So do I just replace the four folders that came with aspprotect with the four (in my case domain directory) folders in the patch or just move the files?, Sorry, you cannot, that is how it works and that is how it has to work for reasons I am not going to try to explain as it is pretty technical. (it works the same way even when not using paypal and using email authentication... nearly every registration system out there does it that way under an email authentication scenario or a PayPal IPN thing.)
Basically, if you are concerned about it you need to periodically manually check for accounts that were never activated and delete them. Maybe when I get some time some day I will make a little interface to help find those and clean them up at once.
,
Understood.... can you point me to a place where there are other methods of calling banners? Do you mean not use Flash? I am new to this and will need some pushing over the cliff!
Thanks
Dave , thanks!, UPDATE: read whole thread.. Version has been delayed
These are my personal notes on the new version of ASP Photo Gallery that should be out sometime in May/June 2004. Please ingore any typos.
This version may be more expensive than the current pro version as this is a major re-write and there will be a ton of new features.
Regardless, special pricing will be offerered to existing users.
If you see any features not listed that you think would be nice please post them here. We will of course consider them.
ASP Photo Gallery Version 4
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------
Finished Improvements:
new setup page makes setting up the data connection easier than ever it attempts to determine the possible data paths and makes suggestions for what to try when you finally get the data connection working it gives you a link to the admin area of the application so you can get started using the application
all database table names can be specified in the config_inc.asp file for advanced users that they may need to change the table names in the database.. helpful for sql installation where one sql database must be shared by many applications
new data folder is the only folder that needs permissions set before multiple folders needed permissions now everything can be put in this folder... database, logfiles, configuration files, picture upload folders... eventually all cjwsoft applications will do this allowing multiple cjwsoft applications to use that same folder therefore making it easier than ever to setup more applications without asking your host to set more permissions
new text based config file makes it easier to add new options to the program without making changes to the database structure... therefore the need for the configuration table in the database has been eliminated this also reduces system resources needed to load the config data for each page because it eliminates calls to the database for config data
added voice effects for data connection page, intro users page, and settings page
made it so ratings color was an option (red or blue)
fixed minor bug that wasn't showing fixed category heights when that was selected and am image wasn't originally sized that way during initial upload
changed logfiles dates so they always show up in the proper order 09 vs 9
added config option to change bit query value to 1 or -1 default it to 1.... this is a technical thing
added the extra options currently in the config file to the settings page so people do not have to manually edit that file any longer...
added new persits email option and authentication options to the settings page
added new CDOSYS emailing option
added support for dundas emailer
added support for ASPSMARTMAIL
fixed word filter so if it is empty it doesn't mess up also make editing it part of the main settings
made email functions include file and edited all page that email to use it
added css/style sheet support and removed a lot of the old font tags
seperated the settings page into sections because it was too big and confusing
added ability for text watermarking when using the ASPImage component
made the picture upload error message no longer mention browsers that do not support picture uploading as that is confusing people... and the problem is never that anymore
Made the ASPImage test page delete the bar graph before creating it so if it is already there they will not think it is working
added crystal ball feature to admin users screen... shows additional user info when you hold the mouse over it
Made search function highlight search word in results. Made the search function search the image description text files as well
Eliminated the guestbook directory as there was no need for the guestbook to be in it's own directory. This also simplified the menu.asp file as the guestbook section could be removed.
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------
Possible Improvements:
eventually make new and much better directions/documentation... html based for multiple reasons
Eliminate the need for parent paths to be enabled on the web server. (THIS MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE) Many hosting companies disabled parent paths and will not enable them for their users. On Windows 2003 Server Parent Paths are disabled by default.
make it so users ability to upload pics can be optionally disabled
possibly make some of the special functions in the extras folder built in to the admin area
Make the category picture uploader smarter because of the jpg gif issue when reuploading cat icons A jpg loaded over a gif.. doesn't delete the old gif graphic and vice versa
Reduce number of ".asp" pages in general.
Use more functions for redundant tasks.
Optimize all instances of the old filefound function which is using more resources than are necessary
option.explicit the entire application and get all the variables dimmed once and for all
possibly incorporate the new category system I am working on which allows for unlimited categories and levels also simplifies the heck out of the pages that call the categories
possibly add some cool image manipulation functions such as rotation for the various image components supported
possibly add the ability to move pictures around in an album. and maybe between albums I must also remember to move the ratings and desc as well for that image.
