Trying to make sense of this. I am still confused. In the file config_inc.asp. I found the setting for "uploaddirectory". That entry looks like this [UploadDirectory = CmdGetConfiguration("UploadDirectory")]. I assume there is a config file where the value of upload directory is located.
The settings in the config_inc.asp file have not been changed. they are set to the way it was delivered. Is there a document that gives instructions as to what and where the config settings are to be changes? , sorry your having so much trouble. A good host is a must.
Yes, that is most likely permissions related. http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo27-1.htm
You may want to read over my article on how permissions are set. It will give you a very good understanding of the process and may help yo when dealing with your hosting company.
http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/windows_2003_server_and_ permissions.asp
there is also an xp pro version of the article for people doing locl development and running iis on their xp box http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/windows_xp_pro_and_permi ssions.asp ,
it has been 3 days since I logged myself in under Admin, and all the user information on the User Activiy screen seemed to be gone.
is there any specific length of period it refreshes its user information??
, edited due to inappropriate content , ASPProtect v7 comes with working example code of protecting a file download.
This comes with the system as an example folder with some files in it.
(some of the initial purchaser's of the system might not have that directory.. if that is the case please ask)
Here is how it works...
Basically we protect the file download by only allowing a logged in user to download it. The special ".asp" page we use the stream the file is password protected. It also hides the true location of the file so you can keep your files out of your web or keep them in a folder in your web that does not allow file browsing. Under this scenario even if someone looks at the html source they can not tell where the file really came from and they can only download if they are logged in and you offered them the link to the file.
For the file download protection examples to work you may need to edit some values in the stream_download.asp file that are valid for your setup.
Look at the source. The values you can edit are commented.
Now, you also need to call a valid "download file name" from the download_link.asp file which is an example of how make a download link to the streamed download.
Lastly, we provide a working example. Now, you obviously may need to customize it to fit your needs. Please realize you are going to have to make special download links in your .asp pages and not only should you only show those links to people with appropriate access to download the files, but you should also protect the streaming download page accordingly as well as far as level, groups, and particular users. What I am saying is which files a particular user is allowed to download is not automatically handled by ASPProtect in any way. We give you all the tools to provide protected downloads to logged in users, but if you have complex needs you’re probably going to need to come up with a system that works for you. It's not really difficult because we did all the complicated stuff, but its something you have to sort out.
Perhaps someday in the future ASPProtect will have an interface to upload files and associate them with certain users. But at the moment it does not. , I'm using version 6 upgrade and recently some of the users complained that their passwords are no longer working. I was able to replicate the problem as I also experienced the same thing with my account.
Once I reset the password thru e-mail (Forgotten your password?), I am able to login but it fails later. This is weird as I have an identical copy of the code running flawlessly on my test server.
The only change which I made to the original downloadable code is by adding password encryption using Base 64 encryption.
Any ideas what might be the problem , Is there an easy way to make this work with reoccurring a monthly or yearly subscription? , I do not what see what this has to do with anything I sell ?
Those errors are all related to pages that have nothing to do with my ASP applications and code.,
- What kind of encryption do you use with version 7?
- If I purchase version 7 and use it on my site with a new SQL database then migrate the old records from version 6 so I can by-pass the issue with my home-grown Base 64 encryption, do you forsee other issues with the upgrade?
, Much thanks, the duplicate incl's I spaced on and should have caught. The hidden form variable was a key issue. Thanks for the syntax and the help. Now I get this page together. j As a note - I got faster results by dropping my timeout to 3 minutes temporarily while progging and cleared browser cache between tests. Thanks again. ,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I will consider editing the code. , I get this error, Any ideas?
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] '(unknown)' is not a valid path. Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides.
/guestbook/save.asp, line 109 , And I'm the one who finds those rarities! I'm not surprised.
Oh well...this should be interesting trying to get an 80 year old man to change his password.
Thanks for your quick responses Chris. This is still an awesome membership system!
Mick , Hi Chris
I've just recently purchased ASPBanner and have been testing out serving multiple Tradedoubler code using the IFRAME method. I have four types of banner on the same page refreshing every 15 seconds. (this will change on the live site)
I've been leaving the IE page up for x hours and coming back to find between 1-3 of the banners has stopped and in place is an "internal error".
BannerZone=3&Refresh=15|40|800a0046|Permission_denied 80
I thought it may have been the SQL permissions from one of your other messages so I gave the banner user the DataReader and DataWriter permissions.
Its still happening and around the same time in the logs theres a couple of file not found errors.
