I am having difficulty properly securing pdf's using 7.x
I used the example file and have been able to secure images and word
docs, but the pdf's give users the error "There was an error opening
this document. The file cannot be found."
The kicker -- it works fine on my computer, just not anyone else's. I
put a link up to the same file without any security and that works on
everyone's computer. The word file links and redirects work too. I've
tried my log-in on other computers, then attempting to download the pdf
and that doesn't work.
The client wants a site where users must register before downloading
pdf's. They should be able to view all the pages without registering.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. But I can't complete the site until this issue is resolved.
Help appreciated.
, Your going to have a lot of problems and a lot of the code will have to be re-written.
There are a lot of things in the the code that the MYSQL database system does not support or has issues with . I know because I once made a version of ASPBanner work with MYSQL and it took weeks of work to get it stable.
Null field types can cause problems... but mostly ADO updates which I don't think MYSQL supports at all. All of the ADO stuff would have have to be rewritten.. etc etc
That's probably why you cant get much of the code to write to the database.
Here is a generic example.
An update to an existing record using ADO http://www.powerasp.com/content/database/ado_update.asp
And update to an existing record using an update query. http://www.powerasp.com/content/database/using_update.asp
All through the the code the ADO updates would have to converted to update queries which means a lot of work.
I used ADO a lot because I like it and it is little easier to validate data before it is written to the database.
It is also a little easier for customers to understand when they look at the code.
Anyway....
The app just was not designed to work with MYSQL. It was specifically designed to work with MSSQL and MSACCESS only.
This holds true for all of our applications.
Your running off an IIS 5 Server so I would suggest just using MSACCESS as the database. The Photo Gallery app will run very well using MSACCESS. ,
sorry.. you just said above you were using XP SP2 so that is the article I referred you to as I just assumed you were talking about your local web server
here is my article on permissions regarding server 2003 http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/windows_2003_server_and_ permissions.asp
I can look at your installation monday if you like. In about an hour I leave for a wedding thingie and I wont be around again untill monday around noon
Try the uploading using VBSCRIPT method just for the heck of it. Perhaps there is an issue with the installation of the dundas component.
CJW
, thats intertesting.. I have never heard of the concept until now..
I did a search for ASP examples or ASP components that can help with the process and just couldn't find anything about it., You are right.
I have SQL server.
From August to today I have used a very simple login system and now I come back to you for better.
I can insert, edit, delete users but it happens what I mentioned in my first message.
, Its a great idea. I didnt really check the counter until the album started working. Its a great concept though., The problem with that is when a user deletes an album, the album record does not get deleted from the DB, so counting all the records would return the accurate result. :(
Any hints? eeye38433.0290740741,
Best setup I recomend is just setting up a rig and making a workgroup.
No real reason for a production machine to have any access to internal
security when you think about it.
classic asp should be pretty easy to move, just set up new webs and
dump the scripts in there. If you have 2 machines its always easier to
look at the one while your building the other. Basically copy the setup
and tada... the only thing you might need to remeber is components (if
your using any) and thats usually not a very big deal either.
Point sort of being at some point your going to have to change that
thing around and while its no fun you have to imagine now is a better
time to bite the bullet and get it set up the right way. Your
alternative is to mess around for hours and hours praying that you
change domain wide security to the point that running NET
apps on that domain controller works. Personally I wouldnt sleep well
knowing I had just messed around so bad with the OS that I had no clue
what bugs and security holes I might have accidently opened in the
process. I wont even get into the possible things that might stop
working on the rest of the domain if you fiddle with accounts like
"Network Service"
Oh and if thats not enough reason to make you think about it, consider
how hard it will be to try and rember what you did at 2AM 6 months from
now if that machine takes a dive or some critical update undoes what
you changed.
I feel for you though, trust me we have all been down that road once or
twice. Get some sleep and in the AM the task at hand wont seem nearly
as bad. You live and you learn, and you will definatly be WAY better
off making things right sooner than later
, Makes sense to me. I used the ASPProtect_access2002.mdb supplied.
(I am using 2003). Only added more names and other personal info
to it for test. Uploaded the amended db with FTP. This did not
restrict someone not listed in db from logging in.
Would each individuals' information need to be added to the code in
order to have it check the database first to find out if the person is
authorized to view?
