When the South by Southwest Music Conference & Festival set up
for business two decades ago, it hosted 700 registrants. In the
early days, the event was so small that virtually all of the
registrants could stay in a single Austin hotel, where acts
played all day in the lobby atrium; at the closing softball
tournament, kegs of beer were set up at the backstops.

playing cello. That was the scene Tuesday night at the
Troubadour as Isobel Campbell and her backup band played
"Willow's Song," a Velvet Underground-like tune from the
