You kid around again regarding illegal downloads and not only will you be banned from the forums, your support will be cut off completely.
, Hello,
My guess your having trouble setting up a system dsn because the database has a password set on it. Your hosting company most likely sets up DSNs without using the advanced tab which is where the authentication information goes. Or they have some sort of web interface for the customers to use that doesn’t allow setting up that information.System DSN’s are actually difficult to set up correctly when the database has a password on it. There is of course a password on the database for security reasons so if someone ever downloads it somehow they will not get your information.
System DSN’s are not the way to go regardless as you will see mentioned at our support site.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9&P N=1
You really should try setting up a DSN-less connection. It is the best way to go. They are easier to set up, perform better, and are less load on the server. Any host that wants it customers to use system dsn’s is not on the ball as far as server performance and server resource conservation goes. They are really asking for trouble down the road.
All you need to do to make dsn-less connection is the following.
Get permissions set for the folder the database is in (by your host)… then figure out the physical path on the server to the database by using server.mappath or you simply ask your host for the info.
An article I wrote on using server.mappath
http://www.powerasp.com/content/hintstips/physical-path.asp
Then your connection string will look something like this.. (of course you edit the path to match what server.mappath tells you. And you make sure the database name is correct)
ListingsConnectionString = "DBQ=C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\asplistings\_database\asplistings_ac cess2000.mdb;Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};UID=Admin;Password=temp"
Another option would be to simply remove the password from the database using MSACCESS.. then try to connect to it using a System DSN without the password. If your host is storing the databases outside of your web in the root of the server then removing the password on the database is not that bad of a thing to do as there is no way anyone will be able to dload it from your site. Of course there is a still a performace loss when using a system dsn with an Access Database cwilliams38145.8540509259,
It is most likely because they have something running like Norton Ad Blocker.
Or something of that nature that blocks anything with certain words in it like "ad"
They are running something that is doing it.cwilliams38450.0079282407, As I already had directories in my web site root called 'images' and 'templates' I loaded the files into a sub directory called 'aspprotect' as suggested in the installation guide where it say 'either way it really doesn't matter'.
However, it does.
The scripts are often looking for a file which it can't find because the /aspprotect part of the path is missing. Example:
I can't find a way of editing all the scripts that need changing. I'm assuming it would be easier to change my site to avoid using subdirectories used by aspprotect and reinstalling from scratch straight into the root directory.
Anyone with any suggestions?
Many thanks
Ian , Ahhh, I see it, thanks that was the ticket.

, On second thought guys, it would must easier to change the code using modulus as follows:
<% If PicIndex mod 6 = 0 THEN %> </tr> <tr> <% End If %>
This will end each row and create a new row after each 6th picture. It'll be must easier code to work with and change. This code must be placed in the PicIndex For Loop.
If you have any questions, JPortnoy@Checkernet.com , Not sure because of the nature of the javascript method
for starters tighten up the html around the banner call
change
<tr> <td width="460" height="60" align="center" valign="middle" class="imagead"> <!------- ASPBanner Ad code -------------> <script language="JavaScript"> var code = ''; var now = new Date(); var nIndex = now.getTime(); document.write('<s' + 'cript src=" http://www.nababaseball.com/aspbannernet/aspbanner/injectban ner.aspx?BannerZone=1&nocache=' + nIndex + '">'); document.write('</' + 's' + 'cript>'); </script> <script language="JavaScript">document.write(jscode);</script >
</td>
to
<tr> <td width="460" height="60" align="center" valign="middle" class="imagead"> <script language="JavaScript"> var code = ''; var now = new Date(); var nIndex = now.getTime(); document.write('<s' + 'cript src=" http://www.nababaseball.com/aspbannernet/aspbanner/injectban ner.aspx?BannerZone=1&nocache=' + nIndex + '">'); document.write('</' + 's' + 'cript>'); </script> <script language="JavaScript">document.write(jscode);</script > </td>
If that doesn't help I would suggest using the ASP 3.0 version of ASPBanner. It can serve banners to a any type of page extension and it runs just as well as the .NET version. There is a new iframe method for calling banners that you can try instead of the javascript. The iframe method is explained in the ASPBanner Unlimited section of the forum. cwilliams38150.6443634259, ya it should have uploaded that no problem...
what about something blocking the use of the filesystem object and causing these timeouts ?
