led you to believe you could do anything with it in ten seconds. I mean if I just add some wings to my car maybe it will fly, and if you just add a shopping cart and a few products maybe you can start your own Amazon.com with that software right? Sounds good to me…

It would take me longer to re-write YOUR code than it would to have LEARNED ASP.NET and made MY OWN.

Well thats one thing we both agree on, I bet it would take you a long time to rewrite the code when you dont know how to write it in the first place. By you own admission you dont know enough about what your doing to be messing with a .NET app at this point. Maybe you should take your own advice and LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT IT. What’s even worse is that application isnt even complicated, its 101 stuff honestly. One class, thats it! Your not looking at thousands and thousands of them that you will have to read and comprehend. If you can actually “read” the code we kept it lean and mean and to the point. Nothing strange or random, no references to a zillion things all sprinkled here and there. Its reads like a book if you know the language. That’s why developers buy these apps all the time. Not because they couldn’t write one themselves, but because they know their time is valuable as well and for $150 which is less than most get paid an hour they couldn’t be bothered. Furthermore we both spend a lot of time making sure these apps are "dumbed down" so that the average programmer without a lot of object oriented background can pick up the coding style tweak it if they need to. Some people do modify things to suite their needs and others are happy with our apps "as is".

Just to recap we already wasted two days yappin about your jacked up servers and after you went through THREE of them and finally got one working you said the code was working. Red lights started flashing in my office by the time you got to the second screwed up machine, but hey weird things happen so at that point I wasn’t 100% concerned. Technically we could have and possible should have cut you off there as the policy in place is pretty clear about us not being your tech support crew when it comes to getting your machine working properly (especially one we cant even look at). Go check those posts again both Chris and I were answering your questions and being as helpful as anyone could possibly expect.

Several more days have been spent answering questions about how to modify your application and again that’s not our responsibility and we don’t support modified versions of the software for all the reasons that should be obvious. No software company does and if I have to explain why that is well this conversation is beyond hope.

Bottom line is the responsibility to support that application ends the moment you get it running the way it was shipped. Were pretty damn decent about going above and beyond and a lot of the time we go into things we shouldn’t have to. If you have well thought out and specific questions by all means ask, this isn’t some sort of thanks for your money now get lost operation. CJWSoft has been around since the beginning of Microsoft’s entrance into the web application market. We have thousands and thousands of happy customers because we are developers and enjoy working with other developers along the way.

You’re not the first N0oB to show up, but you’re the first one I can think of that ever tried to tell us we didn’t write the apps we sell and essentially wanted to argue that we don’t know what were talking about. Meanwhile you should have been done with your thing days and days and days ago, not in here yapping off and showing your ignorance to the other developers that regularly browse these forums. You trying to tell me how CafePress works is a joke, I happened to have been part of the team that worked on the first few revisions of that site and again you really didn’t even understand what I was getting at in that last post. LINK TO LOGIN PAGE not link to every protected page on the site.

If you think I am pissed off at you, your wrong. I'm just irritated with the whining about this and that and rather than admit your over your head you come back with half baked remarks that only make sense to you. If you think you can google a few terms and come back here talking smack like you’re actually someone that knows what you’re talking about your just making a fool of yourself. You sound like a guy from China trying to tell me how to speak English... My advice is get a few books and start learning or try actually reading up and listening to the other bazillion knowledgeable developers out there that do a great job posting articles about the subject. You might just learn something and actually get your project finished before 2010 and when you do please come back and re-read your posts with "enlightened eyes" so you can see what a goofball you are for saying half of the things you have said. I am not in the mood to keep helping you get your project done step by step. I have huge projects of my own going on and if I thought you could actually provide a descent project specification I might offer to make the changes for you at a serious discount so you could go away and everyone would be happy. Problem is I dont get the feeling you could explain your way out of a paper bag let alone provide a group of programmer the techinal specs for your project.

Your best bet is to post a link to the start of this thread at www.AngryCoder.com I'm sure a  few of  people over there would be more than willing to give you a ton of usefull advice

Google 4GuysFromRolla… a great resource site with example, just dont come back here  telling me those guys/ladies posted things that dont work either.

Chris has written hundreds of articles on PowerASP, a great place to start looking as well… www.powerasp.com I've been spitting out code for longer than I can remeber and I still look thing up on this site because its LOADED with great info. That happens to be one of the very first ASP sites that went up on the net so lets just say he knows a bit or two about the subject.

