When adding a new user I am taken to a form.
There are several "required fields".
First and last names are 2 of them.
This is not needed by me and I need the company name as a required field instead. I work and deal with company names, not individuals.
So, i am unable to add any users due to this.
How can I either do away with the names as a required field or swap the individual names with the company name as a required field?
I have customers wanting to be able to view their own stats, but I need to do away with the required fields to work with my customer base.
-john , remeber too.. you might have to edit code you used on your existing pages in your site so they still call the "check_user_inc.asp" correctly.. though it may very well work out so it works the way it is at the new site
any redirection code you might have done may need the redirection urls changed if you used full domain urls..
things like that... etc etc etc,
sure (XP PRO), see my article on that

, IMPORTANT UPDATE - READ THIS http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=205& ;PN=1
The IPN Support Pack which is built in to ASPProtect 7 contains all the pre-built scripts you need to implement PayPal IPN with ASPProtect. IPN stands for (Instant Payment Notification). It allows you to set up scripts on your server so whenever a PayPal web accept order is processed the PayPal server sends info to your server regarding the transaction and vice versa. This is a fully automated process and allows you to charge users for access by the month or however long you like.
This Support Pack basically gives you an additional signup and registration directory "paypal_signup" and it should not interfere with any changes or customizations you have made to your ASPProtect setup in general. New users can register in this directory and pay for membership at the same time. Existing users whether active or expired can be sent to this directory where they can lookup their account and buy additional membership time online. You can also assign various Access and Group Levels during signup and you can set up various prices for various amounts of time as well. This is a real-time setup for the most part. As soon as a user pays via PayPal your system is updated and they will have access.
To use this all you need to do in ASPProtect 7 is enter your PayPal account name into the settings screen. It will be an email address. You'll need a business or premier account with PayPal and you will need log into your PayPal account and turn on IPN in you profile. They make you enter a default IPN URL. We do not use that so if you already have something there leave it there. If you dont have something there you can type in any the full url to any page on your server. It's probably best to send it to an empty ".asp" page or something.
Changing Payment Options
In the "paypal1.asp" file there are form options set up.
They look like this and you can have as many as you like.
<option selected value="30,9.95,3,">30 Days, 9.95</option>
In this option... A user has the option to purchase 30 days for $9.95 and he will be set to Access Level 3 when payment in completed.
Here is how it works.
The value setting (red) is essentially and array that can be made up 4 elements separated by comma's They must be separated by a comma and there can be no spaces. In this example the 4th value was not used but the last comma must still be there. If you didn't want to set an access level and left out the "3" there would 2 commas at the end. etc etc Basically there must always be 3 commas but you only have to set the 1st 2 values which are days and price.
days,price,access level,groups
The 1st value is the amount of days. The 2nd value is the price for the amount of days. The 3rd value is the access level you want to user assigned to. The 4th option is the groups you want the user assigned to. (see PayPal subscription thread for examples of specifying group info)
Now, the label for the option in (blue) can say whatever you like. cwilliams38421.7143981481, enjoy the bar.. drink one for me.. cause that was the problem..
, Yes, that worked... , Actually it is my own server (retired email server from my employer). I will check out the documentation again. I DID read that part, but didn't understand it enough. I'll dig deeper. Also my box has 2 CPU's, hence the $125 for ASPImage..., here is the next response to this which was emailed to me but should have been posted here
From: Mo Afifi Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2005 4:47 PM To: CJWSoft Support Info Subject: Re: CJWSoft Support Info : SSL - Verisign Certifcates
Hello,
Thank you for responding to my posting. In the second line of your response you said “not start them off at an http:// url". I think what you meant is to "not start them off at an https:// url". If this is your intention then I agree with you 100%. I have revised my pages so the users will go first to a non-https page and then make a choice either to use secure or non-secure access. Please note that the site is not intended to be completely SSL protected but only the sign up pages. I have another problem though when I click on the "Secure Log In" and enter my log in information; the entire subsequent URLs will have https:// in them which I could not shake off. As I said the intention was to use the https for sign in only.
I realize that this issue does not have any thing to do with your product, but any input will be appreciated. Best,
, Disallowed Parent Path
The Include file '../dataconn_inc.asp' cannot contain '..' to indicate the parent directory.
When you get an error like this it is because parent paths are disabled on the web server. This is a setting in the IIS console for your website.
If it is not enabled on you server you will have to ask your host to enable parent paths for your website.
This is what the settings screen looks like on an XP Machine

Additional Information:
It is enabled by default on IIS4-IIS5 but in IIS6 it is disabled by default. It is a minor security risk to have enabled and some hosts can be difficult about setting it.