Part of the problem is I dont know which ASP page or script links the
db to the rest of the web, or how one page relates or links to the
other.
Sometimes I wonder if problems I encounter originate with the server.
Thanks for patience.
, If you have an album with more than 96 pictures, the spacing in the tables can become incorrect, with pictures touching each other. (This program is not designed to handle more than 96 pictures due to server speed, but it can handle more than 96 with minor changes to the code.) Also, after 96 pictures, the pictures will not have 6 on a line, but rather 6 on a line up to 96 pictures and then the rest of the pictures on one line next to each other extending to the right of the screen endlessly. To fix this, I simply edited the ASP code using the following loop. It can be a perminent fix, because I used the maxpicsperalbum variable to define the spacing.
<% Dim SixInterval For SixInterval = 2 to maxpicsperalbum SixInterval = SixInterval + 5 %> <% If PicIndex = SixInterval THEN %> </tr> <tr> <% End If %> <% Next %>
Then, the following code must be commented out:
<% If PicIndex = 6 or PicIndex = 12 or PicIndex = 18 or PicIndex = 24 or PicIndex = 30 or PicIndex = 36 or PicIndex = 42 or PicIndex = 48 or PicIndex = 54 or PicIndex = 60 or PicIndex = 66 or PicIndex = 72 or PicIndex = 78 or PicIndex = 84 or PicIndex = 90 or PicIndex = 96 Then %> </tr> <tr> <% End If %>
This code can be found in scripts/view_album_style*STYLE NUMBER*_inc.asp . (STYLE NUMBER depending on which style you are using (found in config file))
This change in code will enter a new table row after each 6th picture. You can have more or less than 6 pictures per line depending on the width of your files and preference by changing changing the number 5 in this line of code: SixInterval = SixInterval + 5

jamapor38210.5987384259, pretty clever...
If anyone is interested in what the Mod function actually does this article explains it nicely. They even use it for the same purpose in the examples.
http://www.asp101.com/articles/steven/mod/default.asp cwilliams38210.6791898148, Actually it is my own server (retired email server from my employer). I will check out the documentation again. I DID read that part, but didn't understand it enough. I'll dig deeper. Also my box has 2 CPU's, hence the $125 for ASPImage..., thx for posting this..
Just a few notes... more than 100 pictures specified in the config file is not supported. You are of course on your own if you specify more than 100
Also, technically the post above should say more than 102 pictures... "I think" as you wont need more html cell code until then..
The loop in the code is probably how I should have done it in the 1st place but I was in a hurry to get this finished and I also never expected/wanted anyone to specify more than 100 pics per album.
Lastly.. depending on what style you are using in the config file the code above may not work as some of the styles do not use cells but line breaks instead.. At least from what I remember. cwilliams38306.7506481481, Banners no longer show up on my site ?
If banners were working fine and now they are just not showing up. 1st check to see that you are calling a valid zone with live banners in it. If you are then most likely this it what hapened.
The web server must have crashed or lost power and now the application variables are in limbo/not working.
I have seen this happen a few times.
Basically the application variable system gets messed up because it was not shut down properly.
The way to cure it is as follows.
Edit and save a banner in the system. Hopefully that gets things going again.
If this happens a lot it is a server issue, not ASPBanner's fault. cwilliams38415.0978935185, Oh big deal !!... John mentioned some site and you feel like you proved some sort of point. Aren't you special ?
Look, I am telling for the 3rd time you can't do what you are talking about with ASPProtect.NET. Are you braindead cause I really am beginning to think you are and I for one am done trying to be somewhat nice to you ??????
I am also willing to bet you had no idea what viewstate even was until I mentioned it and then you probably went and read up about it so quit trying to pretend like you know what is going on! If you knew what was going on you would not be asking more questions about ASPProtect.NET than any customer in the history of selling the application.
As a matter of fact you should send me like 400.00 just for all my time you have taken up because you are totally frigin clueless !!!!!
I should have cut you off the instant you offered me illegal software from p2p right in a forum post., YAY! I FOUND A BUG IN MY TESTING!!! Do I get a cool t-shirt or a coupon for Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream?
Hehehe... seriously, thanks for digging deeper and spotting the error.
You got some mad skillz and some excellent service, Mr. Cwilliams!
, no, but in the standard version it probably will not run so great with more than 75 or so.
