You might want to check out the latest component from Software Artisans. It was designed to export data to Excel, and make it pretty once it gets there (assuming you might want that). Allows for font and colors to be set, charts, graphs, etc. All without having Excel installed on the server (If I recall correctly). Last I checked, they were BETA testing it, but that was a little while ago. It might be in full release now.