Truth is, if your hosting ASP for customers you need to enable this setting if the customer requests it. Especially since 90% of the ASP applications out there require the setting.
Hosting companies should if they are serious about hosting ASP.
If they won't your only option is to go through all the code and convert the file includes to virtual includes.
http://www.powerasp.com/content/code-snippets/includes.asp
The trouble with virtual includes is they are different depending on the layout of your website. (that's why web application developers generally don't use them)
Basically if you are in a sub domain the path for the virtual include is going to be different then if you were in the root.. etc etc
Also.. someone developing on a local machine would need totally different virtual includes on the development server than they would on the live server. Server Side includes are processed before ASP so there is no way to make them SMART, so to speak. Server Side includes are hardcoded and that's that.
In my opinion virtual includes are pretty useless for commercial web based applications... Since you don't know where the customers plan to install the apps. And YES there are some tricks when designing the applications that make it less of an issue but they are not perfect solutions.
For example...
The virtual include below would work if the application or code was installed in the root <!--#include virtual = /somefile.asp"-->
But if the application or code was installed in a directory called "somedirectory" the virtual include directive would need to look like this
<!--#include virtual = "/somedirectory/somefile.asp"--> cwilliams38391.6033101852, thanks for posting this... Since "private" is the default setting from what I read and setting it to "public" cured the issue chances are leaving it at "public" is the way to go.

http://www.w3schools.com/asp/prop_cachecontrol.asp
ALSO: since you are one the few people that has ever contributed anything helpful to the forums I am going to reward you with a free copy of the password expiration mod. I am sending you a PM with the download info. , Its not a known issue.. I would try the original code before you made any changes and see if it still happens to you.
It seems to be working fine here for me in amy test web.
I am going to look into some more in the meantime.cwilliams38341.7166782407, Its not on their end. Using ASP alone you really won't be able to send more than around 300-400 individuals emails at a time before things will time out. Its just that ASP is not an efficient way of sending email and it never will be.
You really should look into worldcast like I mentioned before. http://www.fairlogic.com/worldcast/
Then just export the email list from the database into worldcast and send out the newsletters.
You will get much better results and perfect newsletters and it really only takes a little bit longer to do each time once you figure it out. That is how I send out my PowerASP and CJWSoft newsletters and it works perfectly every time. , Perfect exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks , that is because passwords in the import/export files are encrypted.. if you make one of your own you need to use the rc4 function in the "config_inc.asp" to encrpyt your passwords just like the aspprotect system does (requires knowledge of vbscript and integration into your export system)
now, there is a way around this
if you want to import a file you made with clear text passwords edit "import.asp" beforehand and change
If UserArray2(5) <> "" Then CmdAddUsers.Fields("Password") = UserArray2(5)
to
If UserArray2(5) <> "" Then CmdAddUsers.Fields("Password") = RC4(UserArray2(5), PasswordEncryptionKey)
that way it should convert your clear text passwords to encrypted while it does the import
this post also addresses this but in the reverse scenario http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=261&PN =1&TPN=1
I hope this helps you because I really do have to leave the office like right now. Very late for a dinner meeting.
I should be back on the computer later tonight or tommoro morning ,
My hosting company uses ASPEMAIL - and I am trying to setup the mailing settings on ASPPROTECT - but cant seem to get it to work. I've tried many different options - here are two that are the closest - but have issues:
1. If I use the settings:
email component: aspemail
Mail remote server: my internal server name
*no smtp authentication
email mail notification - my email address on my internal server
***I get the following results:
I can get get notified when a new user logs in, email a user from aspprotect user screen if they are in my company and have a valid email -- but I can not send to the outside world - I get an relay prohibited error.
2. If i try to change the setting to use the Hosting Website email server - I get the following results: I dont get notified when a new user registers, I cant send to internal company people - but I can send to the outside world.
**any suggestions on what to do? I'm trying to work with the people who manage the mail servers - but since I dont know anything about them - its a bit difficult.
The relay error is because when you send emails outside your email domain smtp authentication is required.
I suggest trying to use CDOSYS with the smtp authentication option. CDOSYS is on all servers by default and is really the way to go. Use a real email account and password to send the emails through the server. Be sure to check smtp authentication for cdosys and to specify all that info for your email account and password in the settings screen.
If you want to know about CDOSYS read my article. http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/sending_email_cdosys.asp , umm.. rename the pages to ".asp"
After all these are ASP scripts we are dealing with and the product is called ASPProtect.
