Thought this would be easy. A few more pointers should get the database connection to work:
1) How do you decide whether it is a DSN (system datasource) or not? Does just putting the file in the ODBC make it so?
2)We have other files in there for other server applications, does that mean we’re stuck using DSN’s or is the file independent of that control dialog?
3) Assuming we get rid of using DSN for this database (or not), does the code go referenced in your article http://www.powerasp.com/content/hintstips/permissions.asp apply here or should it just work?
What else are we missing? , I do not think it it anything to do with the Application.
You most likely have some sort of ad blocking software that is doing it.
It is seeing the word "banner" or "ad" and blocking the images in your browser.
I doubt it is anything built into xp doing it. XP with SP2 has built in pop-up blockers but no ad blockers like that really. It is norton ad blocker or something of that nature. ,

After I had you install ASPProtect I added the ASP protecting code to the top of my home page:

Then I made my index.html page my login page buy using the script "Login form on a non protected page" on that I changed <form method="POST" action="memberarea.asp"> to <form method="POST" action="home.html">.
When I try to log on to that page I get en error page HTTP Error 405 - The HTTP verb used to access this page is not allowed. Internet Information Services (IIS). I checked with my hosting company GoDaddy.com and they informed me that due to the fact that they do not have ASPProtect instaled on there systems they can not support it. In recent conversations you told me that you have customers that do use godaddy and you products.
Can you please tell me what I can do to get this working?

I was successful at performing an upload. The free upload software was either not configure properly (probably) or not working. I downloaded the trial version of softartisan's upload (which is like over $300) and it started working.
Can more than one photo be uploaded at one time (like a whole folder full of photos) or does each have to be done individually? , I have accessed the "get_me_in.asp" page and entered the password encryption key. Once I entered it, I was taken to the ASPProtect Admin Area Login. It does not give me the option to create a new user as is described in the general installation documentation. How do I access the program now?, I will actually explain how to set access_levels and/or groups...

you can change the level or remove that line all together if you dont want one set
now for groups you would add this line in the same area

or

Groups access for a user is stored in one field in the database like you see above. If you are confused what you should be saving in that field I suggest simply setting a user to whatever groups you want via the admin area and then looking in the database to see what got saved in that field. It's pretty simple really how they are stored.

that user would be a member of groups 1,5, and 9 , there is no straight answer to a question like that..
I think my code is very easy to figure out and work with...
What your asking all depends on your skills and also what sort of payment processing system/merchant account you go with and what sort of ASP example code they provide you, Chris,
I have had a couple of users log out of the system as they are supposed to, move to another computer and not be allowed to login because of "they are currently logged in using another IP address" when in fact they logged off properly. Is there anything that they should be doing differently?

Jess , Can you incorporate a secure log in within the scripting. I would like the account information to be secure without having to have the whole site using running through a secure (https://) path. If this is possible, the scripting is perfect! , Two things you can do to test..
make sure there is at least one ".log" file in that directory.. then if you go to the log file screen and it does not show up in the list the physical path you are using is just not correct
remember the physcial path must contain a drive letter (sometimes a network path starting with // is ok if they have it setup as a network drive)
the other thing you can do is use this script to try and write a simple text file in the directory

, Whenever you are running software that can block scripts from certain things you are going to have issues like this.
I imagine many complex asp scripts you will download will do things like this as well.
A highly doubt it is anything to worry about regarding people that use your site.
ASP code delivers standard html to the browser... nothing weird goes on as far as that goes.
This system has been sold for 6 years and this is just not something to worry about. Trust me.. though you may want to tone down black ice so it doesn't give you issues as it tries to block various things.
If I were you I would do some google searches on black ice and issues with it blocking asp scripts.. etc etc
Now, if you are running black ice right on the server that a whole other story and something you as a server admin need to decide what to do about. I doubt that is the case as black ice is not probably suitable for a commercial webserver but I just thought I would throw that out there. , Hallo,

I mean, why bother making a group or access level for every user and worrying about keeping track of it all when you can just access the available session info about the user to create dynamic pages specific to that user.

That is why that information is there.
You can of course use some combination of the two technologies as well should you have groups of users that you want to have a slightly different experience. cwilliams38433.6259606481, ASPProtect v7.x has a new feature called groups.
Groups are meant as a replacement for using the access levels as they are much more powerful. Support for pages protected using access levels is left in tact for backward compatiability for a customer that was using them.
A customer recently told me groups could not be used like access levels and that 8 access levels was not enough. This is how I explained that groups can do everything access levels can do.
Groups can honestly do everything access levels can do if you really think about it.
Using groups and protecting pages accordingly you could actually create a system that basically worked identically to the way the access levels works.
For example..
You make 8 groups and assign users to them accordingly
Protection code on page allows access to groups 1-8
The aspprotect system generates this code for you…

and so on... I think you should get the picture by now , Its not a known issue.. I would try the original code before you made any changes and see if it still happens to you.