possibly add the ability to make individual pictures require approval
possibly add the streaming image ability (asp page called from image tag) I came up with as an option for people that can use it. this will better secure images in password protected albums and also possibly make it so images can only be viewed from certain urls.. and maybe make an interface for a list of allowed urls
improve the .net support to also resize the larger images.. currently it does not
possibly add a feature to store 3 versions of images uploaded thumbnail, medium res, and high res/original this will appeal to professionals or people that may want to sell prints storing a large version will be optional
possible support for multimedia content other than gif and jpg images
fix... url to link to.. problem on control pics page when both a jpg and a gif are present... which also relates to a another slight bug that needs to be taken care of
make interface in admin to listen to installed midi files and also to upload / delete them
possibly make per album guestbook... or call it something else like disussion or comments
add option to store the images orginal name in the images description area during upload may be helpful to people that name their images in a somewhat descriptive way
change approval settings so they work on a per user basis eliminate access levels from edit user screen and get rid of the level 4 stuff mentioned possibly add a per user option for individual pic approval as well if I get that feature implemented
add support for the ibulc bulk upload client that I recently discovered it is very cool cwilliams38325.8264583333, I get the following message when trying to look up the sysdiag.aspx and the default.aspx files. Why? I have followed all the install instructions.
Server Error in '/' Application.
Runtime Error Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Moving on:
ASPProtect using a industry standard concept called "Forms Based Authentication"
This primarily relies on session variables keeping track of login status.
Each installation must be in it's own unique "IIS Application" so it will have it's own set of application and session variables.
That is often not possible with shared hosting plans as the server admins may not be willing to set a folder in your web as a separate IIS application. You would need to ask. It is going to depend on the quality of your hosting plan whether they do it or not.
technically it takes about 1 minute to open up the "IIS Console" and set up a folder in your web as a separate "application"
Based on what you are telling me that you want to do I think it would make a lot more sense to have one installation and one user database and customize your sites so ASPProtect users that are part of certain "groups" have access to things others do not or see things on pages other users would not. That is after all the entire point of Dynamic web sites and also why ASPProtect has "groups".
Then as far as the registration differences go you would make a copy of the users area folder area and manual customize it to register users in an alternate fashion than the main "users" folder. And then send people there if that is how you want them to register.
I don't support customizations but that is the gist of it. It's really not difficult work, but you have to be good with ASP., If you have messed up the admin account or forgotten the admin password you generally should open up the database manually and add a new account or see what the old account is.
In version 7 however you have another option. Go through the installation instructions again. Specifically the part where you use the "get_me_in.asp" page to get back into the admin area by pasting in the password encrpytion keye you are using from your config file. , I encountered the same problem and eventually found out that my Norton protection was not allowing scripts to work so I had to uncheck the setting before the banners reappeared., I had both ASP Listings & Classified on the same website. The categories seem to be getting mixed up. I removed ASP Classified but classfieds categories is still appearing in the student of ASP Listing.
How do I fix this?
Thanks , Hello,
Sorry, I do not have any good ideas on this one... Domain Name Masking can cause issues with quite a few things.
cwilliams38366.3136342593, Done!
I was able to put my experience was based on *40 months* of usage! I
think I bought a version way back in 2001, IIRC, so it's been a long,
happy trip with ASPProtect for me!
, also, from looking at your site your ideal scenario would be a system that allows you to show all banners in one zone at any given time but in a different order.
ASPBanner is just not that sort of system. It is only designed to show one banner at a time from a given zone in random order., My guess is they are not going to allow you to run your own oledb connector out of your own personal bin directory.
I don't think your going to be able to modify aspprotect to work under
that environment very easily, but I would give 1&1 a chance to
explain their reasoning and they might actually be able to provide a
simple fix who knows.
I have never seen a situation where a host goes messing around with
.NET that worked out good for anyone. I'm sure they have a reason, but
the entire world writes code to work on the platform as Microsoft
shipped it not as someone decided was a better way to set it up.
, sure, there are reasons AOL would block the email.. it might think it is spam or it might not like the fact that fact that a cdonts generated email has no MX records because it can not..
for more on MX records read my CDOSYS article http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/sending_email_cdosys.asp
as far as the emails not being sent because notifications are off. I was not aware of that and will try to look into it.. Version 6 is no longer worked on but if I can find the time I will check that out
, They send an email?
Hope my spam killer didn't zap it...
, Chris -
I am encountering a problem with items showing up. When I click on a category and then select an item to view I get
THIS ITEM IS NO LONGER ACTIVE DO NOT CONTACT THIS USER AS THIS ITEM HAS BEEN TURNED OFF OR THE USER HAS SOLD THE ITEM.
I have verified the item has the item_active check. For giggles, I even unchecked with the same results.
Thoughts? , Oh big deal !!... John mentioned some site and you feel like you proved some sort of point. Aren't you special ?
Look, I am telling for the 3rd time you can't do what you are talking about with ASPProtect.NET. Are you braindead cause I really am beginning to think you are and I for one am done trying to be somewhat nice to you ??????
I am also willing to bet you had no idea what viewstate even was until I mentioned it and then you probably went and read up about it so quit trying to pretend like you know what is going on! If you knew what was going on you would not be asking more questions about ASPProtect.NET than any customer in the history of selling the application.
