Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 4:53:31 PM

Sounds crazy. I recently took over this web site and all IT duties. User today said member area was not working. All pages would not display. After restoring some files I got the members area partially working. But I cannot find where the database sits. I am able to get in and view users in the admin are and log in as a member. Thanks., ok, that does not work but that still is not enough to help me troubleshoot.

I'll probably need to look around in your admin area and check things out in order to figure anything out.

I will also need to see the protection code you put on that page exactly as it appears.

PM (private message) the admin usersname/password to me if that is ok with you and I will check it out

it's really the only way I can help with an issue like this. I have to make sure you didn't do something wrong and then go from there ,

No I didn't...

The one I tried is the hosted one at my provider which I gave you the link for.

Thanks very much.  I will get that one and it may be much easier if I need to get into the Nitty Gritty of the database at some time.

Thanks

,

umm.. rename the pages to ".asp"

After all these are ASP scripts we are dealing with and the product is called ASPProtect.

The web site says it is used to protect ".asp" pages

And the directions tell you to put the protection code on ".asp" pages.

ASP can not run in ".html" pages

If you do not know basic things like this you should really learn the basics of ASP before you try to use the application. I would suggest a good book or two. ASPProtect is for people that have at least some experience with Active Server Pages.

,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I will consider editing the code.

Regarding hosting companies..

Now.. obviously if you are hosting on someone elses server you may not be able to set permissions like this.

Ultimately, if you are hosting somewhere and ASP and Database connectivity is part of your hosting plan. It is the hosting company's responsibility to set these permissions for you when asked or to give you a special interface to do so on your own. If they are not helping you do this then maybe it is time to get a hosting company that is serious about your ASP Hosting Needs.

Also... JUST TO BE PERFECTLY CLEAR

The permissions we are talking about cannot be set via FTP or Frontpage access to your web site. They must be set like shown above or via a special interface meant to set the permissions correctly. For all you people out there messing with the permissions you see in FTP and Frontpage.. you are wasting your time and possibly creating problems in your web.

All ASP scripts that communicate with an Access Database, Upload Pictures, Modify Text files.... are going to need these permissions set in some way or another. We have no control over that fact.

cwilliams38360.69125, You are right.
I have SQL server.
From August to today I have used a very simple login system and now I come back to you for better.
I can insert, edit, delete  users but it happens what I mentioned in my first message.
, Not sure what you mean about the path to the IIS files being wierd...what else should it be?  The wf directory is the root of the aspprotect stuff for this project.

I assume the permissions need to be read, write at least.  I was looking at the permissions dialog from a file explorer and I see a web sharing tab and a security tab.  I look at the security tab but I am not really sure which type of user I am looking for to add and give permissions to so that I can get it right.  Maybe that is not the right place to set the permissions....

Sorry to be "windows challenged" but I am not super familliar with all the different places to set various permissions for OS vs. IIS.  I looked in the "Internet Services Manager" and browsed to the logfiles directory and looked at its permissions...is that the place to set things up?  I see a "directory" and "Directory security" tabs...which is the important one?  I made sure "write" was checked and went to the directory security tab and enabled anonomous access....still no logs are showing up. Restarted server a bunch of times to make sure it took the permission settings.  I logged in and out correctly and incorrectly to see if a log would be generated but no luck.

The physical path to the logfiles directory is set correctly in the setup tab in aspprotect... sorry to still be baffled.

How do I know if the filesystem object is disabled on the server??  I can copy and paste things in there...

Thanks!!

upgrade pricing is here
http://www.aspbanner.com/purchase_unlimited_v8.1_classic_upg rade.asp

what is different
http://www.aspbanner.com/v8_notes.asp

the changes to make it work with MySQL were vast to say the least
more on that from an old thread
http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/code_info.asp?TID=37&PN= 1&TPN=1

just please remember use of MySQL is just not supported
http://www.aspbanner.com/mysql.htm

I can assure you it works well as I have people using it

, Oh snap. Tried the blank database and got the same errors. Fixed THE FILE PATHS to conform to the AspProtect 7 setup, and it worked like a champ. I still need to copy and paste the info, but it's working just fine with the ones I add manually.

Moral of the story: FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER.
,  I moved the password check file out of /user and am getting this message:

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0400'

Expected statement

/asplog/check_user_inc.asp, line 404

End If
^
Is this a standard database connection error so I should ask my IIS to make sure permissions are correct?
Thanks..!
, Has this been resolved ?, Unfortunatley, I dont have an easy answer for you. It is certainly doable but adjusting the code so people assigned to certain groups get specific expiration dates means a lot of code work and time. It would probably even take me a long time to figure out.