The web site says it is used to protect ".asp" pages
And the directions tell you to put the protection code on ".asp" pages.
ASP can not run in ".html" pages
If you do not know basic things like this you should really learn the basics of ASP before you try to use the application. I would suggest a good book or two. ASPProtect is for people that have at least some experience with Active Server Pages. , it is an email server/setting issue most likely
your email server probably requires outgoing authentication or something like that and that is why internal emails can be sent to but nothing else
its something along those lines
this will help you see the real error instead of the generic 500 http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo11-1.htm , I have tried everything to get your CJWSoft code working..I purchased the auto listings software and I am stumped, and actually you stumped my hosting provider, my database is stored in the database directory on the root.
I have even tried your ASPtest and still cannot connect. My have connected other databases without an issue on this same host, I have named a DNS Auto for my database and ponted to that in my code but get the following error you see at http://www.burkesauto.com and even when i try you test script found here at http://www.burkesauto.com/asptest.asp . cwilliams38145.8522800926, Well, thats not normal. (it should work just like our online demo does)
Do you have everything turned on in the settings ?
Uploading needs to be enabled and you also have to pick a valid upload method. , Humm, Did you change something in a bad way? Thats my guess.
I need more information on what is going on because by default it does not do that ?
The only possible way I can think of that could cause that is if you changed things around too much and the config_inc.asp file is getting run/included twice on that page your logging in to.
Also, when you sign in "where" ? What page ?
cwilliams38456.0906712963, How to set a new users expiration date.
You'll need to edit the "users/add_new_account.asp" with a text editor.
Find this section..
<% CmdAddUser.Fields("ValidateEmailCode") = ValidateEmailCode CmdAddUser.Fields("Access_Level") = "" ' PUT YOUR CODE HERE CmdAdduser.Update ID = CmdAdduser("ID") CmdAdduser.Close Set CmdAdduser = Nothing ConnPasswords.Close Set ConnPasswords = Nothing %>
You'll want to add code like this right between the Acccess_Level and Updates section
CmdAddUser.Fields("Expiration_Date") = Date + 60
That will give take todays date and add 60 days to it. You can of course do whatever you want here.
Actually, any database value for the user can be set during registration.
You can also change the default Access_Level to whatever you like. cwilliams38403.6828587963, Sounds cool.. post info when you get it sorted out
thx
hopefully someday I'll get the new version finished.. I just never seem to have time. Lately ASPProtect takes up all my time and now aspclassifieds seems to be in need of a new version more so than asp photo gallery
, I am using VS 2005, when i go to new project in visual basic folder asp.net web application is not there..
Can i add it somehow? , no, but in the standard version it probably will not run so great with more than 75 or so.
The unlimited version can handle pretty much whatever., Just got back 10 minutes ago.. Missed plane yesterday because of traffic and the flight today was 3 hours plus 4 hours of driving
The fact that you are using Server 2003 is not relevant. I am very familiar with it and all my sites run on it.
The ASPNET account will be there by default once the .NET framework is installed. It won’t just show up in the list, you have to search for it like my article mentions.
http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/windows_2003_server_and_ permissions.asp
That error really means exactly what it says. You have to give that account permissions correctly. , When I add a user, I can not activat it.
What do you have the registration type set to in the settings ? They wont be activated automatically unless you have "automatically" selected ?
It sends me back to log on and will now allow me to log in as admin???
I am not quite sure I understand ? Seems to me like that would be normal because you can always log in as the admin at any time. If you cant log in as the user you just signed up as that could be for a couple reasons relating to the registration type you have slected in the settings. There are 3 types all epxlained in the settings screen. Some require manual activation byt the admin, some involve a registration email.. etc etc
I can restart the APP and log in as Admin, but the user I added is still not activated??
How and why are you restarting the applicaton ? Please explain what your doing there.
My system will also not allow me to set the Stay Loged in FLag. It just ignores it....
As I told you in an email earlier cookies must be enabled for authentication to work. You mentioned now you can not log off ? I am not sure I know what you mean by that. I assume you know to close all browser windows when testing things like this and I assume you know you have specifically log off and confim it in order to remove the remember me cookie and have to log in again when you return to the site. , I do not have any programming knowledge and have what might be a simple question.
I am having a hard time getting my hosting company to modify the rights on the data folder. They state they support ASP and access databases however this is the response I got when I requested the modify permissions set for the internet guest account:
Were the rights changed on the data folder? No, we do not manage rights to folders.
My question to you is: Doesn't supporting asp require those permissions be set on the database folder or can asp (not just aspprotect) work without those rights modified?