I'm sure your frusturated but your pushing your luck seriously. 38 posts about this subject in a week and your over there hacking away on your virus infested WaReZ machine which isnt exactally the ideal development rig. I mean we provide the code and your supposed to provide at the least a very basic knowlege of what your doing and a production grade platform to test it out on. To me thats like buying a car and then asking how to drive it... then bugging the dealer to teach you and when you smash the thing complaining because no one told you that your not supposed to drive into a wall. I have the same policy as the dealer, show me something wrong with the car from the factory and we will fix it for you NO QUESTIONS at all with our appoligies, but really once you take it off the lot what you do with it is your deal and its not our responsability in the least.

Chris -

Long time no talk, which is a good thing.  I have purchased another product from you, ASPVendor.  I am running into an issues.

When I try and remove the image through the image manager, it does not remove it.  Screen shot attached.

Thanks

,

It happens at least once per hour or every time a banner is edited in the system by the admin.

Changing its frequency would be somewhat complicated. You'll have to make changes to the code in a few places and you will effect performance adversely by doing it more often as it will mean a lot more database queries which defeats the purpose of doing it once per hour to conserve resources. The reason is when you change the frequency of that you also change the frequency of the entire banner application variable caching system. It difficult to explain but it unlike most banner systems out there it basically fetches banner rotation info every so often instead of every single time your page needs a banner. It stores this rotation and cycling information in ultra fast application variables. The docs actually go over a little bit of how that process actually functions under "using the system / Setting Up Banners
"

Its a customization I just can not support and I do not recommend doing, but if you really want to you should look at the "aspbanner_inc.asp" file

this is the part that makes it happen at least once per hour (requires visitors to your site to happen obviously)... you'd have to cleverly recode it to work slightly more often

' Checks the time the banner data was last updated and basically updates it if an hour or more has passed
If Cint(Application("BannersLastUpdated")) <> Cint(Hour(time)) Then
%>
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="appinfo_inc.asp"-->
<%
End If

There may be more to changing this than that, but this is all I can tell you.

cwilliams38441.6427083333, I'm in the process of incorporating the ASP Gallery functionality within my current site design.

To begin this process I'm taking each page and I'm wrapping the ASP Gallery code with my site design [essentially I'm allocating this application the center of the page].  When I pull in the default.asp into the site the contents of this page make the entire page too wide.  I can't see where ASP Gallery assigns itself a width.

I'm working on this as a side project so I'm not terribly far along since I need to change all of the font assignments within the system to style assignments and it's a slow go.

Any insight would be a great help, there's a lot of re-write in what I'm doing and i don't want to affect functionality.

if you want to see the page and what happens -- http://www.iphotosite.com/galleryapp/default.asp

Don't go to www.iphotosite.com because I havent moved it to its own location yet.

,

I was told by my ISP to use localhost and it should work and it does not. It does not require authentication to send e-mails.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

, Can I copy the file into the export folder and then the import user function?,

I think I've found the problem..

The password "abcdefgh" works

The password "abcdefghi" does not

(username "ace45")

Passwords can obviously only contain up to and including 8 characters... By some coincidence I only used short passwords with MS Access.

, ok,

Anyone have any experience configuring PhotoGallery to use a backend mySQL database?

The application connects successfully for Read operations, but no amount of troubleshooting can get it to Write records to the tables.

http://www.marc-lisa.com/photos/default.asp

,

check permissions for the user you are connecting to the SQL database.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo122-1.htm

That user may not have permission to make new data

Also,  check all field and table settings manually by comparing them to the SQL creation script we provide. You may very well be missing auto increment and primary keys which would make adding new data not work.

It is most likely one of those two things.

,

OK, well, that error is pretty self explanatory really. There isn't anything else it could mean.

What you showed me in that screen shot all looked correct, but still permissions to that file just can't be correct. The paths are correct. The path to the file looks correct. The ASPNET (ASP.NET) account looks correct.

I would try settings permissions directly on that XML file. Perhaps child permissions did not go through the way you intended. (the advanced tab must be used for that) If that doesn't work try giving ASPNET and Everyone full permissions on the file directly.

Possibly check the paths in the web.config file just for the heck of it.

Last case scenario, you can edit that XML file directly instead of using the screens in the application. Of course if that file does not have correct permission chances are other things like log files will give you issues as well.

That is all I can think of right now.