Your not running anything like Norton Script Blocker are you ? Its part of Norton Antivirus or Internet Security and causes all sorts of problems with ASP when it is running on a server. Especailly when using the filesystem object to deal with text files and when uploading via pure asp.
It could be the cause of the all these problems or something like it ?
It will cause a timeout like your getting and give no real reason why.
More info on that. http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2180, Hello,
Sorry, I do not have any good ideas on this one... Domain Name Masking can cause issues with quite a few things.
cwilliams38366.3136342593, Got any info for me on this ?
Chris , Sounds crazy. I recently took over this web site and all IT duties. User today said member area was not working. All pages would not display. After restoring some files I got the members area partially working. But I cannot find where the database sits. I am able to get in and view users in the admin are and log in as a member. Thanks., Is there any way to extend the limit multiple login feature to a certain number instead all or none? In other words, i need to have a user be able to use the same login for x number of people. My customers are institutions and want to be able to have a single login for however many users they purchase for. ,
Both
the NET and Classic ASP versions of this application are designed for
fine granularity protection of individual apsx extension files.
ASPProtect.NET is not designed or intended to protect sub directories,
or non aspx content such as Adobe Acrobat .pdf files etc etc.
I
completely disagree with your statement that “most sites” have a login
box on the left hand side of the page. I suspect you thinking of the
ever popular php based forums and “Nuke” type CMS systems which are set
up that way but if you look at any site written entirely using .NET
that’s rarely if ever the case. (Granted I cant say for sure because I
personally haven’t looked at >50% of the estimated 18 billion + web
pages on the internet) Just off the top of my head www.CafePress.com
come to mind as a pure .NET site. If you take a look the login button
it takes you to its own login page there is not global login form used
throughout the site. Reason being that .NET introduced this thing
called a “view state” which is used to store things like your session
ID (and way more) and must be posted back to the server in order to
keep track of visitors. This technology comes in especially handy when
you have a web farm in place and your content is being spit out out by
more than one server at the same time
I
can think of loads of scenarios where the web servers need to know who
you are even though you are never directly contacting them via http.
This approach is a very smooth and actually very clever solution for
enterprise level websites that simply can’t be handled with a single
web server.
On
a practical level I know what you are saying but that application sets
up all sorts of things when a protected page is accessed and the user
is not yet authenticated. That’s the entire reason you need to put that
snippet of code at the top of a page you want to protect. That code
snippet calls the ASPProtect.NET class and runs through all the logic
to see if you are able to access the page. If you are the subroutine
exits and the server continues to process the remaining logic on the
page. AKA you are able to access its content. If you are NOT
authenticated ASPProtect will setup all the proper session and
viewstate info and redirect you to the login page for authentication.
You may have also noticed a parameter on the login page called
ReturnURL. The application looks for that info and if you do have a
user ID and password the application automatically redirects you to the
page you were trying to access in the first place.
Really
I have no idea what you are trying to do, but there is a world of
difference in how something looks verses how it works. Lets just say
there was a simple way to do what your thinking, what are you going to
do with that login form after the person logs in? Just keep displaying
it on the entire site so people get confused and don’t know if they are
logged in or not? Just that little part of the equation will require
making some changes to either ASPProtect.NET or your application will
have to have some logic built into it to stop displaying the login
forum.
It
sounds to me like your basically looking for a super simple 101 type
deal that allows people to sign up for an event and you the admin can
see that information? I’m guessing they can also log in again and check
out their details and see what event they signed up for?
If
that’s the case you’re trying to take a very sophisticated protection
application and downgrade it into something that would be one heck of a
lot easier to write all from scratch in about an hour.
Your
not going to be able to “plug and play” a simple form into a page and
turn that application as a magic universal login solution for a
website, while its 100% possible to use the application that way if you
choose, you need to check out the source code and plan your custom
integration accordingly.