The fact that users can belong to more than one group also greatly complicats the whole idea.

You can certainly assign an expiration level when someone signs up. That is easy and explained in the forums. ,

That would be great.

I am sure you know that many virus that are sent via email have the same property. (double extension). The code can be executed even though Windows identifies them as simple text files etc.

Thanks again

,

Hi,

I need to be able to add about 9 checkboxes to the register.asp. would I be able to use one of the custom fields?

The other thing is once I add the checkboxes the value must be written to the DB and later read when displaying the person's Album.

Any idea on how I can do this.

Thanks

,

humm, yea thats a data connection error..
really not related to the asp code in the application for the most part.

that is low level

If using MSACCESS

I would make sure permissions are set correctly on the database folder (not just the database file itself)

I would make sure your using at least a 2000 version of the database. 2003-2003 format being better..

I would make sure the server has up to date mdac/odbc drivers.. (that is really the server admins responsibility)

As for permissions there are articles in our forums about exactly how they need to be set. Improper permissions can cause a ton of random errors like that.

cwilliams38414.6528240741,

you have to check the session variables for groups a little differently.. info on that is here

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo198-1.htm

, You kid around again regarding illegal downloads and not only will you be banned from the forums, your support will be cut off completely.

, Flash files cannot track clicks unless you edit the original flash file to link to the aspbanner system redirect URL.. feeding it the correct ID of the banner.

When that link is clicked on it will then track the click and redirect the user to the “link url” specified for that banner.

The system actually generates the necessary ASPBanner URL for you. That link is shown on the banner edit screen.(you must save the banner at least once and come back to that screen to see the link though)

Really the best way to show it is with an example as seen below.

Basically the flash banner file "powerasp.swf" highlighted in green needs to be edited to link to the banner redirect url which is highlighted in red.... the banner redirect url will then track the click and ultimately send the user to the Link_URL highligthed in blue.

All banners systems work this way when it comes to flash files.
It’s the nature of flash and the web browser,

The flash source code must be edited to link to the redirect url in the ASPBanner system. There is no possible way any banner system can track a flash click unless the flash file links to the banner system 1st.... because that click is handled by Flash and the web browser.

In some cases if you do have the original source file for the flash banner then you are out of luck as far as tracking clicks goes.

On a side note... if you create flash banners the way this article says you can actually feed a .swf flash file a link for it to click to. Instead of it being hardcoded.

http://www.macromedia.com/resources/richmedia/tracking/desig ners_guide/index.html

This is really the way everyone should design their flash banners from now on because the url it links to can be easily changed at any time without editing the flash file source code.

cwilliams38325.740162037,

This first one may be an obvious one, but is it only .asp files that I can protect as in no HTML files.

Can the program be set to protect my whole https directory contents (though the answer to the last question may have bearing here - there are html files as well as .asp in there) as in http://secure.mydomain.com

Thanks in advance

, I posted this in the wrong forum. Sorry.

I have installed ASPProtect on a client's website and I have been notified that some of their customers have been unable to login to the protected pages.

On testing it seems that the issues seem to be related to how cookies are being stored by IE 6.

ASPProtect is being used to protect particular template files within a Content Mangement System. 90% of the time it is working fine but on the odd occassion particular cutomers are unabe to login.

After quite a bit of testing I have managed to find the scenario in which it starts to have problems and was hoping you may be able to provide a solution.

If a customer enters the wrong password, then reenters the correct username and password, they receive a message "template can not be found" from the Content Management System. This message is generated when a url is entered that contains a link to a template file that does not exist. In this case the template does exist. If I remove the ASPProtect code the page opens without error.

Everytime they re-enter the details they receive the same message.

If they close down the browser and then reenter the correct details in some instances the page will open correctly.

More often than not, they have to delete cookies and temporary files and  close the browser. This seems to fix the problem again for most users. For users who's web access is heavily cached by an internal server, even this does not work.

Have you come across this problem before and can you suggest a remedy.

If you can email me privately I can give you the URL and access codes.

Thanks,

Stuart ,

Sorry, I forgot about that when I got hung up on the install problem.

I'll tackle your explanation now to see if I can get it working. Since I already bought the software I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks

, >>1. What is telling paypal to return the info to the ipn.asp page for processing?  Is that something I have to set up in my paypal account?

