Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 4:50:01 PM
When adding a new user I am taken to a form.
There are several "required fields".
First and last names are 2 of them.
This is not needed by me and I need the company name as a required field instead. I work and deal with company names, not individuals.
So, i am unable to add any users due to this.
How can I either do away with the names as a required field or swap the individual names with the company name as a required field?
I have customers wanting to be able to view their own stats, but I need to do away with the required fields to work with my customer base.

, ok
thanks

,
if you use either of those options the mail server info you use must of course be valid (example: mail.somesite.com) your host can provide that info
you should also make sure your sending the emails using an account at your email server.. not some other email you have
other than that if it does not send emails it could be because your hosting company may require authentication for outgoing emails...
ask them ...
if that is the case the version of ASPBanner you have does not support sending email that way and you would need to add the necessary code to any places that send email... in order for emailing to work
, Hello,
I dont know exactly how you go about that and it would really depend on a lot of things like when the ad started and how yu wanted t handle that. it would involve custom coding though, not a change in the database.
, If you bought ASPBanner Unlimited Version 7.3 Before August/10/2004 this file needs to be updated.
It fixes a bug where the JavaScript method is not properlly closing an html Image tag. It can cause other hyperlinks on your web page to link to the same place the banner links to. This does not always happen but this fix is the way the code should be so it is best to update it.
Copy this file into your ASPBanner folder over the existing file of the same name.

cwilliams38209.5378009259, Thank you for the response to my question. In the mean time if I can figure any workaround I will post it here.
, sounds like the data/export folde does not have permissions, More Info on Simple File Sharing
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.h tm
http://www.theeldergeek.com/quick_guide_to_simple_file_shari ng.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;3040 40
, I'm getting errors when clicking the Update Config Button in the System Info page and when clicking the log files button.
I'm not sure if it's a permission thing or not. ASPNET and IUSR both have modify access to the _database folder and childs, yet I'm still getting the error:
Access to the path "D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotectnet\_database\xsd\aspprotectne t_config.xml" is denied.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\_database\xsd\aspprotectnet_config.xml" is denied.
ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.
To grant ASP.NET write access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.
Any ideas?
Thanks

, you can not limit image size using the pure code upload method. Its not possible using a pure asp method that I know of.
You would have to be using one the supported commercial upload components and edit the upload code accordinly to limit upload sizes (you would do this by looking through their documentation and samples) I didnt include any support for upload file size limitations with the supported 3rd party upload components because in my testing I found it problematic with all but aspupload from persits software. (I have example coe for that component I can provide that limits the upload size and seems to do it well) I am sure it could work with safileup and dundas as well but I gave up trying.
As for image resizing..
Image resizing requires the use of one of the supported 3rd party image resizing components. You didnt mention if you are using one or not. If you dont have one available image resizing is just not possible as asp can not do that on its own.
,
Is it possible to change the currency for
accepting payments? I will like to change from US to Canadian.
Thanks in advance
Roy
, ok, that is done and seems to be working..
I edited the RC4 function in the "config_inc.asp" file like I mentioned
so the function now looks like this which just acts as a passthrough and really does nothing
Function RC4(ByRef pStrMessage, ByRef pCookieEncryptionKey)
RC4 = pStrMessage
End Function
so it is all set, go try things out and lets see if anything else weird comes up
Username "admin"
Password "abcdefghij" , so you are using the subscriptions signup directory right ?
"paypal_signup2" ?
1st.. I would check that the xml parser is working.
It is required for making the post back to paypal.
It is installed on windows 2000 and 2003 and XP by default.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=134& ; ; ; ; ; ;PN=1
Then I would check the actual form page to paypal to make sure it is generating a valid IPN url as a hidden form value. It's the payment page you actually click on that actually takes you to paypal. For the subscription signup system that page is called "paypal1.asp"
You'll want to go through the process starting with the default.asp of the signup folder untill you get to that page. Then you want to look at the html source of that page in Internet Explorer. Your looking for something like this in the source code and you want to make sure it is valid.
<input type="hidden" name="notify_url" value=http://www.mysite.com/aspprotect/paypal_sub_signup/ipn.asp>
It also has to a url on the internet that paypals server can see. It can not be a local url for your machine. Also: If it is not valid we can try hard coding it.
If all of these things are good I'll have to take a look. I have some text file logging I can do when paypal hits your IPN url that can tell us if it is actually hitting that page like it is supposed to. And I can test the system for you by making some 1 cent payments using my own paypal account until we find out what is going wrong.
cwilliams38421.5686921296, I assumed when it said "expected path" that it understand that was the default and unless I wanted it in a different directory I could leave that blank. I'm checking on it now., Thanks Chris.
Yes i never actually considered that they should log in twice.
The site uses two main url and the cookie was being stored for only one
of them. I have fixed the double login issue by making changes to
menu to ensure that they are always logging only via the url stored in
the cookie.
Thanks for your hep,