BannerZone=2&Refresh=15|23|800a0035|File_not_found 80 - 80.65.240.159
BannerZone=4&Refresh=15|25|800a0035|File_not_found 80 - 80.65.240.159
BannerZone=1&Refresh=15|25|800a0035|File_not_found 80 - 80.65.240.159
Any ideas? I'm hoping its not the server as there is currently only 2 sites on it and this is pretty much the only traffic.
Thanks
Colin , I have multiple zone banners displayed on a single page using the AspHTTP Component Method.
However, in IE 6.x and NS 7.x each banner has some text displayed before it similar to:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0 Date: Fri, 17 Sep 2004 07:15:12 GMT MicrosoftOfficeWebServer: 5.0_Pub Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Length: 229 Content-Type: text/html Set-Cookie: ASPSESSIONIDAASSDQBA=HAICCGCANEBEPANCDHLHJJGC; path=/ Cache-control: private
This text does not appear when using Netscape 4.x cwilliams38325.741099537, How can I make so it goes to certain webpages if user enters valid username and password??
I suppose user enters its information on check_user_inc.asp page, and username and password are stored on SQL database.
Thanks
, Hello,
Again, enspecified error are not very helpful. An error usually tells you at least a line number and page or something.
Please read this as it might help do tell me more. http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11& PN=1
As for only happening once in a while. It could be a lot of things.
Version being used (when did you purchase.. what name/email was it under and I can look) ? What banner method being used? Access or MSSQL ? How busy the site is ? Server Resources ? cwilliams38414.6114930556, It's seems to work fine after renaming the file, rebuilding the application, and editing the web.config file to point to login.aspx. It looks like I can use your fine product and thanks again for the help. It was unusually easy. Merry Christmas… , Suprising I started this tread off on ASPImage, but I resolved my issue and forgot to change the thread topic. I will try your suggestion.
, This post unfortutely needs to be here because this application has been the biggest pain in the neck for me you could possibly imagine. This is not because of problems with the application, but because of people's general lack of knowlegde regarding ASP.NET. This post totally voices my stance on what sort of knowledge you need to have and also the fact that I am not going to support anything but general installation on a correctly and professionaly set up live server.
ASPProtect.NET is a great application but using ASP.NET requires a lot more basic knowledge than using classic ASP and there are a lot of basic low level ASP.NET things that need to be set up correctly for an application like ASPProtect.NET to run. These are things I do not cover because you should know the ASP.NET basics when using an application as complex as this. It's just that I don't have time to nor should I have to teach people the basics of ASP.NET. I don't charge nearly enough for ASPProtect.NET to offer that kind of support.
So, I will say it one more time. ASPProtect.NET is targeted towards experienced Visual Studio.NET developers that know how to work with Code Behind VB.NET and are familiar with basic ASP concepts such as IIS application settings, the .NET framework, the aspnet_client folder, and the basics of the web.config file. If you are using ASP.NET for whatever reason you need to know about these things. The best way is to get some good books and do set up ASP.NET on a local development machine so you can start learning.
If you are one of the ASP.NET challenged let me say this as well.
Stick with Classic ASP. ASP.NET is a step in the wrong direction for the average user which I like to refer to as "Joe Coder". Classic ASP is very powerful and easy to pick up. ASP.NET is not easy to pick up and never will be for a lot of people. In my opinion it’s actually the wrong technology to use for anyone other than big corporations who need extreme scalability in their applications or for the hobbyist or object oriented programmer who just wants to use the latest and greatest. Ask yourself if you really want to deal with compiling Code Behind code each time you make changes to your web site as opposed to just editing some files in notepad real quick like you can do with classic ASP ? Do you have the money to purchase and use Visual Studio.NET or are you going to struggle with compiling all your ASP.NET pages using a command line compiler and a batch file ? Yes, you can build ASP.NET code that isn't code behind but why even bother if that is the case because your missing the point of ASP.NET if you do that and missing out on a lot of powerful new features and concepts.
When I do custom projects for bigger clients I usually end up using ASP.NET because they want to go that way and understand the time and money involved. When I do any of my own projects I use Classic ASP because the truth is you can still make some rockin busy scalable web sites with Classic ASP just like you can still make great web sites with CGI, PP, Cold Fusion.. etc etc. Look around the web because a lot of the biggest sites out there still use those scripting technologies and their stuff runs very well. ASP.NET is a lot of hype and although some things about it are plain awesome it is an environment best suited for real object oriented programmers, not the weekend code warriors.
