Broncos' Peterson suspended for steroids (AP)
Denver Broncos defensive end Kenny Peterson will miss the first four games of the season and be suspended without pay for violating the NFL's steroid policy. The Broncos released an NFL statement Friday saying Peterson will be suspended without pay starting Aug. 31. The statement said Peterson had violated the policy on anabolic steroids and related substances but didn't specify what he had done.

Maas arrested on drug, weapons charges (AP)
Former NFL player and Fox Sports broadcaster Bill Maas was charged with drug possession and weapons charges following a roadside safety check. The 45-year-old Maas and a passenger in his Hummer, Sarah J. Murphy, 27, were arrested late Friday by Illinois State Police. During the stop, police indicated Maas seemed nervous, and he agreed to a search of his vehicle.

Tank Johnson won't face DUI charges (AP)

Former Chicago Bears tackle Tank Johnson will not face charges connected to his arrest in this Phoenix suburb on suspicion of drunken driving. Police said Thursday the case would be closed with no request for prosecution. Gilbert police spokesman Sgt. Andrew Duncan declined to elaborate. "I am not surprised by this decision, but I am relieved," Johnson said in a statement released by his lawyer.

Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam

Adam "Pacman" Jones must wait to see how felony charges filed against him in Las Vegas are handled before a Tennessee court rules on whether the suspended NFL player's plea bargain should be revoked. A new hearing was set for Jan. 3 to revisit the case. "I think we'll have to wait to see what happens in Las Vegas courts," Rutherford County General Sessions Court Judge David Loughry said Thursday.

Dolphins release WR Campbell before camp (AP)
The Miami Dolphins released wide receiver Kelly Campbell on Friday, three weeks before the start of training camp. Campbell hasn't played a regular-season game since 2004 because of leg problems, yet he said earlier this offseason that the quadricep injury sustained during Miami's training camp a year ago that kept him out for all of 2006 was no longer bothersome.

Kevin Durant took his Seattle SuperSonics debut in stride on the first day of the NBA Summer League on Friday. He was scoreless in the first quarter before tallying 13 points in the second quarter, including 11 straight.

Bulls keeping Nocioni for reported $38M (AP)
Andres Nocioni agreed to a five-year deal to return to the Chicago Bulls, and there is a team option for a sixth year. "He's glad to be back," George Bass, Nocioni's agent, said Friday. "We've been very aggressively working on it." The deal officially cannot be signed before July 11. Financial terms were not available, but the Chicago Tribune reported it was for approximately $38 million.

Bucks meet Yi for 1st time in Las Vegas (AP)
The Milwaukee Bucks met with draft pick Yi Jianlian for the first time in Las Vegas at the NBA's Summer League starting there this week. Yi, Bucks general manager Larry Harris and Bucks coach Larry Krystkowiak met for about an hour at a hotel Thursday to get to know the 6-foot-11 power forward and begin lobbying him to sign with the team.

The Sacramento Kings hired Kenny Natt on Saturday to be an assistant coach, reuniting him with former teammate Reggie Theus. Natt and Theus were teammates on the Kings in 1984-85, when the club played in Kansas City. Theus was hired last month to be Sacramento's head coach. Natt was an assistant coach with the Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers this past season and had been with...

Stackhouse agrees to stay with Mavericks (AP)
Jerry Stackhouse is sticking with Dallas, agreeing to a three-year deal to remain the Mavericks' sixth man. Stackhouse agreed Thursday night to a deal that will pay him more than the midlevel exception, which is expected to be set at roughly $6 million. While details were still being finalized Friday, the contract can't become official until the NBA's signing period begins Wednesday.

Coyotes' Turris impresses at rookie camp (AP)
Unlike many of the players invited to the Phoenix Coyotes' rookie camp, Kyle Turris isn't trying to earn a contract. He still wants the Coyotes to know they made the right move when they picked him third overall in last month's NHL draft. "I want to put in a good first impression," Turris said after the 90-minute skate Saturday at the team's practice facility.

John Paddock won't have to move far when he takes over as coach of the Ottawa Senators. Paddock was promoted to the job of head coach Friday after two seasons as the Senators' assistant coach, taking over a team that made it to the Stanley Cup finals this spring. The 53-year-old Paddock will be the sixth coach in franchise history.

Jocelyn Thibault signed a one-year contract with the Sabres on Thursday, as Buffalo bolstered its backup goaltending depth through free agency. Thibault is a 13-year NHL veteran who spent the past two seasons as a backup in Pittsburgh. He had a 7-8-2 record and 2.83 goals-against average in 22 games with the Penguins last season.
