Steelers finish winless preseason (AP)
The Carolina Panthers proved something during a long night that featured almost no starters and plenty of not-so-good football: Their junior varsity is better than that of the Pittsburgh Steelers. John Kasay kicked his fifth field goal on the final play of the game, a 29-yarder that finished an unbeaten Carolina preseason and a winless one for Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh as the Panthers won...
Giants cap perfect preseason, top Pats (AP)
Beating the New England Patriots to cap an unblemished preseason was the perfect present for New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin on his 60th birthday. Now if omens only come true: The last time New York didn't lose in the preseason was 1990, the last time it won the Super Bowl. "It's a great way to teach, when it's positive," said Coughlin, who was a Giants assistant under Bill Parcells in 1990.

Marcus Vick caught punts, grabbed a touchdown pass and even played a little quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in their preseason finale. Soon, he'll find out if he showed enough versatility to merit a roster spot. Warriors welcome back Nelson as coach (AP)
During Don Nelson's first tenure with the Golden State Warriors, his team wore plain blue uniforms while playing a style of basketball that was far from boring. Although Nelson can't promise a return to that classic look, he definitely knows the Warriors will be interesting again when he gets back on their sideline this fall.
Greece between U.S. and gold medal game (AP)
Now that Dirk Nowitzki is gone, the United States is headed for a gold medal game showdown with Spain or Argentina. Not exactly. It only seems that way around here. For days, U.S. players have been asked about a potential matchup with one of those two international powerhouses in the final game of the world championships.
Spain-Argentina semi could be classic (AP)
The similarities between Spain and Argentina have made their semifinal in the world championships as even as a big game can get. Until you check the history. In their run to the world championships' "other semifinal" -- the United States and Greece also play Friday with a berth in Sunday's championship game at stake -- both teams have put up virtually identical numbers.

Sabres re-sign D Kalinin for two years (AP)
The Buffalo Sabres re-signed Dmitri Kalinin on Wednesday, securing the final piece of its defensive corps. A restricted free agent, Kalinin signed a two-year deal expected to provide the six-year NHL veteran a raise over the $1.33 million he made last season.
