A very common and extremely bothersome error encountered when running ASP apps that connect to a database is the "80004005" error. It comes in many varieties.

These articles cover it.

cwilliams38102.4447222222, (customer replied aug-sep 2005)

OK, you have old code then... I will send you some updated files that you can try.. let me know here if it solves the problem. ,

OMFG,

Your probably talking about "Session.Timeout" which is a feature of the IIS webserver. Please do a google search on it for more information.

In the meatime if you look at the top of the "check_user_inc.asp" file you should see a section like this where you can try to change the value.

' Minutes you want before the session times out.
' This is set on the server to be default to 15 or 20 minutes depending on the server version
' You can change it there or override it here.
Session.Timeout = 30

Specifying it like that is supposed to overwrite the value for your web in the IIS console which is usualy 20 minutes.

,

I would kile to see more support for the groups function:

1. on the password_admin/default.asp page have a coulmn listing groups

2. ability to change groups in bulk eg change the expiry date for all group x members

Cheers

, Yes, you are right.  That was the problem.  Sorry

Cheers

Hi,

Sorry, but the way the system works you can not call an individual banner like that. It just not something the system was meant to do.

If you wanted a specific banner to show up at all times you would have to make an individual banner and a zone just for that.

After looking at your site since you have so many banners there I dont know if that is the greatest option for you. It would also put a lot of stress of the Version 7 software because it is not really meant to call so many banners zones at one time on one page.

If you could live with tracking clicks on the home page but not displays I would suggest making banners for the home page in one zone. Then hard coding the banner images into your homepage like you already do but linking to the tracking part of aspbanner instead of where they would usually link to. That way you could at least track clicks and there owuld be no performance issues.

for example.. one of the images might link to
http://www.poconocommuter.com/aspbanner/banner_redirect.asp? Banner_ID=4

which would track clicks for you.. and then send then wherever they are supposed to go

Different Versions of the Access Database

Below is a zip file with many alternate versions of the Access Database provided to help with installation and general usage.

2005-02-20_155310_ASPProtect_Database_Versions.zip

ASPProtect.mdb is saved as an Access97 database (password "temp")
ASPProtect_access2000.mdb is saved as and Access 2000 database (password "temp")
ASPProtect_access2000.mdb is saved as and Access 2002-2003 database (password "temp")
ASPProtect_access2002_no_password.mdb is saved as and Access 2002-2003 database with no password set on it

Try to use the newest version as server odbc drivers sometimes have to use the newest version for everything to work correctly. No password version is provided because sometimes there are issues connecting to a database with a password set on it.

Default username for access databases is of course "admin" but you really dont use that except in the data connection information.

cwilliams38403.6840277778,

humm, yea thats a data connection error..
really not related to the asp code in the application for the most part.

that is low level

If using MSACCESS

I would make sure permissions are set correctly on the database folder (not just the database file itself)

I would make sure your using at least a 2000 version of the database. 2003-2003 format being better..

I would make sure the server has up to date mdac/odbc drivers.. (that is really the server admins responsibility)

As for permissions there are articles in our forums about exactly how they need to be set. Improper permissions can cause a ton of random errors like that.

cwilliams38414.6528240741, You can not edit that code with dreamweaver. It will re-arrange the asp and kill it.
If you want to change the look of the login html you have to edit the html by hand in a text editor.

Or create what you want on a blank page using your editor of choice and carefully use parts of that in the ASPProtect code.

In version 7 the login screen is one asp page by itself and is much easier to edit with just about any editor. In version 6 you have to know your html and be careful.

Either way I am not sure templates are a good idea for something like that. That sort of thing tends to cause problems with dynamic code that executes under different directory levels. You want to stick to regular html techniques. , You are right.
I have SQL server.
From August to today I have used a very simple login system and now I come back to you for better.
I can insert, edit, delete  users but it happens what I mentioned in my first message.
,

Whein I went by the numbers off of your directions, which work well up to that point, the import would time out.

At that point I tried to import directly into access...and then it hung trying to login.

okay so I've put in a clean database and created a new record for me as admin.

, Chris,

D'oh! How completely obvious!

I got it now. (In Step 4, by the way, you need to click on the web site, not the directory. The directory has its own Properties menu, which is competely different than the Properties menu for the web site.)

 Thanks for the fast response!

  Robert

,

LOL

, ok, I got it all sorted out for you and aspupload seems to be working now.

Basically they seem to have an odd version of it installed and I had to tweak the code a little. I also uploaded the server info page in the admin area to test for it.

Just back up the gallery folder so you have a backup copy of the modified code.

CJW ,

I am having an issue with the Thumbnailing process. My host does not support ASPImage so I have to use something called asp thumbnailer which is similar to ASPImage. I am trying to modify the Dundas upload to automatically reduce the images to create thumbnails. I ripped out the asp image code and replaced with the bottom. The main issue I believe is grabbing the image files. I am not sure how to name the actual image file that is already uploaded by the dundas upload. the code is below:

The peices in red are where the issue is I believe. What you see below is my attempt to identify the exact image and then rename it tthumbnail. My optimal solution would be to take the picture, resize it and rename it exactly what it was named before.