The other thing to keep in mind about classic ASP is the shear abundance of applications and scripts available for it. ASP.NET can be expensive for that reason alone as there still is a shortage of good time tested applications out there and what is out there is always priced a lot higher.
In addition to that half of the ASP.NET applications out there are just half baked poorly converted versions of their Classic ASP counterparts. Is that the kind of thing you want to sink twice the money into or would you rather have something that runs well and has been tweaked year after year into a rock solid product?
To make things worse a lot of the hosting companies out there offering ASP.NET hosting are severely limiting the basic abilities of ASP.NET because of various security concerns. This means if you go with a Host that does that 75% of the asp.net stuff out there won't run on the hosted server. Isn't that wonderful ?
Now, Let's make things even worse. So far every time Microsoft has released a new version of ASP.NET a lot of things from the previous version have stopped working and needed to be modified to work correctly. Is that really something you will have the time, resources, and energy to deal with.
You may ask "but is classic ASP going to be around 5 years from now?" Though you never really know until the new version of windows server ships I say "Hell Yes" it will be. According to my sources at Port80 Software who work very closely with the folks at Microsoft (as well as many other sources out there) it will almost certainly be in Longhorn which is the next version of Windows Server. Longhorn probably won't come out until 2007 and will be popular for 3-4 years after that. The version of windows server after that will most likely support Classic ASP as well and if it doesn't I am sure there will be a way to make ASP run on it. If you really look around a lot of hosting companies are still running Windows Server 2000 which is 5 years old at the moment. The bottom line is Classic ASP helped put Microsoft web technologies on the map. Microsoft can not simply drop it because if they do they give up a dominate market share to the scripting competition being PHP, CGI, Cold Fusion.. etc etc PHP for instance a huge installed base on many platforms which are essentially free. ASP.NET can not compete with that in any way and not supporting Classic ASP would put microsoft in a bad position.
Take it from me. If you are a weekend code warrior/script kiddie. You'll be a lot happier sticking with classic ASP. You will also have save a lot of money and you can still have great web sites. There are tons of great applications out there in ASP and ASP still is and always will be the easiest scripting language to work with and learn. Better yet look around on sites like www.4guysfromrolla.com and see if you actually understand any of the latest articles. If it looks like Greek to you that is yet another sign that you should stick to classic ASP.
Personally, I will be focusing just as much time and effort on ASP.NET as I will on Classic ASP in the years to come for a few reasons.
- Because I sell software I obviously need to convert/re-write most of my appIications to work with ASP.NET. My living may eventually depend on it.
- Because I love using the latest technologies I want to continue to develop using ASP.NET.
- Because I do many custom projects for various clients using ASP.NET is a must.
- Because in some cases using ASP.NET over classic ASP makes total sense.
Just don't fall for the HYPE folks. I am one of the few established developers out there that has a set of Balls and is willing to put the truth out there and see past the bullsh*t. If you go ASP.NET do it because you seriosuly think you need the power and scalabilty and money and time is not an issue or because you are a hobbiest and object oriented programmer who likes working with and has time to work with the latest and greatest web scripting technolgies out there. I truly believe that so far ASP.NET is as much a success as it is a failure. I am sure some of you out there know what I mean by that.
All this being said you should also realize that ASPProtect.NET is a little different than your average ASP.NET application because it uses a lot of advanced ASP.NET techniques and you essentially use it to password protect your existing scripts meaning you need to integrate your stuff with our stuff in a sense. If you just go buy some random ASP.NET application like a classifieds system or storefront it is probably just going to run on it's own an therefore will be a lot easier to set up and deal with.
Here are some links you folks should read as well. http://rtfm.atrax.co.uk/infinitemonkeys/articles/asp/905.asp http://www.itnewsgroups.net/group/microsoft.public.inetserve r.asp.general/topic2074.aspx http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;%5Bln%5D;L ifeWin
Chris Willians http://www.cjwsoft.com/about.asp , I am trying to protect and ASP page written in Javascript. The first part of the page goes:
<%@LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT"%> <!--#include file="../Connections/connWINGAP.asp" -->
When I insert the aspprotect code it looks like this:
<%@LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT"%> <!--#INCLUDE VIRTUAL="/GIS/WCGIS/GISProtect/check_user_inc.asp"--> <!--#include file="../Connections/connWINGAP.asp" -->
and I get this error:
Microsoft JScript compilation error '800a03f7'
Unterminated string constant
/GIS/WCGIS/GISProtect/check_user_inc.asp, line 2
I think I understand that your code is written in VBscript and that is why it is not working. If this is the case, how can I switch to VB to execute your stuff then switch back?