, Very weird for sure but I guarantee no code in ASPProtect is deleting that folder. Something else is going on the server and deleting it and I have no idea what it would be.

Maybe try leaving a blank text file in it and see if the folder disappears after a few days.,

Hello,

You'll need to find a validation function to test for it.
Either server side or right in the form via client side javascript.

I dont have any experience with validating zip codes here much less UK.

Google it would be my best advice.. or maybe find some free app written in UK format and see how they did it.

Good Luck..

And if ya find anything post it here if ya like

cwilliams38381.5607638889,

Thanks for that. The upload size is just as effective and possibly a better solution to maintain server space.

What about individual gallery permissions. So only 1 member can post in only 1 gallery. I have a forum of 500 plus members so if they want to add a gallery than setting a permission would be idea for each gallery.

,

Hi

I downloaded the .chm format installation documentation but when I open it I get the index but can't see any of the pages so am a bit stuck.

,

one last thing... if you did an upgrade from a previous version and didnt do the whole database field thing right during the upgrade process as stated here you could have trouble.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo174-1.htm

Meaning you should check your new database with the field structure of an unmodified new database and make sure all field names match up perfectly.. especially paying attention to the username and password fields

One last thing..
If you did an import via text file and didn't import all the fields ASPProtect needs you could possibly have problems as well.. though I don't think this relates to the timeout so it probably is not the case

,

When did you download the ASPProtect Version 7 zip file ?

what did you enter as a wrong password to make that happen ?

does it it do it when other wrong passwords are entered ?

cwilliams38452.722037037, You shouldn't be renaming or moving anything... unless you really really understand what you are doing and are at an expert level expert as far as ASP coding goes.

like I said earlier..
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=354&ge t=last#1130

redirecting with version 6 is not supported but this thread tells you exactly how to set it up (I showed you this thread in an that earlier post)

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=17&KW= redirect

This thread below may also help in case the page you want to start on with a login form should not be password protected..

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo18-2.htm , Actually quite well.  I have this problem worked out and it actually isn't to bad.  But  now I am getting some strange error messages.  I will start another post.

Cheers
Roy

, I am not talking about image resizing. I need to know if it is possible to limit the upload to images where their height or width is less than 500 PIX. ,

yeah.. thats an old graphic probably only seen in a few places.

it is not on the main site

but I am sure there are a couple of pages left over still using it like the aspvendor and asplistings pages.. etc    I am aware of it, just been too busy to go change them and I didn't consider it a big deal

2003 servers are NT based anyway

, When a logged in user with specific group rights tries to look at a page that has different group membership requirements the Login screen comes up giving them an opportunity to login with different rights to view the page.  If you log in again with your current user name the same login screen returns with the added words something to the effect of "Access Denied, you dont have group rights to this page...".

The only way to get back to the previous page is to hit the back button on the browser (there is not a back button on the denied page).

I would really rather not even present the "login again" screen to a user but just have a custom page that says "access denied" of my own design with a back button on it.  Is this an option provided for in ASPProtect currently?  I did not see it in the admin section settings tab.  Is there a separate "login again" asp file that is being used for this group access deny message that I could alter, or does it always have to be the login asp file?
Or would this require me modifying the check_user_inc.asp file around line 356 to change this behavior (I don't want to screw up any other stuff though...).

Thanks!!

Oh, PS.  just a quick check...it looks like if a user is an "admin" he automatically gets to see all group pages regardless of which set of group numbers are assigned in his user account...is that right?

,
Every application we sell that has a password on the database uses "temp"

Also, the password is in the connection string in the dataconn_inc.asp file.

After all, the ASP code needs to know the password just like anyone that wants to open the database would.
That i have, my question revolves around the all the users and passwords that I in that database. I need to be able to export that list to word for a mail merge list, but when I do the passwords show up encrypted. I need to be able to get an unencypted list.

thanks

, huh?  I think I just covered that as that is the way it must be done.,

I am using v7 with other software written in ASP.NET. When I include the the "checkfor" and include file, I'm receiving a compliation error.

Here is the include I have on the .aspx file:

Here is the error:

I need to use SQL for other reasons than efficiency.  If I create 2-seperate databases, would there be a lot of code to edit?

Thank you.

Thanks Chris.

Your solution worked!

Sorry you feel that way, not my intention. I'm not threatening anything. I was very happy you responded when did so there no reason for any bad feelings. I like your product as I said before and have no problems with it. Sorry again, that was not my intention. Merry Christmas…
