Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 4:52:37 PM

I just installed the software, but I can't find any place where I can see when users logged in, can someone please tell me where I can do this?

Thanks

,

It turns out that I never enabled ASP.net on the site. After doing that the skins work much better. I'll have to poke around and see what other functionality is now available.

Thanks!

Al

,

OK, I figured out the problem.  Not running ASP becasue the pages are not saved as ASP but rather HTM... OK so I am smart like a tractor but strong like an ox.

cwilliams38229.9128819444,

Running in parallel for testing is actually a smart way to do it, but the truth is you don't use anything from version 6 except the upgraded database (we have a tutorial on how to upgrade the database)

Version 7 was a drastic change /rewrite to all of the asp files that come with the application. So you will be starting out with fresh version 7 ".asp" files and folders... You will also find that once you get version 7 running that editing certain things like the look of the users area and the login screens is much easier to do.

That being said any of your own ".asp" pages that you protect use the same protection code they always did, so there will be no drastic changes needed there when you do finalize the upgrade.

If using MSACCESS as the database I suggest installing the application somewhere in your web and using a fresh ASPProtect 7 database. Once you are familiar with the setup and everything is working fine. Attempt the database conversion and when your done stick your converted database in there and see if everything is ok.

Also, if you already purchased the application download the latest version before doing the install. It's the same download URL. If you don't have it email me and I can hook you up. I have added some new features and fixed a couple minor things since it's release.

So far the feedback on version 7 has been awesome..

cwilliams38414.0133680556,

1st off, what application is this in reference too?
This question should be under that application's area in the forum.

2nd, really need more information and details. There are many ways and methods to send emails and they can all effect what gets delivered and what does not. All on an email server side of things. (I always recommend using the CDOSYS option using SMTP authentication with a real external email that has valid MX records) see my article...
http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/sending_email_cdosys.asp

3rd, your not telling me how many users we are talking about. ASP is not a very efficient way to send emails and extremely large amounts of users should be sent emails in a different way then from an asp application. It is just the nature of the technology being used. Some of different emailing methods the application supports may or may not give you better results. It is really best to experiment though honestly the option I mentioned above is always the best in my experience.

4th, if you are not getting a timeout or a scripting error than the ASP part of things is making it through the amount of users. You have to remember that often time emails that get sent out from web sites end up in junk filters for whatever reason. That is just another fact and why it it is usually best to send out serious newletters using a stand alone application like WorldCast or something.

I am doing a lot of guessing here because you really did not tell me much. I also still am not sure what application this is in reference to as 3 of my apps have newsletter features of sorts.

, you can edit the look of it but because it is licensed software the links to aspbanner and the aspbanner logo.. etc etc must remain  otherwise change it all you like.,

That is by design, removing and deleting are two different things as far as the classifieds system goes.

A regular user can only remove an ad from the category index. (which makes the ad inactive)

An admin however can truly delete an ad from the system.

,

one last thing... if you did an upgrade from a previous version and didnt do the whole database field thing right during the upgrade process as stated here you could have trouble.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo174-1.htm

Meaning you should check your new database with the field structure of an unmodified new database and make sure all field names match up perfectly.. especially paying attention to the username and password fields

One last thing..
If you did an import via text file and didn't import all the fields ASPProtect needs you could possibly have problems as well.. though I don't think this relates to the timeout so it probably is not the case

, Chris,

Well some good news! This from my hosting company this morning...

"
I'd say that the vendor is right so I've submitted a work order to
create the *****.com/aspnetprotect directory as an application.
If there are any other directories for which this needs to be done,
please let us know. This particular task always needs to be performed
by our staff.

If you need to follow up on this job with one of our on-line or phone
technicians, you can reference ticket id 11860.

With regards
"

Thanks for your help thus far

Andy
cwilliams38455.5654513889,

I assume you mean 500 pixels wide

no.. because you cant reliably tell a pictures image width without an image resizing component to look it up.. asp can not do things like that on its own

serverobjects has a free component called "imagesize" that can do it as well but you need access to the server to install the component
http://www.serverobjects.com/products.htm

so if you cant do that with regular asp code you definetly can not stop the upload proces because the picture is too wide..

heck, that would be nearly imposible to do regardless.. even with the best 3rd party components at your disposal

even with an image resizing component you would have to allow the upload.. then check the pixel width.. then delete it.. tell the user what is going on...etc etc  .. all a very complicated process

,

I would also double check that you changed the field size correctly and on the correct database that is being used in the connection string

,

Tell tell me some info about your install?

