Oakland safety Jarrod Cooper was suspended on Friday for the Raiders' first four regular season games for violating the NFL's policy on steroids. NFL fines Dolphins' Porter almost $142K (AP)
Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter was fined nearly $150,000 by the NFL for his part in a Las Vegas scuffle with another player. Former New York Islanders captain Alexei Yashin will play next season with Locomotiv Yaroslavl of the Russian Super League after failing to get a NHL contract offer to his liking. The Edmonton Oilers signed defenseman Joni Pitkanen to a one-year, $2.4 million contract on Friday. The 23-year-old was acquired from Philadelphia earlier this summer in a trade that sent Jason Smith and Joffrey Lupul to the Flyers. "We are very pleased to announce this signing, as Joni is a player who will strengthen our hockey club in many different ways," Oilers GM Kevin Lowe said.

The Phoenix Coyotes signed goalie David Aebischer to a one-year contract on Thursday. Aebischer, entering his seventh NHL season, has a 106-73-12 record with a 2.51 goals against average in 213 career games with Colorado and Montreal. In the 2003-04 season with Colorado, he went 32-19-9 with a 2.09 GAA.

Penguins sign G Conklin (AP)
The Pittsburgh Penguins signed veteran goalie Ty Conklin on Thursday. Conklin, 31, split last season between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Buffalo Sabres, finishing with a 3.34 goals against average and a .897 save percentage. The San Jose Sharks signed first-round draft pick Logan Couture on Thursday. Casey Stoner set a new lap record Saturday and will start from the pole for Sunday's Red Bull United States Grand Prix. Dani Pedrosa and Chris Vermeulen joined Stoner on the front row. Defending world champion Nicky Hayden was fourth quickest around the seaside California circuit. The top four riders were all under Hayden's record pole time from 2005, when Hayden won his first grand prix.

Japanese motor sports legend Nobuhiro Tajima set a record in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on Saturday, racing to the top of the 14,110-foot mountain in 10 minutes, 1.408 seconds. Tajima, the overwhelming crowd favorite, was mobbed immediately upon exiting his 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara after completing the 12.42-mile, 156-turn course.