Thanks , Having a quality professionally set up ASP.NET server that is going to support your needs is CRITICAL whether it is yours or someone elses. Them saying they will not set permissions is useless. Quite honestly Network Solutions is a joke when it comes to ASP.NET hosting. They are all about CHEAP MASS HOSTING and that is not where you go when you plan on running complex ASP.NET applications. What good is ASP.NET hosting if you can not permissions set on folders you need it for? A lot of people run ASPProtect.NET and their hosts set permissions for them without issue. We made one folder that they could click on and set all permissions at once easily. If they truly knew anything they would understand that and set permissions for you in a heartbeart. You have to have a correctly set up server or a hosting company that is serious about your ASP hosting needs.
I mean you come to us with this mess of a situation, we tell you its a bad setup. We tell you to rebuild the server correctly or make a new one. Now instead of doing that you come to us with another mess of a situation. Now you act all frustrated because you have spent so much time on this. How the heck do you think we learned everything we know ? Do you think we have never spent weeks on a problem or stayed up for 4 nights in a row without sleep. That is how you learn and it is called experience. I have no sympathy for someone that complains about how long something took because I am right there with the best of them and I have paid my dues.
Have you by chance read all of this thread below because despite what you keep telling me you are totally falling into this category. http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo234-1.htm Granted you may not be "Joe Coder" but you are definetly "that guy" who doesn't really know what is going on with ASP.NET. "that guy" who sets up his own server and knows enough to be dangerous. You definetly have enough sense/basic skills to dig around and read articles and try things but when you are on the wrong track that only helps out so much.
Also: I really was pretty tired when I got home last night, but now that I really think about what you did with that webserver/domain controller is about the worst moves possible when it comes to IIS hosting setups.. That is just SO BAD !! Now, don't think that I haven't done some REAL stupid things in the past. John too, like the time 5 or so years back when thought he could make a Windows XP Pro webserver for serious non development use . Anyway, that is how you learn. I suggest you get your server running correctly (not a domain controller) or you get a real host like www.alentus.com for your asp hosting needs. I mean you can get an account for like 10.00 a month and end all these headaches right now. I even know one of the head techs there as well as the general manager. Their ASP and ASP.NET support is 2nd to none.
You may not like what I have to say, (hell, I can pretty much guarantee you won't) but I tell it like it is and in the long run you will be better off for it.. We spent a ton of time developing the .NET version of this product and we sell it way less than it is worth especially since we provide source code. It is an awesome product, but if the server isn't truly and correctly supporting ASP.NET or they host will not set permissions than it is out of our hands. As far as I am concerned anything else is a waste of everyone's time. I am not going to play that game. Quite frankly, you need to get your stuff together. Nothing you have come up with so far has anything to do with a bug with ASPProtect.NET. Everything has been server related.
QUALITY HOSTING !!! PROFESSIONALY AND CORRECTLY SET UP SERVER !!!
THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE !!! , This server is sitting in my den on a DSL circuit, so I don't have a hosting company. The install for Windows 2000 server is with default settings for all components installed.
I am not sure what you are referring to when you say:
"Does emailing work under the simplest scenario ? (directly from the users screen"
What user screen?
What settings are you referring to that I may have chosen? , They really have do not have anything to do with each other as far as code and numbering goes, but I really do not fully understand your question or where you are going with this. (the part about the user setup ?)
Groups are more powerful than access levels and are meant to replace them. Access Levels are only there for backward compatibilty with older versions. , Look in the "check_user_inc.asp" file..
You'll see the name of the cookie there and also get an idea how to access it.
In most versions it looks like this.
Request.Cookies("PASWORDSYSTEMCOOKIE")("COOKIE_USERNAME")
You'll want the cookie for the username because the session variable will not exist unless they have actually gone to a protected page during that session at the site.
It would probably be best the check for both the session and the cookie. That will make sure people logged in that arent using the cookie option still see the message you want to display.
Sorta like this..
GetUsername = "" If Request.Cookies("PASWORDSYSTEMCOOKIE")("COOKIE_USERNAME") <> "" Then GetUsername = Request.Cookies("PASWORDSYSTEMCOOKIE")("COOKIE_USERNAME") Else If Session("Username") <> "" Then GetUsername = Session("Username") End If
Response.Write GetUsername cwilliams38298.9175, question 2 is answered best here
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=319&KW =paypal
Ok, got it. Didn't know if there was something already set up for this that I was missing.
>>I should also mention that the paypals scenarios used in ASPProtect can not be tested using PayPal's sandbox.
Ok. Thanks.