Any ideas

Thanks

User Information

After a user logs in there are variables that you can always access.
They can be used to check various things or to display information
dynamically based on who has logged into the system.

   Session("PasswordAccess")
   Session("Access_Level")
   Session("Admin")
   Session("Active")
   Session("Expiration_Date")
   Session("User_ID")
   Session("Groups")
   Session("Redirection_URL")
   Session("Password")
   Session("Username")
   Session("First_Name")

Session("Last_Name")

Session("Company_Name")
   Session("Email")

Session("Address")

Session("City")

Session("State_Province")

Session("Zipcode_Postal_Code")

Session("Phone")
   Session("Custom1")

Session("Custom2")

Session("Custom3")

Session("Custom4")

Session("Custom5")

Session("Custom6")

You can display them on a page at any time using Response.Write like so

<% Response.Write(Session("FIRST_NAME")) %>

or like this

<% = Session("LAST_NAME") %>

cwilliams38419.533900463,

Hi,

Sorry, but if  ".asp" pages download instead of run on a server then that means ASP is not working on the server and is not configured correctly. That is about as low level as it gets and it is really the hosting companie's responsibilty to sort that one out.

It is totally a system admininister's job to make sure that sort of thing is working. If this place supports ASP they really need to fix that for you. There really is nothing  I can do for you until ".asp" pages at least run.

As for the Free install... that is no problem. Of course you need to get the hosting company to fix the web before I can be of any help. There is more to that problem then permissions.

For starters I would make a simple ".asp" page with hardly anything it (even some simple html text is fine) and ask them why it is downloading instead of executing and to please fix things.

,

in the version you have changing it is not something we covered

I believe you will find it the "config_inc.asp" file in the root though... be careful with naming it though because if you use any spaces or weird characters it might cause issues with various functions in the application like emailing.. I recommend just using letter, numbers, and maybe dashes

,

Chris: You are right about a little extra coding to make it work. I am still learning .ASP coding, so I did a little web searching and used IF THEN statments to confirm a member logged in with a valid Access Code. If valid, the protected page executes, with the Member's Name and Access Level on a single line at the top of that page. Looks sharp! If not logged in, or a non member (who found the page via Google), I used a Redirect to send s/he to a login page with optional links as you suggested (http://www.vspa.com/aspprotect/vspa-password-failed.asp) . I couldn't get it to work when using Group Access, but I am sure that is just because I am a novice at .ASP (I will post that example when I figure it out). Meanwhile, here's the code I used that works:

<%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="dataconn_inc.asp"-->
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"-->
<!--#INCLUDE FILE="config_inc.asp"-->
<% =Session("First_Name") %>&nbsp;<% =Session("Last_Name") %>:
<%
If Session("Access_Level") = "6"  Then
Response.Write "VSPA Active Member Access Level 6"
 End If
If Session("Access_Level") = "7" Then
Response.Write "VSPA Life Member Access Level 7"
 End If
If Session("Access_Level") = "8" Then
    Response.Write "VSPA Officer/Staff Access Level 8"
 End If
If Session("Access_Level") < "6" Then
Response.Write "Access Level 1-6 NOT AUTHORIZED RESTRICTED AREA ACCESS"
    Response.Redirect("vspa-password-failed.asp")
End If
%><!-- http://www.vspa.com/aspprotect/vspa-password-enter.asp -->
<!-- *** End ASPProtect Code *** -->
<html>
<head>

,

Now that I think about you may very well be able to use the existing login_form_inc.asp page

the header and footer files for the users area may be ok as well.

probably the smart thing to do is try your old ones and compare them to the new and see if everything you need is there. If not add it by looking at the source html and comparing.

All other files should definetly be replaced with the new.

,

rrabago

I have been looking over the code and also doing some tests.

So far everything in the code looks correct and everything I have tried has worked correctly. If I select an access level and active users it is not sending emails to inactive users as you stated.

Are you using the option pack ?

cwilliams38103.9618402778,

Okay, this also shows at the bottom of the import/export page

I've got the IUSR account with modify permissions on this data folder as well.  Is the "this directory needs change permission" line just a general reminder?

Files are being stored in "D:\missourirealtor.org\members\aspprotect\data\export\\"

This directory needs change permissions for the anonymouse webserver account.
Those permissions can only be set by your hosting company.
These features will not work without those permissions being set.

, You know what, you really are frigin goofy to say you might think we didn't write the software. I got source code to the license dll as well as about 12 revisions of the application sitting on my development server as well as about 1200 emails between John & Myself as we worked on it. Not to mention all those .vb files that come with the application. What do you think those are ? I bet you don't even really know based on something you said in one of your earlier forum posts.

Did you even read this cause this is YOU... !!!
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo234-1.htm
And we say right on the ASPProtect.NET product page to read that article before making a purchase.

Moving on... it basically says on the site ASPProtect.NET works the way it is shown to work. You can use it that way or you can further edit the code with Visual Studio.NET. If you are so good with asp.net then you should be editing the code to work differently or writing your own authentication that works exactly how you want it to. End of story. You keep arguing about things your done... you are so done !!! I won't keep putting up with you.,

ya, thats basically what I was gonna do..