The unlimited version can handle pretty much whatever., If the physical path isnt right and the permissions are not right it just plain will not work. You will not get an error.
If the filesystem object is disabled on the webserver it will not work either. Something has to be wrong.
Please start a new thread when the topic changes.. thanks
It helps to keep the forums organized for other users in the future. cwilliams38454.6146180556, Not to be pushy, but how's the new version progressing?
I'm hoping these features will be in it:
- possibly add the ability to move pictures around in an album. and maybe between albums, I must also remember to move the ratings and desc as well for that image.
- possibly add a feature to store 3 versions of images uploaded
thumbnail, medium res, and high res/original
-
add option to store the images orginal name in the images description area during upload may be helpful to people that name their images in a somewhat descriptive way
-
add support for the ibulc bulk upload client that I recently discovered
If you could use a beta tester, I'm still just setting up my site and would be willing to run a beta.
Thanks
Al , I do not what see what this has to do with anything I sell ?
Those errors are all related to pages that have nothing to do with my ASP applications and code., Its not a known issue.. I would try the original code before you made any changes and see if it still happens to you.
It seems to be working fine here for me in amy test web.
I am going to look into some more in the meantime.cwilliams38341.7166782407, I assume you mean 500 pixels wide
no.. because you cant reliably tell a pictures image width without an image resizing component to look it up.. asp can not do things like that on its own
serverobjects has a free component called "imagesize" that can do it as well but you need access to the server to install the component http://www.serverobjects.com/products.htm
so if you cant do that with regular asp code you definetly can not stop the upload proces because the picture is too wide..
heck, that would be nearly imposible to do regardless.. even with the best 3rd party components at your disposal
even with an image resizing component you would have to allow the upload.. then check the pixel width.. then delete it.. tell the user what is going on...etc etc .. all a very complicated process
, There are 8 Access Levels by default.. they work like this. http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=166& ; ; ;PN=1
Access Levels exist in ASPProtect Version 7 for backward compatibilty for customers using previous versions.
Truth is Groups are the replacement for Access Levels and they are much more powerful and flexible. You can also make as many of them as you want in the admin area. http://support.cjwsoft.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=167& ; ; ;PN=1
On a side note: We also coded ASPProtect Version 7 so there could technically be as many access levels as you wanted. It's not supported but if you really wanted more Access Levels you would carefully add more Access Levels to the drop down choices when you edit a user. "edit.asp"
I don't know why anyone would want to use Access Levels however when they can use Groups. cwilliams38433.5546875, Christopher
Many Thanks
Seems like its working just got to test it bit to see, though it wasnt going to work as I had one too many End If's after the last part of the code you done for me. But even I eventually sussed it, nothing to do with your bit just another mistake on my part
Great to get support like this especially on a Saturday

John , Our knowledge base which is hosted at a remote location is protected by ASPProtect Full Version 6. I would like to allow our employee to access the knowledge base from within our internal network unchallenged. Is there a way which I can modify the code "check_user_inc.asp" to allow any one coming from say 10.1.X.X to access the site unchallenged?
Thanks,
Mo , Hi,
We use ASP Protect 6.0 and the database is SQL Server. Our hosting company is charging a lot for daily and weekly backups for everything. Which directories/folders do we need to backup daily and weekly incase something happenes to the site and we need to restore and get the password-protected are that works with ASP Protect to get working. , Good Morning - I am receiving an Http 500 internal server error when I go to add a new user via the register.asp page. the url when the error appears is: .../users/add_new_account.asp
I think the error has to do with my email component setting - becuase it works fine otherwise.
I have the email component setting set to CDOSYS (using remote server) with the mail.remote.server set to email.cidra.com - email address set to webmaster@cidra.com
Note: I receive the email notification and the user does get added.
Can you help please? Shirley
UPDATE...I just figured out that it only errors when the email address I use for the user is NOT from cidra.com -- Any idea why?
, A mod like this would improve tracking by leaps and bounds.
Do you think this addon would be availalbe anytime in the near future? If/when this feature or mod becomes availalbe, it certainly would be ideal if some script was made to import all the log file data. , Just to let you know that i figured out my problem. I had to modify the connection in the email code and get the correct path from my provider.
I hope you enjoyed your vacation.
