Marc Bulger's numbers put him in the top tier of NFL quarterbacks, and now he has a contract to match. The St. Louis Rams signed the two-time Pro Bowler to a six-year, $65 million contract extension Friday that makes him the highest-paid player in franchise history. The contract includes $27 million in guaranteed money and puts him in a group of six quarterbacks making $10 million a year.
Strahan doesn't report, mulls retirement (AP)
Seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan failed to report to the New York Giants training camp on Friday, and he is mulling retirement, his agent told the team. "He is not here," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said after Strahan failed to report with veterans and rookies to the University at Albany.
McNabb cleared for Eagles' practice (AP)
Donovan McNabb was cleared to practice when the Philadelphia Eagles take the field for the first time Saturday. The Carolina Panthers suspended offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges for the first two games of the regular season, a day after his arrest on a misdemeanor assault charge. Suns' Bell has arthroscopic knee surgery (AP)
Suns guard Raja Bell had surgery on his right knee and will sidelined four to six weeks. The arthroscopic surgery was performed Thursday. Team physician Dr. Tom Carter said Bell had mild wear and tear of his kneecap. The doctor said Bell's play should not be limited after the four-to-six week period. Bell averaged 14.7 points and 2.5 assists this season.
Heat sign PG 'Smush' Parker (AP)
Free-agent point guard William "Smush" Parker signed Friday with the Miami Heat, his seventh team since turning pro in 2002. The deal came after the Heat failed to land several other point guards they pursued, including Mo Williams, Steve Francis and Steve Blake. "We feel very good about acquiring Smush," coach Pat Riley said in a statement.
Bulls sign draft picks Noah, Gray (AP)
The Chicago Bulls have signed first-round draft choice Joakim Noah, along with second-round selection Aaron Gray. Noah, selected ninth overall, averaged 12.0 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks as a junior last season, when the Florida Gators became the first program to win back-to-back titles in 15 years.
Celtics waive guard Allan Ray (AP)
The Boston Celtics waived guard Allan Ray on Friday after he averaged 6.2 points in his first NBA season. Ray, an undrafted free agent out of Villanova, signed last July and played in 47 games for Boston, including five starts. He averaged 15.1 minutes, getting extra playing time because of injuries to guards Wally Szczerbiak and Tony Allen and swingman Paul Pierce.
Knicks sign 1st-round pick Chandler (AP)
The New York Knicks signed first-round draft pick Wilson Chandler, the No. 23 overall selection, on Friday. The 6-foot-8 Chandler played two seasons at DePaul, averaging 12.9 points and 7.1 rebounds. He started all five games for New York's team in the Las Vegas summer league, scoring 13.4 points per game and shooting 51 percent from the field.
Sabres C Roy agrees to 6 years, $24M (AP)
Sabres forward Derek Roy avoided NHL arbitration on Friday by agreeing to a six-year, $24 million contract with Buffalo. It's a hefty deal for a third-line center coming off a career season in which he finished fifth on the Sabres with 63 points (21 goals, 42 assists) in 75 games. The deal represents a significant raise for Roy, who made $627,000 last year.