Thanks,
Jess , also.. every once in a while I get some nervous person concerned about security... and the pros and cons of having parent paths enabled.
etc etc etc
so let me add this bit of info..
I don’t know what your hosting company will say because it is an iffy topic and those that understand it have a hard time explaining it to someone who doesn't. Also usually the hosting company doesn't have a clue except they heard it was a security risk.
Here is the low down from someone that really understands it... (well, at least I think I do)
The only real security risks are from YOU and possibly other people hosting on the same server if they have parent paths enabled that is.
Meaning your site visitors can't possibly do anything with it unless of course you let them upload and run their own asp files to the server.
Anyway.. if YOU run malicious asp scripts you could potentially attack other sites on the server and look at things you shouldn't. As could other sites on the same server do to you I suppose.
So, unless you plan on doing that or some other site admin on the server does it to you its not really a concern. Just an advantage in coding abilities.
If you attack someone elses site on the server or lurk where you shouldnt then you are probably violating your hosting agreement.
99% of the time everyone gets all nervous over nothing.. half the people nervous about this have sites nobody would ever want to hack anyway.
Many people with a really important/busy sites are going to have a dedicated server somewhere so the setting is not relevant..
The hosting companies of course have to warn you.
This setting was enabled by default for years on IIS4-IIS5. I never once heard one single real story about anyone attacking anything because of this setting. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen but I am just telling you what I know.
This is all my opinion so take it for what it is...
If you are a Hosting Company your better off turning it on at the customers request, giving them a warning about it, and in turn having happy customers.
The big hosting companies like Alentus and MaximumASP do it...
There are far worse things than this to let people do after all.
Beleive it or not I have actually been in servers where they gave the anonymous webserver acount modify permissions EVERYWHERE yet they disabled parent paths ???? cwilliams38391.6024189815, Okay, thanks, I'm going to change the method tonight and see if it makes a difference
I'll report back
Dave , I dont get it.. I am still looking into it..
I think this has something to do with your original experience when things would work and then not work.
something weird is going on , Just wanted to let you know that after modifying the remote host string in the email pages and getting the correct connection from my server, everything is running fine.
I hope you enjoyed your vacation.
thank you adam , For all you advanced users..
Here are two examples of ASP.NET code you can use on your ".aspx" pages to call banners from the ASP 3.0 version of ASPBaner Unlimited V8
This code is not supported... and you of course must change things accordingly like the variable names and zone numbers to match the zone you want to call banners from as well as the url.

cwilliams38226.6523263889, That's excellent!
I did learn that parent paths were disabled on my test 2003 server...
But on the hosted server, it looks like parent paths are supported as I change the file location of the language file in the forum common.asp as such, and obviously moved the file as well:
from:
<!--#include file="language_files/language_file_inc.asp" -->
to:
<!--#include file="../language_file_inc.asp" -->
Everything seems to work fine and I thank you very much for you quick response!!!
Ok, time to buy...thanks again!

, Chris,
When I set up a test user name it does accept name and passwords and the passwords are encrypted, no problem there.
All I want to do is to restrict access to the protected pages to the members only. Only those users will be accepted and allowed to view.
I have entered all of thier names, address, phone number, email and company in the database, which is still named ASPProtect_access2002.mdb and in the fpdb directory of wwwroot. To get it there I uploaded via FTP. I hope I expained the situation well enough. , It is not something I did when I wrote the emailing sub routines. You would have to edit the email sub routine for CDONTS and add something to it most likely. The email sub routines are in the "scripts" folder in the "emailing_subs_inc.asp" file.
I am not sure you can do that when using CDONTS though I think you can do it with CDOSYS. You would have to do some research and edit the code like I mentioned. , My Admin user got corupted, and I need to reset the password and user, what is the defualt password for this database, as I do not think I have changes this (hopefully) as of yet.
Regards,
Paul , Yup, thats the problem I was having. I can get it to work if I don't do through the dl stream, but otherwise it prompts to save or open it instead of loading it in the browser.
I did read the change on making the content public instead of private so I think that will work for know...