, ok, I am really starting to get the hang of your
software. It seems to me, you have thought of everything a person could
possible want. Before I try to tackle
setting up Pay Pal subscription payments is there really any difference
between a file include and a virtual include statement? Is one more
secure than another?
, I didn't think that was it, but just to prove, I just viewed the same album from 2 different IP's. It did not increment the "hits". , You need to make sure you created the SQL database using the SQL scripts we provide and that no errors occur whatsoever. That is extremely important. You must use our SQL creation scripts.
Then, when you create the user you need to go back to that user and make sure you check the admin account and save that user again. (many times when setting up a system for someone I find myself forgetting that step and then I have to go back in and check the admin box for the user I created.)
And of course create the user from the ASPProtect admin area web interface. Do not add the user to the database manually because you will have no way to enter the password correct as it is encrypted. And do not change the encryption key after making the user/.
It would also be wise to check the SQL server database at every step to make sure the user info gets created and that all the field info looks correct for the most part.
You also want to be sure to specify SQL as the database type side the connection string info as the SQL directions go over
a remote sql server should not an issue.
thats really all I can think of right now , here ya go
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo169-1.htm
, Anyone have any experience configuring PhotoGallery to use a backend mySQL database?
The application connects successfully for Read operations, but no amount of troubleshooting can get it to Write records to the tables.
http://www.marc-lisa.com/photos/default.asp , Now, we can connect to the MySQL database with ASPBanner using the following connection string if we like.
"driver={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver};server=localhost;port=3306;uid=root;pwd=temp;databas e=aspbanner;option=16386"
But we really do not want to connect to the aspbanner MySQL database using the "root" account
So, lets make an account to use..
In MySQL Administrator select "User Administration"
Down below you will see the user "root"
Right click on "root" and select "Add new user"

Type in a New MySQL Username and Password
I am going to call my new user "aspbanneruser"
Hit the Schema Privileges" tab

In this case since I am using the root account to manage my MySQL system I am just going to give this new user account what it needs to use the aspbanner database.. you may want to apply more permissions to the new account, that is up to you.. I am giving the new user (select, insert, update, delete, execute) So I right click on the aspbanner and then bring over the permissions I need for it.. and hit apply changes down in the bottom right.
We can now connect to the aspbanner MySQL database using this new account like so.
"driver={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver};server=localhost;port=3306;uid=aspbanneruser;pwd=tem p;databas e=aspbanner;option=16386"
------------------------------------------------------------ ----- article still in the process of being written (3/14/06) , This post unfortutely needs to be here because this application has been the biggest pain in the neck for me you could possibly imagine. This is not because of problems with the application, but because of people's general lack of knowlegde regarding ASP.NET. This post totally voices my stance on what sort of knowledge you need to have and also the fact that I am not going to support anything but general installation on a correctly and professionaly set up live server.
ASPProtect.NET is a great application but using ASP.NET requires a lot more basic knowledge than using classic ASP and there are a lot of basic low level ASP.NET things that need to be set up correctly for an application like ASPProtect.NET to run. These are things I do not cover because you should know the ASP.NET basics when using an application as complex as this. It's just that I don't have time to nor should I have to teach people the basics of ASP.NET. I don't charge nearly enough for ASPProtect.NET to offer that kind of support.
So, I will say it one more time. ASPProtect.NET is targeted towards experienced Visual Studio.NET developers that know how to work with Code Behind VB.NET and are familiar with basic ASP concepts such as IIS application settings, the .NET framework, the aspnet_client folder, and the basics of the web.config file. If you are using ASP.NET for whatever reason you need to know about these things. The best way is to get some good books and do set up ASP.NET on a local development machine so you can start learning.
If you are one of the ASP.NET challenged let me say this as well.