As a matter of fact you should send me like 400.00 just for all my time you have taken up because you are totally frigin clueless !!!!!
I should have cut you off the instant you offered me illegal software from p2p right in a forum post., well, you should probably be backing up the SQL database on a regular basis. That is between you and hosting company. If they let you connect via SQL Enterprise Manager you can do backups on your own.
As far as the aspprotect files and folders go back them up somewhere, and then only worry about backing them up again if you change some of the files.
That's really all there is to it. None of the ASPProtect files change on their own except the generated log files that you may or may not care about backing up.
I mean the important thing is the Database, and then of course any your own .asp pages that you protected as well as any custimizations you made to the users area or your site... , ok...
you got problems if you cant import a file created by the system..
You using SQL or MSACCESS and do any of the users data have apostraphes in it ? , Sorry, I guess you did say you finally found them. Regardless, sorry then, I tried
I dont know what else to tell ya.. except to search www.aspin.com
Perhaps you will find something you can use there. , Some users have reported an error during the registration process. Here is what I believe is happening.
When you register you get sent a validation email that has a link in it that looks something like this.
http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum//activate.asp?ID=testAD3AD2 97BC
That link can only be clicked on once which will activate your account.
If you somehow run that link more than once you will get a message telling you there was an error.
I think some people are double clicking on the link they get sent and running it more than once.... or clicking on it again after registration is complete. It probably happens very fast so they never see the success screen.
Either way, if you can login to the forum nothing is wrong and you are already activated. cwilliams38089.6248842593, Chris,
When I set up a test user name it does accept name and passwords and the passwords are encrypted, no problem there.
All I want to do is to restrict access to the protected pages to the members only. Only those users will be accepted and allowed to view.
I have entered all of thier names, address, phone number, email and company in the database, which is still named ASPProtect_access2002.mdb and in the fpdb directory of wwwroot. To get it there I uploaded via FTP. I hope I expained the situation well enough. , It almost seems like allow images is denied. When I look at the ad it doesn't even show a place where the thumbnail or image would go:
Columns now are Ad Name/ Price / Expires / Hits
There used to be one before Ad Name.
Even unchecked (saved) and checked
Use_Picture_Upload |
< = value=True name=Use_Picture_Upload> Check this if you will be using the picture uploading feature. |
, Using just ASP (Form Based Authentication) you can only protect the actual content of the ".asp" files.
You can however use some ASP tricks to stream other types of files to the users.
That way the actual file locations are never known and they can only get them/see these files when they are logged in as you would be streaming files to them after they logged in.
Below are informative links I have collected on the subject in an email I sent to another customer a while back.
Using Active Server Pages you can only protect ".asp" pages.
You can however password protect ".asp" pages that stream files to the user using code like in these examples therefore keeping the actual file name a secret.
And from another email I sent...
ASPProtect only protects the content of ".asp" pages. Directory protection is not possible using just ASP.
Other file extensions can not be protected using just ASP.
There are ways to get around this.
You'd want to do a technique like this to stream non ".asp" files to the users.
The safileup component from softartisans can actually do something similar as far as streaming the files go.
Then use something like ASPProtect to protect the ASP files that streams the files.
The actual location of the files is never known to the users and of they don't have access to the asp pages they can not see or get those other types of files.
Very doable, but nothing ASPProtect takes care of automatically.
This info above should get ya on track.
cwilliams38344.8751736111, I have narrowed it down. The ../ for includes will not work with .asp files but will work in .shtml files.
any ideas? , Hi,
That is not enough to go on. I need details in order to help. , I am using cdont to send email. what do i have to do send email to other display my full name instead of email address. In other word I want to see first name last name in their email client instead of email address.
thanks for your help
, Did you do what that thread said so you see a more detailed error ?
Can I see the site and look around.. ? I just am not sure what is going on from what you are explaining ?
If so private message me with the admin account details and tell me what to do to reproduce the error. , Not sure because of the nature of the javascript method
for starters tighten up the html around the banner call
change
<tr> <td width="460" height="60" align="center" valign="middle" class="imagead"> <!------- ASPBanner Ad code -------------> <script language="JavaScript"> var code = ''; var now = new Date(); var nIndex = now.getTime(); document.write('<s' + 'cript src=" http://www.nababaseball.com/aspbannernet/aspbanner/injectban ner.aspx?BannerZone=1&nocache=' + nIndex + '">'); document.write('</' + 's' + 'cript>'); </script> <script language="JavaScript">document.write(jscode);</script >
</td>
to
<tr> <td width="460" height="60" align="center" valign="middle" class="imagead"> <script language="JavaScript"> var code = ''; var now = new Date(); var nIndex = now.getTime(); document.write('<s' + 'cript src=" http://www.nababaseball.com/aspbannernet/aspbanner/injectban ner.aspx?BannerZone=1&nocache=' + nIndex + '">'); document.write('</' + 's' + 'cript>'); </script> <script language="JavaScript">document.write(jscode);</script > </td>
If that doesn't help I would suggest using the ASP 3.0 version of ASPBanner. It can serve banners to a any type of page extension and it runs just as well as the .NET version. There is a new iframe method for calling banners that you can try instead of the javascript. The iframe method is explained in the ASPBanner Unlimited section of the forum. cwilliams38150.6443634259, Thanks very much for the quick reply.