BTW.. if that other app is going crazy with an access database it could be the cause of all the slowdown with ASPProtect... what happens there is it is using so much database driver time that it robs other things that also access a database... so basically ASPProtect isn't asking its database for much but your other application and database are cripping that part of the system and causing it to run like crapola

If your other app is using a system dsn try changing it to use a dsn-less connection... it might actually help

,

Hello,

My guess your having trouble setting up a system dsn because the database has a password set on it. Your hosting company most likely sets up DSNs without using the advanced tab which is where the authentication information goes. Or they have some sort of web interface for the customers to use that doesn’t allow setting up that information.System DSN’s are actually difficult to set up correctly when the database has a password on it. There is of course a password on the database for security reasons so if someone ever downloads it somehow they will not get your information.

System DSN’s are not the way to go regardless as you will see mentioned at our support site.

http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9&P N=1

You really should try setting up a DSN-less connection. It is the best way to go. They are easier to set up, perform better, and are less load on the server. Any host that wants it customers to use system dsn’s is not on the ball as far as server performance and server resource conservation goes. They are really asking for trouble down the road.

All you need to do to make dsn-less connection is the following.

Get permissions set for the folder the database is in (by your host)… then figure out the physical path on the server to the database by using server.mappath or you simply ask your host for the info.

An article I wrote on using server.mappath

http://www.powerasp.com/content/hintstips/physical-path.asp

Then your connection string will look something like this.. (of course you edit the path to match what server.mappath tells you. And you make sure the database name is correct)

ListingsConnectionString = "DBQ=C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\asplistings\_database\asplistings_ac cess2000.mdb;Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};UID=Admin;Password=temp"

Another option would be to simply remove the password from the database using MSACCESS.. then try to connect to it using a System DSN without the password. If your host is storing the databases outside of your web in the root of the server then removing the password on the database is not that bad of a thing to do as there is no way anyone will be able to dload it from your site. Of course there is a still a performace loss when using a system dsn with an Access Database

cwilliams38145.8540509259, Not the way it ships. You would have to add that functionality by editing the source code and database.,

I have been working on this all night long. I have been reading every possible article. I have created an ODBC connection on the server.. which i have never done before? Still nothing. I looked at the machine.config file... i read about impersonating whatever the hell that is... I am really stressed out. I have the 1.1 framework installed.

I read about dsn and dsn-less connections. Is there another way i can connect to the database? Without using a username and pw maybe?

, I have multiple zone banners displayed on a single page using the AspHTTP Component Method.

However, in IE 6.x and NS 7.x each banner has some text displayed before it similar to:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0 Date: Fri, 17 Sep 2004 07:15:12 GMT MicrosoftOfficeWebServer: 5.0_Pub Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Length: 229 Content-Type: text/html Set-Cookie: ASPSESSIONIDAASSDQBA=HAICCGCANEBEPANCDHLHJJGC; path=/ Cache-control: private

This text does not appear when using Netscape 4.x cwilliams38325.741099537, I would like to change this file name to the typical Login.aspx, how to do this? I have a VS 2003 but need instrutions if that's the route to go., That worked...but when I tried importing the test user, the password was imported in an add formated...like it was encrypted, and I can't log in using the User ID that I imported.,

How can I make so it goes to certain webpages if user enters valid username and password??

I suppose user enters its information on check_user_inc.asp page, and username and password are stored on SQL database.

Thanks

,

Some of our users complained that their users id and passwords are sent in the clear. So we decided to invest in an SSL certificate from Verisign. It has been tested fine with all forms and pages in ASPProtect version 6. The only remaining page which I am not sure how to protect is the home page. Let's say my home page is http://www.MyDomain.com/index.asp. When the user goes to this link he/she will be presented with the check_user_inc.asp page so he/she can enter their ID and PW. So how to make the login information send from this page thru HTTPS?

, Oh, to clarify the above.  We did not change any columns in your [Users] database or any other table., One month later, things are running very smoothly. Color me "satisfied customer"! ,

UPDATE

Version 8.1 has code generators for these new methods built in...

Gignutyi38368.5403935185,

also.. the log out page shouldnt really need this
but you can try adding this to it where all the other ones are set to nothing..

cwilliams38341.7215046296,
I am having difficulty properly securing pdf's using 7.x
I used the example file and have been able to secure images and word docs, but the pdf's give users the error "There was an error opening this document. The file cannot be found."

The kicker -- it works fine on my computer, just not anyone else's. I put a link up to the same file without any security and that works on everyone's computer. The word file links and redirects work too. I've tried my log-in on other computers, then attempting to download the pdf and that doesn't work.

The client wants a site where users must register before downloading pdf's. They should be able to view all the pages without registering.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. But I can't complete the site until this issue is resolved.

Help appreciated.

,

do you have the smtp part of iis installed on your machine

cdonts needs that

then again I am not sure you can even use cdonts on a xp box without making some changes...

cdonts has kinds died out and as of windows 2000 basically got replaces by cdosys
