Jets acquire RB Barlow from 49ers (AP)
The New York Jets acquired running back Kevan Barlow from the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for an undisclosed draft pick in 2007, their second attempt in a week to shore up the position in Curtis Martin's absence. Barlow's departure officially handed the 49ers' starting job to second-year running back Frank Gore, who already was well on his way to winning it outright.

Bengals' Palmer plans to play next game (AP)
Carson Palmer said Sunday he expects to play in the Cincinnati Bengals' preseason game next Monday against Green Bay, provided he doesn't have any swelling this week in his surgically rebuilt knee. Seahawks backups overwhelm Colts in win (AP)
All Matt Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander had to do was keep pace with Indianapolis' starters Sunday night. Done. Leonard Weaver and the Seattle backups overwhelmed the rest of the Colts. Weaver rushed for one touchdown, Mike Green returned an interception for another and Josh Brown kicked three field goals to give the defending NFC champions a 30-17 victory at Indianapolis.

Saints to debut 1-2 punch of Deuce, Bush (AP)
The New Orleans Saints have their first chance to see what type of problems Deuce McAllister and versatile rookie running back Reggie Bush can cause an opposing defense. And football fans across the country will get to see it on national TV as the Saints host the Dallas Cowboys at what is essentially a neutral stadium in Shreveport, La., on Monday night.

Terrell Owens is going to have to practice more before he plays for Bill Parcells. Quarterback Drew Bledsoe said Owens' hamstring tightened up on him.

Roethlisberger starts, throws TD pass (AP)
So far this preseason, it's been one and done for Ben Roethlisberger. One series and he's done and, for the most part, so is the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense. Brad Johnson and rookie Tarvaris Jackson each threw for a touchdown and the Minnesota Vikings got production from starters and backups alike in beating the Steelers 17-10 Saturday night.

Favre, Packers find offensive punch (AP)
A couple of their touchdowns might have come on fluke plays, but the Green Bay Packers offense suddenly looked legitimate on Saturday night. One week after being held to a single field goal in San Diego, the Packers put together several sustained scoring drives in a 38-10 preseason victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Team USA has the right mix, but here's what it needs to do to win the world championships.

Wade scores 26, U.S. beats China 121-90 (AP)
One day Carmelo Anthony leads the U.S. in scoring. The next game, it's Dwyane Wade's turn. Wade scored 26 points Sunday night to lead the U.S. to a 121-90 rout of Yao Ming and China, the Americans' second victory in as many games at the FIBA world championships. Someone else may lead the way against Slovenia on Tuesday.

Diaw scores 20, helps France beat Serbia (AP)
Boris Diaw of the Phoenix Suns made four free throws in the final six seconds to send France past Serbia and Montenegro 65-61 Sunday night, the second loss for the defending champions at the world championships. Diaw sealed the outcome with four seconds left after Igor Rakocevic missed a free throw that would have pulled the 2002 champions within a point.

Gasol has 26, Spain routs Panama 101-57 (AP)
Pau Gasol had 26 points and 10 rebounds and was a key part of each of Spain's big scoring runs in a 101-57 victory over Panama on Sunday night in the opening round of the FIBA world championships. The 7-foot Gasol, who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, combined with Jorge Garbajosa to score Spain's first nine points as it opened the game with a 12-2 run.

Mourning re-signs with Heat (AP)
Alonzo Mourning re-signed with the Miami Heat on Friday, a formality after the veteran center announced last month that he would return for the coming season and help the team defend its NBA championship. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Mourning played last season for the veterans' minimum salary of about $1.1 million; the new deal was not expected to be significantly different.

Germany showed there is a lot more to its team than Dirk Nowitzki. Germany used the 3-pointer and some staunch defense to overcome a poor shooting game from its NBA star and beat New Zealand 80-56 on Sunday in the opening round of the FIBA world championships. Walter Herrmann scored 25 points to help Argentina secure a place in the second round of the basketball world championships with a 96-54 victory over Venezuela on Monday. Herrmann, who plays in Spain, shot 70 percent from the field and also led Argentina (3-0) with nine rebounds. For the second straight game, Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs saw little playing time, finishing with five points...

Isaiah Rider wanted, misses sentencing (AP)
Two arrest warrants were issued for former NBA star Isaiah "J.R." Rider after he failed to show up at his sentencing for convictions that include false imprisonment and driving offenses. Cory Stillman had surgery on his right shoulder Friday and could miss the start of the regular season with the Carolina Hurricanes. Stillman, one of the Hurricanes' top scorers in their run to their first Stanley Cup, is expected to take up to four months to recover, team president and general manager Jim Rutherford said.

Evgeni Malkin, the hockey player at the center of a trans-Atlantic dispute, says he was "very offended" by the pressure put on him by his Russian team. The Pittsburgh Penguins' 2004 draft pick slipped away from his club, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, during training camp in Finland and vanished last week. Defenseman Jamie Rivers, who played for St. Louis from 1995-99, signed a free-agent deal with the Blues on Friday. The 31-year-old Rivers played for the Red Wings and Coyotes last season, appearing in 33 games with six assists and 38 penalty minutes. He can also play forward, providing depth for the rebuilding Blues.

Phil Kessel, the fifth choice in this year's NHL draft, signed a multiyear contract with the Boston Bruins. The Atlanta Thrashers traded prospect Karl Stewart and draft options to the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday for veteran defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski. In addition to Stewart, who had 22 goals and 18 assists in 71 games with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL last season, the Ducks get a second-round selection in the 2007 NHL entry draft and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2008.

Coyotes sign Nolan to one-year contract (AP)
Owen Nolan, who sat out last season while recovering from right knee surgery, signed a one-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday. Coach Wayne Gretzky considers the 34-year-old Nolan one of the league's premier power forwards. "His size, strength, goal-scoring ability and leadership will be a big asset to our team," Gretzky said.

Add Sean Hill to the ever-changing New York Islanders' defense corps. Hill, who spent last season with the Florida Panthers after a three-year stint with Carolina, received a one-year deal worth $600,000 from the Islanders on Tuesday.