>>Also test using two real PayPal accounts and on a live setup. (You'll allowed two paypal accounts) then you can log into the other and refund the transctions and of
course it makes sense to use low amount like 1 cent and what not.
Yeah, been messing around with
that. Got everything going except the return page which I can't
do until the site is live.
>>Also, I'd love to see what you came up with with the
integration. I have been working on it here as well and took it in a
different direction as I plan to sell directions for it as an add-on
for aspprotect.
Ok. Will email you with a username and password for access to the site once it's live.
Sounds like a great add-on for ASPProtect!
Thanks!
Michelle
, We do not support customization of the code or any custom coding you may end up doing with Visual Studio.NET. However, if you can show me that the application functions incorrectly in its default unmodified form I can help. If not it has to be something you did most likely.
Though I do not if it is the issue, mixing c# and vb.net in the same project can be tricky if not problematic. It’s definitely just not something I can support.
If you have not seen it we have tuturial on setting up the project in visual studio.net. http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo85-1.htm
I would suggest starting with a clean installation. Test everything to make sure the things you say are ok or not. (if not post here about it) Then try your hand at editing the application and compiling it. Keep the c# out of the mix at 1st.
I am not even sure if adding c# to the same project is feasable. (maybe it is , maybe it isn't)
That being said.. ASPProtect.NET can of course be used to protect pages using c#. But compiling the ASPProtect.NET project with C# code added sounds a bit iffy to me. We wrote the application in VB.NET so you really need to use vb.net when making changes to it. , I believe that solved the problem as I have not heard from this person since I sent him the code., maybe this is the issue...
do you realize that the descriptive name you give a group is not always going to be the same ID in the database ? The two are not related.
Perhaps what you named Group 1 is really group ID 3
You can tell for sure by generating protection code for group 1 and see what ID it tells you to use..
You also need to remember that you are testing this with different users and it is really easy to get confused so you need specifically log off using the log off page to ensure session info from the previous login doesn't show up and cause confusion when you log in with a different user... etc etc
in addition to logging off that way you may also want clear the session and application info via the code at the bottom of my article http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/displaying-session-and-a pplication-variables.asp
and do that in between any user you log in as , I am trying to import a file, and I get this error:
Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a03f9'
Expected 'Then'
/aspprotect/password_admin/upload_post.asp, line 6 If Session("Admin") <> "True"
-----------------------------^ Any suggestions on how to fix it? Thank you. , Its still not there as labeled 'internet guest'. There's a 'guest' and a host of others. Is there a way to identify it as the proper guest account to use with ASPProtect?
Also, looking through support documentation, I see other possibilities it could be (http://www.powerasp.com/content/hintstips/permissions.asp). Is there a way of telling which the problem is and whether we use a dsn connection or not?
The error we are getting is
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0x1340 Thread 0x17a4 DBC 0x162becc Jet'.
/aspprotect/scripts/populate_config_variables_inc.asp, line 11 , so you are using the subscriptions signup directory right ? "paypal_signup2" ?
1st.. I would check that the xml parser is working.
It is required for making the post back to paypal. It is installed on windows 2000 and 2003 and XP by default.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=134& ; ; ; ; ; ;PN=1
Then I would check the actual form page to paypal to make sure it is generating a valid IPN url as a hidden form value. It's the payment page you actually click on that actually takes you to paypal. For the subscription signup system that page is called "paypal1.asp"
You'll want to go through the process starting with the default.asp of the signup folder untill you get to that page. Then you want to look at the html source of that page in Internet Explorer. Your looking for something like this in the source code and you want to make sure it is valid.
<input type="hidden" name="notify_url" value=http://www.mysite.com/aspprotect/paypal_sub_signup/ipn.asp>
It also has to a url on the internet that paypals server can see. It can not be a local url for your machine. Also: If it is not valid we can try hard coding it.
If all of these things are good I'll have to take a look. I have some text file logging I can do when paypal hits your IPN url that can tell us if it is actually hitting that page like it is supposed to. And I can test the system for you by making some 1 cent payments using my own paypal account until we find out what is going wrong.
cwilliams38421.5686921296, You really should check out the documentation regarding the config file before you go any farther.
If the server supports ASP.NET you do not have to spend any money to have real fast loading thumbnails.
Also, licenses of ASPImage only cost 69.95 and regardless any quality host supporting ASP should have one of the 3 supported resizing components installed or else you should consider a better host like www.alentus.com Places like that have good hosting prices and give you access to 3000.00 worth of 3rd party asp components.
, Not a problem. Have a good time at your wedding.
thanks! ,