, "do you know a way around the BinaryRead problem with ASPProtect?"
Let me rephrase:
Do you know a way in which ASPProtect can be modified to get around the BinaryRead problem?
Thanks,
Michelle
, ok, well as far as what else to try I already told you..
you need to manually compare all those field settings with the sql script and make sure they all got set correctly...
you also need to tell me what email/name you ordered the application under... before I will continue this support with you.. at this point I don't know if you purchased the application or if you are using the unsupported lite version
, Honestly cannot comment much about v7 since it was just installed on a new server. We have been running 5.03 for years so I'm looking forward to the new features in v7.
Lance
, Just to let you know that i figured out my problem. I had to modify the connection in the email code and get the correct path from my provider.
I hope you enjoyed your vacation.
Thank you
Adam
, and the permissions, how exactly were they set ?
I find a lot of customers think they are setting permissions correctly when they really are not. That's why I wrote that long article on the subject.
As you probably know a data connection is a very low level thing. It is the foundation of any ASP application that communicates with a database. Unfortunatly it sometimes takes a while to get the hang of setting them up without issue.
Everything must be perfect.. the ODBC drivers must be up to date, folder permission are critical, sometimes you must use a new version of the access database.. etc etc etc The errors and things that happen when all these things are not perfect and not helpful as you have found out.
I would suggest you download and get ASPTest from CJWSoft running before you go any further. It is designed to be as simple as possible and helps get a hang of the database setup process.
, yes, like macnap says.... you have to protect your ".asp" pages the way the directions tell you to...
and like in the "example" protected pages we provide
or they will not be protected and nothing will happen as far as ASPProtect goes
I guess I just didnt understand what you were talking about
, I am having problems with a password a user wants to use. He wants HANNAH. When he (or I) try to log in with his username and password, I get a syntax error -
Syntax error in string in query expression '(Username = 'changedforsecurity') AND (Password = ' éG'.
pathOnComputer../1protect/check_user_inc.asp, line 114
I've obviously changed the username and the server path in the info above for security.
I have not messed with the encryption.
What is it that the system doesn't like in the word HANNAH as a password? I would just change his password for him but this guy has enough trouble just turning the computer on! Confusing him with a new password would take weeks to set him straight.
Thanks,
Mick
, Well I have the web hosting tech looking into the memory issues at this point. Unfortunately I don't have another machine to be able to run the asp on that would run it correctly so that I can just publish it over.
, Microsoft has a free version of SQL server 2000 than you can run on a development machine.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=413 744d1-a0bc-479f-bafa-e4b278eb9147&DisplayLang=en
This is really the same thing as the MSDN version of SQL server that comes with Visual Studio
It is limited in two ways.
No single database can exceed 2 gigabytes in size. However, each Desktop Engine server instance can contain many databases, each of which can be up to 2 gigabytes in size. Each computer can host up to sixteen instances of Desktop Engine.
Performance will rapidly decline when more than five simultaneous users use the database engine at the same time. With five users or less Desktop Engine will operate with full SQL Server speed.
After you install this your going to need a way to connect to your sql server as well as a way to run queires on it.
I suggest either install the client tools off any SQL 2000 Installation Disc (giving you enterprise manager and query manager)
or use the FREE SQL Server Web Data Administrator which will do amost everything you will need to do. It is really very slick
http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=127& ; ; ;PN=1
Then you have a pretty sweet setup for testing and developing locally using SQL server.
If you are wondering why someone with a real SQL Server 2000 cd wouldn't just install the real SQL server locally it is because the server part will usually not install on XP Pro or non server versions of windows for licensing reasons. (at least every SQL 2000 CD I have is like that regardless of whether it is standard or enterprise) But the client side tools on the cd are invaluable so I just install the Desktop Version of SQL along with the client side tools and everything works great.
, I think I've got it to work somewhat. I modified the 2checkout1 & 2 asp file to use and pass Product_id. It now identifies the product correctly. I'm good fo now. Thanks for the info though.
-Jason
, No, Unfortunately.
I have seen your messages.
I have not edited the code at all.
Tomorrow I will install the sql database again from your script as I
did before and I will try again. I will send all the details.
Thank you again.
, Additional Information.
A set of these variables get created for every user that logs in to your site.
For performance and memory conservation reasons some of them can be turned off and are optional.
If you look in the "check_user_inc.asp" file or the "check_admin_inc.asp" file you will see a section of code like this
' Start of optional session variables to be set
' Recommended that you remark out any of the session variables below that you don't really need to use
' This will save a lot of server resource because every user logged in has a set of these
' I added some code here to not create these if they are empty
If CmdCheckUser("First_Name") <> "" Then Session("First_Name") = CmdCheckUser("First_Name")
If CmdCheckUser("Last_Name") <> "" Then Session("Last_Name") = CmdCheckUser("Last_Name")
