Clinton Portis has more reason to hate the preseason. The Washington Redskins lost their top running back indefinitely to a shoulder injury Sunday night during a 19-3 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals -- one that Portis thinks he should have sat out. "For whoever's watching: Let's get rid of some of these games," Portis said, his left arm in a sling.

Roethlisberger ahead of last year's pace (AP)
Ben Roethlisberger needed only one series of a supposedly meaningless game to play better than he did at any time during last year's preseason. Those nine snaps that Roethlisberger took Saturday in Arizona likely will be long forgotten by the time the Steelers' regular season is winding down in December.

Seau to announce retirement Monday (AP)
Junior Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker who played with the San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins during a 16-year NFL career, will announce his retirement Monday. Seau will make the announcement at a news conference at Chargers Park on Monday afternoon, the team said in a statement Sunday. The 37-year-old Seau spent the past three seasons with Miami after being acquired from San Diego.

Saints RB Bush outshines Titans QB Young (AP)
Of all the problems the New Orleans Saints have faced in the past year, no one could have imagined their woes would be compounded by a reckless driving mascot. "T-Rac," the Tennessee Titans' raccoon-like mascot, hit Saints quarterback Adrian McPherson with a golf cart as he walked onto the field for the second half Saturday night, bruising him and knocking him out of New Orleans' 19-16 victory in...

Culpepper's Dolphins debut brief (AP)
Daunte Culpepper's teammates slapped him on the back as he came out of the game -- the only blows the Dolphins' new quarterback would absorb in his brief Miami debut. Culpepper settled for one 2-yard completion, while the Jacksonville Jaguars completed four touchdown passes of 50 yards or more to beat Miami 31-26 in the exhibition opener for both teams Saturday night.

Mario Williams quiet in first NFL game (AP)
If the Houston Texans hope to justify spending their No. 1 pick on Mario Williams, he'll have to contribute more than he did Saturday night. Williams assisted on one tackle in a quarter of play in Houston's 24-14 preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Shuffled all around the defensive line, Williams looked tentative at times and was stood up on a couple of plays.

Keyshawn makes impact in Panthers debut (AP)
It didn't take Keyshawn Johnson long to show the Carolina Panthers are no longer a one-dimensional passing team centering around Steve Smith. Johnson, in his first game with Carolina, caught an 18-yard pass from Jake Delhomme on the first play from scrimmage, the beginning of a game-opening touchdown drive on the way to a 14-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday night.

Rivers outplays Favre, Chargers win (AP)
Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer has high expectations for new quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers didn't disappoint in his debut, throwing for 169 first-half yards and leading two early scoring drives in a 17-3 victory over Green Bay in Saturday night's preseason opener for both teams. "I thought he played excellent," Schottenheimer said.

Backup QB Romo leads Cowboys by Seahawks (AP)
Dallas coach Bill Parcells wanted to see Tony Romo play, and the quarterback was happy to oblige. Drew Bledsoe's backup played the entire game and completed 19 of 25 passes for 235 yards and one touchdown in the Terrell Owens-less Cowboys' 13-3 win over the sloppy Seattle Seahawks on Saturday night. Owens, who stayed back in training camp with other injured Cowboys, may or may not have watched from...

Anthony back, U.S. tops Lithuania 111-88 (AP)
Good news for the United States as the world championships approach: Carmelo Anthony is at full strength and the team is playing tough defense. Both elements were evident Sunday in a 111-88 victory over Lithuania in a tuneup for the worlds, which begin Saturday in Sapporo, Japan. The Americans are 4-0 in exhibitions leading to the tournament.

Nowitzki leads Germany past Brazil 76-75 (AP)
Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 points to lead Germany to a 76-75 win Saturday over Brazil in a world championships warmup. Cleveland Cavaliers center Anderson Verejao had 25 points for Brazil. Nowitzki, the Dallas Mavericks star, added 16 rebounds. In the earlier game, Tony Parker led France back from a first half deficit to down European champions Greece 72-68.