Thank you Adam , Most likely it is no longer supported on the web server. The web host probably moved you site to a windows 2003 server which does not support cdonts or they stopped running the IIS SMTP server.
You usualy wont get an error..
it is also possible that cdonts is boned up as it is pretty flaky and that tends to happen. For example sometimes the emails it is suppost to send get caught up in the smtp pickup directory and never get sent out until the server is rebooted.
You should really ask the hosting company why cdonts has stopped working. It definetly has nothing to do with the code if it has been working all that time. If CDONTS still is supportd tell them you emails are in limbo. Ask them to look and see if a bunch of ".eml" files are stuck in the stmp pickup directly and if so to please reboot the server.
lastly: cdonts has been deprecated and now everyone uses cdosys. see my article http://www.powerasp.com/content/new/sending_email_cdosys.asp
, I already gave execute permissions to the stored procedures and that
cleared up the first error, but the second one I still can't figure out., it probably means the page you are trying to protect is (not in an iis application or not in the same iis application) which it needs to be
for a situation like using ASPProtect you really want your root of your virtual directory set up as one big application in IIS. (after you inquired about it your hosting company probably went and set the ASPProtect folder as an application in IIS which means any pages you protect need to be in there as well. (truth is they should have had your entire web starting from the root set as one in the 1st place..... its standard practice for any experienced hosting company) cwilliams38456.9306828704, On second thought guys, it would must easier to change the code using modulus as follows:
<% If PicIndex mod 6 = 0 THEN %> </tr> <tr> <% End If %>
This will end each row and create a new row after each 6th picture. It'll be must easier code to work with and change. This code must be placed in the PicIndex For Loop.
If you have any questions, JPortnoy@Checkernet.com , What application you talking about ? I'll assume ASPProtect. In the future please specify what application you are talking about.
ASPProtect 7 already has protection that is quite effective. The no concurrent login feature which will not let the same username under a different ip log in at the same time. Meaning if someone gives out their info they will screw themslves over because eventually they won't be able to log in. Only one unique ip at a time can log in so even of 100 people know the info it won't really do anyone much good except the lucky one that logged in 1st and stayed logged in. The username/password will eventually become more and more useless as more and people know it.
In addition to that is is a good idea to monitor the daily logs and single out a user you see logging in a lot. The more ips you see for that user the more chance it is multiple people logging in and you should take action. , I have tried everything to get your CJWSoft code working..I purchased the auto listings software and I am stumped, and actually you stumped my hosting provider, my database is stored in the database directory on the root.
I have even tried your ASPtest and still cannot connect. My have connected other databases without an issue on this same host, I have named a DNS Auto for my database and ponted to that in my code but get the following error you see at http://www.burkesauto.com and even when i try you test script found here at http://www.burkesauto.com/asptest.asp . cwilliams38145.8522800926, You do not run that page by itself. That is not how forms based authentication in .NET works. That is a special page used by the web.config file. It is automatically used when you protect one of your existing .NET pages but is not meant to run on it’s own thus the error.
To answer your other question a user is not sent anywhere. You protect existing ASP.NET pages as shown in the documentation and the examples. If sent to any protected page they are either prompted with a login box or if logged in they see the page as usual. If they log in the form posts to itself and they end up at the same page after supplying proper login credentials. That is how ASP.NET forms based authentication works. I suggest you get a good book on ASP.NET that explains all of that if you are still confused.
Now, if you really want some sort of page to redirect them somewhere after login make a basic asp.net page.. protect it.. and then use a redirect statement. , You can mix and match banner calling methods all you want. Try it and see what happens.
However, the only method that is going to work on non ".asp" pages is the javascript or the new iframe method listed in the support forums.
cwilliams38209.532349537, Triple check the upgrade instructions because I think you missed something important.
line 227 on "/password_admin/save.asp" refers to the "Password" field
the error your getting most likely means it is not there..
Pay close attention to the areas in the upgrade instructions regarding renaming your existing "Password" field to "Old_Password"
Then making a new "Password" field and carefully following the instructions needed to convert your old passwords for use with the new system.
If you don't everything carefully and perfectly this is the sort of error you will get.
cwilliams38451.8787268519, ok thanks, I would like to change this file name to the typical Login.aspx, how to do this? I have a VS 2003 but need instrutions if that's the route to go.,