How am I supposed to know what is going on when you are not showing me what you have in your web config file and also the directory structure of the install or what you are putting in a page you are trying to protect ? It almost sounds like you are not editing the paths correctly in the various places.  I mean yes you told me something about the "map" folder but what I saying is tell me more detail.

BTW: this is a very important setting in the web.config file and must be edited accordingly so the path is right.

<forms name=".aspprotect~net" loginUrl="/aspprotectlogin.aspx" protection="All" timeout="60" path="/" />

Basically your showing me random errors and posts left and right and I honestly have no idea what your doing ?

Ulitmately though I am trying to help you in this situation like the web site says.

We offer tech support for installation of the base application purchased in it's native form. In some cases in order to receive proper tech support your application will be need to be installed on a live server on the Internet. We simply cannot troubleshoot all issues when the application is only installed on your local machine.

Meaning I am not going to keep this up if you keep asking question after question after question regardign your local XP Pro installation. There is only so much I can assume or guess when you are running this on a local development server. I know you got all sorts of problems getting a decent live server to run this on but that just isn't my problem. Get this up and running on a professionaly and correctly setup live server and when these random configuration errors pop up atl least I can go run the pages and look at them.
Right now I am just confused by nearly everything you have posted today. Half of looks like basic ASP.NET path issues that you need to sort of on your own based on where you installed the application on the machine and what you have in the web.config file.. etc etc etc

It is sounding more and more like ASP.NET is way over your head. If you want a copy of the classic ASP version of ASPProtect you are welcome to it. I think you will be a lotter better off sticking to classic ASP unless you really start reading up on ASP.NET and learning more about how forms based authentication and the web.config file work.

,

To be honest I just can't remember what happens. It has been a long time since I did a real live test of that. I know it seemed like a pretty smooth process to me. Right now I can not test it out as I am on a road trip with my motorcycle and I am sending this email from my PDA.

I would ask Dave at this website.
http://www.davephoenix.com/

Or via this username in the forums
PhoenixUK

He can tell you what happens as he has been using the IPN stuff for about a month now.

Perhaps another user could chime in here as well and let us know. I know there are a lot of people using the IPN stuff.

,  I moved the password check file out of /user and am getting this message:

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0400'

Expected statement

/asplog/check_user_inc.asp, line 404

End If
^
Is this a standard database connection error so I should ask my IIS to make sure permissions are correct?
Thanks..!
,

First pass through, I don't see anything changed in the groups section of the check_user asp file. the logoff asp wasn't touched.

I noticed the demo online (on this site) only has pages protected with access levels; you say it works fine with groups also?

,

Chris, I'm having problems getting this to work. When I plug in the redirect URL and then try to load the web page, the Flash ad never loads successfully - just its black background in the 468 x 60 space. Here's an example of what I'm seeing:

http://www.innovationtools.com/Articles/ArticleHeadlines.asp

Just keep refreshing the page until the black rectangle appears. And here is the code I've loaded for this flash ad:

<OBJECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"
 codebase=" http://active.macromedia.com/flash2/cabs/swflash.cab#version =4,0,0,0" ID=banner WIDTH="468" HEIGHT="60">
 <PARAM NAME=movie VALUE=" http://www.innovationtools.com/aspbanner/aspbanner/banner_re direct.asp?Banner_ID=25">
 <PARAM NAME=quality VALUE=high>
 <PARAM NAME=bgcolor VALUE=#000000>
 <embed src=" http://www.innovationtools.com/aspbanner/aspbanner/images/ba nners/mindmatters_innovation3.swf "
quality="high" bgcolor="#3CBDCD" WIDTH="468" HEIGHT="60" TYPE="application/x-shockwave-flash" PLUGINSPAGE=" http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Pr od_Version=ShockwaveFlash">
</OBJECT>

What am I doing wrong? By the way, I'm using the standard version of ASPBanner. Not sure of the version, but it dates from about 2002.

, one more problem I see...

I think your login box on the main page is missing the hidden form variable

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo169-1.htm, That is actually normal and supposed to be like that.
You have the current version.