Stick with Classic ASP. ASP.NET is a step in the wrong direction for the average user which I like to refer to as "Joe Coder". Classic ASP is very powerful and easy to pick up. ASP.NET is not easy to pick up and never will be for a lot of people. In my opinion it’s actually the wrong technology to use for anyone other than big corporations who need extreme scalability in their applications or for the hobbyist or object oriented programmer who just wants to use the latest and greatest. Ask yourself if you really want to deal with compiling Code Behind code each time you make changes to your web site as opposed to just editing some files in notepad real quick like you can do with classic ASP ? Do you have the money to purchase and use Visual Studio.NET or are you going to struggle with compiling all your ASP.NET pages using a command line compiler and a batch file ? Yes, you can build ASP.NET code that isn't code behind but why even bother if that is the case because your missing the point of ASP.NET if you do that and missing out on a lot of powerful new features and concepts.
When I do custom projects for bigger clients I usually end up using ASP.NET because they want to go that way and understand the time and money involved. When I do any of my own projects I use Classic ASP because the truth is you can still make some rockin busy scalable web sites with Classic ASP just like you can still make great web sites with CGI, PP, Cold Fusion.. etc etc. Look around the web because a lot of the biggest sites out there still use those scripting technologies and their stuff runs very well. ASP.NET is a lot of hype and although some things about it are plain awesome it is an environment best suited for real object oriented programmers, not the weekend code warriors.
The other thing to keep in mind about classic ASP is the shear abundance of applications and scripts available for it. ASP.NET can be expensive for that reason alone as there still is a shortage of good time tested applications out there and what is out there is always priced a lot higher.
In addition to that half of the ASP.NET applications out there are just half baked poorly converted versions of their Classic ASP counterparts. Is that the kind of thing you want to sink twice the money into or would you rather have something that runs well and has been tweaked year after year into a rock solid product?
To make things worse a lot of the hosting companies out there offering ASP.NET hosting are severely limiting the basic abilities of ASP.NET because of various security concerns. This means if you go with a Host that does that 75% of the asp.net stuff out there won't run on the hosted server. Isn't that wonderful ?
Now, Let's make things even worse. So far every time Microsoft has released a new version of ASP.NET a lot of things from the previous version have stopped working and needed to be modified to work correctly. Is that really something you will have the time, resources, and energy to deal with.
You may ask "but is classic ASP going to be around 5 years from now?" Though you never really know until the new version of windows server ships I say "Hell Yes" it will be. According to my sources at Port80 Software who work very closely with the folks at Microsoft (as well as many other sources out there) it will almost certainly be in Longhorn which is the next version of Windows Server. Longhorn probably won't come out until 2007 and will be popular for 3-4 years after that. The version of windows server after that will most likely support Classic ASP as well and if it doesn't I am sure there will be a way to make ASP run on it. If you really look around a lot of hosting companies are still running Windows Server 2000 which is 5 years old at the moment. The bottom line is Classic ASP helped put Microsoft web technologies on the map. Microsoft can not simply drop it because if they do they give up a dominate market share to the scripting competition being PHP, CGI, Cold Fusion.. etc etc PHP for instance a huge installed base on many platforms which are essentially free. ASP.NET can not compete with that in any way and not supporting Classic ASP would put microsoft in a bad position.
Take it from me. If you are a weekend code warrior/script kiddie. You'll be a lot happier sticking with classic ASP. You will also have save a lot of money and you can still have great web sites. There are tons of great applications out there in ASP and ASP still is and always will be the easiest scripting language to work with and learn. Better yet look around on sites like www.4guysfromrolla.com and see if you actually understand any of the latest articles. If it looks like Greek to you that is yet another sign that you should stick to classic ASP.
Personally, I will be focusing just as much time and effort on ASP.NET as I will on Classic ASP in the years to come for a few reasons.
- Because I sell software I obviously need to convert/re-write most of my appIications to work with ASP.NET. My living may eventually depend on it.
- Because I love using the latest technologies I want to continue to develop using ASP.NET.
- Because I do many custom projects for various clients using ASP.NET is a must.
- Because in some cases using ASP.NET over classic ASP makes total sense.
Just don't fall for the HYPE folks. I am one of the few established developers out there that has a set of Balls and is willing to put the truth out there and see past the bullsh*t. If you go ASP.NET do it because you seriosuly think you need the power and scalabilty and money and time is not an issue or because you are a hobbiest and object oriented programmer who likes working with and has time to work with the latest and greatest web scripting technolgies out there. I truly believe that so far ASP.NET is as much a success as it is a failure. I am sure some of you out there know what I mean by that.