If CmdCheckUser("Company_Name") <> "" Then Session("Company_Name") = CmdCheckUser("Company_Name")
If CmdCheckUser("Email") <> "" Then Session("Email") = CmdCheckUser("Email")
If CmdCheckUser("Address") <> "" Then Session("Address") = CmdCheckUser("Address")
If CmdCheckUser("City") <> "" Then Session("City") = CmdCheckUser("City")
If CmdCheckUser("State_Province") <> "" Then Session("State_Province") = CmdCheckUser("State_Province")
If CmdCheckUser("Zipcode_Postal_Code") <> "" Then Session("Zipcode_Postal_Code") = CmdCheckUser("Zipcode_Postal_Code")
If CmdCheckUser("Phone") <> "" Then Session("Phone") = CmdCheckUser("Phone")
If CmdCheckUser("Custom1") <> "" Then Session("Custom1") = CmdCheckUser("Custom1")
If CmdCheckUser("Custom2") <> "" Then Session("Custom2") = CmdCheckUser("Custom2")
If CmdCheckUser("Custom3") <> "" Then Session("Custom3") = CmdCheckUser("Custom3")
If CmdCheckUser("Custom4") <> "" Then Session("Custom4") = CmdCheckUser("Custom4")
If CmdCheckUser("Custom5") <> "" Then Session("Custom5") = CmdCheckUser("Custom5")
If CmdCheckUser("Custom6") <> "" Then Session("Custom6") = CmdCheckUser("Custom6")
' End of optional session variables to be set
If you do not need a particular variable to be set as a session variable simply comment that line out with single quote.
If you have an extremely busy site with a lot of users this is a good idea. If not, you probably don't need to bother doing this. I added some code in there so they will not be created if they are empty and that alone helps out a lot.
cwilliams38419.5459606481, It almost seems like allow images is denied. When I look at the ad it doesn't even show a place where the thumbnail or image would go:
Columns now are Ad Name/ Price / Expires / Hits
There used to be one before Ad Name.
Even unchecked (saved) and checked
Use_Picture_Upload |
< = value=True name=Use_Picture_Upload> Check this if you will be using the picture uploading feature. |
, It's not normal at all. My guess you accidently edited the code in a bad way.
(thats the same code the every guestbook in every application I sell uses including ASPGuest which gets downloaded for free about 50 times a day)
No one has ever said it acted funny.
I would do a default installation with the original code somewhere and see if the problem occurs. If it does I can take a look.
In the meantime I wouldn't be running that as it is probably using up massive processor time because of whatever is wrong with it.
cwilliams38454.954212963, no worries from me. As with most software projects, i tweak the
heck out of them and then have to make a big decision about whether or
not i even want/need to upgrade.
KT
, You are not supposed to use "../" with a virtual include
Thats goes against what a virtual include is and makes no sense.
When using a virtual include you give the path as if accessing from the root of the main web / virtual directory
I find it very hard to believe it ever worked like that and if it ever did it was wrong.
cwilliams38434.6703356481, Nov 2005
, ok
, Well. fontpage publishing is evil. That you have found out.
Do not use it. It usually wont work right when running asp code locally and also at the server because of differences with the paths and virtual directory structure. etc etc etc
You can definetly use frontpage to connect to the web site live and drag and drop files into it/edit them... but the sooner you stop using the publishing feature the better off you will be.
, thats a new one... I need some sort of error to go on..
No error ever ? It must eventually show something ?
, All this being said installing the desktop version of SQL may be a little tricky as it may complain that your SA account needs a strict password.
The solution is to run the SQL Desktop setup.exe with some parameters specifying a password for the SA account.
So you go to the command prompt or make a shortcut to the setup file and run something like this
setup.exe SAPWD="YourPassword"
minus the quotes...
I got that info from this article and it worked fine
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Databases/Q_21036508.html
The other thing to remember is it might take a reboot to actually see the SQL server icon running in the taskbar. You may also need to go into the administrative services and enable the "SQLSERVERAGENT" as well as set its startup type to "automatic"
And a reboot here and there..
Whammo... your in business...
, Version 8.1 can work with MySQL
http://www.aspbanner.com/aspbanunlimited_v8.asp
It is just not supported at all.
The standard version can not work with MySQL.
There were a lot of changes to make the new version work with it and I really only did ift because I have a couple friends with busy sites that could only use MySQL.
It sounds like your site is way too busy for using an access database as you mentioned.
, Thank you so much that works great.
I will test with the other settings on the email server again thanks for the advice,
best regards
, Hi Chris,
Our company has a big dilemma on how to manage the database for accounts that are expiring/expired.
We saw the function to email a batch of users who are expiring soon but this doesn't help us to complete the renewal process.
Once the email is sent, what happens afterwards? how can we setup the system so that we can renew their expiry dates or accounts without too much hassle?
The system currently doesn't have any renewal functions or to allow batch changes on multiple accounts at the same time so we have to manually edit one account at a time. This is extremely tedious if we have over 1000 accounts to manage (and we will).
If you have anything to suggest on all this I would appreciate it :)
Thanks alot
Sylvain
, After you click the link in the confirmation e-mail you are directed to
the Thank you page. Right above is a sign in link. When I
click this I get that funky error message.
I am trying to integrate the scripts with the look of my
site, if that is what you mean by changing things around too
much. But, I don't think I have done anything out of the ordinary.
Cheers,
Roy