ASPVendor is a VERY simple application meant to work with PayPal shopping cart that runs on their server. It is based off the ASPClassifieds core code. There is only one version and highly doubt there will ever be another., Chris,

D'oh! How completely obvious!

I got it now. (In Step 4, by the way, you need to click on the web site, not the directory. The directory has its own Properties menu, which is competely different than the Properties menu for the web site.)

 Thanks for the fast response!

  Robert

, Ok.. glad you got it working.,

Hi,

No, only ".asp" files can be protected.  It is the nature of Forms Based Authentication when using web based scripting technologies whether those scripts be ".cgi", ".asp", ".php", or whatever.

To protect entire direcotries at once you really need to run your own webserver and use NTFS permissions and user accounts..... or if something special is installed on the server there may be ways to do it as well. That usually isn't going to happen under a shared hosting account but there are special authentication products for such a thing that some hosting companies do purchase and allow their hosting customers to use.

Using aspprotect we do give working examples of ways to stream and partially protect images and downloads while a user is logged in to an ".asp" page.

Also, any ".htm" pages can simply be renamed to ".asp" if you need to protect them. Links to each other need to be updated of course because of the extension change.

In my opinion the truth of the matter is most high end sites use Forms Based Authentication with scripts. Not directory protection as it is fairly primitive/old school as well as sometimes being confusing for the users of the site because of how the login window from the server often gets stuck behind the browser.. etc etc

If you have a lot of pages in a site that you need to add protection code to then if can often be helpful to use a good Multiple file search and replace program to carefully add the protection code to the top of the source code of the pages. There are even multiple file search and replace programs that can rename extensions which can be helpful for large sites.

For images and graphics you want protect you have to do some work and set up and intelligent system for yourself.

Lastly whether you use https:// or not is no concern to ASPProtect as it works the same under https:// as it does under http://

,

(FREE) Nov 23 2005 Update Files

If you purchased ASPProtect Version 7.x before Nov 23 2005 then you can download these Update Files.

(These are non-critical updates.. only update if you want the described changes below)

These updates do the following..

  • Make the Tabs in the Admin area move up and down as you navigate around so they look more like tabs used in a file cabinet.
  • Updates the import/export process so the tab delimited text files created now store the passwords in plain text instead of encrypted. I have been thinking about this one for a while now and I think it is better this way as it was confusing a lot of people. If can also kill the whole process if by chance the encrypted output of a password contains a line break of sorts. There is no way to deal with that scenario so this is way the import/export process is going to work from now on. This also means you should be VERY carfeful about leaving export files lying around as they will have the passwords in them.
  • Updates the "expected_paths.asp" in the data folder because the paths it was generating had an extra "data/" in it.
  • Updates the users page so it will not show the import/export link if you have not entered a path for the export files in the settings.
  • Adds an Activity Tab if using the Activity Tracking features instead of the links it used to put on the users page that most people didn't see.

To install these just copy them in over the old files.

Now of course back up your existing files so can revert back if there is a problem or you do not like the changes. If you made any custom changes to any of your pages use your head and realize that copying these in over your existing files will overide any custom changes you made. (that is your business, I am just warning you)

2005-11-23_163025_ASPProtect_v7_11-23-2005_update.zip

, You can not edit that code with dreamweaver. It will re-arrange the asp and kill it.
If you want to change the look of the login html you have to edit the html by hand in a text editor.

Or create what you want on a blank page using your editor of choice and carefully use parts of that in the ASPProtect code.

In version 7 the login screen is one asp page by itself and is much easier to edit with just about any editor. In version 6 you have to know your html and be careful.

Either way I am not sure templates are a good idea for something like that. That sort of thing tends to cause problems with dynamic code that executes under different directory levels. You want to stick to regular html techniques. , The application is only intended for use with the way it comes.
Use of other currencies is not supported.
(this is noted on the product page)

However, it can probably be used fairly easily with UK customers.

You'll probably want to look into setting the currency to UK in the code generated for the PayPal buttons which is in "view_item.asp". There is probably a hidden form variable you add to it to specify the currency. PayPal's shopping cart documentation and help system would have more info on that.

Doing a search real quick there I came up with this.

<input type="hidden" name="currency_code" value="GBP">

Then you may also want to change the LCID settings for the web site to UK. (I think)

To do that edit the "config_inc.asp" file with a text editor.