All this being said you should also realize that ASPProtect.NET is a little different than your average ASP.NET application because it uses a lot of advanced ASP.NET techniques and you essentially use it to password protect your existing scripts meaning you need to integrate your stuff with our stuff in a sense. If you just go buy some random ASP.NET application like a classifieds system or storefront it is probably just going to run on it's own an therefore will be a lot easier to set up and deal with.

Chris Willians http://www.cjwsoft.com/about.asp , I am confused.
Humm, how did ASPBanner 8 come with your purchase of ASPProtect ? That is not something I am aware of or something I do. Please provide more information on how you obtained ASPBanner 8. If I gave yu a copy for some reason please refresh my memory so I can go look up th emails about it. I need to know you have a valid license.
Now, as for the two not working together and the login screens messing with each other. I am even more confused. Tell me more as I just do not understand what you did ? ASPBanner has it's own user database and login system so there is no reason you should be mixing the two together as far as logins go. The two applications can certainly be in the same web together and not bother each other. ASPBanner can certainly serve banners to any pages you protect with ASPProtect or don't protect, but you certainly should not be protecting any ASPBanner code with ASPProtect code. ASPBanner already has code in it to do that. If that is the case don't do that. ASPProtect is not meant to protect code that already has a login system. That should just be obvious as far as I am concerned and hopefully you dintn't try to do that.
(you said you just put the directory in there but there must be more too this than that)
But again, tell me more. I can't really know everything ??
I just dont see how your ASPProtect pages could be effected by ASPBanner unless you really did something wacky like included the ASPBanner "check_user_inc.asp" instead of the one that comes with ASPProtect or overwrote it... etc ect
If in the same web aspprotect can be wherever and aspbanner needs to be in a folder called "aspbanner". There should be no conflicts under normal use and the two will essentially run seperate of one another. , That helped very much. Thank you. Hope you enjoyed your dinner., Hello,
I dont know exactly how you go about that and it would really depend on a lot of things like when the ad started and how yu wanted t handle that. it would involve custom coding though, not a change in the database. , You have old code I think.
It's probably because his password used with your encryption key by chance creates a single quote and messes up the database query
A notice went out about this. I will PM you the latest download with the updated files. , Thanks Chris.
Yes i never actually considered that they should log in twice.
The site uses two main url and the cookie was being stored for only one
of them. I have fixed the double login issue by making changes to
menu to ensure that they are always logging only via the url stored in
the cookie.
Thanks for your hep,
Stuart
, Sorry, there is not any documentation on that.. it is basic asp/database work and customization like that is not supported. I recommended looking at what is already there and using that as a guide to produce more fields. etc etc , If you re-start the web via IIS, reboot the server, or (possibly) just add and remove a category... that will clear up.
ASPClassifieds and ASPListings must be installed in seperate IIS applications if they are the same web. Otherwise the category caching system of each system will interfere with each other. They were never intended to be installed in the same web together since ASPListings is merely a stripped down version of ASPClassifieds and they share a lot of the same code. Like I said though if different IIS applications are set up in the web site you can do it because each IIS application will have it's own set of application and session variables. , It appears there is an auto logout after inactivity for a period of time. How does one change the default time allowed for inactivity?
thx ,
I have a quick question...when a user signs up I have a drop down menu for Company name and they have a choice of branch selections. Everything works fine but when the info is saved in the database there is some sort of conversion to lower-case...?
Original drop list selection:
Winston Salem, NC - (XXX/XXX) - original
In the database (access), some letters are lowercased now...why? anything to do with the period, , or - ?
Winston Salem, Nc - (xxx/xxx) - what is saved
, Oh, I just remembered something.. It's been a while since I did this... :)
Nevermind what I said above as that is a different sort of "debug"
When you want to debug like your talking about find this section in the "web.config"
<compilation defaultLanguage="vb" debug="false" />
change it to this
<compilation defaultLanguage="vb" debug="true" />
When you run the code in a production environment change it back though

, We have no add-ons for anything but accepting payments through paypal and 2checkout... if you want to accept payments through some other setup you have make a payment directory addon and write code to do it based on the system you are using..