, Not sure how to response.write the session variable, I am using ASPProtect's password program, which has been very successful, for managing over 1,500 military veterans' memberships at http://www.vspa.com. What I am trying to do now is utilize the "Groups" code, as generated by the Admin page, to prevent members with expired accounts (and non-members) from accessing restricted "members only" .ASP pages they may have bookmarked, or found via web search. The code generated and used is as follows:
<%@ LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %> <!-- Begin ASPProtect Code --> <!-- Groups with access to this page. ( * ADMIN * Member Current * Member Life * Officer/Staff * ) --> <% GROUPACCESS = "10,12,14,19" %> <!--#INCLUDE FILE="check_user_inc.asp"--> <!-- End ASPProtect Code -->
The above is placed over the <html><head> statements on the page.
When I am logged in the code works perfectly! When I log off and try the URL again, the page appears in its entirety but with a Login box for Username and Login Password at the top of the page. You may view the problem at: http://www.vspa.com/aspprotect/vspa-password-enter.asp .
What I would like to have happen is expired members and non-members would be sent (or Redirected) to a Login page. I do not want the Login password box to merely be inserted above the page that I am trying to keep them from visiting.
Don Poss, VSPA Webmaster , I think you getting all confused about dsn's and what they really are.
A system dsn gets created via the ODBC control panel and gets listed there. A system dsn is nothing more than a registry entry telling information about where the database is an how to connect to it. Then every time code accesses the database it has to do a registry lookup. The whole process adds a lot of delays, causes very poor performance and is unnecessary.
A dsn-less connection simply connects directly to the database by specifying the driver being used, where the database is, and some other information like the password if there is one.
To get aspprotect or any other ASP application using a database all you have to do is make sure the database folder has correct permissions and then make a connection string like so. (with the correct info for your directory structure of course)
DBQ=c:\inetpub\wwwroot\aspprotect_6\data\database\ASPProtect _access2002.mdb;Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};UID=Admin;Password=temp
If you are wondering Access databases always use the same username.
So, basically if permissions are set correctly and the directory is valid it will work. It is really that simple. 99% of the time when people have problems it is one or the other.
That being said, don't worry about the odbc control panel and what is listed there for connections. All we really care about is that odbc drivers are installed and somewhat current.
One last thign for reference: even if you do make a system dsn the database folder still needs the correct permissions. cwilliams38417.7371643518, upgrade pricing is here http://www.aspbanner.com/purchase_unlimited_v8.1_classic_upg rade.asp
what is different http://www.aspbanner.com/v8_notes.asp
the changes to make it work with MySQL were vast to say the least more on that from an old thread http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=37&PN= 1&TPN=1
just please remember use of MySQL is just not supported http://www.aspbanner.com/mysql.htm
I can assure you it works well as I have people using it
, Hi,
I wanted to see if you had any suggestions for converting from Access to SQL sever database. I attempted this earlier today performing the following steps.
1) Create SQL Tables using Enterprise Manager / SQL Scripts 2) Use DTS to move all of the existing table data to the sql tables. 3) Update dataconn_inc.asp to use SQL and the required connection string.
When these steps were complete I was able to login to ASPProtect as an admin and search / find both groups and users. However, any attempt to edit or create users resulted in a "the page ... had a problem ... " type problem. It seems that I can read from the db fine but and getting errors writing to the tables. The user id that is being used to connect to the db is the [dbo].
Any additional hints for this procedure?
Thanks
Darrell , You shouldn't be renaming or moving anything... unless you really really understand what you are doing and are at an expert level expert as far as ASP coding goes.
like I said earlier.. http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=354&ge t=last#1130
redirecting with version 6 is not supported but this thread tells you exactly how to set it up (I showed you this thread in an that earlier post)
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=17&KW= redirect
This thread below may also help in case the page you want to start on with a login form should not be password protected..
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo18-2.htm , re-edit the banner to ensure your change was saved..
if it has been written to the database thats good.. if not it is a data connection issue most likely..
if it did get saved... though it usually should not take time to apply it make take up to an hour for the change to take effect in the actual banner rotation.. give it a little time, I have no idea.. perhaps PM me info on how to log into your site and reproduce the issue., I just upgraded from 6.0 to 7.0 primarily because we were limited in the choices of email systems we could use to send an email validation message.
Previously, with 6.0, we were using CDONTS to send an email validation message to new registrants. Unfortunately, AOL email addressee's were not receiving the vaildation email from us. I received a reply to another post I made on this forum that the problem was due to the fact that aCDONTS generated email has no MX record and AOL blocks non-MX record containing emails.
Well, I upgraded to 7.0, switched to CDOSYS (Using SMTP Virtual Server) with SMTP Authentication and it appears that AOL is still blocking the validation email.
Any suggestions, comments?