Report: Isiah denies harassing team exec (AP)
Knicks coach Isiah Thomas has filed court papers denying he sexually harassed a former team executive, the New York Daily News reported Thursday. In the 12-page court document filed Wednesday, Thomas acknowledged he once touched Anucha Browne Sanders' shoulder, and may have even tried to kiss her on the cheek.

Bucks send Smith to Denver for Patterson (AP)
The Milwaukee Bucks acquired guard-forward Ruben Patterson on Thursday from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for veteran forward Joe Smith in a move to bolster the benches for each team. Bucks general manager Larry Harris said his first phone call was to the Nuggets after instructing his staff last week to scour other teams' rosters for a backup small forward.

Anthony practices with U.S. team (AP)
Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony took part in a 2-hour practice Thursday, two days after hyperextending his knee while playing for the U.S. national team in China. Anthony, the leading scorer for the U.S. after three exhibition games, practiced after injuring his knee Tuesday night in the 90-86 win against Brazil.

Nets to re-sign Clifford Robinson (AP)
Clifford Robinson will play again for the New Jersey Nets. The troubled forward, suspended during last season's playoffs for violating the NBA's drug policy, has reached an agreement with the Nets and passed his physical, team president Rod Thorn said Friday. Robinson, a key backup for Richard Jefferson and Jason Collins, turns 40 in December.

'Other' Eddie Johnson speaks out (AP)
Eddie Johnson is still getting over what he calls the worst day of his life. He scratched his way out of the Cabrini-Green housing project in Chicago, fashioned a long and successful NBA career, turned that into an opportunity on TV and built a reputation as an all-around good guy who loves to work with kids.

Oilers sign F Sykora to one-year deal (AP)
The Edmonton Oilers signed forward Petr Sykora to a one-year contract on Friday. Sykora scored 23 goals and had 28 assists last season with Anaheim and the New York Rangers. It was the seventh consecutive NHL season that he scored 20 or more goals, but he was held without a point in four postseason games when the Rangers were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the New Jersey Devils.

Former Flyers captain Desjardins retires (AP)
Eric Desjardins broke down before saying a word. Retirement was more difficult than the former Philadelphia Flyers captain had imagined. Desjardins, the second-highest scoring defenseman in Flyers history, called it quits Thursday, ending a 17-year career that included a Stanley Cup and an Olympic appearance.

Bruins president Sinden resigns (AP)
He was coach when Bobby Orr made his celebratory flop during the Bruins' 1970 championship, the general manager who brought Hall of Famers such as Ray Bourque to Boston and president as the team slipped into mediocrity over the past decade. On Wednesday, Harry Sinden became the latest figure in the team's offseason shake-up.

Hurricanes face Sabres on opening night (AP)
The Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes will play the Buffalo Sabres as part of an Oct. 4 opening night doubleheader on the channel formerly know as OLN. The Dallas Stars face off against the Colorado Avalanche in the second game on Versus, the NHL announced Wednesday. The NHL All-Star festivities on Jan.

C Green returns to Ducks (AP)
The Anaheim Ducks signed center Travis Green to a one-year contract on Thursday. The 14-year NHL veteran, who was with the Ducks in the late 1990s, played in 82 games for Boston last season, one of only two Bruins who did not miss a game. He had 10 goals and 12 assists. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder came to the Ducks in February of 1998 and was with them for the entire 1998-99 season.

Sharks re-sign Rissmiller, add D Biron (AP)
The San Jose Sharks re-signed left wing Patrick Rissmiller and added free-agent defenseman Mathieu Biron on Wednesday. Rissmiller, a restricted free agent who got a two-year contract, will make $520,000 next year. He was a solid late-season addition to San Jose's lineup last spring, getting three goals and three assists in 18 regular-season games before appearing in all 11 playoff games.

A sprint car driver died after crashing into a turn on the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway, race organizers said.