Nevermind on this question.  I found the notify_url variable.  :-\

Thanks,
Michelle
, I would like to change this file name to the typical Login.aspx, how to do this? I have a VS 2003 but need instrutions if that's the route to go., I have found the alternate databases and they do not work either. I then went back and changed the database path in the asptest page to connect to the 2000 and 2002 test databases and it connected successfully to both of those databases, just as it had successfully connected to the asptest.mdb., Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Even though I have a big disclaimer that the account is totally worthless without someone paying to activate it, the new IDs keep coming, about 3 a day.
,

Something very strange is happening.  Some users can't see the classified ads in their browser.  This is specific to the user's computer, and they can check other computers and see it fine.

In each case, the user is using windows explorer 6.0 browser with windows xp.

they can't see the ads listed on the ads page, but they can see the categories.

also, they can't see the place ad link on some pages.

Do you think that their browser is blocking the javascript for the mouseover message?

thanks.

,

Have you thought about language file so users dont have to go into the code to put it in their language??

,

I think this addresses your question

http://support.cjwsoft.com/code/moreinfo144-1.htm

,

you do not run "check_user_inc.asp" by itself

Pages you protect include that file at the top.. when they someone goes  to a protected page if not logged in a user then sees a login prompt..

after loggin in they see that same page as normal

its an automated process..

now, that being said if you really want to you a specify a page to be redirected to after the 1st login when you edit a users info. You can also redirect anyone anywhere like using a simple ASP redirect statement in your code.

Personally I feel that redirecting people all over the place is poor site design. ASP is all about dynamic code and ASPProtect is all about dynamically tailoring pages to the current logged in users... so why redirect people all over the place.. it justs complicates things because you still need to password protect the places you send them to.... which means twice the work and twice the confusion.

Also, here is a Version 6 thread about redirecting manually that still applies to version 7.

,

The count is in the album area where the small pictures and description of album.   Viewed 1 time(s)  This count never changes.

Thanks

 John

, yea    that info gets updated once an hour,

You should not have single quotes around the "-1" because Album_Active is not a string field in the database. It's true/false or bit field in the database depending on the database you are using (MSSQL or ACCESS)

I'd do it a little more like this I think.

SELECT COUNT(Album_ID) AS Alb_Count FROM " & tbl_label_albums & " WHERE User_ID = " & CmdListUsers("User_ID") & " AND Album_Active = 1"

I took out the parentheses as well since I dont believe they are needed in a simple case like this

but is hard to say unless your the one testing it... my version might have a mistake as I am a little rusty with my SQL at the moment

also: in case your wondering...
depending on the situation and the odbc drivers the 1 and -1 should work either way but sometimes it's picky and you have to do it one way or the other

cwilliams38433.0564930556, Aggh..  I put passwords instead of password.  Sorry to have bothered you, works fine now. , Can you be more specific on the javascript I should look for? Can it be combined with ASPBanner?,

Not a problem.  Have a good time at your wedding.

thanks!

,

ok, then I need more information.

Was the code changed ? Thats the big one. If it worked and now it doesn't something must have changed. Things just don't stop working on their own. I would try putting the original files back in there for everything but the config and dataconn files just to make sure and see and if it works with the original files. (back up your old ones 1st so you can copy them back of course)

Also, perhaps PM me the site info so I can go look as well.

,

I finally spoke with someone who knew what I was asking for and they set the rights and all is fine.

Thanks for your help. Wish all business' had customer support like here

, Did you do what that thread said so you see a more detailed error ?

Can I see the site and look around.. ?
I just am not sure what is going on from what you are explaining ?

If so private message me with the admin account details and tell me what to do to reproduce the error. , Best setup I recomend is just setting up a rig and making a workgroup. No real reason for a production machine to have any access to internal security when you think about it.

classic asp should be pretty easy to move, just set up new webs and dump the scripts in there. If you have 2 machines its always easier to look at the one while your building the other. Basically copy the setup and tada... the only thing you might need to remeber is components (if your using any) and thats usually not a very big deal either.

Point sort of being at some point your going to have to change that thing around and while its no fun you have to imagine now is a better time to bite the bullet and get it set up the right way. Your alternative is to mess around for hours and hours praying that you change domain wide security to the point that running NET apps on that domain controller works. Personally I wouldnt sleep well knowing I had just messed around so bad with the OS that I had no clue what bugs and security holes I might have accidently opened in the process. I wont even get into the possible things that might stop working on the rest of the domain if you fiddle with accounts like "Network Service"

Oh and if thats not enough reason to make you think about it, consider how hard it will be to try and rember what you did at 2AM 6 months from now if that machine takes a dive or some critical update undoes what you changed.

I feel for you though, trust me we have all been down that road once or twice. Get some sleep and in the AM the task at hand wont seem nearly as bad. You live and you learn, and you will definatly be WAY better off making things right sooner than later