I dont know what is going on , It happens at least once per hour or every time a banner is edited in the system by the admin.
Changing its frequency would be somewhat complicated. You'll have to make changes to the code in a few places and you will effect performance adversely by doing it more often as it will mean a lot more database queries which defeats the purpose of doing it once per hour to conserve resources. The reason is when you change the frequency of that you also change the frequency of the entire banner application variable caching system. It difficult to explain but it unlike most banner systems out there it basically fetches banner rotation info every so often instead of every single time your page needs a banner. It stores this rotation and cycling information in ultra fast application variables. The docs actually go over a little bit of how that process actually functions under "using the system / Setting Up Banners

Its a customization I just can not support and I do not recommend doing, but if you really want to you should look at the "aspbanner_inc.asp" file
this is the part that makes it happen at least once per hour (requires visitors to your site to happen obviously)... you'd have to cleverly recode it to work slightly more often

If you get an error its real weird that the file is being uploaded.
Generally if you get an error during upload it is because of one of these 3 things
Invalid physical path specified
Unsupported upload method chosen
Permissions

, I have written asp.net application pages- obviously i knew what viewstate was, or else when they made a mistake on that page it would not have saved their filled in info. Same thing for after they submitted, when they hit the back button their info would be gone.
For someone who wrote this software it seems you are not able to do simple things. Im begining to think you didn't write it. The only reason no one else asked this many questions is possibly because they didnt NEED the functions i am TRYING to do.
I know how the log boxes work. Esp. reg ASP... they all allow you to enter your username and password and then when you hit submit it gets verified and transfers you to your destination. ASP.NET has that capability also.. i didn't purchase a program to go and have to re-write it in visual studio. It would take me longer to re-write YOUR code than it would to have LEARNED ASP.NET and made MY OWN.
The program seems to have some great complex features, however, your not able to incorporate this easy login from a diff. page function... fishy , MSACCESS or SQL server ?, I wonder what that ENDSQLMail send failure is all about ?
I dont use anything regarding SQLMAIL in the ASPProtect code.
I think I might need to go in so I can debug a bit. Everything seems to work fine with a SQL installation here so I just don't know at the moment.
If that is ok with you I would need ftp access or something so I can trry a few things and hopefully figure it out. Admin access to the aspprotect admin area as well so I can see what you have set up in there.

I have used ASPUpload and SA-FileUP before and know that this is caused
by the components having their own .form collection. This script
is using "Pure ASP File Upload" from DMXZone for the upload which I'm
not familiar with.
So...my question is, do you know a way around the BinaryRead problem wtih ASPProtect?

I dont really have any ideas about the japanese characters. I also don't have any ideas about changing settings in the database. Your going to have to do some research on all of that.
Perhaps try pasting the text into a text document 1st.. then copy/paste them into the application. Perhaps that will eliminate any unseen weird characters. I do it sometimes when pasting things from word to my html editors and it works great.

I dont/cant support custimization to the code but here are some tips to get you started.
edit "items_inc.asp" carefully with a text editor
(back it up before you begin so you can revert back)
change this anywhere you see it
?SORTBY=Name
to

or
?SORTBY=Name+Desc
Expiriment to see which gives you the desired sorting.
Do the same process for the price.
The + Sign just passes a "space" back to the page in the proper format if you are wondering.

The banner logic in aspbanner it tweaked for speed and performance.. that sort of thing really wouldn't fit into the current code structure very well. It would slow things down and be a nightmare to code because of the way aspbanner uses ultra fast application variables for the banner rotation. Basically its a feature I didnt incorporate for performance and pricing reasons.
I would suggest making different zones for different conditions.. then surrounding the banner calling code with if else logic so a different baner zone was called under certain conditions.
That way performance would not be effected and you could actually show a different group of banners based on certain conditions.
Sorry, but that is the best advice I can offer at this time.

I didn't know you imported from another system,
chances are you are missing field information that an ASPProtect user requires.
Start off from scratch with a new aspprotect database... create a new user and look at the info that gets entered by default for every field in the database
make sure when you import a user that you mimic it all
dont import directly using access because the passwords will not get converted to encrypted versions of themselves correctly.. and the whole process will be usesless as no passwords will be correct
Use the import feature built into ASPProtect.. because it is smart enough to take the clear text passwords and encrypt them accordingly
if you want to know a correctly formatted import file needs to look like make one and check it out
do one user at a time and make sure you can log in to an example protected page till you get it right...
once you get that working do them all

CJW , Your assumption was incorrect.... the login count has nothing to do with that. The login count only has one purpose and that is to limit the amount of times a user can log in if you want to do that.
Logging in for the 1st time means the time at which they 1st login and their session at the site is created... If there session ends and they come back and login they will get redirected because it will be the 1st time again.
Forms Based Authentication is all about sessions and session variables.
If you only want them redirected somewhere based on the login count that is something you have to work out and check on your own. It's very doable.
Seems like now I should have explained that better but I never thought anyone would think it meant what you thought., 1st: try it with a normal dsn-less connection like we show in the example.. dont use that OLEDB.4.0 connection string.. connecting like that can cause a lot of problems and is not as great as everyone thinks it is and it can sometimes be difficult to get it working when the database has a password set on it
For the sake of troubleshooting just connect like so: (fixing the path of course)

3rd: If the app does not run using the connection string like I say to use then the problem is 100% on their end and is either related to permissions or the fact they are keeping the access database on a network path which is BAD BAD BAD... no quality host that knew what they are doing would set it up that way.. ultimately you don't want to host asp with a place that has a setup like that

As for only happening once in a while. It could be a lot of things.
Version being used (when did you purchase.. what name/email was it under and I can look) ?
What banner method being used?
Access or MSSQL ?
How busy the site is ?

We are actually having a lot of problems with this software.
Apart from the above problem of the email not being in the database as details above we also do not get any reply emails from any forms, the mass email button does not appear and the forgotten password does not send emails either.
We have CDONTS Version: 2.80 Installed as the email system, this is operational on the server. I have tested this with server_info.asp to check.

if you want to PM me info on how to get into your site and I will take a look.. I don't think it is something that can be figured out otherwise especially when you are not telling much about what is going on. There are a lot of factors and settings that are relevant. , Sorry, not really.. not without a lot of changes to the code.

provided you arent trying to grab the injectbanner page through an iframe call which is only for use with the javascript method of calling banners , Sounds crazy. I recently took over this web site and all IT duties. User today said member area was not working. All pages would not display. After restoring some files I got the members area partially working. But I cannot find where the database sits. I am able to get in and view users in the admin are and log in as a member. Thanks.,
