Browns linebacker Willie McGinest was scheduled to have back surgery Thursday and will miss at least six weeks, another blow to a Cleveland team decimated by major injuries the past few seasons. Los Angeles Clippers forward Elton Brand underwent successful surgery on Tuesday to repair his ruptured left Achilles tendon. The operation was performed by orthopedic surgeon Craig Morgan in Wilmington, Del. Brand, 28, injured the tendon during his daily workout last Friday. He averaged 20.5 points and 9.3 rebounds last season.

Jannero Pargo, who agreed to terms with the New Orleans Hornets last week on a two-year contract, signed the deal Wednesday. Pargo's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said the backup guard will earn $4 million. He has an option for the second year. Pargo played for the Hornets last season after spending the first four years of his NBA career with the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors.

Samuel Dalembert was sworn in as a Canadian citizen on Tuesday, clearing the way for the Philadelphia 76ers center to join the Canadian national team. Luke Richardson signed a one-year contract with his hometown Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.