That sets my mind at ease
I was just worried if users would see warnings in their firewall software too.
I realize that the admin would have to have to go through some errors...
And since we are throwing things in here... Definately, if you have your own server you need a Hardware Firewall and a Managed one at that. The internet can be pretty dangerous for business if you don't.
Plus, I agree Black Ice although in it's heyday a few years ago was considered great. It is not suitable for todays standards alone even for the normal user (But, it is required by the company I work with for VPN. I think it's stupid too using old technology. I have 2 more firewalls setup besides that just so that I do have some security. And, that's just for my PC)...
Thanks , When I add a user, I can not activat it.
What do you have the registration type set to in the settings ? They wont be activated automatically unless you have "automatically" selected ?
It sends me back to log on and will now allow me to log in as admin???
I am not quite sure I understand ? Seems to me like that would be normal because you can always log in as the admin at any time. If you cant log in as the user you just signed up as that could be for a couple reasons relating to the registration type you have slected in the settings. There are 3 types all epxlained in the settings screen. Some require manual activation byt the admin, some involve a registration email.. etc etc
I can restart the APP and log in as Admin, but the user I added is still not activated??
How and why are you restarting the applicaton ? Please explain what your doing there.
My system will also not allow me to set the Stay Loged in FLag. It just ignores it....
As I told you in an email earlier cookies must be enabled for authentication to work. You mentioned now you can not log off ? I am not sure I know what you mean by that. I assume you know to close all browser windows when testing things like this and I assume you know you have specifically log off and confim it in order to remove the remember me cookie and have to log in again when you return to the site. , That was wrong of me but not what I meant. It seems as soon as I purchase something like this it doesn't work right and it can't be altered to work with what I have. The support ends up sucking or being none. Listen I’ve gone thru you're product and it's wonderful and does exactly what you say it does so that's a relief. Sorry about my ignorance with .NET but I’m from an ASP world and it's a lot different. You can see what I’m trying to protect here http://www.hotmixxent.com:8087/default.aspx. The final site after testing will be http://mxais.sfmx.org/default.aspx. Again thanks for the support on Christmas Sunday, that’s defiantly beyond the call and I appreciate it a lot. , My server is Server2003. I could not find the folder settings you mentioned. I did find a iuser which I added as specified. I retried to perform an upload. Still same message. But it does move the JPG to the picture folder. So, part of it is working. , Hello-
I'd like to set up the system to redirect to a landing page (say home1) after the user logs in.
I have looked at all the documentation and can't find something that explains how to do this. I am thinking that I can set up a log in as the default in my root directory that will have a form with an action=check_user_inc.asp. I have looked at the code there but cannot find a place where I would place a redirect to home1.
Help please
Thanks , I would look on the pictures folder on the server and see what is there for pictures. Also, when you see a broken X on the site right click and see where it is trying to get the picture from and what the pictures name should be.
I would also be sure to clear out your temporary internet files in IE. clost and restart all browsers..
maybe show me the site ? so I can see this happening ? cwilliams38348.9748726852, Just to put an end to this thread here is the solution for anyone reading.
The permissions were ok.
The data connection string never got edited in the "dataconn_inc.asp" file so it was invalid the whole time.
Once that was corrected the application ran.
So really this whole thread was over not following the directions and not editing the data connection string...
, "do you know a way around the BinaryRead problem with ASPProtect?"
Let me rephrase:
Do you know a way in which ASPProtect can be modified to get around the BinaryRead problem?
Thanks,
Michelle
, You can also try setting asphttp's user agent property to some browser version like in this example. It might stop that info from showing up when it fetches a page from the server.
<% Dim BanObj1Http Set BanObj1Http = Server.CreateObject("AspHTTP.Conn") BanObj1Http.UserAgent = "Mozilla Compatible (MS IE 3.01 WinNT)" BanObj1Http.Url = " http://banserver.powerasp.com/aspbanner/aspbanner_inc.asp?Ba nnerZone=1" Response.Write BanObj1Http.GetURL set BanObj1Http = nothing %>
Also... I dont know if these values below will work but I got them from looking at my nt logs.
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0)
And here is more info on the asphttp component and it's settings. http://www.serverobjects.com/comp/asphttp3.htm cwilliams38248.6481365741, humm, I dont know then..
If you want PM me your site info and I will go in and troubleshoot.