We provide the ASP source code so that is doable for someone that is good with ASP. If not then it won't be doable. , Yes worked fine
thanks , right..
I had to open up the permissions to get it to work. I now have to go back and uncheck each one for directory listing.. :)
, yes, admins have access to absolutely anything...
as for the other question what you should do is only show links to people logged in that they have access to.. then they wont get logged out when they go to a page they do not have access to
for example if someone doesn't have access to a level 4 page dont give them a link to go there... you can do that by checking the session variables and creating your hyperlink html code accordingly .. using simple if-else logic... you could even make a hyperlink non-clickable and add some text to it like (no access)
it's all about taking the time to intelligently designing the different areas of your web site. It takes a bit of time and work to really make a system flow the way you want it to.
other than that it becomes extremely complicated to not grant them access when they go to a page they dont have access to but also keep them logged in. It is just not designed to flow that way. If someone goes to a page they do have access to they get logged out. It sort of has to be that way because of the ways things flow.
more info on accessing user info after login so you can do that http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo198-1.htm
another good thing to check out is the provided examples for mutliple access levels. You can see that if you log into the default page for that that it only shows you links to pages you have access to. Done with simple if-else logic around the html links. It is using groups but you can do the same sort of concept using groups. , Hi,
You see, an include file is no different then a link to an image or graphic. The path to the include file must of course be valid. That file isn't in the same directory as that page so you get an error.
You simply need to make the call to the include file valid.
See my article on server side includes. http://www.powerasp.com/content/code-snippets/includes.asp
You should also look at some of the provided example pages and see how the paths to the include files are done.
You can also use a virtual include if you figure out the page for that. See my article for the difference between a file include and a virtual include.
The code generator in the admin area shows examples of both but depending on your site structure the paths may need to be slightly edited.
Server Side Includes are a fundamental part of using ASP and they are used a lot. Once you understand how include files are used you will think it is the simplest thing.

http://www.minwar.com/24 , i will probably end up doing this myself, but dropping all the log data in a sql table would be nice as it offers much more flexibility on how an admin can keep track and use the data. Browsing through each log file is very inconvenient. I can search for text in the files (server-side, others with a shared server would probably have to separately download all log files first), but with the current method I don't have the following important options:
- cannot sort by any criteria
- quickly see a list of all login attempts by a specific user (i need to search each log file individually for this info)
if you had an option during setup perhaps (or elsewhere) in a future version that allowed an admin to specify the preferred logging method (separate files or a table in sql) i'm sure many admins would find it very useful to have a database alternative of keeping track of users becuase it would offer the two benefits listed above, plus more. , I dont understand why I would get an error? -- I'm not sending the email from internal - so why would it try to validate?
I'm trying to send an email to an independent place - just like I would send an email to you
Am I using the wrong email setting - should I be doing something other than using "remote server" , No luck...this is the message

My hosting company uses ASPEMAIL - and I am trying to setup the mailing settings on ASPPROTECT - but cant seem to get it to work. I've tried many different options - here are two that are the closest - but have issues:
1. If I use the settings:
email component: aspemail
Mail remote server: my internal server name
*no smtp authentication
email mail notification - my email address on my internal server
***I get the following results:
I can get get notified when a new user logs in, email a user from aspprotect user screen if they are in my company and have a valid email -- but I can not send to the outside world - I get an relay prohibited error.
2. If i try to change the setting to use the Hosting Website email server - I get the following results: I dont get notified when a new user registers, I cant send to internal company people - but I can send to the outside world.
**any suggestions on what to do? I'm trying to work with the people who manage the mail servers - but since I dont know anything about them - its a bit difficult.
[/QUOTE]
The relay error is because when you send emails outside your email domain smtp authentication is required.
I suggest trying to use CDOSYS with the smtp authentication option. CDOSYS is on all servers by default and is really the way to go. Use a real email account and password to send the emails through the server. Be sure to check smtp authentication for cdosys and to specify all that info for your email account and password in the settings screen.