Add this code between the <% and %> tags.
Near the top is good

Session.LCID = 2057

There may also be hard coded dollar signs in the code that you will need to change to whatever.. If after you do the above to steps you see then you'll know where to change them based on the named of the page you on.

It is quite possible that simply changing the LCID will take care of everything, but I am not sure.

Those are the tips I can give you. ,

this error really does not mean anything specific

Your browser must support a standard called RFC 1867. Please check with your browser vendor for support of this standard"

If you get an error its real weird that the file is being uploaded.
Generally if you get an error during upload it is because of one of these 3 things

Invalid physical path specified

Unsupported upload method chosen

Permissions

See my article on XP and permissions
http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/windows_xp_pro_and_permi ssions.asp

many people dont do their permissions right on XP Pro and that article covers everything

, if you are talking about IPN subscriptions and how they work paypal has detailed manauls on their site.. if you are talking about asp.net in general there are probably a lot of good books..

the reason I said look at the aspprotect 7 code is cause the applications and database are very similar and the same techniques will apply for the most part as far as how the ipn subscription posts from paypal talk to the database and what happens during the various post events.. etc etc etc , I have no idea to be honest, I just like the way it looks

Good deal on the remote install, just dont pull the old "hangman" move shutdown the machine on yourself around 4AM. Otherwise you be getting in the car and going for a drive LOL

, How about the option to add an unsubscribe link to the end of newsletters that are sent out and a function that will uncheck the newletter field for that record if they click on the link?

Please???

Thanks,
Michelle  ,

Sorry about earlier post in wrong area-

I have followed instructions to set up access levels (adding the

<% CHECKFOR = "4" %>    for user level 4 for instance.) The database is connecting properly and the basic check for login is taking place, but it seems that all users have access to all levels no matter what is on the database; i.e I set up a test page with "checkfor=4" and all users have access to it, even those with lower leve access.

Any ideas?

Thanks

,

Not really sure how to do this.... i think you know what i am looking to do.. is there anyway you can show me or create that solution for me? It would prob. take you minutes as its been taking me hours

, also, from looking at your site your ideal scenario would be a system that allows you to show all banners in one zone at any given time but in a different order.

ASPBanner is just not that sort of system. It is only designed to show one banner at a time from a given zone in random order.,

Two things you can do to test..

make sure there is at least one ".log" file in that directory.. then if you go to the log file screen and it does not show up in the list the physical path you are using is just not correct

remember the physcial path must contain a drive letter (sometimes a network path starting with // is ok if they have it setup as a network drive)

the other thing you can do is use this script to try and write a simple text file in the directory

http://www.devasp.com/samples/writetofile.asp

That will show you if permissions are correct

,

the following error message appears, but only when attempting to log off. all other parts of the program seem to be working.

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0xa04 Thread 0xa38 DBC 0x21ff024 Jet'.

,

Sounds great, Sold!

Thanks Christopher!

,

I wonder why the banners in ASPBanner 8.1 are moving from one place to another when opening my site www.helserevyen.no in a Mac Safari browser and click on refresh?

Can you take a look at my site and response?

,

Hope the wedding went well.  I have one this weekend.

I was successful at performing an upload.  The free upload software was either not configure properly (probably) or not working.  I downloaded the trial version of softartisan's upload (which is like over $300) and it started working.

Can more than one photo be uploaded at one time (like a whole folder full of photos) or does each have to be done individually?

,

humm.. their FAQ is interesting...it looks like some sort of .NET configuration issue regarding security policies like you mentioned

Thats one of the big problems with hosting .NET. Some hosting companies just do do some oddball things. ASPProtect.NET works under default conditions but when hosts go around locking things down to the max there is bound to be trouble. This is the 1st I have heard of this.

Now, ASPProtect.NET does use the "System.Data.OleDb" and "System.Data.Odbc" which your host says they block because they require full trust.

All I can really say at the moment is go with a hosting company like www.alentus.com or www.maximumasp.com that does not restrict your .NET abilities so much.

In the meantime I am going to ask John Evans what he thinks about this.

,

Whein I went by the numbers off of your directions, which work well up to that point, the import would time out.

At that point I tried to import directly into access...and then it hung trying to login.

okay so I've put in a clean database and created a new record for me as admin.
